MISSION
CMMB 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 3
FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
AND THE CHAIRMAN OF OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
A JOINT MESSAGE
Dear Friend of CMMB,
Hope rising from the rubble. Growth in spite of a still-recovering economy. Smiles
where once there was worry. Perseverance against formidable odds. CMMB performs good
works that bring health and healing to people in need around the world, driven by our
faith and mission.
In reporting to you about our performance in 2010, we can emphatically state that our
faith-based work has brought about positive results in countless ways. In our 98th year of
service, it has led us to achieve many remarkable things.
As a faith-based organization whose mission is inspired by the healing ministry of Jesus,
we are guided by a commitment to the belief that health care is a basic human right. Our
good works stem from that commitment. Our employees, our partners, our volunteers all
embrace and believe in CMMB’s vision of a world where quality healthcare is available to all.
Hope rising from the rubble: We saw this daily in Haiti, where CMMB staff put their
personal family tragedies aside and were on the scene in minutes after the massive
earthquake of January. Their efforts helped tens of thousands to bear the terrible burdens
of the disaster and move ahead with their lives.
Growth in spite of a still-recovering economy: The effect of our faith-based work
received validation in the loyalty of our donors, whose gifts reflect an increase in private
giving of 39% over 2009.
Smiles where once there was worry: We were able to see this first hand on a Board of
Directors trip to Kenya, when we observed CMMB’s HIV/AIDS programs in the Mathare slums
of Nairobi. Those smiles were driven by the fact that available treatment gave them hope.
Perseverance against formidable odds: Because of their faith and belief that health care
should be accessible to all, in 24 countries around the world CMMB volunteers worked with
limited supplies and in under-equipped clinics and hospitals to train and to heal.
With every Annual Report, we take this opportunity to thank you for your support of
CMMB. We could never do our work without your faith in us. In FY2010, your unwavering
belief in our work led to milestones that were extraordinary.
Please take the time to look through this Annual Report and read about the work that
your faith in us has achieved. Your continued loyalty and endorsement of our mission is
most sincerely appreciated.
Thank you,

4 CMMB 2010 ANNUAL REPORT
HIV AND AIDS
For over a decade, CMMB has been a leader among faith-based organizations in the field of HIV/AIDS care,
treatment, and support. Through our work as part of the U.S. government-funded AIDSRelief consortium, we
provided life-saving antiretroviral treatment to nearly 47,000 Kenyans in 2010, and ensured continuity
of care for the HIV-affected pediatric population in Haiti. This year in Kenya, South Sudan, and Haiti,
CMMB’s mentors helped more than 24,000 people living with HIV/AIDS adhere to their medical
treatment and combat stigma within their families and communities.
CMMB strives to provide innovative programs to prevent HIV infection across all age groups and
genders. We significantly reduced pediatric HIV infections in 2010 by providing HIV testing
and services to prevent the transmission of HIV from pregnant mothers to their unborn and
newborn children to nearly 60,000 women in Haiti, Kenya, and South Sudan. We seek to engage men
in the promotion of healthy behaviors, such as reducing their number of sexual partners, living
positively, and participating in their family’s healthcare. Bolstered by strong support from the Ministries
of Health in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia, CMMB trained medical professionals to perform more than
15,000 safe male circumcisions, which have been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection.
MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH
CMMB embraces the research that demonstrates that women are
the key to sustaining healthy families and achieving positive health
outcomes. We work with local partners to provide a woman- and
girl-centered approach to health, with men as key supporters and
advocates. Our primary healthcare programs provide families with
services such as health education for expectant mothers and the
CMMB Programs
for 538,764 women and men that were helped
via CMMB’s maternal and child health, neglected tropical diseases and HIV/AIDS
programs. CMMB staff and partners can be found working faithfully in these programs
in Haiti, Honduras, India, Kenya, Peru, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia.
In addition, CMMB’s legacy programs, in operation for nearly a century, provide
support for this work through the donation of medicines and medical supplies and
the placement of volunteers. Here is what we have been doing:

