    The interim president of Buffalo State College and the entirecollege community honor the Class of 2010 by continuingthe tradition of the Commencement Garden. Inauguratedin 2000, the permanent garden is located outside the mainentrance to the Sports Arena. BruceJohnstone, with the support of his wife,Gail, served as president of the college from1979 to 1988 and as chancellor of the StateUniversity of New York from 1988 to 1994.

  • Welcome to Buffalo State College’s 2010 CommencementExercises! This is a day of celebration on our campus—celebration of ourgraduates, who have worked so hard to reach this happy occasion; of the familyand friends who have supported their efforts; of the intellectual enterprise that isthe core of our mission as an institution; and of the faculty and staff who makethat enterprise possible.

    To our graduates, I offer my most heartfelt congratulations. I know how hardyou have worked, and I know the deep-seated drive and determination that havebrought you to this day. That sense of purpose and ambition is tremendouslyadmirable. It will serve you well in whatever course you choose to pursue afterreceiving your diploma today.

    To our graduates’ family and friends, I offer sincere thanks for your part inensuring their success. Many among you have made sacrifices—large and small—to support your sons, daughters, husbands, wives, partners, and other loved onesin their quest for a degree. That is noble work. At Buffalo State, it does not gounnoticed. Thank you.

    And to our faculty and staff, I also offer my thanks, as well as congratulations foranother successful year in the life of our marvelous institution. You are BuffaloState’s lifeblood. We could not thrive without all you do, each and every day.

    In a few short weeks, Buffalo State College will welcome its eighth president,Dr. Aaron Podolefsky. With the arrival of a new president, a new chapter in the lifeof our college will begin. What will remain constant, however, is the strength thisinstitution derives from its extraordinary people: students, faculty, staff, alumni,parents, and friends.

    It is in that spirit that I encourage today’s graduates to stay connected to your almamater. You will forever be a part of this place. Your successes will be our successes,and ours will be yours. Whenever you can, take a moment to return to the campusthat nurtured you—even if that just means clicking through our Web site—andremember that you will always be welcome here.

    Dennis K. Ponton, Ph.D.

    The State University of New York Boardof Trustees unanimously voted to appointDr. Dennis K. Ponton interim president ofBuffalo State College on May 12, 2009.Dr. Ponton, the college’s provost and vicepresident for academic affairs, fills the vacancyleft by Dr. Muriel A. Howard, who waspresident of Buffalo State from 1996 to 2009.

    Dr. Ponton has been a member of the BuffaloState College faculty and administration since1977, when he was hired as a faculty memberand chair of its Nutrition and Food ScienceDepartment. He served as associate vicepresident for budget and planning foracademic affairs from 1993 to 2003, duringwhich time he also served as interim provostand vice president for academic affairs for twoyears (1998–2000). In 2003, Dr. Ponton wasnamed provost of Buffalo State, assuming therole of chief academic officer for the college.

    Dr. Ponton earned his undergraduate andgraduate degrees from West VirginiaUniversity, completing an A.B. in biology, anM.S. in zoology, and a Ph.D. in agriculturalbiochemistry. Prior to joining Buffalo State,

    he taught at West Virginia University and atthe Fayette campus of the Pennsylvania StateUniversity.

    Dr. Ponton has been active in educationalassociations and committees on the local,regional, and national levels. He has leddecennial Middle States Association ofColleges and Schools accreditation reviews forBuffalo State and guided preparation of theMiddle States Association’s periodic reviewreports. He is a member of the AcademicLeadership Learning Collaborative ofEduventures, a higher education research andconsulting firm. He has been active with theSUNY Association of Chief AcademicOfficers and the American Association ofState Colleges and Universities’ (AASCU)academic officer programs. Dr. Ponton wasalso an external reviewer for the AccreditationCommission for Programs in HospitalityAdministration and president of the ErieCounty Nutrition Committee.

    Dr. Ponton and his wife, Libby, have oneson. Their pastimes include tennis, handbells,and travel.

    Judy Elliott, Ph.D., is thechief academic officer of theLos Angeles Unified SchoolDistrict, the second-largestschool district in the country.Most recently, she was thechief of teaching and learning

    in the Portland (Oregon) Public Schools,and prior to that, an assistant superintendentof Long Beach Unified School District inLong Beach, California. Dr. Elliott was also asenior researcher at the National Center onEducational Outcomes at the University ofMinnesota, College of Education.

