In 2010, the American College of prosthodontists continued to ascend to more of a leadership among dental specialty organizations. the process of professional leadership by an organization requires several key steps. primary among them is the clarity of our message. In 2010, the ACp’s actions spoke clearly about our direct goals and the achievement in some of the following areas this past year.
the ACp represented and protected our specialty with the submission of the formal re-recognition of the Specialty of prosthodontics to the American dental Association’s Council on dental education and licensure. the report examines changes and trends that will impact the public and dental profession. As one of the most important member benefits, the ACp represents you and the specialty of prosthodontics within organized dentistry and to the public. the ACp also was responsible for hosting the dental Specialty Group meetings held in february and August. the gathering is a biannual event when representatives from the nine dental specialty group organizations gather to discuss items of interest to all specialty organizations. topics this year included the future of advanced dental education admissions, the AMA Scope of practice Challenge and the AdA’s Recognized Specialty logos.
the ACp also remained fiscally responsible by following a conscientious spending course and turning deficit spending into surplus budgeting. this success is due to two obvious, but important facts. one is that our membership is rising with membership dues collection running ahead of predictions and beyond forecast in 2010. Second, our Annual Session was the largest attendance meeting to date. this reflects both the growing membership and the planning of a valuable and entertaining event. despite the difficult economic climate in 2009 and 2010, the ACp continued to provide a remarkably long list of services to its members in support of the specialty.
In 2010, the ACp launched the inaugural national prosthodontics Awareness Week™. the national event engaged hundreds of our members in state and local events that brought the messages and actions of prosthodontists to the community. As an initial
grass-roots participatory celebration, npAW™ represented another step toward national prominence.
the College also supported its members in private practice by instituting a strategic communications audit of the membership. A detailed report was produced and the creation of a compelling video entitled “Kim’s Story” debuted at the 40th Annual Session in orlando. the outcome of this audit will empower the practicing prosthodontist in their own community, aid in defining the specialty and contribute to the growing reputation of the organization among its peers. the ACp also created important tools for practice including the prosthodontic parameters of Care, the Don’t Ignore Dry Mouth patient brochure and the Prosthopedia® the coffee table for patients and referring clinicians.
the ACp continued to support its educators and researchers with the ACp education foundation by establishing new opportunities. Continuing on the successes of 2008 and 2009, ACp educators and mentors gathered in the spring of 2010 for a detailed course on evidence-Based dentistry made possible with the partnership of the Academy of prosthodontics. In the research arena, the ACpef established funding for the Young prosthodontist Innovator Award, a research grant for young faculty in our dental schools. It is laudable that our small organization can leverage support and provide continued education and research activities among our diverse membership.
the ACp also produced the landmark evidence-Based Guidelines for denture Care with unrestricted grant support from GlaxoSmithKline. these were disseminated to the broad dental community by publication as a supplement to the february 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association and were reprinted in the ACp’s own Journal of Prosthodontics. this is but the first of several activities that demonstrate the ACp’s capacity to serve as a community thought leader for problems of merit.

40th anniversary the College commemorated four decades of serving the public and the profession. the yearlong celebration immersed the College in activities and events that highlighted the special occasion. Major projects during the year included developing ACp historical retrospectives such as the four decades of the College timeline displayed at Annual Session; the e-version of the article Presidents of the American College of Prosthodontists: 1970-2010; a four-part article series of the College’s history; and cataloging interviews with prosthodontic icons. other initiatives that marked the College’s 40th year included archiving photos and College artifacts; developing a searchable, online archive of all Messenger newsletters; and creating ongoing communications to members throughout the year via email and through the College’s website and Social Media outlets.

