PAPERWORK UPDATE !!Pioneer Outfitters will no longer be selling Alaska Hunting / Fishing / Trapping licenses!! We have been vendors for years and with the changes in our world, it is just too much beurocracy! Don’t worry, we’ll lead you through it and help you make sure you have everything you need when you arrive.

HORSES, HORSES, HORSES!!I was told two different times this fall that I should make sure that people know what they are getting into! Folks, this is a Horse-Pack-Trip-Hunting-Outfit!! We use horses on ALL of our trips, excursions and hunts! I am asked quite regularly, “What can I do to get into shape for this trip?”, the response is always, “RIDE”. By the time you are ready to get on the plane at the end of your trip, your butt will just about be ready to go riding. If you have the means, before you come on any of our trips, go riding. Toughen up your butt! (and your knees!) We are typically in the saddle for 4-8 hours a day, every single day. If you are not used to it, it hurts. Getting off your horse and

walking a bit helps, more than most people realize, but nothing really does it except more riding.

SCHEDULING CHANGES ARE COMING FOR HUNTS!We are always working hard for our hunters to have the best opportunities for the trophies that your dreams are of, and the next step we will be taking is to lengthen our hunts. We are working right now to change the 10 day time frames into 12 day time frames. There is no guarantee that this will be in effect for 2011, but I will keep you posted as I get the information. We have to work with the opening and closing seasons dates of the animals and with the actual number of days we can hunt. Our clients being happy and successful is and has always been first and formost with us here at Pioneer Outfitters. We believe this is an excellent plan.

“Trust in God, but tie your horse.”

Our 2010 Fall Hunting Season was a tough one. Tough on the guides and on our clients. The Dall Sheep were high and away and “almost there” (guide-speak for not legal). The Grizzly Bears were doing what Grizzly Bears do, which is makin’ babies (can’t shoot ‘em if they have young-uns) and traveling around (can’t shoot ‘em if you can’t see ‘em). The Alaska-Yukon Moose, however, were an even bigger bugger to deal with! They didn’t come out of the trees and didn’t hit the rutt on time this year. We all hunted hard and harvested some terrific trophies, but the over all feeling of the guides for our clients this year was disappointment. So, we chased longer and higher, tracked further and glassed endlessly, played

hide and seek, got a bit wetter than usual and did the job. No relief from the weather this fall, but we harvested some real beauties getting ready to go to their new homes. After so many years doing what we do, the way we do it and being really good at what we do tends to spoil us for the endless hunts with worried clients. A Professional guide knows that his (or her) first priority is always to be in tune with the client. When a client is worried, day after day, hunting day after day, it worries the guide. Not because the guide is worried about the outcome, but the state of mind of the client, the “get up and do it again” that the client has in him. The residents were busy elsewhere, so that was a plus but the NPS and rangers were out and about

and showing up at camps leaving notes of hellos and admiration for the camp set ups and the horses left in camps for the day. It was nice having Master Guide Terry Overly in the field guiding this fall. Truth be told, he did some major scrambling to keep things on track in all the different camps and checking in at the Lodge every couple of days, but it was fun for everyone and it is always a learning experience to have him guide. Pioneer Outfitters had some outstanding individuals for clients this last fall and it was a pleasure to hunt with them. It is one of the reasons this is a great life. Meeting people who are clients, most of us do, but spending the time with them that we do is something really valuable and cool.

To sum up the 2010 Fall Hunting Season, after 19 years with these guys...

WEATHER PERMITTINGWay up in Alaska wherever you are,If you’re headed out close or you’re headed out farAnd you’re going by plane you can add (and it’s fitting)I’ll be there Good Buddies,Weather permitting.

It could really care less what you’re planning or doing; An operation, oration, a wedding or wooing. When you go to the airport, you may need your knitting,For you’ll only be flying,Weather permitting.

I’ve fretted and stewed, I’ve stomped on the floor, I’ve shouted and screamed and I’ve started to roar,But you’ll always face this, it’sWeather permitting.

So don’t get disheartened in the far golden northIf you suffer delay as you sally forth.Just learn to relax without fretting or quitting. You can depend on one thing, it’s Weather permitting.

When the rich folks come with their clothing so fine,With their high fashion wardrobes and fine French wine,They’ll stop for awhile then continue their flitting,

Go on with their jet setting,Weather permitting.

Whether you’re working or playing aroundFlying through the mountains or over the soundIn what kind of season your travels are hitting,I will guarantee this, it’sWeather permitting.

It gets in your blood wherever you go.So I said to my Sweetie how I love you so!She said I adore you, come close where I am sittingAnd I’ll do what you want,Weather permitting.

When the grim reaper comes,I can see it all clear.I’m alone in my shroud, happy heaven is near.I’m coming Saint Peter, this old world I’m quitting,I’ll be along soon,Weather permitting.
