who match your project’s needs, you may also want to conduct

some background research by checking with the Better Business

Bureau, talking to their references, and confirming they are

licensed general contractors in NC, as well as active members of

the GBA Remodelers Council.

If you have a house that was built prior to 1978, you will also

want to make sure you contract with a NC Certified Lead

Professional that will have the training requirements and

certifications needed to address EPA guidelines for lead-based

paint hazards within your home.

eager to start remodeling projects to update and refresh

their surroundings. Before getting started, it’s a good idea to hire

a professional remodeler for a workable plan and better results.

homeowner’s dreams and budget into a beautiful reality,” said

local trade associations tend to be more reliable, better

educated, and more likely to stay on top of construction and

Talk over the details of the home remodeling project and begin

reviewing the contract. You’ll want to confirm the remodelers’

insurance coverage, ask about any warranties on their work,

know who is responsible for obtaining any building permits, and

understand the process for making any change orders after the

contract is signed. Make sure that you and your remodeler see

eye to eye before you sign on the dotted line.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: HISTORIC RENOVATION

Southern Evergreen, LLC was called upon by PreservationGreensboro Development Fund to renovate a home, morethan 100 years old, which had been slated for demolition.Moved to a new site, the house was saved from ruin, andtransformed into a wonderful dwell ing for futuregenerations to enjoy. Many of the unique details of the housewere preserved or copied from the original.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: COMPLETE RENOVATION

Our overall objective with this project was providing the clients with a modern inspired home melded with an early 1920’s erafarmhouse. Facing the challenges of age and condition of the existing structure combined with the narrowness of the lot meanthaving to think carefully about the design and construction of this project. No modern HVAC, electrical wiring or plumbingmeant putting all those systems into place in this slab-on-grade home. The original home dates back to the original estate fromwhich the Lake Daniel area was carved and the house stands at the highest point within what was then Greensboro’s city limits.Newly added features in the additions to the home include polished concrete flooring with hydronic heating elementsthroughout as well as an exposed framing loft constructed from hickory timbers felled and sawn on site. During the constructionprocess, reusing available resources and materials helped to minimize our ecological impact

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SECOND STORY ADDITION

Our goal for this project was to add a full second story to this already beautiful one-story home in Old Irving Park. Nestledon a cul-de-sac it provides great views of the Greensboro Country Club Golf Course. This huge second story addition includesa new master suite with a marble bath, a new guest suite, a dramatic stairway, and a spacious library with a walk-out terraceoverlooking the golf course. The clients were able to remain in the home during the entire construction process and great carewas taken to minimize the impact to their lives. Temporary stairs were added in the front and back to allow access into the homeduring the remodel without entering the main level. Originally scheduled for the 2011 Tour of Remodeled Homes, detailedplanning and swift execution allowed this remodel to be completed in only three months – just in time for the 2010 Tour ofRemodeled Homes!

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: FAMILY ROOM AND COVERED PORCH ADDITION

The primary objective for this project was to stay in keeping with the architecture of the original home and the beautifuloutdoor surroundings. The second objective was to give the homeowner a large Family Room, as well as a new Covered Porchand a Patio/Pool renovation. The logistics and staging of the work area were challenging due to the limited access and availablespace. Blending the new updated structure with the stately charm of the existing portion of the house was also a priority.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SIDE ENTRANCE AND NEW BATHROOMS

The goal for this project was to create a new side entry for the family and guests. Having a front entry located some distanceaway from the circle drive was not convenient for every day traffic. The only existing side entrance was through the garagewhich required the overhead door to be open. The task for Acorn Construction and our team of subcontractors was to take anexisting bedroom and bath to create a new entrance, smaller bedroom with adjoining full bath and new powder room. On theexterior, we removed a window and replaced it with a new custom door, added new brick steps with covered porch (featuringa copper roof). The new entrance hall includes beaded wainscot and built in cabinets which were designed for coats, storage andinclude bench seating areas. The new powder room has the look and feel of an old style bath, featuring a pedestal sink, built-inwooden medicine cabinet and beaded wainscot throughout. With the help of our great subcontractors, designers andhomeowners, Acorn Construction finished another beautiful and functional project.

This project became a joint venture between the Homeowners and the Contractor, with the homeownersproviding sweat equity on the built-ins in the game room along with wallpaper removal and painting of the upstairsbathroom. The attic area over the garage was finished and turned into a game room for fun and relaxation. During theproject we updated two baths – an existing upstairs guest bath as well as moving an existing laundry from the kitchen intoa newly renovated hall bath.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: KITCHEN

Our goal was to reduce the unnecessary visual clutter and floor robbing angles in the original space. A simple rearranging ofappliances proved invaluable in creating better traffic flow and much better counter space. This kitchen is centrally locatedin the home and has multiple doorways that create lots of cross traffic. The original kitchen had unnecessary angles addingto the confusion. The old thermofoil cabinets were showing signs of wear and just didn’t relate to the rest of the wellappointed home, so they were replaced with soft, off-white cabinets washed with a subtle brush stroke glaze for a look oftimeless beauty, and topped with a stunning granite counter.
