MINUTES OF 2009 MEETING

TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH Annual Meeting

Sunday, January 18, 2009 Call to Order and Opening Prayer The meeting was called to order in the nave by Fr. Jonathon at 12:25 p.m. He offered some words of welcome, then led a prayer to open the meeting. Declaration of Quorum The count was completed and a quorum declared. Appointment of Clerk and Parliamentarian Fr. Jonathon appointed Onva Boshears as Parliamentarian and Maria Thompson as Clerk.

Minutes of the 2008 Annual Meeting Fr. Jonathon asked for comments regarding the Minutes of the 2008 Annual Meeting. Donna Griffin noted that she had served only one year (rather than the noted two years) on the vestry to fulfill the term of a member who had left. There was a motion to approve the minutes as amended. The motion was seconded and passed by unanimous vote. Rector’s Report Fr. Jonathon said that he has enjoyed his time at Trinity, and had special thanks for the many people who have contributed to the well-being of the church:

The outgoing vestry members: Polly Spencer (Senior Warden), Doug Flessing, Leslie Foust, Pam Paden, and Keith Yehle;

Paul McLain, who has been a great blessing to the church in his role as curate; David Kent, George Wiley, and Charles Granger, for their help as Priest Associates; All of the staff at Trinity, paid and volunteer, who do so much to support the church and keep

things running well. Other items

Dan Northway will be a new Priest Associate. Bob Shahan has decided to fully retire and will no longer be our Bishop in Residence. He and

Mary Carol have decided to attend church with their family in Ottawa. Deacon Carolyn Graham has officially retired and moved to Missouri.

Report of the Nominating Committee Nominating Committee: Leslie Foust (Chair), Doug Flessing, Lee Heeter, Mary Mozingo, Pam Paden, Keith Yehle. Lee and Mary were at-large members of the committee, and all others were outgoing vestry members. The vestry had charged the committee with developing a slate of candidates (one person for each opening), rather than an open ballot.

For Senior Warden: Ellen Tracy For Junior Warden: Tom McCoy

Page 6: 2010 Annual Meeting Booklet

5

For Vestry: Dave Edington, Mark Holmgren, Micah Seybold. o A fourth person had been nominated, but backed out. A new person will named to the

slate and elected at a later date. For Endowment Board: Bruce Roberts

Election Tod Sutton made a motion to elect the slate by acclamation. Fr. Jonathon asked for nominations from the floor, and since there were none, he asked for a second to the motion. There was a second, and the motion passed by unanimous vote. 2008 Year-End Financial Report Treasurer Matt Lord explained that because of computer problems, he was unable to provide a full financial report. The year-end report for 2008 and the budget for 2009 will be presented at a later date.

He thanked Brad Chindamo for all the work he did during his several years as treasurer. He noted that the office staff had been very frugal over the past year. Many pledges for 2009 were lower than in the past because of the economy.

Annual Reports There was a motion to receive the annual reports as printed in the meeting booklet. The motion was seconded and passed by unanimous vote. Acknowledgements and Other Business A meeting of the entire parish will be held on February 8 to elect a fourth member to the vestry and review our financial reports. Tom McCoy thanked everyone who works at Trinity for no pay and little recognition. He had special thanks for Don Warders, who arrives at the church early every Sunday morning to open the building and clean the grounds before services. Fr. Jonathon thanked Fr. Paul McLain for his work as curate. Deacon Steve Segebrecht thanked Fr. Jonathon for all he does for Trinity. Elaine Penny had special thanks for Polly Spencer for her time as Senior Warden. Onva Boshears asked for a Resolution of Thanks to Ruthie Townsend and Barb & Don Roehl for all the extra work they did to pull together the Annual Meeting Booklet. Fr. Jonathon offered special thanks for the works of Judy Davis, Jim Ralston and Bill Stephens. Recess Debbie Pitts made a motion to recess until February 8. The motion was seconded and passed by unanimous vote. The meeting adjourned at 1:20 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Maria Thompson, Clerk

TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH Vestry Election and Budget Review

Sunday, February 8, 2009

Call to Order and Opening Prayer The meeting was called to order by Fr. Jonathon at 12:30 p.m. He led a prayer to open the meeting. Declaration of Quorum The count was completed and a quorum declared. Parish Reports TLC's report in the Annual Meeting booklet had not been reproduced in full as submitted. A revised report was presented. A motion was made to accept the new TLC report. The motion was seconded and passed by unanimous vote. Vestry Election Joan Ring was nominated to fill the fourth vacant seat on the vestry for 2009. Linda O'Donnell made a motion to elect Joan Ring by acclamation. Nancy Hanson seconded. The motion passed by unanimous vote. 2008 Year-End Financial Report Treasurer Matt Lord discussed the year-end financial report.