    She started her career as a classroom teacherand then school psychologist in Western NewYork. She received her B.S. in education fromBuffalo State College and her Ph.D. from theUniversity at Buffalo.

    Dr. Elliott has trained thousands of staff,teachers, and administrators in the United Statesand abroad in the areas of inclusive schoolingthat include the problem-solving process,Response to Instruction and Intervention,linking assessment to classroom instruction/intervention, the use of formative assessments

    and progress monitoring to increase instructionand behavior outcomes, and the role of leader-ship in systems change.

    She has written many articles, technicalreports, chapters, and books. Her most recentwriting efforts include Response to Intervention:Policy Considerations and Implementation;Response to Intervention Blueprint: District LevelEdition (NASDSE, 2008) and State LevelEdition (in press); Strategies and Tactics forEffective Instruction-II (Sopris West Inc.);Timesavers for Educators (Sopris West Inc.);Testing Students with Disabilities: PracticalStrategies for Complying with State and DistrictRequirements (second edition, Corwin Press);and Improving Test Performance of Students withDisabilities on District and State Assessments(second edition, Corwin Press).

    Sonia Sanchez is a poet,mother, professor, and inter-national lecturer on blackculture and literature,women’s liberation, peace,and racial justice. She haswritten more than 16 books,including Homecoming, We aBaddDDD People, Love Poems,I’ve Been aWoman, A SoundInvestment and Other Stories,

    Under a Soprano Sky, Wounded in the House of aFriend, Like the Singing Coming Off the Drums,and most recently, Shake Loose My Skin.

    Ms. Sanchez is a contributing editor to BlackScholar and the Journal of African Studies.Additionally, she has edited two anthologies:WeBeWord Sorcerers: 25 Stories by Black Americansand 360° of Blackness Coming at You. BMA: TheSonia Sanchez Literary Review is the first AfricanAmerican journal that discusses the work ofSonia Sanchez and the Black Arts Movement.

    Her numerous awards include a NationalEndowment for the Arts grant, a PEWFellowship in the Arts, the Lucretia MottAward, and the Community Service Award fromthe National Black Caucus of State Legislators.She is the winner of the 1985 American BookAward for Homegirls and Handgrenades, the1988 Governor’s Award for Excellence in theHumanities, the 1989 Peace and FreedomAward from the Women’s International Leaguefor Peace and Freedom, and the 1999 LangstonHughes Poetry Award.

    Her poem Does Your House Have Lions? was afinalist for the National Book Critics CircleAward. She is the Poetry Society of America’s2001 Robert Frost medalist and a Ford Freedomscholar of the Charles H. Wright Museum ofAfrican American History.

    Ms. Sanchez has lectured at more than 500universities and colleges in the United Statesand has traveled extensively, reading her poetryin Africa, Cuba, England, the Caribbean,Australia, Europe, Nicaragua, China, Norway,and Canada.

    She holds a bachelor of arts in politicalscience from Hunter College and completedpostgraduate work at New York University.She was the first presidential fellow at TempleUniversity, where she also held the LauraCarnell Chair in English. She is a recipientof the Harper Lee Award for a DistinguishedAlabama Writer (2004), the National VisionaryLeadership Award (2006), and the RobertCreeley Award (2009).

    Eunice Lewin was appoint-ed to the SUNY Board ofTrustees on February 2, 2010.Since 1979, she has beenemployed as a bilingual socialworker for the Committee onSpecial Education with the

    Buffalo Board of Education. Previously, she vol-unteered at Buffalo Catholic Charities in 1976before being employed there for three years as asocial worker and later obtaining a position withthe Erie County Department of Social Servicesin the division of child protection.

    Trustee Lewin serves on several boards ofdirectors, including as commissioner of theNiagara Frontier Transportation Authority;founding member of the Roswell Park AllianceFoundation; and member of the BuffaloUrban League, Hispanics United of Buffalo,and the Canisius College Board of Regents.She is also a member of the Erie CountyChapter of Links, the Hispanic Women’sLeague, and the Buffalo Niagara GuitarFestival Originators. She was honored withthe Ebony and Ivory Civic Award in 1994;inducted into the Western New York Women’s

    Hall of Fame on March 14, 2002; and receivedthe Governor’s Award for Excellence in Educationin 2002, the National Conference for Communityand Justice of Western New York 50th AnnualCitation Award in 2003, and the MarcusGarvey Community Service Award in 2004.