provision of oral rehydration solution
and vitamin A serum. In 2010, com-
munity health workers made more
than 18,000 home visits to families
participating in these programs.
In South Africa, we addressed food
scarcity and nutrition among orphans
and vulnerable children by providing
meals and after-school care to 300
children. CMMB’s malaria prevention
programs promote the use of insecticide-treated nets, train healthcare workers,
and supply medicines to reduce disease and death from malaria, especially in
pregnant women and young children. This year, CMMB provided anti-malarial
medication to nearly 7,000 expectant mothers to reduce the risk of a complicated
pregnancy, low birth-weight, and anemia in their children.
NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES
AND OTHER COUNTRY-SPECIFIC PRIORITIES
CMMB’s founder, Dr. Paluel Flagg, began his work ministering to those suffering
from leprosy. CMMB’s commitment to the treatment of neglected tropical
diseases began then, nearly 100 years ago. Since 2008, CMMB has been working
in high-prevalence leprosy areas in India and Zambia, strengthening the capacity
of local health facilities to diagnose, treat, and care for leprosy patients. In 2010, CMMB assisted in the training
of nearly 500 community health workers and healthcare professionals.
In Haiti, CMMB has resumed pre-earthquake initiatives and introduced new programs aimed at the
long-term recovery of Haitians affected by the disaster. An important area of focus for CMMB is physical
rehabilitation for amputees. CMMB is a founding member of the Haitian Amputee Coalition, which has helped
more than 700 people who have lost their limbs receive prostheses and physical therapy, renewing their
hope for a better life. CMMB has also been working to reduce the impact of the cholera epidemic by providing
oral rehydration solution and antibiotics to support our programs and training community health workers
expressly to work on cholera prevention and treatment.
CMMB’s commitment to the treatment of neglected tropical diseases began nearly100 years ago.
Early in its history, CMMB ministered to lepers.

6 CMMB 2010 ANNUAL REPORT
CMMB Programs (continued)
1. INCREASE ACCESS TO HEALTH SERVICES THAT IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE
AND REDUCE PREVENTABLE DEATHS.
In 2010, CMMB counseled and tested 119,087 individuals for HIV, reached 146,915 with HIV prevention
messages, provided preventative antiretroviral treatment to 3,725 expectant mothers, and cared for
110,362 people living with HIV/AIDS. CMMB’s maternal and child health programs provided 16,273 young
children and 79,959 pregnant women with primary healthcare services.
2. STRENGTHEN HUMAN RESOURCES FOR HEALTH.
CMMB is working to bolster the global health workforce by placing medical professionals where their
expertise is greatly needed. In 2010, CMMB helped send 1,663 medical volunteers to 24 countries, where
they provided over $10 million in donated services. Through local partnerships,
CMMB promoted the training of trainers and motivated health workers to serve
in their home countries. For example, CMMB employees in Kenya, Uganda,
Zambia, and South Africa have worked together to train medical professionals
in their home countries on safe male circumcision protocols. In total, CMMB
trained 1,279 medical professionals and community health workers in 2010.
HEALTH SYSTEMS STRENGTHENING
CMMB’s work is guided by international health realities. As we focus on HIV/AIDS, malaria,
maternal and child health, neglected tropical disease, and other country-specific priorities,
our objective is to develop sustainable local capacity to address major healthcare needs
and build strong systems. We are always asking ourselves: “Will this activity be sustainable
without CMMB?” We accomplish this through the design and implementation of high-quality,
evidence-based programs, directed by the following six goals:
CMMB 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 7
3. BUILD SUPPLY CHAIN CAPACITY THAT WILL INCREASE
GLOBAL ACCESS TO LIFESAVING MEDICATIONS
AND TECHNOLOGIES.
CMMB collaborates closely with its partners to develop efficient and
effective supply chains for the provision and delivery of medicines and
medical supplies. Over the last decade, CMMB has provided over
$1 billion of donated medicines and medical supplies to more than 600
local partners in 100 countries. Because of its reputation for strong
leadership in supply chain management and its close
relationship with its consignees, drug manufacturer
Merck & Co., Inc. has selected CMMB to participate in a
vaccination program to prevent cancer valued at more
than $23 million in Honduras and Ghana.
4. DEVELOP STRONG FINANCIAL SYSTEMS
IN HEALTHCARE FACILITIES.
CMMB is helping many hospitals and clinics in Kenya go
paperless with integrated and computerized CMMB Health
Management Information Systems (HMIS). These systems
help facilities bill patients, track revenue, and build
programs that aim to report to the U.S. government and
other donors by public health outcomes. This is known as performance-based financing, and CMMB is
assisting in its expansion to several countries, in addition to Kenya.
5. SUPPORT PROGRAM MONITORING SYSTEMS AND KEY RESEARCH
THAT ENSURE QUALITY PROGRAMMING AND ADOPTION OF BEST PRACTICES
IN GLOBAL HEALTHCARE.
CMMB’s Monitoring & Evaluation team works with partners to develop reporting procedures that ensure
appropriate use of resources and create lasting change. The team routinely evaluates CMMB’s programs and
shares lessons learned that could apply to broader health networks both regionally and globally. CMMB is
accountable to its beneficiaries to provide quality healthcare services, therefore CMMB engages community-
based organizations, associations of people living with HIV/AIDS, and mothers’ clubs in the review of
program progress and future planning.
6. INCREASE THE ABILITY OF LOCAL LEADERSHIP TO EFFECTIVELY DESIGN
AND MANAGE PROGRAMS.
CMMB’s country directors and key staff members serve on technical advisory boards and work closely with
local Ministries of Health to promote the needs of those we serve around the world. CMMB’s program data
and evaluations empower community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and advocacy groups
to work with governing authorities to set health priorities. CMMB also helps identify the high-impact and
low-cost interventions required to mitigate disease and inequities in health services delivery.

