Welcome... to Guelph and Wellington County. We are really excited to share with you our unique slice of Ontario. Have fun browsing through these pages to find your favourite things to do when on vacation but first, here are three pieces of advice when visiting the area.

Put your feet up as many times as possible while here. When you come to visit, we want you to feel comfortable and relaxed just like at home. Introduce yourself to shop keepers, restaurants and the people you are staying with. Whether you travelled as far as Toronto or Tokyo, we want to hear your story! Learn at least one new thing about the area before you leave (page 10 doesn’t count). Not only will you feel smarter but you will have more to talk about when you get back home. Ok, lets get started!

Things about Guelph you may not have known: Colonel John McCrae, who wrote the poem “In Flanders Fields” was born and raised in Guelph. The number “64” on the cap of Sleeman Cream Ale bottles is the page number of the recipe from the book belonging to the great grandfa-ther who started the company in 1832. The Yukon Gold potato was actually a creation between a local farmer and the University of Guelph. The University of Guelph Library holds Canada’s Largest Cookbook and Theatre Archive collections. 1460 CJOY was the first Canadian radio station to have a call-in talk show Guelph’s covered bridge is one of only 2 of its kind in Ontario. It’s structure doesn’t include any metal parts, including nails. The inventor of Five Pin Bowling, was a Guelph resident. Guelph is the first and only municipality in the British Commonwealth to own its own railway line. The line is a 16 mile link to the Guelph Junction Railroad and the CPR. Guelph still owns it today.

City of Guelph “Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and

enjoy the journey”

- Fitzhugh Mullan

Pronounced “gwelf”.Known as the Royal City, Guelph was named after the British Monarch King George IV, who was from the Guelph lineage (a German Family).

Fergus & Elora

We’ve Got The Recipe For The Good

Life. And we’ve got all the ingredients, tucked away in the quaint towns of Fergus and Elora. Stir in fabulous festivals, fine cuisine, a sprinkle of amazing accommodations set in gorgeous scenery, a dash of romance

along historic streetscapes, a grand museum and art sprinkled everywhere, with the flavour of exciting outdoor adventure and shopping galore. We’re serving it up fresh daily, all year long.

Connected by winding roads and natural trails, the communities of Fergus and Elora are linked by a collective history and the quiet rush of the river that meanders through them both in the midst of the steep cliffs and rocky caverns of the Gorge. Whether you’re a day-tripper, a weekender or a family looking for a holiday adventure we’ve got something on the menu to suit your taste.

There is a proud tradition of good fun to be had in every season. Spring awakens with Farmers’ Markets and the smell of maple syrup. In summer experience the 25th anniversary of the internationally popular Fergus Truck Show or you can enjoy Scotland without the airfare at the renowned Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. If it’s the refreshment of the great outdoors you seek, we’ve got some of the best

fly-fishing in Ontario, camping, trails, rafting the rapids and spending lazy days tubing along the Grand and Irvine rivers. Wander the peaceful tree-lined streets on one of our many walking tours and you will discover old settler homes and historic churches as well as artists and artisans at work. Discover your creative side at the Elora Centre for the Arts, which hosts many summer events such as Art in the Yard, Riverfest and the Elora Fergus Studio Tour. As fall ushers in an explosion of colour, October features Sensational Elora – Festival of the Senses. This award winning festival features the renowned music, art, drama, film, food, scenery and architecture of historic Elora including our Sensational Soup Off – an empty bowls project held annually on Thanksgiving Monday. Spirits and ghosts are welcome during October’s Monster Month. You will find the streets filled with locally crafted spooky monsters, lantern tours and a monster parade. Winter is a magical time when snow and frost paint the trees, and icicles as tall as a house form throughout the gorge. Every season offers something new and beautiful for visitors and locals alike.

Best of all, Fergus and Elora are mere minutes apart, so you’ve got time to do it all and experience the uniqueness that makes up Centre Wellington. Just minutes north of Guelph, within two hours of Toronto, Niagara and a stone’s throw to Stratford, Kitchener and St Jacob’s, this is the place to enjoy the good life. Come see what’s on the menu today.