    Trustee Lewin was born in Guantanamo,Cuba. Her family immigrated to the UnitedStates in 1967. She earned a bachelor of artsin sociology from Marymount ManhattanCollege in New York City before moving toBuffalo in 1976. She obtained a master’s degreein American and Puerto Rican Studies in1978, and a master’s degree in educationaladministration in 1989, both from theUniversity at Buffalo.

    Her term with the Board of Trustees expireson June 30, 2016.

    DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD

    Linda Dobmeier exemplifiesprofessional accomplishment,community service, and sup-port for Buffalo State College.

    After earning a B.S. inelementary education atBuffalo State College, MissDobmeier spent 11 yearsteaching second grade at theWilliam Kaegebein School onGrand Island. She continuedher education during thattime, and received a master’sin education from the

    University at Buffalo and a master’s in businessadministration from Canisius College.

    In 1982, she left her teaching duties toassist in managing her family-owned business,Dobmeier Janitor Supply Inc. The locally ownedcompany employs more than 40 people. MissDobmeier has worked to build the companywhile maintaining its high standards for quality,integrity, and customer service.

    Miss Dobmeier joined the Buffalo StateCollege Foundation Board of Directors, whereshe has served as a member of the board, amember of the Executive Committee, and chairof the Nominating Committee. She was electedchair of the foundation in 2007. Under herleadership, it raised a record $8 million in fiscalyear 2007–2008. During the economic downturnin 2008, the foundation was able to maintain allstudent scholarships, and to take a lead role inthe new student housing project. Her leadershipand stability have been vital in the foundation’ssupport of the college during its presidentialtransition year.

    In addition to being an ardent andenthusiastic ambassador for the college, MissDobmeier is a persuasive advocate for the All

    College Honors Program and the BurchfieldPenney Art Center at Buffalo State, which shehas served as a member of its Board of Trustees.Miss Dobmeier is a member of the PetersonSociety, the college honor society for supporterswho have made a planned gift to the college.In addition to her many other roles on campus,she has actively supported the FoundationScholarship Galas for 2007 through 2010, andserved as chair of the foundation’s annual Golfand Tennis Scholarship Classic.

    Miss Dobmeier has been active in thecommunity as a member of a number ofboards over the years, including the RoswellPark Cancer Institute Board of Directors, theCanisius College Board of Trustees, the AmherstPolice Foundation Board, the Niagara LutheranHealth Foundation Board of Trustees, and theBrothers of Mercy Campus Foundation.

    Miss Dobmeier and Dobmeier Janitor Supplyhave been generous and consistent financialcontributors to Buffalo State College and theBurchfield Penney Art Center for many years.

    DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD

    Barbara Nevergold, Ph.D.,is an educator, counselor,administrator, and, since 1999,co-founder of the UncrownedQueens Institute for Researchand Education on WomenInc. Dr. Nevergold andUncrowned Queens co-founderDr. Peggy Brooks-Bertramcompiled and edited Go, TellMichelle: African AmericanWomenWrite to the New FirstLady, a collection of lettersand poems offering messages ofhope and advice to Michelle

    Obama after her husband won the 2008presidential election.

    Dr. Nevergold graduated from Buffalo Statewith a B.A. in French secondary education.She earned master’s of education degrees incounseling and French education at theUniversity at Buffalo and, in 1986, earned aPh.D. in counseling education, also from UB.She also studied French at Laval Universityin Quebec, and at the University of Dijonin France.

    She started her career as a French teacher inthe Buffalo Public Schools, where she also servedas a guidance counselor. She has been a vocaladvocate for parental involvement in the publicschools. She went on to hold major positions atseveral human service agencies, including executivedirector of the Niagara Frontier Association forSickle Cell Disease, vice president for children’sservices at Friendship House of Western NewYork, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Buffaloand Erie County, and director of student supportservices at the University at Buffalo’s EducationalOpportunity Center.

