2010 Season Preview

A new era for Northwestern Statevolleyball gets underway this weekendwhen the Lady Demons, under thedirection of new co-head coaches Hughand Stephanie Hernesman, takes partin the Arkansas State Volleyball Classicbeginning with Friday matches againstLouisiana Tech and the host RedWolves.

After enduring a 3-21 record lastseason, NSU returns eight letterwin-ners and five starters while six new-comers join the team to provide addedtalent and depth.

“We're in a learning mode right now,so there is a lot of teaching going on,”said Hugh Hernesman. “But I reallyfeel like things are going well.

“A coach that I have always admiredonce said that competition was a timeto sit back and evaluate how effectiveyour training has been and what direc-tion you need to go for the comingweeks. There will obviously be teach-ing moments and opportunities toadjust our tactics early on. But withouta real opportunity to scout our oppo-nents and prepare like we will the restof the season, we're going to have tomake it work on the fly at times. Wealso believe that we've got a number ofcombinations and versatility in our line-ups, so I believe that there will be anopportunity to see different combina-tions together as well as people in dif-ferent roles.”

The following is a list of position break-downs for this year's Lady Demonsquad.

Outside Hitter -- Senior Taylor Deeringreturns to this spot where she played in18 matches last season and knockeddown 48 kills and had 29 digs. She'll beexpected to be the team's best on theoutside but will need to overcome someinjuries. Junior Megan Manning and

sophomore Nicole Hajka also returnfrom last season. Manning started in all24 matches and was fifth on the teamwith 94 kills while ranking second with240 digs. Hajka was fourth on thesquad with 78 kills last season in 22matches played. Newcomers KourtneyAdams and Jessica Guttierrez shouldbattle for some playing time.

Middle Blocker -- Laranda Spann andSarah Jones, two of the top three hit-ters returning from last year's team, returns and will be joined by juniorreturner Brittany Fruge and newcomerHolly Moreno. Spann, who will be asenior this year, ranked second in killslast year with 183 and a 2.10 kills pergame average. She was also third onthe team with a .157 hitting percentageand second with 58 blocks. Jones, asophomore this year, ranked third on

the team with 122 kills and a 1.40 pergame average. She was third with a.130 hitting percentage and 42 totalblocks. Fruge added 46 kills and 10service aces in 21 matches playedwhile Moreno, a junior college transfer, should see a siginificant amount ofplaying time.

Opposite/Right-Side -- Fruge seemsto be the top choice at this spot due toher ability to hit multiple tempo sets.Other options for the position will beSpann, Deering, and Guttierrez.

Libero -- Returning starter ZannyCastillo was injured on the first day ofpreseason practices and could misssome time. That will leave the liberoposition up for grabs among severalplayers, including, who was second onthe team with 208 digs and returning

letterwinner Lauren Peltier (103 digs). The newcomers of Sarah Gillis, LexiColvin, and Guttierrez are other optionsas Gillis could be the one to push forthe starting position while Guttierrezcould be the dark horse of the group.

Setter -- NSU lost one of its all-timegreatest setters when Megan Dockerygraduated last year. That leaves theposition wide open between Peltier, who was second on the team last yearwith 114 set assists, and newcomerLauren Joyner. Joyner had an out-standing club season and could be thefront-runner to be the opening daystarter.

“We've had quite a few highlightsfrom camp so far,” said Hernesman. “Ifeel as though the group is really con-tinuing to grow as they did the pastspring. If I were to point out some indi-viduals that have done it on a consis-tent basis so far, I would say thatKourtney Adams has probably raisedher stock the most. Sarah Jones is

another returner that has made quite animpression. Her strength has alwaysbeen her athletic ability, but she issoaking up our system and her offen-sive game is improving almost by thepractice.