FAITH WORKS – A GLOBAL PICTURE
1. Haiti: After the earthquake struck on
January 12, 2010, CMMB began providing
emergency relief almost immediately. With
more than $49 million raised in cash and
medical donations and 95 percent delivered
to the Haitian people, CMMB resumed pre-earthquake
initiatives and introduced new programs aimed at the long-
term recovery of Haitians affected by the disaster including
supplying medicines to fight the Cholera epidemic, helping
supply prostheses to those in need of limbs and providing
psycho-social support to children affected by the quake.
2. Peru: One of CMMB’s newest programs, Unidos Contra la
Mortalidad Infantil (United Against Infant Mortality) aims to
decrease morbidity and mortality in children under five
years of age in three key regions of Peru and is the result of
a partnership with Bon Secours Health System, CHRISTUS
Health, and Caritas del Peru.
3. Armenia: Healing Help sent 45 shipments of medical
supplies worth $5,074,832.
4. West Bank: Healing Help sent medicines and medical
supplies valued at $404,737.

Over the last decade, CMMB has provided more than $1 billion in support to
millions of those in need in more than 100 countries through its HIV/AIDS,
child survival, tropical diseases, donated medicines, and volunteer programs.
Here are some of our activities in 2010.
5. South Sudan: ANISA, meaning “together” in Zande, aims to
reduce the incidence of new HIV infections and improve care
and support to people living with HIV/AIDS. The program
established Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) centers
throughout three counties in Western Equatoria State where
CMMB trains social and community health workers to teach
prevention techniques and reduce stigma and discrimination
against people living with HIV/AIDS.
6. Uganda: Safe male circumcision is offered as part of the
Ugandan Ministry of Health’s comprehensive HIV/AIDS
prevention package, which promotes primary prevention
methods as well as counseling and testing. CMMB provides
technical assistance, including training for surgeons, in
addition to medical supplies for the program in the Apac
and Gulu Districts. As males are not traditionally
circumcised in Uganda, CMMB has partnered with
local community-based partners, such as the
Family Health Support Initiative (FAHSI) and
The Organization for Developing People’s Ability
(TODEPA), to conduct awareness campaigns
targeting district political and religious leaders.

