And I quote Newton‘s Third Law of Motion: “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. Of course, this also means that for every hot, dry summer, there is an equally cold, snowy winter. Let the ski season begin . . . The sign-ups for our trips are off to a great start and trips are filling fast. Space is limited on some trips, so be sure to sign up early. If you have-n‘t decided yet, the September meeting (Wednesday, September 2) will be the first monthly meeting of the 2009-2010 ski season. The trip lead-ers and their assistants will be making presentations for each of their trips. Flyers, brochures and trail maps will be available. Come see what the new ski season has to offer. Oh, and make sure you come hungry, as we will have a street vendor right outside the VFW door selling hot-dogs and barbecue. Beer, wine and sodas will be available inside for purchase from the VFW. I can‘t wait for the winter ski trips to start. I bought a new truck this past month under the ―Cash for Clunker‖ program. Everyone who has seen me arrive at the airport with my twenty (20) year old pick up truck will be shocked to see my brand new truck. I am eager to toss my skis in the back and head for the slopes. Speaking of cars, don‘t forget that our Ski Club has vanity license tags with our logo that are available from your local DMV. Contact Mary Rose (410) 243-8090 if you are interested in having Baltimore Ski Club tags for your car. Show your Club spirit. Kudos and a huge thank you goes out to all the folks who coordinated social activities this summer: Dick Simmons for coordinating weekly vol-leyball at Oregon Ridge; Chris Rose for leading bike rides and the Sep-tember weekend camping trip; Christopher Pukalski for the summer pic-nic at Cox Point Park and pool party [thanks again to Janet Stout for the use of her home and pool]; Sharon Albaugh for the Ironbirds game; and, Art Roerink for the Annapolis Summer Theater. We have some fall events planned as well. LuAnn Snyder will be doing a Halloween event in October, so look for details. I can tell you that it will be something spooky. Plans are in the works for this year‘s BSC Fashion Show scheduled for the November meeting. The event will have a new look this year. This November will also bring our Second Annual Bull Roast. So mark your calendars for November 7, 2009. Make sure you practice your karaoke before then.

And, don‘t forget to signup to have your Schuss emailed to you. Join our campaign to ―Ski White, Live G r e e n ‖ . C o n t a c t R i c k T h o m a s a t [email protected] to let him know that you want to help the BSC save the trees for skiing.

ANNUAL BSC SWIM PARTY The Annual Summer Swim party for the BSC was held at the estate home of one of our members, Janet Stout. Janet once again generously opened her home and pool to the members of the BSC for this big event. This year we had a record turn out of one hundred seventeen people (117) – wow! It was a hot and sunny summer day with no rain. The pool with its waterfall was a welcomed cooling off to the members. The day was packed with eating and drinking and gave members a chance to catch up with one another and talk about ski trip to come. We had some great red and white wine (Louis Bernard); some ice cold Coors and Coors Light, several mixed drinks, as well as a selection of non-alcoholic drinks including Honest Teas and Red Bull to keep everyone hydrated for the event. We also had those favorite summer foods like Chicken, Hot Dogs (Dietz & Watson) and Janet‘s home-made hamburgers as well as lots and lots of sides.

If you missed this annual event, you missed a great one. But just wait it will be here again next year!

Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre Friday, August 14, 2009

―Her name was Lola. She was a showgirl…‖. It was a perfect night to see ―COPACABANA‖, at the outdoor Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre (ASGT). The ASGT is an all-volunteer commu-nity theatre organization that has been presenting theatre under the stars in the heart of downtown Annapolis, Maryland since 1966.

The ASGT property is full of history dating back to 1696 when it was designated as wharfage. The brick side of the current struc-ture dates from about 1800 and sits over the ruins of an earlier warehouse owned by members of the Charles Carroll family. The

historic brick wall on the western edge of the property was built to support what was once a promenade along the waterfront. The site served many functions over time, and was Shaw‘s Blacksmith Shop until the early 1960s. It was owned by the Board of Education from 1962 until 1973, and by Anne Arundel County from 1973 until 1990. The theatre rented the property from 1967 to 1990 and has owned it since 1990.

Art & Joyce Roerink coordinated the evening‘s event so that 12 BSC‘ers and friends could enjoy seeing the show and dining before the show at the Federal House Bar & Grille [formerly Griffins] which was just a short walk to the Theatre. Participants were: Sharon Al-baugh & Mark Jones and Mark‘s sister Darla, LuAnn Snyder & Jeff Elligson, Mary Rose Cook, Rayanne Beers, and Fearless Phil Ansell. There were also two non-members who discovered the event on our website, Joyce and Edie, who were a pleasant addition to our group.