    She has served on the boards of directorsof several local organizations, including theGraycliff Conservancy, the Buffalo Psychiatric

    Center, Sheehan Memorial Hospital, and theAfro-American Historical Association of theNiagara Frontier Inc. Her success has beenrecognized with many awards, including theGovernor’s Women of Excellence Award inEducation for Go, Tell Michelle. The book alsowon the Letitia Woods Brown Memorial BookAward in 2009, presented by the Association ofBlack Women Historians. Additional awardsinclude the WNY Women’s Hall of Fame, theKeeper of the Flame Award from the NationalWomen’s Hall of Fame, the Community LifeAward from the Buffalo Urban League, theState of New York Dr. Martin Luther KingHumanitarian Award, and the Justice Awardfrom the Bar Association of Erie County.

    Dr. Nevergold has long been a financialsupporter of Buffalo State. With her brothersand sister, she established the Seals FamilyMemorial Endowed Scholarship in memoryof their mother, Mrs. Clara Ellis Seals; theirfather, the Reverend Willie B. Seals; and theirbrother, Kenneth Seals, M.D. She has alsomemorialized her parents by planting two treesin their honor in Buffalo State’s Maud GordonHolmes Arboretum.

    Sarah Fehskens earned abachelor of arts degree inSpanish language and literaturewith a minor in sociology, andshe earned a GPA of 3.83.The caliber of her scholarlywork is also demonstrated inher presentations, research,and participation in manyacademic enrichment programs.

    She was accepted into the All College HonorsProgram at Buffalo State, and she received theOutstanding First-Year Achievement Award.She also received the Ernest S. Falbo ModernForeign Language Prize. She presented herresearch twice at the Learning CommunityShowcase and served for three years as a mentorin a Buffalo State learning community thatexplores the roots of modern American culture,where she helped fellow students prepare confer-ence presentations and complete assignments.

    Ms. Fehskens participated in a study tourof Dublin, Ireland, and studied Spanish language,culture, and literature at the University ofSalamanca in Spain. While in Salamanca, sheworked as a volunteer English teacher. She alsoheld many leadership positions on campus,including president of the All College HonorsCouncil, president of the Spanish Club,student member of the Buffalo State CollegeFoundation, and representative of the Modernand Classical Languages Department to the

    School of Arts and Humanities Dean’s StudentCouncil.

    She is dedicated to scholarly research, andhas presented works including “Panic Splendors”at the New York State Sociological Association;“The Exile and Home” at the annual StudentResearch and Creativity Celebration atBuffalo State; and “The Open Casket” at theEthnographic Dreamworlds conference atBuffalo State.

    Ms. Fehskens has also demonstrated acommitment to serving others. She was activein a service-learning class project that benefitedtwo refugee centers in Buffalo. She has alsobeen active in community efforts to support anorphan rescue in Kenya; refugees in northernIndiana; and the Alamo Food and ClothingCenter in McAllen, Texas.

    Angela Lambrix earned abachelor of science in Englisheducation (7–12) with acumulative GPA of 3.97. Mrs.Lambrix, the mother of twoteenage daughters, receivednumerous scholarships and

    performed many acts of service that benefitedboth the campus and the community.

    Mrs. Lambrix came to Buffalo State tobecome an English teacher, a goal she formedat a young age but set aside for marriage andmotherhood. When she returned to college,she had a renewed sense of purpose, but her goalof becoming a high school English teacher hasevolved to a goal of earning a Ph.D. andbecoming a college professor.

    Mrs. Lambrix has been on the dean’s listevery semester, and she is a member of KappaDelta Pi, the international education honorsociety. She received a number of scholarships,including the Nicholas Patterson PerpetualFund Scholarship, the Business and ProfessionalWomen of Buffalo/Amherst Scholarship, theHazel M. Bleeker Scholarship, and the UnitedUniversity Professions Scholarship. She also

    received the Ross B. Kenzie Family PresidentialScholarship, and she was admitted to theRonald E. McNair Scholars Program.

    For the McNair Scholars Program, Mrs.Lambrix completed a research project, “TheLanguage of Oppression,” in which sheexamined the way that language itself can besymptomatic of patriarchal oppression acrosstime and culture. The quality of her scholarshiphas earned high praise from her professors.

