Dear Friends,

It is with joy in our hearts that we share with you in the pages that follow the blessings and growth resulting from our programs this year and their outreach to Christian Scientists and the community. In response to demands from our stakeholders, we are striving to serve a broader constituency.

In order to meet these expanding needs, A/U’s aim is to move beyond a model of yearly sustainability toward growth. This will ensure our legacy continues for another 50+ years. Looking forward, the goal is to build a global network through A/U summer camps and year-round DiscoveryBound (DB) programs that unite and connect young Christian Scientists enabling them to explore and value their spiritually unique view of the world.

Read on to find out more about the vision of A/U as we prepare for the future. Your support is what’s needed for us to continue delivering programs that satisfy the spiritual yearning of our youth.

With love and gratitude,

Anabeth Hormel Cox Chairman, Board of Trustees

In the fall of 2008, Adventure Unlimited’s staff

and trustees embarked on developing a compelling vision for the organization through 2015 to meet the ever changing needs of our constituency.

In developing our Strategic Plan through 2015, two themes emerged as we looked forward – service to mankind and a commitment to providing an atmosphere conducive to seeing healing in action. These ideas will carry Adventure Unlimited to the next stage of progress.

Our vision for 2015 is: To be recognized as a vital community where every individual experiences God, and spiritual seekers develop a commitment to healing and serving mankind based on the application of Christian Science.

Success in achieving core strategies will require A/U to be nimble, responsive, and adaptive. The next five years in our history promise to be full of unlimited ideas and adventures! Progress updates and the 2015 Strategic Plan will be posted on our website.

Connecting Christian Scientists Around the World

DB’s Focus on Space, Science & Technology program was full of inquisitiveness and truly expressed our theme of “Divine Science alone can compass the heights and depths of being and reveal the infinite” (Science & Health 292:4-6). An incredible group of 89 teens, 40 chaperones and staff delved deeper into the connection between Christian Science and the infinity of space with the help of a variety of discussions and CS facilitators including Laurance Doyle, a renowned astrophysicist, who gave a much anticipated talk entitled “The Science of Christian Science.”

DiscoveryBound Leadership Conference (DBLC) – “Live it!” Sept. 3 – 6, 2010 A/U Ranches

As over 220 DBLC participants gazed across the valley from the open chapel at the Ranches on an ideal Labor Day weekend, you couldn’t help but feel everyone living the Conference’s metaphysical theme: “…be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” (I Timothy 4:12).

DBLC was about making connections. It was teens finding acceptance and inspiration as they opened up about how Christian Science relates to their everyday lives.

Adult chapter workers networked with dedicated peers in the field, sharing ideas on strengthening local CS communities. And new church contacts prepared to take home the DB spirit to share with their congregations.

Jean Burgdorff’s keynote talk on being a “Go-Giver” resonated with all. Other program highlights included Madelon Maupin’s presentation on Biblical Community, a spirited night time search by the teens for the Holy Grail – complete with Jesus, Moses, Ruth, Gideon and more –

and sharing fruitage around the campfire, to name just a few. Looking ahead – we hope to see you at the next DBLC, May 2012, at The Principia.

““...grateful to find the spiritual humility to serve... —NLC Teen

DiscoveryBound’s National Leadership Council (NLC) is a multi-year servant leadership program, dedicated to fostering spiritual growth, leadership qualities, and a service perspective on life.

Each summer, NLC classes come together for a two-week experience, starting with CS camp, followed by adventure and service trips and ending with individual contributions to a CS organization. This year was filled with myriad expressions of unselfed love.

NLC classes were engaged in outreach activities within the Christian Science community, as well as with people across the U.S. and with our neighbors south of the border. Teens on their service trip to Peru put in over 950 hours building a classroom and teaching classes in a small village. They

raised $4,250 to contribute toward this service project. Other NLC classes provided a meal at Tent City in Seattle, completed building projects to help two different CS camps, and high school seniors in the program worked as camp Counselors-in-Training (CIT).

Today, more than ever, there is a need to provide experiences that challenge, inspire, connect and bless our youth.

This is what we do at A/U—and it’s a partnership because we could not provide these programs without your support.

Last year, between all our Ranches and DiscoveryBound programs, we touched nearly 4,400 lives. Our goal is to build a network through summer camps and year-round DiscoveryBound programs that unite and connect young Christian Scientists enabling them to explore and value their spiritually unique view of the world.

As we work to reach this goal and support 12 months of programming, we need to raise over $2 million each year.

This does not include the ongoing need for capital and facility maintenance projects which exceed

our annual $3.5 million budget.

This year, your support in any one of these critical financial areas will move us closer

toward our goal of “being recognized as a vital community where every individual

experiences God, and spiritual seekers are committed to healing and serving

mankind based on the application of Christian Science.”

Here’s an update on where we stand.

I am supporting Adventure Unlimited because I feel it is vitally important to the future of the Christian Science movement. Each year the Campership Fund provides some assistance to almost 50% of the children attending camp at A/U. – Mary Sue Harris / Lincoln, NE

After attending the graduation of students in the DiscoveryBound National Leadership Council, I was so impressed with the love and enthusiasm expressed, and the good work done by these young people, it made me feel there is unquestionably a future for the Christian Science movement. – Jean Burgdorff / Merritt Island, FL

Our support of Adventure Unlimited is based on gratitude for what the camps provided our children. It is our hope that by continuing to share with A/U, other parents will have the opportunity to witness their children mature into successful young adults through the benefits of an A/U experience. – Carla and William Stillman / Clarendon Hills, IL

When I was growing up, I often wished I could spend more time with young people who thought the way I did. It is so important. It really can change your whole life. – Lottie King / Pierce, CO

By Willie Dalton

I t was a natural step for me to become a counselor this summer at A/U, having

spent the last three years as a camper in the Mountain Biking program. After a phenomenal time in staff training camp, I felt physically and mentally prepared for

the campers to arrive and the session to start! Finishing our first ride with campers filled me with a sense of life, love and happiness.

Yet the next day I felt hesitant on our descent down the hill, not trusting myself to stay under control.Approaching a technical section with less speed than was prudent, I hit a rock and flew over the handlebars of the bike. Arching toward the ground face first, arms out front, I landed with a crack.

As I picked myself up in a daze, it was evident my forearm was limp and at a strange angle. My first reaction was “oh, shoot it must be broken”, but I immediately countered it with “No!” Soon thereafter, a counselor who had been riding behind me pulled up and I asked him to repeat the Scientific Statement of Being* with me. I was able to calm my thought and for the next hour, the staff and campers shared comforting prayerful ideas.

Later the idea of having the bone set seemed practical. X-rays were taken and the material evidence suggested each bone had a clean break through it. I was told surgery would be needed, along with eight weeks in a cast for the bones to heal. Though the thought of surgery was discouraging, the medical staff was thoroughly amazed I was not in any pain.

Passing time back at camp, I felt as though something was wrong, that I still had something to heal. The

thought then dawned on me - this is not a physical malady that needs correction, but a mental image that needs to change. My attitude improved instantly and I began to progress without giving power to any so-called limitations.

A week after the surgery, I let go of my fear as the doctor was examining

new x-rays. The next words out of his mouth were: “Amazing! Look at all that new bone!” A flood of happiness and relief washed over me as he removed the cast. I was able to walk away from the experience grateful for having touched the lives of the doctors and nurses who helped me along the path to healing, having demonstrated there is no substance in matter.

Special Note: During follow-up visits to the hospital, Willie and the A/U Ranch staff shared eight copies of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures with interested hospital personnel.

Conquering Material Limitations

I began to progress without giving power to any so-called limitations.