The show opened where we first meet Stephen and his wife, Samantha. Through Stephen‘s vivid imagination, the story is told of Lola, the showgirl and aspiring actress and Tony, the Copacabana bartender and aspiring composer who falls in love with her. Their attraction gets stronger until conspiring Rico enters the picture and smug-gles Lola off to his own club in Havana, Cuba to keep her from Tony, and it‘s up to Tony to rally his forces among the ―Copa‖ folks to get her back. The show had a sur-prise ending which was not what we all expected being familiar with the Barry Manilow song. ―But that was thirty years ago, when there used to be a show……‖

Class — Today’s lesson is on...

… taking a Ski Lesson

The C. Edward Crawford

Lesson Rebate Benefit

Never consider yourself too old, or too good a skier for a lesson. Ski lessons are offered for all ages and abilities - from beginners to advanced skiers. All skiers, beginners thru advanced should learn from a certified instructor. The Baltimore Ski Club offer‘s lesson rebates to all BSC Club members who participate in a BSC spon-sored trip. The $20 per day rebate is for a group or private lesson. The maximum rebate amount on a week-long trip is $80 and a maximum of $40 on a weekend trip. The trip participant must have a receipt from the ski school validating payment for the lesson. Usually, participants on ski trips that offer free les-sons e.g. Jay Peak and Sunday River, are not eligible for the rebate. in addition, the BSC offers a racing refund for members who enter a NASTAR or CITZENS race [$5 per day, 5 day maximum = $25]. The Club encourages our members to take advantage of this great benefit. This program was the brainchild of the late C. Edward Crawford. C. Edward was a passionate skier who pushed the Club to start this program many years ago. It is now appropriately called: ―The C. Edward Crawford Lesson Rebate Program‖ in his memory. What type of ski lesson program should you look for? There was a time in the ski industry when there were rival schools of thought on how to teach the art and skill of skiing. Today, with the introduction of the shaped ski, there is an inherent turning capability engineered into the ski. The biomechanics needed to turn and steer the skis down the mountain are uniformly taught throughout the ski industry. This benefit program applies to both skiers and boarders alike. Fun is important! Enjoy your lessons and work with your instructor who will make learning to ski or board an enjoyable experience. This is especially important for children new to the sport.

I plan to do the following 26 mile ride on Sunday morning, September 27th

at 10 am. Please

OXFORD LOOP BIKE RIDE

This excellent loop between Easton and Oxford is the classic Maryland Eastern Shore ride. Along the way, you visit several quaint little town, ride across a ferry, and perhaps do some shopping in St Michaels. As an added bonus, this ride is located almost exactly halfway be-tween Washington and the beaches. Thus, it's a great way to break up your trip to the

shore . There are a number of good places to start this route. If you are on your way to the beach, you can stop in Easton's Idlewood park, which is an easy ½ mile west of Route 50 along Dutchmans Lane. St Michaels also makes a good start, (especially if you are spending a few days there.) You can adjust the cue sheets to fit your desired starting location. This is basically the same ride as #57 from Chuck and Gail's Favorite Bike Rides, with a few minor improve-ments here and there. The route itself is quite flat. The only "hill" of any substance is at the bridge on Route 33 near Royal Oak. Routes 33 and 333 are fairly busy, however both roads have a nice 8 foot shoulder (signs are posted requiring that bike use the shoulder). The remainder of the route follows sleepy old country roads that typically see very few traffic. One exception (Fall 2005) is that the 1 mile section of Dutchmans Lane just east of Route 50 is a bit harrying now due to new housing developments. Use caution here. The highlight of this route is the visit to Oxford, MD and the ferry crossing over the Tred Avon River. The Ox-ford-Bellevue ferry is billed as the "Nation's Oldest Privately Operated Ferry Service". It began operation in 1683, and has run continuously since 1836. While waiting for the ferry, enjoy a bite to eat from the Oxford Mar-ket & Deli (locate just a few blocks before the ferry). The 10 minute ferry ride will cost you $3.00 per bike ($8.00 for cars plus $1.00 for each additional passenger). The longer ride will take you out to St Michaels, MD. This is a favorite Washington get-away location, with many B&Bs, shops, and restaurants. St Michaels is also home to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The suggested bike route snakes though the back streets of town and past the harbor. There are a bunch of short turns in this section, so you might be better off following the map to the left. From Washington, take Route 50 out past Annapolis and over the Bay Bridge. About 18 miles after the Route 301 split, Route 50 enters Eastern, MD. There are many gas stations, hotels, and restaurant along this built up section. You will be making a right turn onto Dutchman’s Lanes, which is at a traffic light near the south end of the built up section. Travel about ½ mile on Dutchman, and then make a right onto Aurora St. There are many shaded parking spaces along the left side of the street, next to Idlewild Park.