Our budget took a hit because of the bad economy. There were $45,000 in uncollected pledges, and no large gifts.

We had to borrow from our special funds to supplement the operating fund. 2009 Budget Matt presented the 2009 budget.

He noted that we don't expect our expenses to change much from 2008 to 2009. 2009 pledges are greater than those in 2008, helped somewhat by supplemental pledges that

came in after the stewardship campaign was completed. Pump and Pray will help supplement the 2009 budget by selling grocery gift cards. Trinity will

receive a small percentage of all sales. Tanya Low made a motion to accept the 2008 year-end financial report and the 2009 budget as presented. Dave Edington seconded. The motion passed by unanimous vote. Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 12:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Maria Thompson, Clerk

ELECTION AT THE 2010 ANNUAL PARISH MEETING At the Annual Parish Meeting, following the 10:30 a.m. service on January 17, the Nomination Committee will present the following persons for election to the Vestry, Wardens, and as Delegates to Diocesan Convention:

For Election to the Vestry Patricia Henshall (for a 3 year term) ~ I was baptized and confirmed in Grace Episcopal Church, Chanute, Kansas where I lived my first 18 years. I am a lawyer and have worked for the Kansas Judicial Branch for the past 25 years, most recently serving as the director of personnel. I was married to Greg Hazen on October 19, 1996, at Trinity Episcopal Church. At Trinity, I have served on the endowment committee, the newcomers committee, and vestry, and as stewardship chair twice, and as chair of a previous search committee. I am active in St. Petca's Guild and participate in the Ploughman's Luncheon and sale.

Debbie Pitts (for a 3 year term) ~ I was born in 1971. My father was in the Army, and as a result I moved around a lot while growing up. I was born in Topeka and was baptized in the Congregational Church in Massachusetts. I became an Episcopalian while living in Germany, was confirmed by the Bishop of the Armed Forces in 1985, and remained active in the Episcopal Church through High School. I graduated from high school in Junction City, Kansas while my father was stationed at Ft. Riley as a battalion Commander. After graduating from High School, I came to KU. I attended Trinity while a student at KU from 1989 - 1993 and, along with Andy, became active in working with the youth group from 1993 through 2000. Andy and I were married at Trinity in 1995. Our first child, Zachary, was born in 2001 and baptized at Trinity that same year. He is active in Sunday school and really enjoys having the opportunity to be an acolyte. Our second child, Courtney, was born in 2003 and baptized at Trinity in 2004. She is active in Sunday School. I have served the last 2 years on Vestry and am currently enjoying serving on the search committee for a new rector. Trinity is my home church and I enjoy so many things about the life of Trinity.

Ann Rosenthal (for a 3 year term and as Junior Warden) ~ I have been a member of Trinity Episcopal Church since moving to Kansas in 2004. I was born and raised in a Christian home. My husband, Dan, and I were married in the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Church while we both worked at Mississippi College, a Southern Baptist institution. We joined Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Auburn, AL in 1994, and were confirmed there. I subsequently taught at Defiance College, a United Church of Christ school, and at Baker University, a United Methodist school. At Trinity, I have served at the Farmer's Market, worked in the church kitchen on Saturday mornings, and been a member of the Trinity Environmental Stewardship Team. I currently usher at the 10:30 service and serve as intercessor. I recently joined the

