Foundation HistoryIn 1996, the district’s superintendent brought together a group of parents and business leaders to form the Franklin Educational Foundation (FEF). They shared a common vision of provid-ing resources that would enhance student learning, as well as strengthen the district. Despite challenges due to the economy and state funding, FEF allows innovation in education to continue in Franklin Public Schools. The opportunities and equipment provided by our grants address literacy and development in all academic areas. They expose students to a variety of experiences that broaden their knowledge of the world and increase their capacity to master the abilities required of them in both work and life in the 21st century. Since its formation, the Foundation has awarded over $900,000 in grants that have been integrated into the curriculum at all of our schools.

As we enter 2011, I am excited and honored to become the President

of the Franklin Educational Foundation. The Franklin Educational Foundation has a great history of supporting the educational needs within the Franklin Public Schools, which is evident as we approach $1,000,000 in grant awards for educators and our children.

Being a parent of two sons in the outstanding Franklin Public

Schools, I have a vested interest in their futures and I appreciate all of the corporate and individual donors and the countless hours that volunteers and Board Members put in to make this organization successful.

A committee within the Foundation completed research in 2010 and

we learned that we have one of the most prominent and successful foundations within the state. Yet, we always feel like we can do better and

more, so last year we added mini-grants up to $1,000 as a new program that teachers can apply for funds. In 2011, we intend to strengthen our communication and planning with the district, continue to build our corporate sponsorship and add an additional fundraising event, and these plans are already underway. We hope you continue to support our efforts and I look forward to seeing you at our first class events.

I want to personally thank all of you that support the Franklin Educational

Foundation and our children’s education in the Franklin community and welcome any involvement that will make 2011 another successful year.

Lots of Reasons to Smile!

Spring has finally sprung! Flowers are blooming, birds are singing and it’s time for the Franklin Educational Foundation’s 2010 Year-End Report. We hope you enjoy learning about our recent grant projects and the efforts that made them possible. Although the recession continued to have a significant impact upon individual and corporate contributions, our special events generated more support than we originally forecasted. We were fortunate to have sunny skies for our outdoor functions and great attendance at all of our events throughout the year.

Last year, we added the opportunity to honor a teacher during Teacher Appreciation Week. Families gave twenty-two teachers and administrators a reason to smile when they honored them with a gift to the Foundation on their behalf. We also introduced a new ripple to our walk/run event with the addition of the Lucky Duck Derby. It was hard to contain the laughter and smiles as a crane dropped 1,500 ducks into the Root River. All went as planned as we scooped out the champions and awarded the cash to the lucky prize winners. But when the rest of the flock escaped the barriers, it suddenly became a search and rescue mission! Luckily, our dedicated volunteers were able to capture all but eight elusive rubber duckies. The rest of the team is training for their next race in May.

The Foundation moved our annual golf outing to the fall and 120 lucky golfers got to test their skills driving golf balls AND marshmallows. The golfers also tried their skill at the bean-bag toss and shook dice to win cash, a TV and even a coveted iPad. We rounded out the year with our annual Auction & Casino Night that was enjoyed by 250 guests. During the voice auction, three families combined their bidding powers and won the opportunity to create custom custard flavors. Their concoctions are currently being featured on the 16th of every month at Omega Custard on 27th & Rawson. As a bonus, the Foundation receives a percentage of the sales of these specialty flavors, so give your family some smiles and head over to try their creations. Thank you to all of our friends who make our events true community happenings and raise the money for new opportunities in our schools.

While we have many reasons to smile as we look back on 2010, the decrease in school funding at the state level continues to impact class-room innovation and limits the ability to provide new programs and opportunities for our children. The Franklin Educational Foundation serves an important role in providing additional funding that encourages creative teachers to investi-gate new ideas and ensure that students reach their full potential.

No contribution is too small to make a meaningful difference in the education of our children. Thank you for supporting our schools and enhancing educational opportunities in Franklin. Your gifts give children, teachers and our entire community many reasons to smile.

