light box: design & builddescription:

this project is best de-scribed as three separate phases:

1. find, document, and diagram a space fea-turing both natural and artificial light sources

2. design and build a box which creates a dynamic composition with the change in light conditions

3. document the dynamic composition inside the box

parts:

plan and section drawings of the selected space

four drawings diagraming the light characteristics of the selected space

two mock-up boxes

one box: final design

six drawings representing the changing light condi-tions inside the box

All Lights On/Open Morning Light Artificial Light Afternoon Light

mock-up #1with my first mock-up i explored various construc-tion methods and materials. centered around a col-umn illuminated with light, the design incorporates a semi-translucent ceiling and backlit panels.

mock-up #2building on the design principles of my first mock-up, i changed the column into a funnel to better capture overhead light. i replaced the semi-translu-cent ceiling with a plexiglas floor and glass beads.

final designafter critique i decided to scrap my original design. the new design optimizes the two most-differing light sources, the ceiling lamp and late-afternoon sunlight, to create a dynamic composition.

an exploration of texture and tone, the as-signment consisted of scavenging random discarded items from which to create an in-teresting composition and then draw it.

a recreation of Gustave Caillebotte’s beau-tiful 1875 oil painting, this was part of an assignment to gain a better understanding of perspective in art.

CONSTRUCTIONWORK

for a period of four years i worked in a small construc-tion company specializing in high-end residential remodel. my primary duties dealt with project management, but i was often involved in the de-sign process as well as general labor. this included: electri-cal, plumbing, finish carpentry, tile, masonry, landscaping, and framing.

the admiral es tatethis 1919 craftsman located in the prestigious admiral district of west seattle received a complete renovation and remodel of both structure and grounds.

improvements to the structure were expansive. both plumbing and electrical were updated throughout the house. windows and roof were replaced. the home gained a new gourmet kitchen and expanded bathrooms as well as a garage addition and new deck. in order to accommodate these changes both the main floor and basement layouts were reworked.

to create a more impressive view from the street, the front and side yards were excavated and re-graded. the perimeter of the grounds gained an estate wall featuring a cultured stone facade and faux rod iron fencing. to increase privacy and decrease road noise, arbor vitae were planted behind the wall. entrance to the property was moved to the corner of the lot, and a con-crete walkway lined with a planting strip was installed to create a more park-like atmosphere.
