Summer Programs Mission StatementWeaving together accomplished teachers and engagedstudents in fun and supportive learning environmentsthat promote critical thinking, celebrate academicachievement, encourage personal reflection, andfoster social and emotional growth, the FrancisParker School Summer Program seeks to inspire,challenge, empower and enrich young minds—in the classroom, in the arts and in athletics.

Program OverviewThe notion of “inspiring excellence”—a notion thatdefines so much of the fall/winter/spring terms atParker—is integral to Francis Parker School’ssummer classes and related activities. From juniorkindergarten through grade 12, Parker’s SummerProgram offers a wide array of learning opportunitiesin the classroom and beyond. Be it at the LowerSchool, the Middle School or the Upper School, thefocus is on enrichment and advancement with theoverarching mission of keeping students’ “brains inthe fast lane” during the summer months.

While a number of traditional courses remain thebedrock of a broad curriculum, we invite studentsand parents to consider some new and excitingadditions for the coming summer. For example:Destination: Space Camp (with a scheduled trip tothe Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama a part of thecourse) and Spanish Immersion at the Lower School;to a genealogy course entitled Who Do You ThinkYou Are? and Survive: Self Defense Training at theMiddle School; to Dancing Through San Diego: A Choreography Workshop and The Science ofSuperheroes at the Upper School. On theathletics/skills development side, Cheerleading Prep:Acrobatics, Gymnastics and Aerobics and Fencing:Learning Sword Skills have been added to an alreadyextensive list of sports options. In total, 34 additionalcourses have been added to the Summer Program.

This coming summer, the Parker program featuresthree separate sessions:

June 21-June 25: Athletic Academies (with othersports clinics and camps offered at later points in thesummer)

June 28-July 16: Academic Enrichment &Advancement Session I

July 19-August 6: Academic Enrichment &Advancement Session II

Lower School CoursesFor all who have had the opportunity to visitor spend time on the Lower School campuslocated in Mission Hills, it is clear that this isa magical place. For summer 2010, someunique learning programs have beendeveloped by a remarkably innovative faculty.Under the direction of Letty Robinson andDavid Glassey, a child-centered program is presented.

At the junior and senior kindergarten levels,“Little Explorers” is back once again. For 1st-5th grade students, an engaging morningprogram (“Sumer Sizzle”) offers a rotation offive distinct courses Session I (June 28-July16) and again in Session II (July 19-August 6).The Summer Sizzle rotation includes reading,science, computers, Singapore math and artduring Session I, and reading, science,“visual” poetry, woodshop and musicaltheatre during Session II. Students may preferto sign up for “stand alone” courses that runthe length of each morning, including SpaceCamp, Spanish Immersion and a pair ofgrade-specific “JumpStart” courses.

The afternoons at the Lower School(“Summer Fun”) often find the children off-campus, involved in age-appropriate, fun

activities. The younger kids may enjoy a variety of beachand aquatics adventures, games and crafts — all supervisedclosely by a veteran Parker staff. The older students (grades3-5) will also enjoy time at the beach in addition to fieldtrips to local attractions like Soak City, Solid Rock Gym,Boomers and other destination points in and around SanDiego. Regardless of age or grade level, the emphasis ofSummer Fun is to indeed, have fun.

ALL-DAY PROGRAM

Little Explorers Program Instructors: Laurie Stall, Kym Farkas

This activities-based, closely-supervised program isappropriate for incoming junior and senior kindergartenstudents. Each week of the three-week program is theme-based and experiential, with an emphasis on providing thechildren with appropriate socializing skills as they enter thelower grades.

Week #1’s signature activity includes a variety of daily fieldtrips to local fun or cultural destinations, preceded by a“circle time/reading/lesson.”

Weeks #2 and #3 are designated as “swim weeks,” witheach morning offering a theme-based, group craft activity.The swimming lessons that follow are conducted at NoonanPool and run Monday-Thursday.

A school-prepared lunch is included prior to the start of theafternoon session. Afternoon activities may include somephysical education, canyon walks, movies or additionalreading activities. There is also scheduled rest time and anutritious snack provided prior to the end of the session at3:30 pm.

