ANNOUNCEMENTS From the Community Council
Hello everyone – happy to see many of the regular residents at our September meeting and also to welcome some new ones as well. The start of the meeting was our AGM which went well. Our monthly meeting followed and here are the topics discussed We have been asking for lights outside Burnside Hall at the pedestrian access and we have submitted an application for funding.
The overgrown hedges round the School have now been cut. There is one at the back of the old school and also one at the telephone exchange. We are speaking to the owners to have them well trimmed. The footpath down through Airdit to the Thai Teak requires attention. We have asked the Paths Group to help there. The portacabin in the park has now had it‟s electricity removed and the cabin
will shortly be removed.. No further update on the cycle path to Leuchars. Dr Salamonski will retire at the end of September. Anyone wishing to donate can do so by handing an envelope with money to any member of the Community Council by the end of September. (Cheques to be made to Balmullo Community Council). All monies collected will then be turned into one cheque and given to the Doctor at an arranged meeting – you will be informed nearer the time.
EDITORIAL Ina Cameron
We are pleased to have the continued support from the village, please feel free to come along to our meetings and have a say in the discussions. We were asked why the tennis net was not installed in the park this year. There was a misunderstanding as to where it should go and who was responsible for it with the result it never got put in place. Next year we will ensure that it goes up immediately after the Gala. There have been many complaints regarding the litter in the park. It seems when
the “footballers” are there they are inclined to leave their plastic water bottles etc (and some glass bottles). Unfortunately when the grass cutter comes along everything just gets churned up in the machinery with the result there is now broken glass and plastic spread around, so please take care if you are walking toddlers and they fall that they do not get cut on any of the debris. Can we remind everyone that there is always a copy of the Council Minutes at the post office which you are welcome to read and take a copy of them to take away.
Our next meeting is 11th October – hope to see you there.

BALMULLO SENIOR CITIZENS Joan Auld We had a lovely day for our trip to Crieff. The bus was full and everyone was in good spirits. Some of us stayed in the town and the rest went to visit the Visitor‟s Centre. We had hoped to visit Dunkeld but when we got near the road was closed. No one had told the driver so we quickly made our way to Coupar Angus for High Tea. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food and we came home happy but
tired.
THE GALA
I would like to thank everyone who helped us on Gala Day, it was wonderful the response we had from our loyal helpers. The teas were busy, as was the Cake and Candy, the Raffle and the Whisky Trail were popular too. Val apologises for twisting visitor‟s arms for the Quiz (she sold a lot)!!!!! We made a great deal of money which will help to pay for the Christmas Party on the 4th December. If you are not contacted please let us know – Joan on 870013 and Margaret on

DOCTOR SALAMONSKI Andrew Falconer
Dr. John Salamonski has decided to retire at the end of September after valued service to the communities of Balmullo and Leuchars and beyond. It is clear from conversations and enquiries that many of you in Balmullo would like to recognise publicly his years of dedication and personal attention. As an-nounced at our meeting on Monday 13 September, we will act as a collection point for donations which anyone wishes to make. Please put cash or a cheque payable to Balmullo Community Council in an enve-lope with your name and address and hand this to any councillor (or post to Treasurer at 7 Inchlaw, Balmullo, KY16 0EA). We will collate all donations and present Dr. Salamonski with a cheque or suita-ble gift, hopefully at our next meeting on 11 October.

ADULT LEARNING CLASSES Fife Council had an advert in the Fife Herald last week regarding Adult
classes in various subjects and venues. There is one at the Madras
College in St Andrews. There is also help towards the payment of the classes if you earn less than £22,000 per year.

President Mrs. Mary Campbell welcomed members to the meeting on Thursday
2nd September.
The meeting was a Members‟ Night with several contributors. Betty Gough ran a lively quiz to get things going. Doreen Hopkins showed us several beautiful watercolours and paintings on pottery. Margaret Auchterlonie demonstrated heat-shrinking of plastic, which was most unusual. Penny Wiles brought along a variety of lovely patchwork quilts and Grace Steven gave us a talk on Scots
Language, highlighted by some poetry.

BALMULLO FOOD CLUB Mike Withers
With ever soring food prices, I stopped to think about how can we lower our weekly food bills. The answer was obvious. What is needed is like-minded people to club together and buy direct from the wholesaler. Last summer we were lucky enough to have a fruit press come to Burnside Hall. So I took the opportunity to order some boxes of apples direct from the wholesaler. There were 84 beautiful Jonagold apples per box and they cost £7. At the moment Tesco have 6 “Market
Value” (Tesco‟s cheapest brand) apples for £1. So there is an immediate saving of 50% with the wholesaler. If we buy a net (10 to 12 in a net) of „neeps then it is
£5. So that is 40 pence. So you can see that there are lots of savings to be had.
Also another benefit of shopping direct is freshness. Because the fruit and veg comes direct from the Glasgow Market at Blocairn it will last longer on average than Supermarket purchases because it hasn't had to hang around warehouses,
distribution centres and supermarket shelves before it gets to your home!
Potatoes, Cauliflowers, Turnips, Carrots, Parsnips, Beans, Broccoli, Apples, Pears, Oranges, Grapes, etc. Everything that is available at Glasgow Market will
be available to us.
Basically buy in bulk and then divide it up amongst the members. It will operate
as a little club, without profits. It is just a way to save the pennies.