8. Zambia: Zambia Leprosy initiative — “The Final Push” —
began in 2007 with a generous grant from a private donor.
The program combines leprosy-reducing education and
treatment programs in remote, high-prevalence regions. CMMB
trains healthcare workers and community volunteers at
faith-based health facilities in the identification and treatment
of leprosy and provides people living with leprosy treatment
and support. 70 healthcare professionals and community
volunteers were trained.
Recognizing that men can positively influence actions taken
by their wives, female partners and children, Men Taking
Action (MTA) is a program that aggressively targets men for
education on prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission. Through
education, the program addresses male attitudes and practices
that can prevent women from attending antenatal clinics and
accessing prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT)
services, including essential antiretroviral (ARV) treatment.
9. China: A CMMB volunteer from
Garden City, Idaho works as a
nurse in Beijing, where she
provides care and educational
programs for pregnant women
and new mothers.
10.Philippines: CMMB sent 28
shipments of medicines and medical supplies valued at
$13,563,595.
11. Micronesia: CMMB sent medicines and medical supplies
valued at $84,639.

7. Kenya: CMMB established one of the first prevention of
mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) clinics in North
Kinangop, Rift Valley Province, Kenya. To help treat those in
need, CMMB’s work with the AIDSRelief consortium provided
free antiretroviral treatment to almost 47,000 people in 2010
in addition to training community members to reach out
to expectant mothers and their partners and direct them to
antenatal and HIV counseling and testing services.
In pursuit of building local capacity for healthcare
services, CMMB-Kenya ran the Tusaidiane
program, which recruited medical and nursing
school graduates to work as part of a service
corps in some of the poorest hospitals
within Kenya.

Quest for Peace in Georgetown, Connecticut … and Managua, Nicaragua.
Their organization began in 1987 with one focus: help the poorest of the poor
in Nicaragua. They have been recipients of donated medicines and medical
supplies—and encouragement for their works of faith—from CMMB since 1999.
“Our efforts have been concentrated on working with
local clinics, particularly in the Barrio Schick. As we
travel in these rural areas, we often refer those with
no access to the Schick Clinic. The medicines provided
by CMMB often mean the difference between life
and death.”
Randy Klein, Connecticut Quest for Peace
CMMB delivers medicines and medical supplies to the
Reparto Schick Clinic, located in one of Managua’s most
dangerous and impoverished barrios, through the work of
CT Quest for Peace. The Reparto Schick Clinic provides
much-needed healthcare to one of the poorest communities
in Nicaragua, where homelessness and gang violence is rife.
Many of the homeless are orphaned children who gather in
makeshift homes in the local dump. They are often subjected
to severe illness and violence, and without the free clinic, would not have access to any
medical care. However, the Schick Clinic provides the impoverished of the barrio, such as
these children, healthcare at no cost. Through the Healing Help Program, CMMB has
shipped 21 donations of medicines and medical supplies valued at $7,300,653 to the
Reparto Schick Clinic via the American Nicaraguan Foundation or Food for the Poor since
2006. During the year 2010 alone, CMMB donations to the Schick Clinic were valued at
$232,320. The Schick Clinic then used the donated supplies to serve the impoverished
community daily, in which approximately 219,000 people have gone for medicines, supplies,
and services since 2006.
CMMB’s aid has helped the Reparto Schick Clinic, through CT Quest for Peace, treat
the impoverished of Nicaragua for chronic infection and a variety of complex injuries. With the help from our
donations of medicines and medical supplies, CT Quest for Peace, in collaboration with the Tiresian Sisters, can
support the free clinic in the Barrio Schick to better serve the medical needs of the community.

HEALING HELP IN 2010
Healing Help has, as one of its priorities, the provision of
donations in support of our disease-specific programs. Maternal
and child health, neglected tropical diseases, HIV/AIDS are
just a few of the programs that are strengthened by the life-
saving pharmaceuticals that are generously donated to CMMB
by medical supply and pharmaceutical companies.
In total, CMMB shipped 453 separate donations
of medicines and medical supplies valued at over
$164 million to 173 partners in 38 countries. Those
donations helped increase the capacity of health-
care services and make them more sustainable
over time. CMMB prides itself on its collaboration
with trusted, responsible and accountable partners.
We are able to assess needs and respond efficiently
and in a timely manner.
This competency was put to the test on
January 12, 2010, when a massive earthquake
struck Haiti. CMMB’s extensive network of
partners on the ground enabled us to identify
needs all over the country. We addressed the
needs of large international NGO’s, small local
organizations, and even those of individual patients.
Because of our expertise in delivery and distribution, CMMB
was able to not only identify the needs, but was able to
respond immediately.
During 2010, 500.2 tons of pharmaceuticals and medical
supplies, worth $46.7 million, filled 150 shipments to local and
international partner organizations in Haiti. These medicines
and medical supplies reached a population of more than one
million. CMMB purchased and distributed 3 WHO inter-agency
health kits, which provided essential drugs for 30,000 people
for three months. We continue to provide medicines and
medical supplies to our partners who are treating the victims
from the earthquake and outbreak of cholera.
Please join CMMB in praying that the worst is over for
the people of Haiti. We believe that the ‘faith in action’ of our
donors and partners and of the Haitian people themselves
will help to ensure a future where hope is not just a word, but
a reality.