Case Closed: Investigating High School Forensic Science – Franklin High School, $46,000 Following the District’s review of the Science Curriculum, and a growing focus on the necessity of scientific literacy, the decision was made to require a third credit of science at the high school level. FHS sought assistance from the Foundation for the purchase of investigative forensic lab equipment and materials for a new course offering, Forensic Science. Additional laptop computers were also purchased providing several laboratory experiences for the comprehensive forensic science course, as well as Anatomy & Physiology, Astronomy, Geology and Environmental Science courses. With the addition of 30 laptop computers, the department is able to increase the frequency of technology-based learning experiences in all science classes. “Enrollment for (the Forensic Science Course ) next year has increased to more than 160 students. This provides a highly engaging academic elective that provides excellent additional rigor to our program. This grant provided vital resources to the teachers allowing them to implement this course successfully.” -Chad Phillippi – Teacher Franklin High School

2010 Grant Highlights

Elmo Projection Units & SmartBoards – Country Dale Elementary, $7,950 The Foundation provided funding for three Elmo Overhead Projection Units and SmartBoards. The district is striving to increase the number of these in all schools. The technology is expensive, and requires teacher training for use. Schools and teachers need to present clear plans for training and implementation of this engaging, interactive technology. Country Dale teachers came to the Foundation with such a plan for implementing the new elementary school science curriculum. They also secured matching grants from their PTO and an anonymous donor that would increase the reach of this technology to each grade level, providing a total of eight Elmo and SmartBoard units.

Rapman 3D Manufacturing – Forest Park Middle School, $14,750 This request was for the purchase of a state-of-the-art 3D plastics prototyping machine for students to create working prototypes of design projects. This piece of machinery allows students to take a design that they have created, take it to a higher level, and help students become better risk takers and problem solvers once concept becomes reality. Example of activity: Students set temperature and speed settings on the prototyper. If the temp and speed are not calculated properly to the known material properties, their prototype will not turn out. Getting the experience on a machine such as this prepares students for what they will see out in the field if they are to pursue manufacturing, engineering, graphics and many other careers. “Chief Architect helped me learn what all goes into making a house, how much it costs, and how architects today use computers to plan

Engineering our Future Through Design / CADD Software – Forest Park Middle School $14,750 This project involved purchasing 3D modeling software to develop engineering units for 7th & 8th grade students. These architectural design software packages, Autodesk Inventor, Inventor and Chief Architect foster critical thinking, innovation and design skills that allow every middle school student the opportunity to explore careers in the areas of engineering, design and architecture. Exposure to these programs also helps students make decisions regarding which classes to take in high school.

Core Plus Extension Activities for 7th Grade Social Studies – Forest Park Middle School This grant provides engaging supplemental resource materials for the new core plus curriculum—a differentiated extension to the current curriculum where students get enrichment or remedial help. The activities cover a wide range of learners and encourage cooperation, creativity, higher order critical thinking skills, as well as inquiry-based learning. The materials take students out of their desks and into action, engaging them in historical simulations, debates, and games that bring history to life and help facilitate comprehension and retention. “It made us use our imagination, it was challenging yet fun. Digital Recorder & Accessories for Elementary Schools The Music Department requested a mini-grant to purchase digital recorders. This 21st Century technology provides opportunities for 5th & 6th Grade students to listen to, analyze, describe and evaluate individual and group rehearsals and performances.

Fun Adventures with the Flip Cam – Pleasant View Elementary The third-grade teaching team asked for Flip cameras for their students, with the objective of integrating them throughout their instruction. Flip cams are small, easy to use instant video cameras. The students experienced positive experiences earlier in the year with the use of borrowed Flip cameras from the Middle School. Videotaping allows students to share verbal information with a large group without the fear of speaking in front of a large group. It allows students to critique their public speaking, and to learn downloading and computer editing skills.

Enhancing Education with an Elmo – Forest Park Middle School Seventh Grade Social Studies Teacher, Linda Scherrer, requested an Elmo Projection Unit for her classroom to create more engaging, interactive lessons that increase student participation and enhance student learning.