3rd, 4th and 5th Grade “JumpStart:”Reading/Writing and Mathematics NEW! Instructors: Annemarie Behrens, Jennifer Hayman

This grades-specific course is designed to reinforce literacyand math skills over the summer months and is teamtaught. Students emerge from this experiential classroomexperience well-prepared to attack the next grade level. Theliteracy component includes work in reading groups, wordstudy, and advancing writing skills. In addition, substantialtime will be devoted to experiential math instructionalactivities. The course orientation shifts between individualand small-group focus.

Note: This JumpStart course is for rising 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students.

Destination: Space Camp NEW! Instructor: Jennifer Hayman

(For rising 5th and 6th grade Students)Ever wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut?This course provides that exciting opportunity! Here’s howthe course will be laid out:

Week #1: In the classroom, students learn about the historyof space exploration, perform some amazing space-relatedexperiments, and prepare for a student trip to Space Camp.One day will be spent at the Air and Space Museum inBalboa Park.

Week #2: Six days at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama!Students fly to Huntsville for six action-packed days atSpace Camp. Activities include simulated space missions,building robotics and much more. Students experience first-hand what it is like to be an astronaut.

Week #3: Back at the Lower School, students create aniMovie, complete with video and photos of their SpaceCamp experience. The course concludes on Friday with astudent-generated movie premiere for family and friends!

¡Bienvenidos!! Students experience Spanish language andculture through a “total immersion” from the time theyenter the classroom until they depart the Mission Hillscampus! Summer Fun!Director: David Glassey

The Summer Fun! program provides a great range ofactivities tailored to the little ones—both outdoors andindoors, supervised closely by an experienced staff. Thechildren will find themselves involved in a number of groupactivities with the emphasis on fun and socialization.Afternoons of swimming, sailing, exploring and workingwith arts and crafts are certain to keep the children engagedeach and every afternoon.

Middle School CoursesFalling precisely “in the middle,” the Middle SchoolSummer Programs courses and activities serve as animportant bridge for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, artistsand athletes as they move from the lower grades or preparefor their upcoming Upper School years.

The emphasis at the Middle School falls squarely onenrichment. While a slateof traditional courses isoffered, parents andstudents are encouragedto consider any of thefollowing: Adventures inLibrary Research (6thgrade students);SURVIVE: Self-DefenseTraining (6th, 7th and 8thgrade students); CreatingFrench Graphic Novels orExploration in Leadership(7th and 8th gradestudents.) These are but afew of the excitingcourses available thissummer. (The majority ofMiddle School academiccourses are offeredmornings.)

The afternoon session features Lancer Camp and other funactivities. For students who enroll in morning andafternoon activities, lunch is provided by the staff runningthe Parker Café. For students who sign up for only morningor afternoon classes, lunch is available for purchase for only $5.00.

An Extended Day option for students who wish to remainon campus following the afternoon session (beginning at3:30 pm and running until 5:30 pm) is also a special featureof the Middle School program. Supervised by Parker facultyor staff, the charge is $6.00 per hour.

Middle School summer students have all their classes andactivities conducted on the Linda Vista campus, located at6501 Linda Vista Road.

GENERAL/ “JUMPSTART”

6th Grade “JumpStart” Instructor: Heather Heilman

Incoming 6th grade students have the opportunity to get a “jump start”on the upcoming academic year with this skills-based course designed toready them for that first year of Middle School. This three-week courseteaches critical reading and writing skills that will be a large part of sixthgrade History and English (and that continues into the 7th and 8thgrades). Students also learn effective study strategies for tests, tips forstaying organized, and preparation for daily routines crucial to overallacademic success.

Survive! Self-Defense Training NEW! Instructor: Kelly Rudolph

In the first half of SURVIVE! Self-Defense Training, students learn simpleways to avoid verbal, mental, emotional and physical attack through astudy of the subconscious mind, understanding personal boundaryestablishment and enforcement, acknowledging, trusting and followinggut feelings, establishing confident body language and using voice as aweapon. The focus is building confidence and raising self-esteem prior tolearning basic self-defense, which will be practiced and then stored inmuscle memory during the second half of the training. Adventures in Library Research NEW! Instructor: Carol Brown

This course prepares incoming 6th grade students to begin their first yearof Middle School as experienced researchers and effective library users.Through a variety of fun-filled and hands-on activities, students learnhow to locate and make the best use of primary, secondary and tertiarysources, including magazines, newspapers, books, maps and websites. At the conclusion of the three-week session, students will have acquiredan ability to navigate a library successfully and be ready to take onassigned research projects and papers with confidence.