Lastly, I would say that BrittanyFruge has also left a great impressionon the staff. She came into camp ingreat shape and that has helped a lot;but on top of that, she's been someonethat has stepped into the offensive voidcreated with the graduation of YelenaEnwere. We've got to find a way toreplace all of those kills and I think thatthese three in particular have shownthat they are up to the task.

“We're real excited with the new-comers and their ability to contributeright away. Sarah Gillis has made areal impression. She's got a real natu-ral touch and the things that I saw out ofher this past club season are showingup in our gym. I think our fans will enjoywatching her play, as she's got a realknack for the spectacular play.

“Jessica Guttierrez has also done agreat job so far. Pretty much everyteam has the one 'run through a brickwall' type of player. That is Jess for us.But on top of that, she's a skilleddefender and smart hitter. I believe thatthose qualities put her into the mix asboth a libero/defensive specialist andan outside hitter.

“Lauren Joyner battled a minor kneeinjury early in camp, but has also let agood impression. She is a natural atthe setting position as well as a playerwith strengths in other areas besidessetting.”

The Lady Demons will start the sea-son with 13 matches on the road beforethe Sept. 23 home opener againstStephen F. Austin.

NSU will play in the SamfordInvitational on Sept. 3-4 againg the hostteam, Tennessee Tech, Syracuse andNorth Texas. Following that, NSU will

play at the McNeese State Invitationalon Sept. 10-11 and will go up againstPrairie View, Louisiana-Monroe andUNO. The next weeked puts NSU inConway, Arkansas to take part in theUCA Sugar Bear Classic against UCA(a conference match), Jackson Stateand Memphis.

Laranda Spann returns as NSU’s top hitter.

Senior setter Lauren Peltier will look to beNSU’s primary setter.

Husband-wife combo of

Hugh and Stephanie

Hernesman named new

leaders of NSU volleyball

1st season at NSU4th season overall (47-43)

UW-Whitewater, 1995

Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman come to NorthwesternState after serving the last three years on the staff of BallState University of the Mid-American Conference - Hugh asthe top assistant and recruiting coordinator for the Cardinalsand Stephanie as a volunteer assistant.

"Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman bring a combined levelof maturity, experience, and knowledge which will be verybeneficial to our volleyball student-athletes and to the pro-gram, in general," said NSU Director of Athletics GregBurke. "They have been part of a national championshipcaliber program at Wisconsin-Whitewater and also havebeen successful at developing a program to a higher level ofsuccess, as was the case at Hardin-Simmons and mostrecently, at Ball State."

"Steph and I are thrilled to become a part of theNorthwestern State family and feel this is a great fit for bothsides," said Hugh.

Prior to arriving at Ball State, the Hernesmans spentthree seasons on the staff of Hardin-Simmons University inAbilene, Texas after an extended stint at the University ofWisconsin-Whitewater where they helped lead theWarhawks to the 2002 NCAA Division III NationalChampionship.

"The fact that two highly successful Texas-based coach-es - Julie Jenkins at Trinity University and Marci Sanders atUniversity of Texas-Dallas - mentioned the Hernesmanname to me when I contacted them about our positionspeaks well to the reputation our new coaches will have in astate (Texas) which is critical to the volleyball program'srecruiting efforts," said Burke. "Also relevant is the fact thatboth Hugh and Stephanie have had the chance to work witha quality and recognized mentor in Ball State coach DaveBoos, who had been part of a Top 10 program at theUniversity of Minnesota."

Boos said: "Hugh has the wisdom, demeanor, and per-spective needed to build a program. He's already done thatat Hardin-Simmons. He doesn't ride what I call the 'emo-tional wave' but rather, is mature and presents himself well.Stephanie was an outstanding collegiate player and knowswhat she is doing when it comes to training and developingplayers. They complement each other very well."

The Hernesmans transformed Hardin-Simmons into aconference championship in just three seasons. As headcoach, Hugh was named the American SouthwestConference West Division Coach of the Year in both the

She related very well to our players. In fact, when the Hernesmans left for Ball State, the greatrelationship that they had developed with our players madetheir departure especially difficult."