MVP (Medical Volunteer program) – A legacy program
by propelling them to perform
works of faith and healing – three brave and stalwart CMMB volunteers
in the Nuba Mountains in central Sudan. Their dedication is indicative
of the work of 1,663 long- and short-term volunteers in 2010.
FaithWORKS
“I had always wanted to do some type of mission work where I could put my faith into action,” writes
Dr. Tom Catena. So, he became the medical director of Mother of Mercy Hospital, the only surgical
hospital in central Sudan. The demands on him as a surgeon were tremendous and he was pleased to
welcome Tyler Balding, a first-year CMMB
volunteer, to Mother of Mercy. Tyler was no
doctor, but he was a lawyer who put his skills
to work running the hospital. The CMMB team
in the Nuba Mountains was completed by
the addition of Laura Chenevert, a physician’s
assistant, another rookie CMMB volunteer.
Here is a glimpse into their life and work.
During his residency at Duke University, Dr. Tom
Catena was a short-term volunteer with CMMB
spending a month in Guyana then Honduras. After
completing his residency in 1999, Dr. Tom decided to
trade in the opportunity for a high income salary at a
prestigious hospital to become a long-term volunteer
in Africa. Dr. Tom preferred to work in a Catholic
mission hospital because he believed this helped
“provide the spiritual foundation which gives the work
its meaning.”
His first 2 years as a volunteer was spent working
in rural Kitui, Kenya. When his term of service was up,
instead of returning to the States, Dr. Tom decided to
extend his volunteer commitment and moved to
Nairobi, where he spent 6 years working at St. Mary’s
Hospital. At St. Mary’s Hospital he performed surgeries
ranging from mastectomies to appendectomies and
treated patients with common diseases such as
malaria and those with rare cancers. After work hours,
he would research the latest medical journals online to
make sure his patients were receiving the best
possible care.
Dr. Tom moved to central Sudan in 2007 to
volunteer at the Mother of Mercy Hospital, which he
helped establish with Most Rev. Macram Gassis, Bishop
of El Obeid Diocese. Dr. Tom saw Sudan “as a great
opportunity to get involved on the ground floor of a
new hospital in a country with tremendous needs.”
Along with being the medical director, Dr. Tom is
also the surgeon, internalist, obstetrician, gynecologist,
orthopedist and any other specialist needed in the
hospital. In 2009, Dr. Tom met with CMMB’s MVP
director, Richard Galentino, and discussed the need for
a volunteer with administrative expertise. This would
allow him to spend more time with patients and less
time running the hospital.
In February 2010, Richard met Tyler Balding and
thought his background would be a great fit as a
hospital administrator for Mother of Mercy. Tyler was
Dr. Tom Catena, a Catholic Digest“Catholic Hero”, at work.
CMMB 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 13
familiar with CMMB, being the great-grandson of its founder, Dr. Paluel
Flagg. Timing was fortuitous: Tyler was considering the next steps in his
life. Although he was a lawyer who didn’t have a medical background,
he had an interest in global issues and wanted an opportunity to help
people in the developing world.
By April, after email correspondence with Richard and Dr. Tom,
Tyler applied to MVP and anxiously waited until he was off to Sudan. It
took Tyler five days to reach Mother of Mercy Hospital from New York City.
Once he arrived, he quickly learned that his fear of not having anything
to do or getting in the way was wrong. Even though Tyler didn’t have a
medical background, he grew more familiar with the medical aspects of
the hospital out of necessity: “I try to learn everything I can anyway, but
sometimes necessity makes you learn that much more.” He enjoys the
work he does because it gives him the opportunity to “be involved in
something new every day. Some of it isn’t pretty. I do everything
from making top-level decisions to unloading cement from trucks
to dressing and burying the dead.”
Two months after Tyler arrived, Laura Chenevert joined the
team. Laura’s first experience as a medical volunteer was during a
one-month program in Guatemala in 2008. It became one of the
best experiences of her life, which she said “had far surpassed any
of my expectations.” A month later she received her Masters in
Medical Science and knew that she wanted to continue using her
skills as a physician’s assistant in the developing world. So, in
November Laura packed a few duffel bags and 50 pounds of
medical supplies, and then eagerly boarded a plane to join Dr. Tom
and Tyler in the Nuba Mountains of central Sudan.
Laura’s goal in life is to “pursue everything whole-heartedly and continue to
challenge myself and be exposed to new experiences.” Since becoming a CMMB
volunteer she has been achieving her goal. Life in a new country and working in a
different cultural setting with limited resources has been challenging, but Laura credits
her ability to be calm under pressure, flexibility and sense of humor as the characteristics
that serve her well in Sudan.
Working in a hospital with over 90% capacity means that every day is busy. There
are operating days and non-operating days. On non-operating days Laura joins Dr. Tom
to complete rounds of all the in-patients, which typically takes about 4-5 hours. After
visiting the in-patients, they move on to help the 3 out-patient clinical officers who see
an average of 200 patients a day. It’s not uncommon for patients to take days to arrive
at the hospital only to wait until the next day to see the clinical officers or doctor. On
operating days, Dr. Tom completes 6-8 surgeries a day. For most of the surgeries, Laura
works as the scrub nurse as well as the first assistant. Dr. Tom believes that “our faith is
what motivates us to keep pushing on with the work despite the isolation and daily
frustration of working in a remote, undeveloped region with little support.”