Writing Process Boot Camp: 6th GradeInstructor: Kristy Keith

This course prepares incoming 6th grade students to become confident,proficient writers. Students explore the writing process through variouslearning activities designed to hone their writing skills and enhance theirunderstanding of the recursive quality of composition. Prewriting, logicalorganization, and a commitment to revision will be emphasized in dailyinstruction, as will appropriate writing mechanics and conventions.Through the composition of simple paragraphs and multi-paragraphessays, students will leave this course better prepared to begin the newschool year with confidence.

The Science of Superheroes NEW! Instructor: DJ Walcott

The course takes an in-depth look at the science behind a cast ofSuperheroes as well as the effects these characters continue to have onseveral fields of science and popular culture. Class discussions are shapedby an analysis of Superhero icons historically, as portrayed in comicbooks (early 1900s, 2000s), television programs (1950s, 1960s), andmovies (1970s, 1980s, 1990s). Each student is responsible for creatingand presenting his or her own Superhero with science-based powers.Students gain a better understanding of the distinction between scienceand science fiction and how Superheroes continue to shape and impactmodern culture. (Appropriate for 6th-12th grade students.)

Our Restless Earth NEW! Instructor: Jon Cartmell

This course is for all budding volcanologists, seismologists ormeteorologists. For those who wonder why the earth shakes, what makesmountains erupt, and where hurricanes come from. In short, this courseexplores and explains the Earth’s forces. Students investigate the differenttypes of natural disasters and why they occur. Class members willunderstand that so-called “random” natural disasters are actually not sorandom but rather part of an ongoing chain of events. (Appropriate for6th, 7th and 8th grade students.)

Around the World in 15 Days! NEW! Instructor: Jon Cartmell

Discover a whole new world in a fun-filled class exploring countriesaround the world. Students research both locally and globally, micro tomacro, starting out mapping the School, then the City of San Diego, on toCalifornia, North America, and then all the continents. Students trekacross deserts, climb mountains, and travel across entire continents. The class “visits” the pyramids, “crosses” the Sahara, travels the Amazonand learns about famous landmarks like the Great Wall of China plus amultitude of other important world features. No passport needed!(Appropriate for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.)

W ho Do You Think You Are?—A Study in GenealogyInstructor: Mary Ong-Dean

Sarah Jessica Parker, Lisa Kudrow, Spike Lee and many other celebritiesare traveling the world seeking to discover their family history, and in theprocess, more about themselves. Incoming 8th grade students can do thesame by simply traveling to Parker for three weeks this summer. Asstudents set about uncovering their family pasts, they will developresearch, Internet, writing, and PowerPoint presentation skills. The classwill be punctuated by current events discussions so students come tounderstand how their family fits into the larger world.

Exploration in LeadershipInstructor: Jeremy Howard

Nelson Mandela, Caesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, MohandasGandhi, and Eleanor Roosevelt were proven leaders. Why were theyfollowed? What are the characteristics of a leader and how does onebecome one? What is the difference between an effective and anineffective leader? Students explore these questions along with manyothers that help prepare them to assume leadership roles.

Offered to 7th and 8th grade students, this course is designed to beeducational, skills-based and interactive. Students develop communicationskills through role-playing and public speaking via story telling. Gamesand simulations will be used to build upon critical thinking and problemsolving. Students learn about the importance of developing intrapersonal

skills from the position of authority, as well as how that position isviewed by those who follow. Connections will be made betweenleadership skills learned from the techniques of past influential leaders.