Ballestone-Stansbury House‘s Halloween Event consists of two separate tours; the Historic House and the Haunted Trails. Event is rain or shine.

Historic House When you enter the house, you will be stepping back in time. Will someone come to their untimely demise, and if so, by whose hand? You will be escorted, by a tour guide, from room to room, where you will watch and listen as the plot thickens and the drama unfolds. This is not the same as being in a theatre and watching a play. Some of our visitors have commented that by being in the same room while the actors performed, gave them the feeling that they were actually participants and not spectators. Tours scheduled by time and there is a limit on the size of the group. Get your tickets early because the house usually sells out. Haunted Trails Those of you, who are fans of Michael Myers and Jason, the Haunted Trails is where you‘ll want to be. You will start the trails with a tour guide to guide you through several different rooms and the maze. The ones that are lucky enough to make it past the first part will then continue on to the second part of the tour. It is at this time that the tour guides will leave your group, and your group will enter the woods to complete your tour. As long as the group stays together, you all should make it through safely. The woods is home to some scary and crazy beings looking for their next victim. They are not the only ones that reside in woods. If you are careful and stick with your group, you just might be able to make it through the woods and not fall victim to the Hound of Ballestone. He thinks he owns those woods and does not like anyone trespassing in his territory. CONTACT: Luann Snyder for tickets and info (410-716-7079 Work)

That‘s 5 days of skiing on 3 mountains. We don‘t want you to ski hungry so we‘ve included a daily hot breakfast buffet and 3 dinners. Seven Springs, PA February 7-9, 2010

Sprawling inside and out, Seven Springs has long been a favorite destination for our club. In recent years, all hotel rooms have been remodeled and another high-speed , six-pack lift along with several trails have been

added. With 35 trails (13 beg./ 15 int./ 7 adv.) on 275 acres and 95% snowmaking, skiers and boarders will

find cruisers for all speeds, glades, some bumps, as well as two half-pipes and four terrain parks.

Our trip will include lodging at the Seven Springs Ho-

tel, motor coach transport (to and from), lift tickets, breakfasts, dinners and more. We don’t have pricing

from the resort yet, but expect to keep the cost per per-son under $400.

Do you have old straight, outdated, unusable skis cluttering up the garage, basement, attic or storage unit that you are no longer able to sell at a swap? Put them to good use . . . A number of companies specialize in making custom furniture and accessories out of your outdated skis and snowboards, including Adirondack chairs, benches, tables, coat racks, and birdhouses and are looking for used old skis or boards in any condition or style, and will give them a new life by recycling them into useable furniture art to preserve your ski memories. http://www.recycledskis.com http://www.snowsource.com/generalstore_skifurniture http://www.skifurniture.com/ Also, Ski Industries America (SIA), a trade association of skiing equipment manufacturers, has begun a pilot recycling program [mainly in Colorado] for used skiing and snowboard-ing products. SIA officials are optimistic that recycling will provide a cost-effective way of disposing of rejects and war-ranty returns. To learn more about the environmentally con-scious products, practices, and initiatives of SIA and its mem-bers, contact Mary Cecile Neville, Associate Director of Trade Marketing & Member Services at: [email protected]