"They (the Hernesmans) turned Hardin-Simmons aroundmainly because of a tireless work ethic.....technically, theyknow their stuff," said Julie Jenkins, 25-year head coach atTrinity University and a Division III rival.

After Hardin-Simmons, the couple moved to Ball State

and helped coach the 2008 and 2009 teams to the Mid-American Conference Tournament, where the Cardinals lostto the eventual champions both seasons.

In two years, they coached two All-MAC performers aswell as developed two players that were named to the 2008All-MAC Freshman team. They also were a major factor inboasting Ball State's RPI from No. 254 in their first season in2007, to No. 152 this past year.

Hugh began his collegiate coaching career at Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1995 and helped guide the Warhawks to nineconsecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, including four Final Four appearances (1995, 2000, 2001,2002) and the 2002 National Championship.

His teams won six WIAC Conference titles and posted a305-45 won-loss record. He also developed and coachedeight AVCA All-Americans, including the 2002 NationalPlayer of the Year, 10 AVCA All-Region players, and 14WIAC All-Conference athletes.

Stephanie was a three-time AVCA All-American and All-Region honors as a player at Wisconsin-Whitewater from1995-98. She was the team MVP in 1995, '97, and '98 andearned NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team honors in1995.

During her playing days, she helped guide Whitewater tothree conference championships ('96, '97, '98) and fourNCAA Tournament appearances. Her 1995 team finishedthird in the nation.

Her teams posted a combined record of 134-21 for an86.5 winning percentage. She was also co-captain of her1997 and 1998 teams.

In addition to her coaching assistance at Whitewater,Hardin-Simmons, and Ball State, Stephanie also assistedthe men's volleyball team at Whitewater from 1999-2003;was the USAV Junior Tournament Director from 2001-04;was head coach of the Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club from2002-04 where her 2003 team placed second at the JuniorOlympics; was the camp instructor for the USA VolleyballHigh Performance Program in 2003 and 2005; and was thefounder and director of the West Texas Heat Volleyball Clubfrom 2004-07.

Said Stephanie: "We feel fortunate to have learned thelessons of successfully rebuilding programs and feel thatNSU has the pieces in place that will allow this sort of pro-gram transformation as well. It will take a lot of work from thestaff, the support staff and the current players, but it can bedone. We've been through the highs and lows and under-stand what it takes - hard work in the gym and in the class-room, a detail-oriented recruiting plan and a tactical systemto go along with solid opponent scouting."

Dr. Randall J. WebbNorthwestern State President

Dr. Randall J. Webb stated when hebecame Northwestern State University’s 17thpresident in July of 1996 that his primary objec-tive would be to help make his Alma Mater thebest institution it could be. It is apparent aftermore than 14 years that Webb is achieving that

admirable goal.Under his leadership, Northwestern became the first public college or

university in Louisiana to achieve 100 percent national accreditation ofall eligible academic programs.

Enrollment has reached record levels during Webb’s tenure as presi-dent and exceeded 10,500 for the first time in history in the fall of 2004.Webb has also been at the forefront in recent years of moving the uni-versity toward higher admission standards, which has resulted in someenrollment declines but in the enrollment of students with greater aca-demic potential and aptitude.

Retention has increased at the university, the average ACT score ofstudents has gone up, and high school student leaders are enrolling inNorthwestern in record numbers. There has been a substantialincrease in the number of high school valedictorians and salutatoriansamong first-time freshmen at the university.

External funding for NSU has also increased dramatically underWebb’s leadership. In the first capital campaign in its history, the univer-sity received $32.7 million to far exceed its goal of $18.84 million. Thatfunding included the establishment of numerous endowed chairs andprofessorships to enhance academic programs at the university. Inaddition to the private funding, Northwestern has received more grantmonies in recent years from state and federal agencies and private foun-dations than at any time since its founding in 1884.