MATH/COMPUTER

6th Grade Math Brush-Up Instructor: Melanie Robak

This course provides a refresher of math skills most critical to success inthe 6th grade and provides students with a sneak peak at some of the keymath concepts that await them the coming school year. In a highlyinteractive classroom environment, students practice and demonstratetheir learning through games, puzzles, computer drills, and writtenexercises. This is the ideal course for students who may be feeling anxiousabout taking those next steps in math. Part of the course is dedicated tobuilding number sense (no more counting on fingers!) and learning basicto intermediate mental math strategies. (This course is not recommendedfor advanced math students.)

7th Grade Math Brush-UpInstructors: Corrine Towers, John Hulsey

In this course, students sharpen and recharge their math skills. In theprocess, they develop confidence in their math abilities by reviewingprevious topics and by getting a sneak preview of topics at the next level.Problem-solving skills, fractions, decimals, ratios, percents, signednumbers, and introduction to algebra are all topics that will be covered.In addition, assistance will be given with the required Summer MathPacket for Parker students.

Another in the series of effective Math Brush-Up courses. Studentsdevelop further confidence in their math abilities by reviewing previoustopics and by getting a sneak preview of topics at the next level. Problem-solving skills, fractions, decimals, ratios, percents, signed numbers, slope,and graphing are all topics that covered with a special emphasis placed onbuilding those skills necessary to succeed in algebra. Students also receiveguidance on how to best work through the required Summer MathPacket, a Parker staple. The individualized pace of the course is itsdefining component.

Beginning KeyboardingInstructor: IT Staff

This self-paced, skills development course familiarizes the student withkeyboard use. An invaluable class for the beginner as well as for thestudent who wishes to heighten his or her keyboarding/typing skills.

Enhancing Your Life with iLife!Instructors: Lesley Underwood, Stephanie Oberle

Students create a website integrating a movie, blog, podcast, and originalmusic using the iLife Suite, a Mac-based program. Each studentresearches a topic using Parker databases and learns how to cite sourcescorrectly. After building a website, the Middle School student is preparedto tackle more complex technology assignments and projects in a varietyof curricular areas. (Open to 6th-8th grade students.)

Programming Workshop in Java (I & II)Instructor: Jim Partridge

This hands-on, project-based course is designed to be a fun way to eitherbegin learning about computer programming or to improve on existingprogramming skills. (The course is offered during the Parker school yearas Programming in Java A, B, C, D, E, F.) The range of a student’sprojects will be determined by that student’s level of experience. Thecourse is taught in Java, the language used in AP Computer Science. Creating French Graphic Novels NEW! Instructors: Frederic Skrzypek (French) & Cynthia Stan Mellow (Art)

Create your own French graphic novel! A picture is worth a thousandFrench words! Learn French and become an artist in the process!

Over the span of this two-week interdisciplinary course (French andDrawing), students write a screenplay in French and then bring their storyto life through their own illustrations. French teacher Frederic Skrzypekguides the students in producing and applying the vocabulary necessarywhile visiting Visual Arts teacher Cynthia Stan Mellow teaches theaccompanying drawing and artistic skills. At the end of the course, eachstudent will have created a French graphic novel. (This course isappropriate for incoming 7th and 8th grade students who have taken atleast one year of French. Guitar: The Beginning Sessions NEW! Instructor: Sam Hunt

This class is for beginning guitar students as well as for those with little orno guitar experience. The course first focuses on the fundamentals ofmusicianship and concludes with an introduction to different styles andapproaches of playing. Students learn the basic skills and techniques ofplaying guitar, in addition to reading music, understanding theory,absorbing guitar history, and examining different styles and techniques of the prominent guitarists. Seeing Digital: Exploring Digital PhotographyInstructor: Andrew Rubin

This is an introductory course to digital photography beginning with thebasic elements of photography and how to capture the best possibleimages on the digital SLR camera. In conjunction with learning how totake professional-grade photographs, students come to understand howto navigate Adobe Photoshop software. Students also develop variousprojects utilizing basic graphic design techniques, including the creationof a comic book, movie poster, and/or album cover from scratch usingdigital photographs and Adobe Photoshop. (Students may make a shortmovie entirely out of still images while learning Final Cut Pro editingsoftware.) Each student must provide his or her own camera. While adigital “point-and-shoot” camera will suffice, digital SLR cameras arepreferred. Cameras must have a minimum 8 mega-pixel quality. (This course is appropriate for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.)

