2010 BAJA SAE COMPETITION

Quality Drive Systems (QDS) is once again proud to be a supporter of the Baja SAE Program for the 2010 competition year. We supply Continuously Variable belt drive Transmissions (CVT's) directly to Universities and Engineering Student Groups participating in this program. QDS has been offering CVT's and power train components for the Baja SAE program for 20 years. As a program supporter, QDS offers discounts on CVT’s to the engineering student groups involved in this project. We also offer an array of accessory components such as seat belts, FNR gearboxes, rack & pinions, etc. Our 2010 Mini-Baja catalog is specifically designed to further assist you in the understanding and selection of a suitable CVT for your vehicle. The models that we recommend offer the greatest efficiency. Your consideration in deciding which recommended CVT to select is then based on desired ratio, as dictated by your fixed reduction ratio and your vehicles' constraints. You can be assured that regardless of the model selected QDS will do its' utmost to supply an optimum system for your vehicle and assist you any way we can with our personal technical support. If you have any questions or wish to place your order, please contact us directly and we will assist you. Please include the name of your school on all communications in order to avoid any confusion. You may E- Mail or Fax your request and we will reply likewise with our specific recommendation and/or details. (Our E-mail address is: [email protected]). Thank you for selecting QDS for your power transmission needs. Good luck!!

For over 20 years Quality Drive Systems has been a leader in CVT products. These products been proven to be an efficient and cost effective method of power transmission for a broad arraylications including:

• SNOWMOBILES TO DUNE BUGGIES • CEMENT TROWELING MACHINES • ELECTRIC VEHICLES

This two pulley system consisting of a DRIVE pulley, DRIVEN pulley and matching “V” BELT, een referred to over the years as a “Torque Converter,” “belt drive transmission,” and most tly, as a “Continuously Variable Transmission” or simply “CVT.”

All references are correct since: 1) This system does convert torque through changing pulley 2) This system acts as an automatic clutch and variable ratio transmission and 3) The pulley change automatically and continually with changes in RPM and load, or torque demand. RE A)

The “Drive Pulley” or “primary” pulley is typically mounted on the engine and is a speed ive device that acts as a delayed clutching mechanism for load free engine starting and idling.

redetermined RPM, the sliding half of the pulley engages the belt and transmits RPM and UE to the driven pulley. As this occurs, the position of the belt moves from a very small radius rge radius, thereby affecting a change in pitch diameter and therefore the pulley ratio.

The “Driven Pulley” or “secondary” pulley receives the turning of the belt from the drive . As this occurs the position of the belt moves from a large radius to a smaller radius. In n, the driven pulley is “torque sensitive” and controlled by an internal “CAM” and “spring.” RE B)

This “torque sensitive” feature enables this two pulley system to automatically adjust to the t ratio for a given load. The result is the engine is able to operate at optimum horsepower and under a wide variety of load conditions. (FIGURE C)

Quality Drive Systems offers many CVT designs to meet the specific performance ements of a broad range of applications and horsepower. These devices are highly tunable so contact QDS for assistance in choosing the CVT that is right for you.

PROPER BELT FIT

Belts should not be too tight or too loose. Belt fit should allow a 1” deflection (see figure A). Belts with excessive wear or loose fit will require higher engine speed for engagement. Reduction in ground speed as well as pulling power will be noticed. Excessively tight belts will squeal, creep, and overheat.