Trinity communication team. A retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, I have a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Southern Mississippi. A former college professor, I also have extensive experience related to information warfare, politics, and intelligence. Born in Pryor, Oklahoma, I have lived and worked throughout the United States, and count Latin America as my area of special interest, although my travels have also carried me to Europe and the Middle East. Ellen Tracy (for a 1 year term and as Senior Warden) ~ A relatively new member of Trinity, I have had an opportunity to learn a great deal about the operations of the church over the past year. I would like to serve as senior warden for one additional year to see the search process, as well as other endeavors begun during this year, completed. Terry and I have been residents of Lawrence for five years and have been members of Trinity for a short time. Prior to moving to Lawrence, we lived in Topeka for a few years after having lived for many years in Wichita. We attended Grace Cathedral in Topeka. I am a retired attorney, having practiced in a Wichita firm for my entire career. My retirement made it reasonable for us to move from Topeka to Lawrence and we have loved everything about living here and attending Trinity.

Dan Ward (for a 3 year term) ~ I was born in Austin, Texas in 1966, a 4th generation Texan. I grew up in Tarrytown United Methodist Church, and went to college at Trinity University in San Antonio, majoring in Religion and Latin American affairs. During that time, I developed an intense interest in the sacred traditions from across the world, including the Bhagavad-Gita, the Koran, the Bible, and many of the Buddhist Sutras. I have sat in Buddhist retreats and attended Catholic Mass. What called me to the Episcopal Church is its emphasis on Communion and the work we do to create a sacred space, both in the world and in ourselves. I feel the Episcopal Church is also a place I can share with my family and pass on spiritual traditions to my children. I particularly credit Father Jensen for unapologetically testifying that the miraculous is not simply a psychological construct. As a Vestry member, I hope to use my experience in non-profit fundraising help the Church build its endowment

fund to complement its annual giving and to help build fellowship and community among families with Sunday school age children. For Election as Delegates to Diocesan Convention Nancy Kelley ~ Before moving to Lawrence in the spring of 2002, I was a member of Grace Cathedral in Topeka. Shortly after joining the Cathedral I became the Beadle for the 10:00 service. I had told David Porterfield that the Beadle looked like "a stage manager wearing a costume," so he told me to give it a try. It turns out, that is what the ministry is, and much more. I learned the ways of the Episcopal Church by taking directions from Kent Wingerson, the Cathedral Verger. It has been my privilege to serve for special events, especially on occasions when Trinitarians are participants. Since transferring my membership to Trinity in 2002, I have been active in the church community. I served on the vestry for the past three years. I take my turn at providing the reception after the 10:30 service and enjoy attending the six o'clock service. I served for two years as secretary for the Higher Education Committee for the Diocese. I commute to Topeka where I teach English and Communications at Topeka High School. Here in Lawrence I live with my partner, Brenda Clary, and our dog, Mickey. I enjoy reading, kayaking, and going to the Flint Hills at every opportunity. I am also an avid fan of Jayhawk basketball, both for the women's and the men's teams. I can't think of a better place to live than Lawrence, Kansas during basketball season.

Charlotte A. Mueller ~ I have been an Episcopalian for over sixty years with a role in many areas of service. Before moving to Lawrence, I was involved in the Diocese of Western Missouri and served as a vestry member, U.T.O. Chair, Church School teacher, Altar Guild member, stewardship co-chair, and a search committee member for a rector and a bishop. I have been a member of Trinity, Lawrence for eighteen years, serving as Representative to the National Cathedral Association, a member and directress of the Trinity Altar Guild, and co-chair of Trinity Treasures.

Austin H. Turney ~ I am a native of Lawrence and graduated from KU with a BS in Business and qualified as a Certified Public Accountant. I was baptized and confirmed at Camp Atterbury, Indiana while doing my Korea era army service. Work took me from Kansas City to New York City where I became a member of Trinity Church, Wall Street. There I met Ruth and we were married. I was one of the readers of daily evening prayer at that historic church. My work then drew me to Connecticut where Ruth and I became long time members of Trinity Church, Newtown. At Trinity, Newtown I was the second person licensed as chalice minister and served as assistant treasurer, search committee

member, vestry member, and warden. We were active in the Danbury Deanery. I served on several diocesan committees, as a member of the diocesan executive council and, in 1994, as first alternate delegate to the 71st General Convention of the Episcopal Church. That year, Ruth and I both retired and returned to my family home here in Lawrence. At Trinity, I have served as treasurer, vestry member, and delegate to convocation and convention. I was 4th alternate to the 73rd General Convention.