Stone Carving/Steel FabricationInstructor: Tom Crowley

This course emphasizes standard techniques and approaches to workingwith stone and steel as important art mediums. Students work withdiamond saws, pneumatic hammers, chisels, rasps and other power toolsto design and execute three-dimensional sculptures in alabaster and othersoft stone. Skills developed include bending, cutting, and welding of steelforms. Students will be expected to produce one finished work (mounted,on a base) by the end of the three-week class. A field trip to a localsculpture garden may be scheduled. (For 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.)

Find out why woodworking is a satisfying, lifelong pursuit for so many.Students choose from a broad menu of woodworking projects designed toexpose them to the safe use of both hand and power tools, whileexploring traditional joinery techniques. Explore the many urban spaces and coastal places that define San Diego. Experience theocean, museums, harbor, and City on daily field trips to observe art, the environment,and architecture. Then return to the new dance studio on campus with fresh movementideas and create dances inspired by what has been observed. Students also practice avariety of dance styles, and learn about famous choreographers. By course’s end,students celebrate San Diego with a final dance showing. (Open to 9th-12th gradestudents.)

This course presents the fundamentals of geometry in a fun and relaxed learningenvironment. A new Summer Program course that provides cheer training with an emphasis on balance, flexibilityand fun. The younger students will be encouraged to focus on teamwork and safety as well ascreating precision in skills learned, while discovering the basic fundamentals of cheerleading andgymnastics. Acquired techniques are shaped by flexibility, jumps, motions, and beginning tumblingskills that will be displayed in a cumulative routine on the final day of the course. Baseball Skills Level I Director/Coach: Ryan Guidi

Targeted at beginners or children relatively new to the game. Participants are introduced to allbaseball fundamentals, with a special emphasis by the coaching staff placed on communicating theproper techniques and mechanics for fielding, throwing and hitting. The Jim Tomey Advanced Basketball AcademyDirector/Coach: Jim Tomey

This specialized basketball academy is targeted at the player with a higher skills set, or competitive orteam experience. The two-week comprehensive camp emphasizes offensive skills development with aparticular focus on enhancing the player’s shooting abilities.

Tomey is one of only four San Diego boys’ basketball coaches to have captured a state title (1998:University of San Diego High School). His Parker boys’ basketball team won the 2010 CIF SectionChampionship. Tomey was inducted into the San Diego County Hall of Champions in 2001. Girls’ Basketball Skills and Development AcademyDirector/Coach: Dale Parker

This skills-specific academy is designed and structured to teach the basic fundamentals of post play togirls who play or seek to play the position with greater confidence. Playing the low post requires thatgirls establish themselves as a physical force and presence “down low,” coupled with a unique mentaltoughness. This academy covers learning the proper footwork techniques, the basic post moves,effective rebounding, post defense and running the floor as a post player.. The goal of the academy isto help create players who can become a powerful force on both ends of the court.

Young athletes wishing to get a jump on the upcoming football season or beginners keen on simplygetting the best possible feel for the fundamentals of the game are encouraged to sign up for theLancer Technique Football Academy. While the primary focus is on throwing and catching, thisfootball camp incorporates other aspects basic to both flag and tackle football.

In celebration of the 2010 World Cup, this starter soccer camp is open to young players (girls andboys), JK through 5th grade. Daily activities include a skills focus that is taught and then practiced insmall groups named after participating World Cup teams. A special skills competition match will takeplace, applying newly-learned skills as well as concluding each day with a “World Cup” scrimmage.

Parker Soccer AcademyDirector/Coach: Seth Tunick, Parker Staff

This co-educational skills development camp is open to both Middle and Upper School-aged players(6th-12th graders), but geared toward the intermediate/advanced player. The 5-day academy willreview basic skills with an emphasis on how to adapt learned skills to game situations. Key individualteaching components include finishing (shooting), defending/attacking and one-on-one drills. Teamskills focus on attacking the goal in the offensive third of the field/pitch, creating effective midfieldplay and using the defense to build an attack. The academy will also feature extended scrimmagingand a concluding “small-side” tournament and will be conducted at Lauer Field on Francis Parker’sLinda Vista Campus.