    On campus, Mrs. Lambrix helped to establisha chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the internationalEnglish honor society, and served as its president.She also helped to run the department’s student-tutor writing center.     Rachel Berg earned a masterof science in education degreein childhood special educa-tion. Her cumulative GPA is aperfect 4.0, reflecting both heracademic abilities and theoutstanding dedication she

    brought to this demanding program.Ms. Berg earned high praise from her

    professors, the classroom teachers with whomshe worked as a student teacher, and facultymembers at Enterprise Charter School, whereshe worked as a member of the AmeriCorpsprogram. The faculty members of theExceptional Education Department selected herfor the prestigious and competitive scholarshipmade possible by the Joseph and Mary JeanDaly Varga ’43 Graduate Award Fund. She isalso a member of the Kappa Delta PiInternational Honor Society in Education.

    For her master’s research project, Ms.Berg and two other students investigated theeffectiveness of pre-teaching the necessaryfoundational skills to students who are at riskfor academic failure or who have been labeledwith a disability.

    She is equally impressive as a classroomteacher, where her ability to relate to childrenand her genuine love of teaching enabledher to engage students through exploration,investigation, and creative arts and expression.

    Ms. Berg’s commitment to service andcitizenship are demonstrated by her membershipin Buffalo State’s chapter for the Council forExceptional Children. She also served as vicepresident of the college’s Best Buddies chapter,which is an organization that encourages thedevelopment of friendships between individualswith and without disabilities. Her volunteeractivities include service at the UpgradeAcademics Summer Literacy Enrichment Campfor urban students; as a mentor and tutor forstudents with disabilities at Dodd Middle Schoolin Freeport, New York; and participation in after-school activities at Enterprise Charter School.

    Nicollette Brown earned abachelor of science degree inspeech-language pathology anda minor in art therapy, earninga cumulative 3.93 GPA.

    Ms. Brown decided tobecome a speech-language

    pathologist when, as a hospital volunteer duringhigh school, she observed a speech-languagepathologist helping a stroke victim regain theability to speak. In college, Ms. Brown continuedto volunteer both on campus and in the com-munity. She mentored young children, collegefreshmen, and students with disabilities. As avolunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of ErieCounty, she was named Big Sister of the Month.

    Her commitment to service is matched by herpursuit of excellence in her academic endeavors.She received the Anna P. Burrell Scholarship andthe George Dougherty Scholarship for HealthProfessionals. She is also a member of the ChiAlpha Epsilon National Honor Society, andshe was accepted into the Ronald E. McNairScholars Program, which prepares students fordoctoral programs. For her McNair Scholarsresearch project, Ms. Brown investigated

    drawing as an augmentative communicative toolthat may help people with aphasia regain verbalcommunication abilities. She was the firstBuffalo State student selected to participate inthe competitive, prestigious Rusk Institute ofRehabilitation Medicine internship at New YorkUniversity Langone Medical Center, where sheobserved nationally recognized speech-languagepathologists working with clients who presentedwith many different disorders. Ms. Brown is alsoa member of several professional organizations.

    In both her academic and service endeavors,Ms. Brown has been recognized as a personwith outstanding qualities that bode well for asuccessful career and a leadership role in hercommunity. She will pursue her master’s degreein speech-language pathology at LoyolaUniversity Maryland.

    Sooja Lee earned a bachelorof fine arts in metals/jewelrydesign with a cumulativeGPA of 3.81. She had alreadyattained a diploma as agemologist and jewelrydesigner in her native SouthKorea, and she holds a

    certificate in advanced diamond setting fromDrouhard National Jewelers’ School in Mansfield,Ohio. Her passion for the field led her to seekan excellent baccalaureate program in jewelrydesign in the United States.

    Ms. Lee’s work demonstrates an ability tograsp the complex ideation as well as the technicalcapabilities necessary to develop and executethree-dimensional objects. In 2009 and 2010,she received the seventh and eighth annualHyatt Design Award for Excellence in Metal/Jewelry Design, an award given to a studentdesignated by the program’s faculty members.

    Ms. Lee’s work has been included in severalstudent design exhibitions in the Czurles-NelsonGallery, including juried exhibitions. Her workwas also selected for inclusion in the Dean ofthe School of Arts and Humanities Gallery.