Ruth A. Turney (Alternate Delegate) ~ I am a cradle Episcopalian, baptized and confirmed at Grace Church, New Bedford, Massachusetts. After graduating from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, I worked for 15 years at Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. in New York City. During those years, I was a parishioner of Trinity Church, Wall Street where I served on the planning council. Later, living in Connecticut and a member of Trinity Church, Newtown, I served on the executive council of that diocese as well as on several diocesan committees such as Christian Education and Deanery Concerns. At present, I am a member of the Adult Formation committee of the Diocese of Kansas. Since

1995 I have been a committed member of Trinity Church, Lawrence, where I serve as Librarian.

INTERIM PASTOR’S REPORT THE REV. RONALD D. POGUE

In the Name of God, the Holy and Undivided Trinity. Amen.

Dear Friends in Christ,

During the first five months of my ministry among you as Interim Pastor, I have experienced generous hospitality, steadfast devotion, and encouraging progress with this community of faith. You have outdone yourselves and we are moving forward in hopeful expectation.

I am here because I am a transition specialist and have the privilege of walking with you during this transition to assist you in

• remembering where you have been, • claiming who you are, • strengthening your leaders, • drawing upon the resources of the wider church, • making a commitment to a new era of fruitful mission with your new rector.

Statistical information regarding attendance, membership, finances, and pastoral work is covered in other places in the Annual Report. So, I will highlight some of the accomplishments we have experienced with God’s help since Fr. Jensen was called to be Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Little Rock.

• Our devoted staff of twelve lay and clergy, paid and unpaid, full and part-time saints has worked diligently to assist in the ongoing life and mission of the parish.

• We have had exceptional pastoral care of the parish with a team of three deacons, an associate priest, and skilled laity.

• Attendance at our three distinctly different Sunday services has been encouraging. • The Vestry and Wardens have worked closely with me in making several timely changes in parish

administration, including: o Revisions and updates of governing documents o Improvements to accounting and financial reporting policies and procedures o Adoption of a balanced budget aligned with ministry areas and new outreach emphasis o Developing new written position descriptions for paid and unpaid staff o Strengthening the ability of the endowment to attract legacy stewardship gifts o Engaging in a short-range strategic planning process to

Clarify parish history, Assess present parish identity Create an new organizational model and begin to staff it, Identify goals and action items Assign responsibility and resources, Institute policies and procedures for fund raising within the parish

• We shared leadership with an exceptional team in conducting an effective annual stewardship campaign.

In the coming months, I am looking forward to continuing to lead the parish in a number of important actions that are necessary for a good transition in preparation for the next rector. Those actions include:

• Improvements in Christian formation for all ages • Increasing our interface with young adults at University of Kansas and Haskell University to facilitate

involvement of parish in greater support of campus ministries

Page 14: 2010 Annual Meeting Booklet

2010 Annual Meeting January 17, 2010

13

• Continuing enhancement of evangelism efforts with greater media presence, more effective response to newcomers, and more reliable systems for incorporating new people into parish life

• Continuing expansion of communications to include electronic newsletter, enhanced website, online pictorial directory, social networking, telephone tree, communications team, and a quarterly journal

• Auditing and updating membership records • Development of a functioning Property Committee to work with the Junior Warden • Continuing efforts to strengthen ties with the diocese and wider Church • Expansion of the of work of the Trinity Environmental Stewardship Team and their relationship with

newly appointed Deacon for Earth Care Ministry for the Diocese of Kansas • Guiding the Nomination Committee in managing leadership changes • Increasing our engagement with ecumenical partners in worship and in service • Heightening Trinity’s profile in the wider Lawrence community

There are several areas of our work together that deserve special mention. I’ll organize my thoughts along the lines of the Baptismal Covenant.