NORTHSTAR GETS TWO NEW LIFTS Northstar-at-Tahoe will have two new lifts next season. The 8-passenger Highlands Gondola will connect the Village at Northstar and their new Ritz-Carlton and the Bear Paw double at their beginner area has been replaced with a realigned fixed grip quad. The new quad will provide ski-in, ski-out access to the Ritz-Carlton from mid-mountain and also improve access to the beginner teaching terrain. WINTER PARK TO HOST NEXT SEASON'S NASTAR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Winter Park, Colorado, will be the location for the 2010 NASTAR National Championships from March 25–28, 2010. Over 1,000 racers compete in the multi-day event each year. Racers qualify for the National Championships by earning a top-three ranking in their age division at 120+ ski resorts in North America. NASTAR (NAtional STAndard Race) was developed by SKI Magazine in 1968, is the largest recreational ski and snowboard race program in the world. Last season, more than 220,885 NASTAR racers recorded 553,808 starts. NEW QUAD AT SOLITUDE Solitude Mountain Resort is replacing its Powderhorn double chair with the Powderhorn II high-speed quad chairlift. This makes three new high-speed quads in two years for the Utah resort! ASPEN ZAPS PAPER LIFT TICKETS The Aspen Skiing Company's will do away with paper lift tickets and use new high-tech lift tickets resembling credit cards beginning next season. The cards can be read by radio-frequency scanners at all four Aspen ski areas and will be reusable and reloadable. Since the ticket is read by a scanner, skiers can keep it in a pocket and don‘t have to attach it outside their clothing. MORE FLIGHTS TO NEW MEXICO RESORTS American Eagle is adding a second daily flight between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and New Mexico‘s Santa Fe Municipal Airport, providing easier access to Ski Santa Fe, Taos Ski Valley, Angel Fire, and Red River resorts. COMPAGNIE DES ALPES SELLS VERBIER STAKE The Compagnie Des Alpes, the world‘s largest ski lift operator, which runs more than a dozen French ski areas, has an-nounced that its wholly owned subsidiary, SwissAlp SA, has reached agreement with the municipality of Bagnes to sell its 20.3% stake in Téléverbier SA, owner of Verbier Ski Resort, for approximately 13.8 million Euros. CONDE NAST NAMES BEST SKIING TOUR OPERATOR SPECIALISTS For the 10th year, Wendy Perrin, editor of Conde Nast‘s "The Perrin Report," has named the travel specialists who offer the best expertise, access, and value which are listed by their area of specialty. The best European skiing specialist for the sixth year in a row was Dorothea Rasser of SkiEurope/Alpine Adventures. For North and South America, the skiing specialist was Jana Emery of Ski.com. It's her seventh time to receive the award. Congratulations to both! WORLD'S BEST SKIING AIRPORTS In the annual Skytrax World Airport awards, Zurich, Switzerland, is rated as the best airport in Europe -- and it was number four worldwide -- while Munich is rated the second best European Airport. In North America, Vancouver, B.C., is the third best airport in our part of the world. More than 8.6 million passengers from more than 100 countries evaluated the "typical" airport experience. SKI TEXAS -- AGAIN? Snow/Sport Entertainment, Ltd. has announced a new project called Texas Alps in Grapevine, Texas, almost in the shadow of Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport (DFW). To be called Texas Alps, the $70 million project will have a 590-foot indoor ski slope, an indoor ice climbing wall, and a luge track. Similar facilities near DFW were announced two years ago, when the Bearfire Resort indoor ski facility in Fort Worth said it would open sometime in 2009 -- but the project still hasn't broken ground. WHAT WILL THE AIRLINES THINK OF NEXT??? If you think U.S.-based airlines are cutting costs in some strange ways -- check this out. According to UK news sources, Europe's Ryanair is considering plans for passengers to stand during flights so that more people can be squeezed onboard. Apparently, the airline is in talks with a manufacturer about designing planes with standing room -- where fliers would perch on bar-style stools with seatbelts around their waists. Ryanair estimates it would be able to pack in 50 percent more passen-gers while cutting costs by 20 percent, if they are given the go-ahead by the Irish Aviation Authority. While they appear to be serious about the idea, remember that this is the airline that proposed to charge passengers to use on-board toilets last year, but that idea was cancelled due to a huge public outcry.

New TSA requirements for the ―Secure Flight‖ program

In an effort to improve the accuracy of the ―watch list‖ program, the TSA is requiring airlines to collect more data from each passenger. This general issue is going to be a headache for group leaders. While some details are still incomplete, we will need the following info for each air traveler:

First, Middle and Last Name, Date of Birth (Year, Month, Day format) and Gender We realize that many people will be reluctant to provide the extra data and we regret the request. The date of birth will not appear on the ticket but will be in the record that gets reviewed by TSA. Since we already have people who do not report their name accurately, we will need to ask to see or photocopy the picture ID that you will use in the airport (typically your driver‘s license). The correct information will normally be ex-actly what you see on the ID. Recent newlyweds for example, should use what is on the ID, no matter what the spouse thinks. For trips to Canada or overseas, we would like a photocopy of the first page of your passport or get the passport number at a minimum. (Not for TSA issues but for other practical reasons.) We are asking for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Thanks again to Gene Ossie for Providing this group shot from the BSC Picnic held at Cox‘s Point Park on June 13, 2009. I apologize to everyone who attended the picnic but that do not appear in the picture. Club members were coming and going all day so this snapshot represents only one moment in time. Throughout the day approximately 50+ members attended this year‘s picnic. Thanks again go out to Christopher for organizing and preparing the picnic and to Janet Stout for making the burgers. If you missed it this year I hope you‘ll plan to attend next year. The park site is picturesque and there is usually a breeze even on the hottest days as it is on a point surrounded by water.