DOCTOR JOHN SALAMONSKI M.B.Ch.B., B.Sc. (Hons)
It is with a heavy heart that I have to report that
Dr. John Salamonski is set to retire at the end of September 2010. Bringing a premature end to his career at Balmullo & Leuchars surgeries. He reflects "that the staff and patients of Balmullo &
Leuchars Surgeries have been wonderful, making it easier to do his job. I feel that there is a tremendous working atmosphere, and I will miss the people and their everyday interaction. I have
worked all over Tayside & Fife as a Doctor, and I must say that here is the best, because of the people. They are the most friendly and warm of any area. John doesn't want to retire, his mind is fit
and active, but it is his body (Post Polio Syndrome)
that is forcing him to call time.
He arrived at here fourteen years ago as a Locum. Happily for us Dr. Johnston, soon offered him a position and he readily accepted. He has proven to
be an excellent “Listening Doctor” and I for one feel
that he will be greatly missed.
John was just seven years old when he contracted Polio. As a consequence he had to endure many
operations to try to correct the damage. This was followed by very long periods of recovery in
hospital. As a knock-on effect, his schooling was severely disrupted too, but he still managed to pass all his O-Levels. This was enough to secure a position as a trainee hospital Radiographer. From here he qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer and then set to pass his A-Levels. After that, he completed his degree in Physiology. Next on the academic tree was a
PhD. Fortunately for John, two years in to his PhD, he got to realise his dream, and was
accepted to study Medicine.
He worked in A&E at Dundee Royal Infirmary and got to see all manners of injuries. One night was so bad that the Senior Consultant remarked to John that he had never seen a night like this in twenty years! With multiple RTAs and stabbings to contend with. Saving
lives became the norm with John getting enormous satisfaction from his job. He was always arrived early for his shift and left late, he just couldn't keep away! His overriding memories are of the fantastic team of people that he worked with. He feels that as a Team, they really
made a difference to peoples lives.
Outside of work John likes to fly. He has been a pilot for the last twenty eight years. He still
regularly flys a Robin Light Aircraft, with the Leuchars Flying Club. He used to Scuba dive too. John loves the “sense of freedom” that both sports give. These days he can be spotted “helping” around the garden by pulling up his wife's Japanese Anemones thinking that they
are weeds!
John doesn't have any major plans for his retirement, but is considering lecturing in General
Practice Medicine at St. Andrews University. Watch this space.
Dr. Johnston wanted to take this opportunity, “on behalf of everyone at our practice, to wish
John well in retirement and in any new adventures that he undertakes”.
I am sure that patients of both Balmullo & Leuchars will want to wish John “all the best” in
whatever he chooses to do with his spare time, and to say thanks for being “Our Doc”.

LEUCHARS AND DISTRICT GARDENING & CRAFTS CLUB ANNUAL FLOWER SHOWS & WINTER TALKS
This year's Summer Flower Show was again very successful, with an increase in both exhibitors and exhibits. This was in my view due to a respectable growing season,
certainly the sweet peas were better this year as the trophies in the attic will testify. The show was opened by one of our vice presidents Mr. David Wilson and the trophies were presented by Dr. John Salamonski who was pleasantly surprised at both the quantity and quality of the exhibits, perhaps he may consider a gardening hobby in his retirement, but whatever he decides to do we wish him well. This year we decided to expand the Novice section to reflect the main classes to give beginners greater scope to try out exhibiting without having to compete with the "big
boys" so to speak and it appears to have been successful. Local novice trophy winners being : Balmullo P. S. - Vegetables. Dr. Jenny Lowes - Cut Flowers. Mrs. Jane McKie - Floral Art. Mrs. Jan Redpath - Preserves. Local trophy winners in the Open classes were : Miss. L. Reid - Gardens. Mr. G. Reid - Cut Flowers and Pot Plants. Miss. K. Redpath – Roses. Mr. G. Redpath – Vegetables. Mr. A. Smith – Floral Art. Mrs. D. Hopkins – Handicrafts. Sophie Land and Georgina Rolfe – Childrens. and myself with Sweetpeas.
So, thanks to all who helped make it a wonderful show :The Exhibitors, The Committee and Helpers on the day, and of course Lynn and Joe for looking after us in the hall. LOOKING FORWARD THE AUTUMN SHOW will be held in the BURNSIDE HALL on SATURDAY 30