• The Great Commandment & Great Commission ~ Remember who you are! We enter the Church through Baptism. The presence of the water in the Baptismal Font at the entrance of the Nave is a reminder of that. Week by week as we enter the church, we are reminded of why we came back – to give thanks for the gift of new life in Christ, who gave us our mission in the Great Commandment, to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind and our neighbor as ourselves. While we are here, God feeds us in Word and Sacrament, blessing us with that which we do not have and cannot do for ourselves. Then, we are sent back into the world to love and serve others in Christ’s name. As we leave, the water of the Font is to remind us of the Great Commission. My friend and colleague, The Rev. Sam Todd writes, “The great miracle of the mass is not that bread becomes the body of Christ but that the Church does (cf. I Cor. 12:27). I would love to hear the bells pealing as Christ re-enters the world in the person of the members of his body at the end of the Eucharist.” That is the reason Christ created the Church and sent the Holy Spirit to empower us as a central part of his plan for the redemption of creation. That is who we are and that is what we do. Everything else hinges on that. If we are faithful in living out that miracle, God will provide us with all that is necessary for fruitful lives. We receive the Sacrament so that we might become the Sacrament to a world in need of hope, healing, and love to the glory of God alone.

• Continue in the Apostles’ Teaching ~ Participate in Christian formation. Surprisingly few people participate in ongoing Christian education and formation. The depth of Christian experience will be positively impacted by a commitment to Christian education and formation. I appeal to each one of you to make a renewed commitment to growing in grace and in the knowledge and love of Christ.

• Continue in Fellowship ~ Focus upon and be accountable to one another for the quality of the community of Christ’s people in this place. It is the most important asset of all. Every study of thriving mainline churches I read makes it abundantly clear that it is the quality of community life that makes the greatest difference, attracts new members, and retains existing ones. If you will ask God daily to help Trinity Church be the kind of community of faith God wants you to be, you will live into that identity and the future of this parish, though radically different, will be better than ever before. The quality of community life here is good. However, in some ways Trinity is operating like a much smaller church with many decisions and activities that rest on one person. That needs to change and we hope the new organizational system will help accomplish the changes that will help Trinity function in line with the size parish we actually are. Not to do so will lead to declining participation and membership and nobody wants that.

• Continue in the Breaking of Bread and in the Prayers ~ Share in corporate worship. Sunday attendance is pretty good at Trinity. But there are too many empty pews at most services. The many distractions are tempting. But, as Jesus told Martha and Mary of Bethany, “One thing is necessary.” I challenge each

Page 15: 2010 Annual Meeting Booklet

2010 Annual Meeting January 17, 2010

14

member to make a new commitment to regular participation in worship. If you attend once a month, you can attend twice. If you attend twice, you can attend three times. If you attend three times, why not try for four? As a member of the Episcopal Church, you are a season ticket holder! And there’s more. I challenge each of you to invite one person to join you in worship at Trinity during 2010. Did you know that most people become members of a church because someone they know first invited them? Surely you know someone who is not active in a church in Lawrence who would be receptive to an invitation to worship with you at Trinity one Sunday out of the year. If you can’t invite them to worship, how about inviting them to some other function in this parish?

• Resist Evil, Seek and Serve Christ, & Strive for Justice, and Peace ~ One of my most significant discoveries at Trinity is the remarkable level of outreach. It is one of Trinity’s best-kept secrets. Last year, through a variety of efforts, approximately $120,000 was spent on others, approximately 20% of the total amount we spent for all things. Almost half of that amount was not reported because it simply went through pass through accounts in our financial system. The vestry and I have included the projected income and investments in outreach in the 2010 budget so the level of outreach will be more transparent and, therefore, obvious. That financial support is coupled with an extraordinary number of persons who are rolling up their sleeves and working on behalf of our neighbors in need. This is something to celebrate and to build upon. Don’t keep it a secret.

• Proclaim the Good News by Word and Example ~ Grow generous givers. Our stewardship efforts in preparation for 2010 reflected an increase in the amount pledged. However, the giving level in this parish has room to grow. We ended the year 2009 with a balanced budget but it was too close for comfort. In 2010, we have projected a balanced budget. That budget is based on a great deal of trust in those who have made pledges of financial support. It is also based on confidence that there will be growth in stewardship throughout the year. The tradition of 80% of the membership expecting 20% to bear a disproportionate share of the responsibility for the financial stability of the parish is a tradition that needs to be replaced by a more balanced and equitable approach. I suggest to you that the biblical principle of the tithe is the most obvious, simple, and reliable way to achieve this balance and I urge every member of this parish to take the necessary steps that will lead to tithing.

