Taylor saw a substantial increase in playing time as a junior. Taylor spent last season growing into a solid leader and a fiery competitor on the court in 24 matches while recording a team-leading 273 digs, including the top three most digs in a match. The 3.64 digs per set Taylor averaged was good enough for ninth in the conference. Taylor had a season-high 26 digs on Oct. 14 at Albion.

Last season’s principal setter, Katie MacFarlan (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) returns with a chance to start in a 6-2 offense for

coach Joris. MacFarlan led the team in assists (439) and service aces (23) while ranking second among returners in digs (189). MacFarlan joined Tincknell as the only players to participate in all 27 matches while

adding 10 kills. MacFarlan had a season-high six aces on Sep. 5 against Oberlin, which

was good enough to be tied for second in the conference for a single match.

Contributing to the senior class is Sammi Brubaker (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan). She accumulated 66 kills and nine blocks

last season, third-best among returning players in their respective categories. Brubaker had one start as a junior and will look to contribute as a starter in her final season for the Bulldogs.

The junior class duo of RoxanneDuran (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) and JoannaSlisinger (Sterling Hts., Mich./Cousino) could play vital roles for the Bulldogs this coming season. Duran, the junior team captain, a defensive machine, was second on the team with 2.79 digs per set. Duran had a season high 20 digs on Sep. 30 at Alma and again on Oct. 2 at Oberlin. Slisinger has the opportunity to start at setter if the team runs a modified 5-1 system after playing in only four games last season while racking up 26 assists and 10 digs.

Standout sophomores StephanieHolloman (Southfield, Mich./Roeper) and KristyDeClercq (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) will look to become consistent role players for the black and gold. If Holloman can build on her freshman campaign where she was fifth on the team in kills with 104 and third in blocks with 64, she could earn a starting spot alongside Tincknell. Holloman can also step up to the line and serve. Boasting a second-best 13 aces among all returning players, Holloman managed a four-ace game against Olivet on Oct. 8. DeClercq proved she belonged as a freshman by playing into 26 games, including four starts. With 273 assists, DeClercq was second on the team including a season-high 28 against Olivet on Oct. 9.

Kelly MacDonald (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) was vying for a starting spot a season ago as a freshman, but an injury early in the season limited her to only two games. MacDonald will look to again compete for a starting position this year at outside hitter.

The young freshman core of right-side hitter DanielleBogedin (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) and middle blocker Ashley VanHouten(Cadillac, Mich./McBain) have a chance to contend for a starting spot. At 6-0 ft, Bogedin could provide the offense with much needed height that was missing from last season. VanHouten offers the blocking ability to lift a defense that was ranked ninth in the MIAA in blocks.

After graduating five seniors in 2009, including three starters, second-year head coach Elisa Joris is counting on seven upperclassmen to lead the team back to the top of the MIAA in 2010. Adrian will bring back a core of players that averaged a combined 6.41 kills per set, 2.78 blocks per set and 17.49 digs per set. With the graduation of setter Natalie Niblock, the Bulldogs will be looking for a new starting setter for the first time in three years. In addition to eight returning players, Joris has brought in seven freshmen to add depth to an already underclassmen-heavy roster. Even with a roster stacked with underclassmen, Joris admits there is an excitement about the possibilities of the team with those returning players and several freshmen that could make an impact.

“I’m really excited for this year,” Joris said. “We have some really good players coming back and with some of the freshmen I’ve recruited this year, I think we have filled the holes of the seniors that graduated.”

Joris has brought on first-year assistant coach Jordan Timmerman to help improve a defense that averaged 14.38 digs per set and to help develop an attacking offense that lost three of its top four weapons. After finishing 6-21 and missing the MIAA tournament for the first time in 10 years, the Bulldogs return half their starters including kills leader senior Rebecca Tincknell (Troy, Mich./Troy) and senior libero Jamie Taylor (Au Gres, Mich./Au Gres-Sims). The team will rely heavily on their co-captains Ticknell and Taylor, the two most outspoken members for the team on the court.

Getting the team on track from the start and staying healthy will be the key to an improved 2010 season. After starting last season with several key players out with injuries including starting setter Natalie Niblock, the team started off slower than expected. Due to injuries, in all 21 different players played at least one set in the 2009 season. Joris hopes to provide a stabilized lineup to create better team unity. “It took us a while to develop after Natalie had surgery,” Joris said. “If we can stay healthy this season, I think we can have a very successful year.” The Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them this season as their schedule features opponents that posted a combined .540 winning percentage and face eight teams that are coming off winning seasons. On top of that, the Bulldogs will face three teams that made the DIII tournament in 2009 (Bluffton, Calvin and Hope).

will rely on Tincknell to lead the team on the court while providing an offensive spark. Tincknell was one of only two players to play in every match last season. In addition, Tincknell led the team in kills (261) and was second in blocks (74) while adding 54 digs, 22 assists and six service aces. Tincknell finished tied for fourth in the conference after having 25 kills in a single match on Oct. 18 versus Monmouth College. The team had 62 total kills that game, good enough to finish 12th in the conference for individual match kills.

Elisa Joris enters her second year as the head coach of the women’s volleyball program at Adrian College. During the 2009 season, Joris led the Bulldogs to a 6-21 record, including back-

back wins at the Rhodes Fall Break Classic. Joris didn’t have to wait long for her first career win as she led her team to victory in her first game as head coach over Denison (3-1). Prior to accepting the head coaching position, Joris served as assistant coach during the 2008 season.

Joris concluded her collegiate career in 2005 at Wayne State University in Detroit. She totaled 393 kills during her senior campaign and became just the second All-American in school history as she was selected to the Daktronics All-America Second Team. She also was named to the Daktronics and AVCA All-Region First Team and earned First Team All-GLIAC plaudits. Joris led the nation (Division II) in blocks per game as a senior and was fourth in the conference in kills per game.

For her career, Joris played in 110 matches with 1,003 kills, 108 service aces, 105 solo blocks, 374 assisted blocks and 424 digs. She played her first two years at Grand Valley State University in Allendale before transferring to Wayne State for her final two campaigns. In her final two years as a Warrior, she had over 300 kills in both seasons and also recorded over 100 blocks.

Joris is a 2008 graduate of Wayne State University with a bachelor of arts degree in public relations. She was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.5 GPA or higher) for Fall 2003 and Winter 2006 Semesters.

Jordan Timmerman begins his first year as the assistant volleyball coach at Adrian College.

Timmerman is a graduate of Grand Valley State University with a major in physical education and a minor in health education. While at GVSU, Timmerman was a member of the men’s club team for four years.

He previously served as assistant coach of the men’s volleyball club team at GVSU and was also head junior

varsity coach at North Muskegon High School since 2008. In addition, Timmerman has coached the Inside Out Volleyball Club of Muskegon since 2006 working with 15, 16 and 17-year olds.

Timmerman has spent most of his life around the game of volleyball while growing up on the beach in Muskegon, Mich. Since his time at GVSU, Timmerman has become one of the top 20 ranked players by the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association. Timmerman still competes in indoor and beach tournaments throughout the year.

ADRIANCOLLEGEAdrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

Dr. Jeffrey R. Docking, 17th president of Adrian College, earned a doctorate in social ethics from Boston University, a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. He became president July 2005.

Before coming to Adrian, he held positions at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Penn., most recently as vice president and special assistant to the president, and as vice president of student affairs and dean of student affairs. He also has experience teaching and working in residence life. He and his wife Elizabeth have four children.