Webb has also expanded the university’s outreach by spearheadingthe development at NSU of the largest electronic education and distancelearning network of any university in Louisiana. NSU offers courses anddegree programs to students across the nation and world throughInternet and compressed video.

Millions of dollars have been obtained during Webb’s presidency fornew and renovated facilities. A new $6.9 million Wellness, Recreationand Activity Center opened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, and Williamson Hall havebeen completely renovated and restored. Over $32 million in construc-tion by a private company has added two modified residence halls to thecampus in recent years. Funding has also been obtained to rebuild theEast and West Caspari Halls, and replace the underground electrical dis-tribution system.

Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams continue toreceive positive national recognition. The Computer InformationSystems program, for example, won five consecutive national champi-onships in academic competition in systems analysis, and the NSUmen’s basketball team defeated Iowa in the NCAA national champi-onship tournament.

A former center on the Northwestern football team, Webb is an avidsupporter of the university’s athletic programs and has held positions ofleadership at the national level in intercollegiate athletics. He hasserved as chair of the board of directors of the Southland Conferenceand has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Executive Council andthe NCAA Division I Board of Directors that oversee all major policy deci-sions by the governing body for major college sports. He currentlyserves as the Southland Conference representative on the NCAAPresidential Advisory Group.

A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business edu-cation, Webb earned a master of science degree in mathematics from

NSU in 1966. He received a doctorate in education from the Universityof Southern Mississippi in 1971 with a concentration in mathematics andresearch.

Webb was a member of the faculty of Longwood College in Farmville,VA, from 1966 until 1974. He served as Director of Higher Educationand Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department of Education from1974 through 1976. Hemoved to SoutheasternLouisiana University in 1976and in 13 years there heldpositions as director of insti-tutional research, EEO offi-cer, registrar and member ofthe mathematics faculty.

He became Dean ofInstruction and GraduateStudies and professor ofmathematics atNorthwestern in 1989. Inthat position, he was respon-sible for campus-wide policy development, planning, advancement, andreview of both graduate and undergraduate programs. While Webb wasin that position, graduate enrollment increased by 35 percent, and inter-nal funding for faculty research increased by 200 percent.

As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU’s successful FreshmanConnection Program and served as a member of the writing team for agrant proposal that resulted in a five year, $1.7 million Title III grant toimprove student retention. He also chaired the steering committee forNSU’s Self Study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

He has been active in the community as a member of the board ofdirectors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and as a memberof the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, theNatchitoches Historic Foundation, the Natchitoches-NorthwesternSymphony Society, Rotary Club, and the First Baptist Church.

Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduatesof Northwestern. Tamara and her husband, former NSU All-Americabaseball pitcher Reggie Gatewood, live in McKinney, Texas, with theirchildren Tyler and Ava. Lauren is married to former outstanding NSUbaseball player Nick Simokaitis, and they live in St. Louis with their sonsNicholas and Benjamin.

Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern Stateathletic program.

Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but alwaystaking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role player.

Beginning his 46th year on the university's staff, Pierce'simpact on NSU and the city of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily as Ripkin'sBaseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indelible.

He begins his 21st year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A sig-nificant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closelywith athletic director Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep

Northwestern athletics competing at a championship levelweek after week, month after month and year after year.

Pierce is an avid tennis player who has been a memberof USTA teams that have won more than a dozen state cham-pionships, five regional titles and one national championship.

Well before moving into the executive position, Piercehad already served his alma mater, adopted hometown andstate with distinction. In his role as vice president, he over-sees university operations in athletics, alumni and develop-ment, public and media relations and assists President Dr.Randall J. Webb in governmental affairs activities. Many ofthose duties were his since the 1970s as he worked underfour previous presidents as Northwestern advanced fromNAIA to NCAA College Division to NCAA Division I athleticstatus in 1977.