• Respect the Dignity of Every Human Being ~ There are many, many hearts and hands that have touched me, encouraged me, supported me, and with whom I am privileged to share in the building up of the Church for the work of ministry. I give thanks to God for Bishop Wolfe and the diocesan staff, Canons Siegmund and Loya, the community of Priests and Deacons of this diocese and this parish, the devoted Wardens and Vestry, our fine staff, a host of people who contribute to our worship, faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in all levels of parish life, hoards of people engaged in meaningful outreach, and numerous neighbors here in Lawrence make this parish a very blessed place for me. You will remain in my prayers and in my heart for ever. I am confident that your next rector will encounter the same!

• Finally ~ As we continue the journey together through transition, my prayer for you is that you will embrace the changes that are coming with confidence, conscious that you are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses who cheer you on, and that you will lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely that it can hold you back, and run with perseverance the race that is set before you, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

Faithfully yours, Ronald D. Pogue Interim Pastor

CURATE’S REPORT: THE REV. PAUL K. MCLAIN III It is a blessing to lead and serve here in the fellowship of Trinity. 2009 was an exciting year with The Very Reverend Jonathon Jensen’s call as Dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the call of The Reverend Ron Pogue as our Interim Pastor. It was a year of leading and learning in a time of transition. I am grateful to you, the congregation of Trinity, and to the Deacons, affiliated clergy, and staff for your prayers and support during the time between Father Jensen’s departure in June and Father Pogue’s arrival in August. It was a busy summer with a number of weddings and funerals, and I am very thankful for your help and your encouragement. 2009 began for me with a pilgrimage to the Holy Land through a scholarship I was awarded to participate in the Palestine of Jesus course offered by St. George’s College in Jerusalem. It was wonderful to feel your prayers and to share this journey with you through email updates. Upon returning, I led programs on this pilgrimage at an adult and a children’s forum at Trinity, as well as one for the students at Bishop Seabury Academy. One of the highlights of 2009 was the opportunity to teach my first confirmation class in the spring. Over twelve weeks, eight candidates for confirmation met with me and others from the congregation who desired to deepen their faith journey and their understanding of what it means to be a Christian and an Episcopalian. We explored the Book of Common Prayer, the Episcopal Church’s New Teaching Series, and Trinity’s history and architecture. It was a delight to assist Bishop Dean Wolfe on June 7th as he offered the Rite of Confirmation to Jay Childers, Ted and Nancy Haggart, Brian Jones, Emily Martin, Joshua Milota, Jenine Meston and Dan Ward. Another highlight of 2009 was the designation of the Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry as a Jubilee Ministry Center by the Episcopal Church during the Diocese of Kansas Convention in October. It was a pleasure to work with Barry Molineux, lay ministry coordinator for the Food Pantry, on the successful application to achieve this designation. During the year, I also worked with Barry to begin a relationship between the Food Pantry and the Episcopal Canterbury House ministry of the University of Kansas, resulting in the participation of a number of student ministers in bringing food to those in need here in Lawrence and Douglas County. I was invited to lead worship at the Canterbury House at KU and to lead a discussion on faith and war at the Canterbury House at Kansas State. It is important that we continue to build Trinity’s relationship with these vibrant campus ministry groups. With economics dominating the news for much of late 2008 and 2009, the relationship of faith and economics has been of great interest. I was blessed to be awarded a scholarship to attend a continuing education program on faith and economics sponsored by the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty in Grand Rapids, Michigan during June. I also attended a workshop led by Dave Ramsey, who is pioneering a ministry in faith and personal finances. I shared that which I learned in a session with adults at Vacation Bible School in the summer and in a 3-week adult forum series at Trinity this fall. More about our joint Vacation Bible School with St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church will be shared in the Children’s Education section of this annual report. During 2009, we invited representatives of the Family Promise ministry in Lawrence to present an Adult Forum program on the work to alleviate homelessness for children and families in Douglas County. As a result of this time together, Katie Becker agreed to be our point person as we work to become a support congregation in partnership with St. Margaret’s and the KU Canterbury House. It