Seth Tunick is in his third year as boys’ varsity head coach and enters his 8th year as part of theParker athletic staff. He currently coaches at CSC San Diego where he has been a mainstay for 17years. Tunick has been named “Coach of the Year” three times and spent three years as a member ofthe club’s Board of Directors.

Beginning Volleyball: The Building BlocksThis camp focuses on developing the fundamentals necessary to securing a successful start involleyball. Sharpening individual skills as well as understanding the importance of teamwork are thekey components emphasized in this academy. This is a co-educational activity and open to theyounger Middle School-aged kids.

The camp is directed by Eric Sato, two-time U.S. Olympic medalist (Gold, 1988; Bronze, 1992) andCalifornia Volleyball Coach of the Year (2005). Sato is the current girls’ volleyball head coach atFrancis Parker School. Sato will be assisted by new, incoming Parker girls’ coach, Diane Pascua.Pascua was a collegiate standout at Gonzaga University and has been competing in the United StatesProfessional beach Volleyball Tour since 2003.

Intermediate/Advanced Volleyball: Competitive Skills-BuildingThis intermediate to advanced skills volleyball camp, while continuing to emphasize fundamentals,empowers young players to take their game to the next level. This camp is geared toward players(girls and boys) with some Middle School or club playing experience. Players are introduced and thenhave reinforced advance techniques and a variety of team concepts.

Volleyball ConditioningInstructor: John Landicho

This sport-specific strength and conditioning class is designed to increase a volleyball player’s generalathletic abilities. It is intended for incoming 9th-12th grade boys and girls. Thrice a week weighttraining sessions utilize a combination of weight machine, free weight, and body weight exercises toincrease strength and power, with a special emphasis on core stability. Twice weekly sessions focus onplyometric, speed, and agility exercises to increase quickness. Daily flexibility work will also aid inpreparing the volleyball player for the upcoming season.

Conditioning & Speed DevelopmentInstructor: Jeff Rose

This course is structured to benefit a wide range of the athlete’s needs and is tailored to fit a variety ofsports. Aspects of training include: weighted cardio, improving joint integrity, building first-stepquickness, creating lateral agility, developing motor skills, and enhancing vertical leap/lateralexplosion, change of direction, reaction time and flexibility. Regardless of sport, this intensivesummer training program helps improve power, speed, quickness, agility and balance. The courseworks with young athletes in groups or on an individual basis as appropriate.

Martial Arts: Arnis/Escrima—Filipino Fencing NEW! Instructor: Steve Cook

This is a traditional self-defense, martial arts course that finds its historical roots in the Philippines.The course solidifies basic concepts of attack and defense with fluid, energetic, balanced bodymovements through the practiced use and control of one, or two, rattan batons. (These durable anddense sticks are substitutes for the traditional machetes used in daily life in the Philippines.) A fun,action-packed class that provides hands-on learning applications. Open to both girls and boys,appropriate for beginning and advanced martial arts students. Cook was a student of renownedmartial arts instructor Rodel Dagooc in Manila. (For grades 9-12 only or by permission of instructor.)

REGISTRATION

Registration for all courses and activities beginson Monday, April 12, 2010, at 8:00 am. Allcourses and activities are filled on a first come,first served basis!

Students and families wishing to register for acourse or activity may do so by submitting acompleted registration form by mail or bydropping it off at either the Lower School orUpper School. A printable form is availableonline or one may be requested from theSummer Program office. (Please note: Oneregistration form per student.) If the preference is to deliverthe completed registration form in person, thismay be done at one of two locations, beginningat 8:00am on Monday, April 12:

ATTENDANCE

Due to the abbreviated length of the summer sessions, absences should be avoided, barringextenuating circumstances. For courses receiving credit, two (2) or more absences will prevent astudent from fulfilling the terms of a course and warrant a “no-credit” status.

ATTIRE

Student dress is intended to be in keeping with summer and fun—thus, cool, comfortable andcasual at all times. We do ask that students exercise good judgment, however. Recommendedattire for girls is blouses or polo shirts, slacks, shorts or simple dresses or skirts. For boys, sportor polo shirts, slacks or shorts. Jeans and nice t-shirts for both girls and boys are acceptable, butthey should be neat and free of holes or tears.