A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainerfor the Demon football team during his college years, workingclosely with legendary coach Jack Clayton. After earning hisjournalism degree, Pierce went to work for the New OrleansTimes Picayune, serving as a reporter and editor. He wasnamed executive sports editor at the age of 24.

In 1965, he chose to raise his two sons in Natchitoches andreturned to NSU as sports information director. He was pro-moted to news bureau director two years later and assumedadditional responsibilities in athletics, alumni affairs and other

areas through the years. He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facility in Prather Coliseum

on the NSU campus, providing a home for an entity created in 1958. He establishedannual induction activities that remain in place nearly four decades later, and servedas director of the Hall for 19 years until his promotion to vice president forced him tostep aside from the volunteer post.

He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America, 1979;Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a pastpresident of the Southland and has served the conference through other offices andcommittee positions.

In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures by theTimes-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSUathletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling footballcoaching legend Eddie Robinson.

His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-StarProductions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star castincluding Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on theNSU campus. The movie's impact on tourism in Natchitoches continues to resonatemore than a decade later.

Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana'shigher education system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master of cer-emonies who has spoken at hundreds of events since 1965.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Pierce is a member of the JournalismDepartment faculty. He is the author of one book and editor of two others and haswritten thousands of editorials, columns, features and other articles for newspapersand magazines.

Pierce and his wife Regina, a teacher, live on Cane River Lake in Natchitoches. Hehas two sons, Randy and Rick, both NSU graduates; and three grandchildren, twinsEvan and Amanda, 21, and Miranda, 10, and two stepchildren, Nicholas and Natalie.

Athletic Administration

Great Tradition • Brighter Future www.nsudemons.com 27

Beginning his 15th year as director of athleticsat Northwestern State, Greg Burke has receivednational acclaim for the job he's done in his adopt-ed hometown.

Athletics director at Northwestern since speak-ing at the annual NSU/Independence Bowl KickoffLuncheon on August 29, 1996, Burke is thelongest-serving AD at any Louisiana institution.

He has steered NSU athletics to many of itsgreatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded cham-pionship caliber teams in nearly all of the school's NCAADivision I sports.

In June, he was included among 29 winners of the UnderAmour AD of the Year Award presented by the NationalAssociation of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

He was also among four winners chosen to be involvedin a Street and Smith's SportsBusiness Journal panel dis-cussion on current Division I athletics issues. Joining NSU'sBurke were Purdue's Morgan Burke (no relation), Samford'sBob Roller and Lee Fowler of North Carolina State, with thetranscript of their discussion distributed to national media bythe Sports Business Daily. Burke is the 2010-11 presidentof the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics DirectorsAssociation.

Burke's 14 years as athletic director include 32Southland Conference regular-season or tournament cham-pionships, 51 All-American and Academic All-American stu-dent athletes, and three U.S. Olympic competitors.Seventeen NSU teams have taken part in NCAA or WNITpostseason competition.

Under his guidance, Northwestern State has led all 13 public institutions inLouisiana, and all 12 Southland Conference institutions, in the NCAA'sAcademic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate reports. The school'sathletic facilities have undergone nearly $6 million in improvements in the pastfour years.

NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only) SouthlandConference member in the league's five decades of history to sweep football, men's basketball and baseball championships in the same athletic year. It'sbeen done only once in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time by MichiganState in 1979-80.

Those accomplishments have come with one of the more modest athleticbudgets in the state and conference. Burke's management skill and fundrais-ing ability have been pivotal.

Burke generated a $2 million series of sponsorships for new scoreboardsinstalled for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues and spearheaded the$700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues.

Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them tonational prominence in subsequent positions.

Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two, basketball's MikeMcConathy and soccer's Jimmy Mitchell, guided Northwestern in NCAATournament play in their second seasons and have been back to postseasonsince. NSU's 2006 basketball team scored one of the most memorable upsetsin the history of March Madness, coming from 17 down to stun No. 15-rankedIowa 64-63.