BALMULLO PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Sarah Else
It’s great to be back and into, what is already becoming, a
busy term.
Our new primary one pupils have settled in beautifully to
class and our new nursery children have also made
themselves at home.
We have changes in staffing this session and I would like to welcome
Mrs Gratzke and Mrs Duncan to our staff, I hope they will both be very
happy working with us.
We always like to celebrate pupils’ wider achievement and I am
pleased to be able to congratulate our budding gardeners on their
success in the novice section of the Leuchars and District gardening
and Crafts Club Summer Show 2010. Within this section they received
awards for their turnips, onions, peas, beetroot, beans and carrots.
Many thanks to Fiona Rennie and Bill Duff for their help throughout
the year and for stimulating the pupil interest in the delights of
horticulture.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thanks those community
members who took time within the holidays to cut our hedge. I realise
what a huge undertaking this must have been and cannot thank them
enough for their time and effort.
This year we would like to have more involvement with the community
and would welcome your ideas on how to develop this.
Becoming a “Rights Respecting School” is also a priority this year and
to do so we need to form a committee that has at least one member
of the local community that sits upon this. “Rights Respecting School”
sits perfectly within the new curriculum and teachers, children and
parents have reported that participation has resulted in:
Improved pupil self-esteem
Pupils’ enhanced moral development
Improved behaviour and relationships (reductions in bullying,
exclusions and improved attendance)
More positive attitudes towards diversity in society and the
reduction of prejudice
Pupils’ development as global citizens
Overall school improvement (including learning environment and
academic standards)

THE HEAD GARDENER We are now into September so it is time to start to clean up the garden
for winter. First is the hedge, get it trimmed and cleaned up and give it
a little feed, the next job is the grass which needs to get raked to get
dead grass out then give it a cut and then give it a winter feed.
The next job is to dead head the plants in your tubs and baskets and
give a light feed. You then go to the borders and cut out dead flower
heads which will let the later flowers develop. We then move to the
vegetable garden to lift the last of the potatoes, onions, beans, peas and any other vegetables you have.
My fruit has done well this year also my tomatoes. My greenhouse pot
plants have given a good show. I hope your garden has also done well.

DID YOU KNOW?
That on 6th June, 1900, Balmullo School closed for a day‟s holiday in honour of the British having taken possession of Pretoria? This was during the Boer War. According to the School Log Book the children were also given days off for the King‟s (Edward V1) funeral in 1910 and possibly his coronation - The 26th June 1902 is just listed as a holiday. The King‟s coronation was scheduled for this day but was postponed because he had an emergency appendectomy.
On 27th May 1904 the school was closed, for the first time, for Victoria Day. Queen Victoria‟s birthday was 24th May and this holiday is still observed in Dundee and Edinburgh. In the early years the actual topics taught are sometimes recorded in the log book and we have some information about the text books used. Some of the topics covered are: Asia, Solway Firth, Towns of Germany, Towns of Fife, Lakes and Rivers of Scotland, St Andrews, wheat, James V1, James 1, Robert Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots, Charles11
Younger children had object lessons on such topics as: cat, whale, cotton plant, sugar cane, coffee plant, squirrel, milk and butter, cow, camel, goat, wolf, carpenter, reindeer, giraffe, bear, iron, birds‟ nests Text books had such exciting names as; „Chambers Grammatical Primer‟, „Nelson‟s Royal Primer‟, „New Code Expressive Reader‟, „Neil‟s Arithmetic‟, „Nelson‟s Poetry Book‟ and „White‟s School Miscellany and Extra Reader‟ . The school was inspected annually and the grant received depended on the performance of the pupils. A summary of each report is noted in the log book. By 1901 these reports were becoming more detailed with ideas on schemes of
work and classroom organisation. In 1904 the inspector reported that: “The school is conducted in an earnest manner and with very creditable results. The best feature of instruction is arithmetic which is sound and well advanced. Drawing, too, is distinctly good. Intelligence, history and geography should however receive much more attention. The infant section read with a curious inflection at the end of every sentence and this mannerism should be corrected”. In 1905 he reported that; “an effort should be made to remedy the monotonous style of reading which prevails”. The master was given specific points for special attention in the Upper part of the school “1) the irregularity of slope of copy writing 2)The inaccuracy of the arithmetic in the boys section of class 3.” Throughout this time the numbers in the school remain about 90 being taught by Mr Murrie, the head teacher, and a pupil teacher. In 1907 the inspector suggests that they apply for a „General Aid grant‟ to increase the staff in the school. Unusually the report for 1907 was not good. “The writing and drawing of the seniors are very fair though too much of the drawing is done from the flat. The highest class acquitted itself passably under oral examination but below this there was a singular dearth of intelligence and information. Spelling was equally
defective. In the circumstances an unreduced grant for the senior division cannot be recommended. 'The inspector returned in October 1907 to check up on improvements and was pleased that some had been made. He suggested that the master could use the 'tattie‟ holidays to clean the classroom walls and improve supplies. I‟m sure that he was delighted! The Log Book is mostly very mundane but it gives an insight into life in our village outwith living memory.