    In 2008, she was accepted to the HaystackMountain School of Crafts, an international

    craft school in Maine, to study torch-firedenameling. She was also selected to assistrenowned artist, sculptor, and metalsmithThomas Mann at the prestigious SmithsonianCraft Show in Washington, D.C., in 2008.She traveled to Chicago for the SculpturalObjects and Functional Art (SOFA) exhibition,and she has attended several national confer-ences sponsored by the Society of NorthAmerican Goldsmiths, a professional associationfor jewelry design and metalsmithing, to whichshe belongs.

    In addition to her academic work, Ms. Leeparticipated in student activities, including theInternational Student Organization. She is amember of Students Involved in the Art ofMetalsmithing.     Yolanda Rondon earned abachelor of arts in political sci-ence and completed two minorsin international economicsand international relations.She attained a cumulative GPAof 3.78 while participating innumerous campus leadershiproles, academic enrichmentactivities, and volunteer andcommunity service activities.

    Ms. Rondon came to Buffalo State Collegedetermined to attend a top-tier law school.While that remains her goal, her experience atBuffalo State has inspired her to pursue a careerin international relations, where she intends towork to bridge international differences whileencouraging others to take a more active role ingovernment and politics.

    During her freshman year, Ms. Rondonwas recruited to the All College HonorsProgram. She was also accepted into the RonaldE. McNair Scholars Program, and her researchas a McNair scholar focused on the EU Charterof Fundamental Rights. She has presentedresearch in many venues, including the NewYork State Political Science Association confer-ence, the Student Research and CreativityCelebration, and the SUNY Model EuropeanUnion conference simulation.

    Ms. Rondon is a member of three nationalhonor societies: Alpha Lambda Delta, Pi SigmaAlpha, and Chi Alpha Epsilon. She has completedthree internships, including one with

    Congressman Chris Lee’s political campaign andanother in the Office of the Attorney General inWashington, D.C. She also took an active rolein various student organizations, including theUnited Students Government’s Judicial Counciland the College Senate, both of which are gov-erning bodies on campus. She studied abroad inEurope, Turkey, and China. In addition she wasnamed European council president for the 2010SUNY Model European Union simulation bythe program’s director because of her substantivebackground in the policies and institutions ofthe European Union.

    On campus, Ms. Rondon is a residentassistant, a tutor in political science andeconomics for students in the EducationalOpportunity Program, and a mentor for theNIA program. She is president of the Kappa PiChapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.This fall, she will enter law school in pursuit of ajuris doctor and master of arts joint degree ininternational affairs to fulfill her dream of pro-viding greater service and progress to society.

    John McGowan earned abachelor of science in child-hood education (grades 1–6)with a concentration in socialstudies. His cumulative GPAof 3.96 and his other academicachievements are complementedby his extensive volunteeractivities and his full partici-pation in campus life.

    Mr. McGowan served as vice president andpresident of the college’s Emerging Educator’sChapter of the Association for ChildhoodEducation International (ACEI), and wasinstrumental in developing its agenda andactivities. Mr. McGowan co-presented “Play:The New Four-Letter Word,” a research projectthat explored the role of play in successfullearning, at the 11th annual Student Researchand Creativity Celebration. He also gave apresentation at the leadership seminar at ACEI’sannual international conference in 2010.

    In addition, he is a member of the college’sStudent Council for Exceptional Children;Kappa Delta Pi, the international educationhonor society; and Phi Alpha Theta, a nationalhistory honor society. He was twice nominatedto Who’s Who Among Students in AmericanUniversities and Colleges. He also served in thehighly selective position of student representativeto the Professional Development SchoolsConsortium, a partnership between the School

    of Education and 42 participating schools.Mr. McGowan earned high praise from

    teachers and administrators in the Buffalo PublicSchools for his volunteer work with students,which exceeded 1,000 hours. Other volunteeractivities included the Buffalo State CollegeClean-Up Day, the Polar Plunge for SpecialOlympics, the St. Vincent de Paul toy and artsupply drive, and the Love Canal 30th anniversarydemonstration. His commitment to makingthe world a better place was recognized withthe Democracy and Peace Service LearningCertificate of Recognition.

    His drive, enthusiasm, and energy haveenabled him to excel in the classroom as astudent and as a teacher. When teaching, he isvery creative in developing ways to help studentsunderstand and remember key concepts.