never be more true than in reference to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. CMMB has been
working—since its first pilot effort in 1999—to meet the challenge of this affliction
in the developing world. Our works of faith have been cited as best practices by
leading international AIDS organizations, such as UNAIDS, an agency of the United
Nations. CMMB’s work in HIV/AIDS is highlighted below:

16 CMMB 2010 ANNUAL REPORT
HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death among women of reproductive age worldwide, as well as a main contributor to infant
and child illness and death. Active participation in healthcare services by male spouses and partners should be part of the
solution. CMMB’s Men Taking Action program addresses male attitudes and behaviors that prevent women from attending
antenatal clinics and accessing prevention of mother-to-child transmission services for HIV, including essential antiretroviral
treatment. Men Taking Action empowers men to serve as positive change agents for family health, encouraging them to
educate their families about HIV/AIDS and participate in voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS.
In December 2006, CMMB launched Men Taking Action with a consortium of Church Health Institutions in Zambia, in
collaboration with the Churches Health Association of Zambia. The program has seen marked success in improving HIV/AIDS
prevention behaviors among both men and their partners. A recent evaluation indicated that 92 percent of pregnant women
in the program opted to take an HIV/AIDS test during an antenatal visit, compared to 60 percent at the start of the program.
Couples HIV/AIDS testing and counseling together increased from 3 percent to 70 percent. The program has also reduced
community-level HIV/AIDS
stigma and positively
influenced gender attitudes,
leading to a reported
reduction in spousal abuse
among 98 percent of
women surveyed.

Building on the success of the
program in Zambia, CMMB began
Men Taking Action – South Africa in
2008. The male-focused home-based
HIV/AIDS counseling and testing pro-
gram is implemented in partnership with the local Catholic
diocese, using their networks to identify households and
mobilize villages and communities to increase uptake of
HIV/AIDS services. Diocesan men’s networks are also
mobilized as channels through which HIV/AIDS education,
counseling, and testing is conducted. Since their inception,
the Men Taking Action programs in Zambia and South Africa
have tested 27,122 men and 50,273 of their partners for
HIV/AIDS and linked 4,460 HIV-positive pregnant women to
treatment services.
CMMB has expanded Men Taking Action to include
additional health services. Leveraging the same trusted
networks, the program now incorporates diabetes prevention
and management and testing for tuberculosis. Lessons
learned from Men Taking Action will inform future programs
that focus on health behavior change communication
strategies for men.

