Smith, a longtime Aledo resi- dent, is the new head coach of the Aledo Bearcats boys basketball team after spending time as the head coach for the Granbury Pirates. The lifelong basketball player and fan is an admirer of legendary basketball coach Bobby Knight and he uses a lot of his idol’s approach when he leads the young minds of Aledo’s finest on the hardwood. “The atmosphere around Aledo, it’s a winning culture and to me that’s going to pay dividends to us later on,” the UT-Austin grad said. “Just the fact that volleyball’s win- ning, football’s winning, girls bas- ketball is ranked 13th in the state; it’s our turn to step up as a program and do some things. And I feel good about it.” But Smith has a lot of new things to teach to a team that went 2-12 in District 6-4A play last season. The Bearcats were bit by the injury bug and players saw time on the bench due to wounds – everything from other sport activities to infected blis- ters. However, things could be turn- ing a corner for Aledo this 2010- 2011 season. “When football’s over with, we’ll get better,” Smith said. Football players Johnathan Gray, Matt Bishop and Michael Wilson are just three possible players who will join the Bearcats on the court after their time on the gridiron is complete. But no one knows when or how the defending state football champions will finish their current season. It’s possible that the players may not join the basketball team until late December. Until then, though, Smith is wiping the slate clean for the boys basketball team and emphasizing aggressive play and an effective defense. He lives by the old saying, “Offense wins games, defense wins championships.” “Our defense is absolutely ahead of our offense right now,” Smith said. We’re going to win games because of our defense. “I’m hoping the people here in Aledo will appreciate a good defen- sive effort every night because we’re going to give that.” The new coach has high hopes for returning senior Danny Glass as well as freshman Taylor Johnson. Smith hopes to have Johnson as a starting point guard for the next four years on an offense that he says needs improvement. “We just got to find a way to put the ball in the basket,” Smith said. “It’s not hopeless. We’ve got some people that can do some things.” The Bearcats tipoff for the first time this season Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m at the Aledo High School gymna- sium. BASKETBALL

New season, new coach, new attitude! Boys basketball hopes to win with effective defenseBy Dominic GenettiThe Community News

As his voice echos across the Aledo High School gymnasium, the Bearcat offense begins to pick up the pace.

He doesn’t intend to come off as mean; in fact, he’s far from that. Steve Smith just feels that aggressive coaching is good for his new varsity team. Smith, a longtime Aledo resi-dent, is the new head coach of the Aledo Bearcats boys basketball team after spending time as the head coach for the Granbury Pirates.

The lifelong basketball player and fan is an admirer of legendary basketball coach Bobby Knight and he uses a lot of his idol’s approach when he leads the young minds of Aledo’s fi nest on the hardwood.

“The atmosphere around Aledo, it’s a winning culture and to me that’s going to pay dividends to us later on,” the UT-Austin grad said. “Just the fact that volleyball’s win-ning, football’s winning, girls bas-ketball is ranked 13th in the state; it’s our turn to step up as a program and do some things. And I feel good about it.”

But Smith has a lot of new things to teach to a team that went 2-12 in District 6-4A play last season. The Bearcats were bit by the injury bug and players saw time on the bench due to wounds – everything from

other sport activities to infected blis-ters.

However, things could be turn-ing a corner for Aledo this 2010-2011 season.

“When football’s over with, we’ll get better,” Smith said.

Football players Johnathan Gray, Matt Bishop and Michael Wilson are just three possible players who will join the Bearcats on the court after their time on the gridiron is complete. But no one knows when or how the defending state football champions will fi nish their current season. It’s possible that the players may not join the basketball team until late December.

Until then, though, Smith is wiping the slate clean for the boys basketball team and emphasizing aggressive play and an effective defense. He lives by the old saying, “Offense wins games, defense wins championships.”

“Our defense is absolutely ahead of our offense right now,” Smith said. We’re going to win games because of our defense.

“I’m hoping the people here in Aledo will appreciate a good defen-sive effort every night because we’re going to give that.”

The new coach has high hopes for returning senior Danny Glass as well as freshman Taylor Johnson. Smith hopes to have Johnson as a starting point guard for the next four years on an offense that he says needs improvement.

“We just got to fi nd a way to put the ball in the basket,” Smith said.

“It’s not hopeless. We’ve got some people that can do some things.”

The Bearcats tipoff for the fi rst time this season Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m at the Aledo High School gymna-sium.