Burke has selected head coaches who have subsequently been hired byAlabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi Stateand Wichita State.

From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of havinga balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strideshave been made in women's athletics under his guidance. The NSU soccerprogram was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament.Volleyball set attendance records and made its best-ever showings in confer-ence play in recent years. In softball, NSU posted the nation's most improvedwin total in 2010 regular-season play under second-year coach DonaldPickett. The Lady Demons joined Stanford as the only women's tennis pro-grams in the country in 2010 with only one regular-season loss, while sweep-ing Southland regular-season and tournament titles and making a first-everNCAA Team Tournament appearance.

While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been a

source of pride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone whichhas been set within the NSU athletic program as it relates to academicachievement and community service.

The academic accomplishments are reflected annually in the NCAA's APRand GSR studies. Community service by NSU student-athletes, coaches andstaff more than doubled to over 5,000 hours in 2009-10.

Recently, Burke spearheaded the adoption of the slogan “Great Tradition,Brighter Future” for NSU Athletics, and the creation of NSU Athletics“Cornerstones” for student-athletes: “Academic Achievement, PersonalResponsibility, Competitive Success … Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Day!”

In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America FootballFoundation's Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award andthat same year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish CenlaNewsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper's editorial staff.

He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from hisalma mater, Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recog-nizing his community service and professional achieve-ments. Burke became one of only 21 alumni honored sincethe award was instituted in 1982.

In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist atthe National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors con-vention in New Orleans, addressing members of the CollegeAthletic Business Managers of America and also participat-ing in a panel discussion of "Fundraising from an AthleticDirector's Perspective" speaking to the National Associationof Athletic Development Directors.

Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigiousNCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the NCAABoard of Directors on key issues facing Division I athletics. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division

I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and concurrentlyserved a term on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committeethat administers the national playoffs. Since his committee

term expired, Burke has served as a site supervisor for Football ChampionshipSubdivision playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of thecountry's premiere advocates of FCS football. He currently is third vice-pres-ident of the FCS Athletic Director's Association.

In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating, "fully certified," from theNational Collegiate Athletic Association, affirming that Northwestern operatesits athletic program in substantial conformity with operating principles adoptedby the NCAA Division I membership.

Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remainsactive in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee forthe Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a former president of theNatchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American HeartAssociation and was 2010 March of Dimes chairman locally.

He and his wife, Susu, a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and elemen-tary teacher, have a 16-year-old daughter, Catherine, who is a junior at St.Mary's High School, a cheerleader, the point guard on the Lady Tigers basket-ball team, and a member of the tennis team.

Faculty Athletic Representative Jody Biscoe is Associate Professor ofPsychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, where he is thecoordinator for the undergraduate Addiction Studies, and SubstanceAbuse/Prevention concentrations. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty

Athletic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council. Since 2006, Northwestern State University has made numerous paradigm shifts in how

it addresses the needs of student-athletes; however, one thing has been consistent in thatits student-athletes are winners on the field and in the classroom. All have heard abouthigher educational institutions being penalized by the NCAA for academic improprieties.NSU has attempted to be a model program of “Doing Things the Right Way,” by followingthe Athletic Department motto: Great Tradition – Brighter Futures. This past year, NSUwas one of only four schools in the State of Louisiana that did not receive any penalties forlow NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, women’sindoor & outdoor track, and volleyball rating in the top three in the Southland Conference.Among the 40 Northwestern State student-athletes and athletic staff members who gradu-ated in spring 2010, 10 of the 20 receiving undergraduate degrees graduated either cumlaude or magna cum laude. Graduation rates of student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and football ranked in the top four of the Conference. Theseaccomplishments could not have been achieved without the support and efforts of the stu-dent-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administration.

Also, Jody is the Director for the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center atNSU. He has served on the National Addiction Technology Transfer Center's (ATTC) -Practice and National Leadership Institute Committee.