“What I learned and experienced in participating to
know the HIV/AIDS status for myself and my wife has
brought me close to my family. This program is
wonderful as it encourages men to be more responsible
for their families and to lead the fight against HIV.” — Phinias Matoto, 34, Zambia
Phinias Matoto and his family, helped via Men Taking Action.
Every year in Latin America, more than half a million children die, one-third of their
deaths attributable to five preventable illnesses: respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases,
malnutrition, measles, and malaria. Peru displays one of the highest maternal and child
mortality rates in the entire Latin American and Caribbean region. Wide gaps in health
status and access to health services persist across socioeconomic groups. Indigenous
groups face the most exclusion from every sector of society. Current indicators from the
Pan American Health Organization show that the infant mortality and chronic malnutrition
rates are also high.
Therefore, CMMB chose Peru as the location for the Unidos Contra la Mortalidad
Infantil initiative (United Against Infant Mortality), a primary healthcare program aimed at
decreasing morbidity and mortality in young children. The program takes place in three
key cities: Trujillo, Huancayo, and Chimbote. These communities identify infant mortality as
a significant problem, and all have large populations of women of reproductive age. In
order to implement a successful program with the possibility of future national scale-up,
CMMB has partnered with CARITAS del Peru, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word,
and the Sisters of Bon Secours.
Unidos Contra la Mortalidad Infantil seeks to strengthen the capacity
of the local healthcare systems, especially primary, maternal, and antenatal
services, and provide basic health education to expectant mothers and
young families. Home visits and community workshops focus on teaching
parents how to recognize common childhood illnesses and know when
and where to seek medical care. CMMB also educates families on nutrition,
including the importance of breastfeeding and providing iron-rich foods.
To help families access healthy foods, CMMB assists families in breeding
poultry and helps local primary schools to grow vegetable gardens for their
students. CMMB works closely with the Ministry of Health in all of its work,
and has helped the Ministry to develop school-based initiatives such as
de-worming and hygiene promotion.

with joy when we can prevent illness and death
in young children. Lack of education and access to treatment are major causes for
the high morbidity and mortality rates in underserved areas of the world. CMMB
and two leading U. S. healthcare networks—Bon Secours and CHRISTUS Health—
have partnered with Caritas del Peru to address this
challenge. Their partnership is a model for the expansion of
the global ministry for U. S.-based healthcare networks.

CMMB will work with the Good Samaritan Foundation, an arm of the Pontifical Council, and together
they will select a number of countries that are in great need of donated medicines and medical supplies.
We will work to secure the medicines the new consignees need and oversee the delivery of the much
needed items, door-to-door. Each country’s Papal Nuncio will be kept apprised of our work and partner
with CMMB to ensure the success of this initiative
in his country.
As a result of this humanitarian effort, CMMB
will be granted an annual private audience with
His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, for members
of CMMB’s Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Society.
Those members are CMMB’s most generous donors.
In the summer and fall of 2010, CMMB’s
president and chief executive officer, John Galbraith,
and the head of the Pontifical Council, Archbishop
Zygmunt Zimowski, worked in New York and Rome
to bring this alliance to fruition. CMMB’s Healing

its expertise in the garnering and delivery of donated medicines with the strength

Alana Gooley
Alana began working with CMMB in 2005, bringing with her more than 12 years of experience in the non-profit arena,
particularly in the areas of finance and compliance. Since arriving here, Alana has worked in CMMB’s U. S. and field offices
to help strengthen its financial systems. Additionally, she has collaborated with her colleagues on proposals that have
resulted in CMMB winning several government awards. This past year, Alana assumed a leadership role in the oversight of the
technology department and was responsible for the successful launch of the agency’s first Employee and Board of Directors
intranet. Alana continues to work across teams, most recently, being tasked with leading a group to help develop goals
and objectives for CMMB’s strategic plan. CMMB honors Alana for her ongoing efforts to help ensure that CMMB is able to
continue its mission throughout the world in large part due to reliable financial and technological operational systems.
Alana began her career as an external auditor with a public accounting firm, but quickly found that she drew more
inspiration from working with non-profits.

