2010 ANNUAL REPORT

PRESIDENT’S REPORTColleagues, Supporters, Volunteers and Parents: For five years we have embarked on a journey together. Together, we successfully navigated Canada’s worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. We successfully navigated the impact of a substantial internal reorganization and now, together, we are on the cusp of successfully navigating a six-million-dollar renovation. Surely if we can navigate a renovation of that magnitude, then we can accomplish anything. If I was to use one word to summarize my three terms proudly serving as President of the Board it would be; Progress. The momentum behind the Club’s evolution has been spurred on by the steadfast and passionate leadership of Executive Director, Ian Edward and his dedicated team further fuelled by the tenacity, creativity and oversight of the Club’s dedicated Board. The accomplishments during these past three years are not mine; they are ours and belong to the legacy of Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Clubs. It is through progress that we collectively strive for excellence. Today, we are an agency transformed. We have worked hard to become more independent and self-reliant. Accountability clearly demonstrated through having five consecutive balanced budgets. We have turned hindsight into foresight and have been aggressively building strong operating reserves to take us through difficult times. We see the importance of investing in human capital. As a result, we have completely overhauled our Human Resources policies to ensure they are current, progressive and compliant with the law.

Chris DunlopPresident

With the encouragement of the United Way and the blessing of the Kiwanis Club of Toronto, we will be ushering in newly crafted by-laws during tonight’s AGM. This change allows us to contemporize our by-laws; further ensuring that our membership and governance structure truly reflects the communities in which we serve. Lastly, we have grown. We have grown so much that we are now operating eight sites across the city. Also, we have grown our circle of friends. Friends who not only support our capital campaign, but also, our efforts in serving the children and youth of the Regent Park and Trinity Bellwoods communities. It has been a pleasure and an honour to have worked with the Club’s dedicated staff, volunteers and Board members. Thank you for allowing me to lead, support and grow with this organization. As I prepare to pass on the torch, I cannot help but reflect on our triumphs and look back across our Club’s seventy-nine year history. I am in absolute awe of the impact that we have made in the lives of Toronto’s children and youth. Share your passion; tell our story and help us achieve excellence. I expect nothing less.

STAFF, BOARD & COMMITTEES

REPORT OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEEIt gives me great pleasure to report on the efforts of the 2010 Finance Committee. This was a very exciting and challenging year of rapid growth for the organization. The Ministry of Health Promotions provided the organization with increased funding to address gaps in current service and/or meet un-met needs in after-school programming in the Regent Park community. This funding increase allowed us to deliver positive, healthy and active programs to new locations for a total of eight service locations in 2010.A special note of thanks goes to the Kiwanis Club of Toronto and the United Way of Toronto for their continued financial support as well as all other organizations, corporations, and private donors for their valuable contributions in support of our programs and services. In January 2010, the Clubs entered into an agreement with the Kiwanis Club of Toronto Foundation, the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotions, and the Federal Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, each providing $1,000,000 in funding to renovate and reconstruct the 101 Spruce Street facility. We also embarked on a Capital Campaign which had a successful year and had raised almost $400,000 by the end of the year. Subsequent to year end we were very excited to learn that Miles and Kelly Nadal pledged more than $1,500,000 in capital and program support allowing us to move forward with a fourth floor youth centre. Many thanks go to the Board, Capital Campaign Committee, financial supporters, volunteers and staff for their ongoing support of this project.

I would like to thank Leah Richards for all of her hard work as Treasurer through June 2010 as well as Meesum Ashraf for his brief but generous efforts as Treasurer in the fall. In early 2011 we welcomed Mamoorosi Raditapole, a parent and community member with an accounting background and master’s degree in business administration, to the Board of Directors and specifically to the role of Treasurer. We look forward to a very exciting 2011!

LEADERSHIP &PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Rick Walker first came through the doors of the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs Gerrard Unit as a curious neighbour in 2005. Soon, he was volunteering two days a week as a tutor, a mentor and a patient friend to children and youth in the Club’s literacy and tutoring programs provided with Frontier

RICK WALKER, VOLUNTEER OF THE YEARCollege. Rick’s dedication to members of the Club led to an invitation to become a member of the Board of Directors in 2007. Rick provided leadership to the Programs & Services Committee as the Club expanded after school programs to 6 sites. Always up for a challenge, Rick then took on the role of Chair of the $6,000,000 ‘Believe in Kids’ Campaign to redevelop the Gerrard facility. He was dedicated to ensuring the campaign had a strong case for support and a solid base of fundraising volunteers. He spent hundreds of hours working on the campaign materials and recruiting others to help in this historic initiative. Most importantly he asked many people to make our project a giving priority for the year. He went knocking on the doors of neighbours, friends and Bay Street and in doing so, raised over $600,000 by the end of the first year of the campaign. Rick’s passion for the work that he does, persistence that drives him to overcome any barrier he encounters and enthusiasm to support all Club members to achieve their dreams is an inspiration to the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs Community. Thank you Rick for all you have done and continue to do for the Club!

VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

More than 340 Volunteers provided the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs with 7140 hours of service in 2010. Imagine Canada & Charity Intelligence value each hour of Volunteer service at $15 - this means the Club benefited from $107,000 in service. Thank you to all of our fabulous, dedicated volunteers for the difference you make in the lives of our children, youth and families.

“I like the staff at the Club because they talk to you

and give you good advice and they teach you right

from wrong. When you ask them for help they always

answer.”

Khari has been a member of the Club since 2008. He is a daily participant in the Club’s basketball program, intramural leagues and Homework Club. He was a Leader in Training in the summer of 2010 and attended the Provincial Youth Conference at Camp Smitty in Ottawa. Khari is a great role model to his peers and younger Club members. Khari was inspired by his leadership experience, and in the future would like to work at a Camp in the wilderness.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPSCommunity partnerships are vital to ensure the continued sustainability of the Clubs’ programs, growth and learning opportunities for the boys and girls. In the past two years, more than 200 companies have already shown their support of TKBGC programs, staff and children.

The hundreds of relationships TKBGC has cultivated and nurtured over the years have enabled the Club to identify nine program areas that are suitable for partnerships. These community investment opportunities are perfect-fit for companies looking for innovative ways to integrate their CSR strategy into their corporate culture.

Cause Integration goes beyond marketing. Cause Integration allows companies to demonstrate their commitment through action by weaving their support into their company’s corporate culture. Companies are then able to engage employees in volunteer activities and inspire them to actively participate in other community development initiatives.

Aligning TKBGC community investment opportunities with each company’s corporate mandate, values and CSR objectives will help to ensure that we meet their internal stakeholder targets and exceed each partner’s broader