BEHAVIOR

The Francis Parker Summer Program reserves the right to dismiss at any time, any student whose deportmentor conduct is deemed to be unsafe, inappropriate and/or counter to the classroom experience or to the goals of the Summer Program. In the instance of a dismissal (or a student withdrawal), no refund of tuition or feeswill be issued.

GRADES

Grades will be communicated at the end of each three-week session for semester and trimester credit courses.Year-long courses will issue a grade report every two (2) weeks.

LUNCH/SNACKS

Lunch is provided from 12:00 pm-12:45 pm for students attending both morning and afternoon sessions at theMiddle and Upper School levels. Others may purchase a lunch for $5.00 on the Linda Vista campus. Thereare vending machines on campus that dispense beverages only. Lunch is included for Lower School studentswho attend classes on the Mission Hills campus, attending morning and afternoon sessions.

Parker offers a shuttle bus that departs the Linda Vista campus at 8:05 am daily for the Mission Hills campus. A return shuttle bus departs the Mission Hills campus for the Linda Vistacampus at 3:30 pm daily.

A: A printable registration form may be downloaded from Parker’s Summer Program link (at

www.francisparker.org/sum), completed and then mailed to the Summer Program office at Francis Parker

School. Registration forms and tuition payment may be dropped off in person with either the Upper School

receptionist or at the Lower School office.

2. Q: For what grade levels are courses and activities offered during the Parker Summer Program?

A: Pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade.

3. Q: Are courses offered that eligible to receive academic credit?

A: Many courses are structured to award academic credit—in most cases, trimester or year-long credit.

4. Q: Will all courses published online and in the catalogue be offered as advertised?

A: Assuming that an appropriate minimum number of students en- roll in a given course (varies by course),

it will be offered.

5. Q: What if that minimum number of students is not reached?

A: The course will be cancelled, with all courses confirmed during the first week of June 2010.

In the event a course is cancelled due to under-enrollment, parents and students will be notified and a full

refund will be granted.

A. Quite possibly. The Summer Program office recommends that students interested in attending Parker this

A: The Summer Program asks that all payments be made in the form of personal or business check,

payable to Francis Parker School, or in cash.

A: In honor of the National Holiday that falls on Sunday, July 4, there will not be classes on Monday, July 5.

A: Yes. Extended Care is offered at the Lower School and Middle School at the rate of $6.00/hour.

At the Lower School, Extended Care is available in the morning from 7:30-8:15 am and in the afternoon from

3:30-5:30 pm. At the Middle School, Extended Care if offered only the afternoon, from 3:30-5:30 pm.

A $50.00 administrative fee, per course, will be charge for withdrawals prior to May 1, 2010. Paul Roudebush has beenassociated with the FrancisParker Summer Program forthe past 14 years, servingas its director. For the 2010Summer Program, heprovides invaluabletechnical support andguidance. Roudebush is theAcademic Dean of Parker’sUpper School during thefall/winter/spring schoolyear, teaches AP CalculusBC, AP Statistics,Multivariate Calculus andLinear Algebra, and is aformer chair of MathematicsDepartment. He has 26years of experienceteaching at both the collegeand secondary schoollevels. Roudebush earnedhis BA and MA inmathematics from theUniversity of California, San Diego.

Dave Glassey returns onceagain as the Director of theSummer Program at theLower School. He has spent34 years at Parker, servingin a variety of capacities:as Head of the LowerSchool for 11 years, as ateacher at the MiddleSchool and as a coach atboth the Middle and UpperSchool levels. He receivedhis BA in Physical Educationfrom Cal State Fullerton andan MA in EducationAdministration from AzusaPacific University.

Letty Robinson is theDirector of the “SummerSizzle” Morning Program atthe Lower School. Inaddition to her summerduties, she teaches dramato grades JK–5 during theregular school year. This isMrs. Robinson’s 26th yearteaching at Francis ParkerSchool and her 10th yearas a Summer Director. Sheis also a Parker parent andalumna. Mrs. Robinsonreceived her BA in Dramaand her teaching credentialfrom San Diego StateUniversity.