would immediately come to mind: her wonderful spirit of helpfulness
and her responsiveness in ways that are timely and correct.
CMMB 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 21For more information, go to: www.cmmb.org/international-employee-year-2010
Dr. James Eyul
Dr. Eyul is currently CMMB’s
Project Director for the ANISA
(meaning: “together” in Zande)
initiative in South Sudan,
an HIV Prevention and Care and Support Service project for families affected by AIDS.
He serves as CMMB’s country representative for Uganda as well.
Dr. Eyul’s passion to serve the people of South Sudan began in June 2007 when he
worked as a health advisor on an emergency health project in the Bahr el Ghazal region.
“My first week in South Sudan was a shock of my life,” he recalls. “While riding on a
motorcycle through the footpaths of a village, we would occasionally stop to ask for
directions. Boys, girls, and teenagers came to greet us walking naked. Meetings with the
local chiefs revealed that the only way their community sought protection from illness was
to sacrifice a goat or chicken every new moon, otherwise, they believed that they would
become sick and die.” At this time, less than two percent of children in the region had
received any vaccinations. Dr. Eyul worked tirelessly with the tribal elders to train selected
villagers, all of whom were illiterate, to administer vaccines. In nine months, his team had
helped communities in the Jur River County of Western Bahr el Ghazal reach almost half
of the children with life-saving immunizations.
After leading this successful project, Dr. Eyul joined CMMB. A decision that he says
was not difficult because he felt “even better positioned to respond to the needs of the
people of South Sudan.” He has brought with him to CMMB the same dedication that he
showed during those months in Jur River County. Dr. Eyul successfully launched the
ANISA program in a region with little infrastructure and unimaginable challenges. South
Sudan exhibits some of the poorest national health indicators in the world, struggling
with high rates of maternal and infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. In
just one year, Dr. Eyul and the CMMB-Sudan team have analyzed the local healthcare
situation, sought local support for the project, and created a compound which provides a safe working
environment for all the staff. The ANISA project has exceeded all of its year-one targets, including HIV/AIDS
counseling and testing more than 10,000 individuals and providing prevention services to 2,000 expectant
mothers. The team is looking forward to another successful year providing healthcare services to the people
of South Sudan.
Dr. Eyul shared that his “task and plan for coming years is to ensure CMMB is one of the lead NGOs
supporting health development in South Sudan and as well in my home country Uganda,” where he has
launched a successful pilot male circumcision program for HIV prevention on behalf of CMMB. CMMB joins the
thousands of people Dr. Eyul has touched in saying thank you for his enthusiasm and commitment to serve.

for each and every donor when they make a gift to CMMB.
In this section, all donors making gifts of $1,000 and above are listed here. This year, we
surveyed our donors and asked them why they give to CMMB. It was no surprise to learn
that their faith formed the basis of their gifts to CMMB. Here are a couple of their answers:
“Aside from the fact that CMMB provides excellent care to those in need with a truly
Catholic perspective, the fact that you have the highest efficiency rating by Charity
Navigator assures me that my money is being well spent. Thank you for your good work.”
“We support CMMB not only because of its mission, but because of God's command to love.
Through our support of CMMB we feel we have an outlet for demonstrating our love for Christ by
providing for God's children—especially those in most desperate need.”

CMMBCATHOLIC MEDICAL MISSION BOARD
S I N C E 1 9 1 2
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen provided pivotal support to Catholic Medical
Mission Board (CMMB) in its formative years and served as a member of
the CMMB Board of Directors from 1946 to 1976. To honor his memory, we
are establishing the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Society to recognize those
special donors who follow in his footsteps with gifts and pledges totalling
more than $1,000,000. Gifts of cash and property, as well as pledges made
through estate and financial planning also qualify for membership in this,
our most elite recognition society. Members are invited to join CMMB on a
private visit with His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, in Rome, with whom
CMMB has partnered to provide healthcare to those in need, and who is an
advocate for CMMB’s work around the world.