2010 AcpAccomplishments and Growth
In the past year the College has taken great steps forward in advancing the specialty and adding value to membership. advocacy
the ACp’s task force on the Re-recognition of the Specialty completed a comprehensive report on the specialty of prosthodontics that was submitted to the AdA’s Council on dental education and licensure, examining changes and trends that will impact the public and the dental profession. the ACp is the only organization recognized by the AdA to represent the specialty of prosthodontics.
MembershipWith more than 3,400 members, the College reached the largest number of members in its history in 2010. ACp membership increased by 6 percent from
2009. one of the most important membership benefits of the College is the representation of its members and advancement of the specialty of prosthodontics within organized dentistry and to the public.

national Prosthodontics awareness Week™ on March 7-13, 2010 ACp members across the country initiated the inaugural national prosthodontics Awareness Week™ with a variety of activities, events and community outreach to educate the public about the specialty and the benefits of seeking care from a prosthodontist. the College of prosthodontists advocates for the valuable role that prosthodontists play on the dental team and npAW™ focuses on raising public awareness about the critical importance of a healthy mouth.
education and Resources the College developed key resources for members such as the 4th ed. private practice Manual Cd, the prosthopedia® Coffee table Book and the Don’t Ignore Dry Mouth patient brochure. together with the ACp education foundation, the Young prosthodontist Innovator Award was created to advance the understanding of science that contributes to the understanding of prosthodontic tooth replacement therapies. expanded continuing education opportunities were made available to members during the 40th Annual Session in orlando, which was the highest attended Annual Session in the College’s history.
communications and Public Relationsthe ACp Board of directors, committed to effective communications with consumers and general dentists, commissioned a strategic communications audit by an external marketing firm. the audit was a penetrating and forward-looking study of the College as seen through the eyes of prosthodontists representing the spectrum of ACp membership. this was the first such audit in ACp’s 40 years. Bonner Consultants, the firm conducting the study, analyzed the communications and marketing output of the ACp for 18 months as well as conducted confidential interviews with members, ACp staff, non-members and other dental associations. the final report was presented to the Board during the 40th Annual Session in orlando. After formally accepting the audit, the Board planned to move forward with several major initiatives in 2011 including creating a substantive public relations function in the Central office; releasing the new video “Kim’s Story” in orlando for use by all ACp members and initiate building the new public relations program; create a new ACp consumer website; redesign the ACp Messenger to broaden the appeal of content for both members and consumers and design new corporate identities and logos for the ACp and ACpef.

capital campaign and annual appealthe Vision 2012 capital campaign pledge payments have continued to be on track for realizing an incredibly high rate of redemption, fulfilling the promise of this successful campaign. the rejuvenated Annual Appeal continues to grow under the leadership of AA Chair, dr. Greg Guichet. the Annual Appeal is critical to provide flexible funds to support projects that were not part of the deliverables of Vision 2012 Capital Campaign (e.g., national prosthodontics Awareness Week™). In addition, they are critical to providing the support needed to run the foundation (management expenses).
foundation Reaches Milestonethe ACp education foundation has reached a significant milestone in the process of establishing its long-term support for prosthodontics. the ACpef endowment fund has exceeded $2 million for the first time. like a retirement program for individuals, endowments are critical to the future of foundations and the missions they support. the fundamental premise is that the endowment principle must be protected. the foundation has maintained a policy of supporting the endowment with 40 percent of all capital campaign gifts. It is a critical component of a stable future for prosthodontics and the ACpef.
the foundation is working towards a goal of realizing a $10 million endowment so that the continuity of the foundation and the critical support it provides for prosthodontics can be ensured for generations to come. In the process of realizing this milestone, the foundation continues to fulfill a critical role of providing more than $300,000 in annual resources for programs supporting practice, students, education and research.
With Gratitude the success of Vision 2012 and the 2010 Annual Appeal is attributed to the commitment and enthusiasm of the foundation volunteers and Board of directors whose leadership impacted ACp members, ACp Sections, corporate donors and other groups that contributed to the foundation in 2010. together donations from these individuals and groups supported numerous programs for the benefit of the foundation, College and the specialty in 2010, many of which are highlighted in this Annual Report.
We appreciate your generous support in 2010 and look forward to continued success with you in reaching our goal to advance our specialty of prosthodontics in 2011 and beyond.
Sincerely,