16

was exciting to see that Family Promise was designated as one of the recipients of Trinity’s Christmas offering, along with the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity Building on Faith home, for which Trinity is a covenant partner. On December 5th, it was great to be alongside our Trinity lay ministers for the “raising of the walls” for this home. We also worked to build a stronger relationship with the Lawrence Journal-World during 2009. I wrote columns for the newspaper’s “Faith Forum” section and the Journal-World featured our Pump ‘N Pray ministry, Father Jensen’s service and departure, the Food Pantry, and the Solemn High Mass in major articles during the year. The Pump ‘N Pray story led to an article in the international publication Episcopal Life and the Solemn High Mass story was cited as an example of innovative ministry by the Episcopal Bishop of Arizona. This attention expanded our presence in the community and nation, and resulted in new members of Trinity. I believe God has more blessings and opportunities in store for Trinity in 2010. May we listen and be faithful to God’s call. Blessings, Father Paul+

DEACONS’ REPORT

Deacons are ordained and assigned to the parish by the Bishop. We work under the supervision of the Rector, and cooperate with the other clergy in the parish to assist them in their roles. We also report to the Archdeacon and the Bishop of the Diocese. We perform the liturgical roles of the Deacon in the Sunday morning services and at the monthly service at Brandon Woods. We also serve at special services such as Christmas, Epiphany, the Holy Week services, and at funerals. We also preach several times each year, and anoint anyone who desires it for healing.

We visit the sick and shut-ins of this parish in the hospital, nursing homes and their own homes and take communion to them. We also lead the Pastoral Care Team and the Eucharistic Visitors, and train the Lectors, Intercessors, and Eucharistic Ministers (Chalice Bearers).

We try to support others in their ministries. We attended the weekly staff meetings, the Deacons’ Retreat, and several special meetings of our church committees. We participate in continuing education each year and read Holy Scripture, material related to the diaconate, the church, and theology. This year Dick and Rita took a five session course in dealing with the mentally ill from Bert Nash.

Dick and Rita assisted with the Vacation Bible School again this year and performed their puppet show for each session. Dick helps plan the Adult Forum, introduces guests, makes presentations, and leads discussions. Rita is a resource person to people needing advice relating to church activities. She also is a resource to people who need referrals to community agencies for various kinds of assistance. Dick and Rita are active in the Brandon Woods worship service each month. We are grateful to Marilyn Dowell for serving as the Altar Guild person and to Judy Heller and Diana Dyal for serving as musicians for that service each month.

Steve has been engaged with being the Chair person of the Higher Education Committee which is the committee that oversees Campus Ministry on 14 different campuses within the Diocese as well as oversees the Grant awarded to parishes for campus ministry. At Trinity church Steve helped initiate two men’s groups: Pump ‘n Pray and Holy Stir-It. Steve also was involved with developing a stewardship program at Trinity called G.I.F.T. or Grocery Income For Trinity program.

We use our Deacon’s Discretionary Funds primarily to assist people in need. The most common requests are for assistance with utilities and rent. Deacon Dick B. Tracy Deacon Rita V. Tracy Deacon Steve Segebrecht

REPORT OF RECTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE SEARCH/PROFILE COMMITTEE REPORT Since the completion of the two Parish Surveys last Fall, the Profile Committee with help from the Search Committee has moved forward to complete the Trinity Profile for prospective Rectors. Jennifer Sanner has done a masterful job of putting it all together with great help from the other members. We expect to have the Profile ready for the Bishop to see within a few days after the Annual Meeting. After that, the profile will be listed on our web site and the Search Committee will begin its work. With help from the Diocese, we will have access to many prospects. We will need help from all Trinity members. If you know of a potential rector who might be interested and is qualified, please give that person’s name and address to a member of the Search Committee.

SENIOR WARDEN’S REPORT My initial year as senior warden has been a bit more educational and challenging than I had expected. However, it has been a very positive year in almost every way. I have agreed to continue this position for another year in an attempt to complete many of the endeavors set in motion during this busy time. In the spring, we all celebrated with Jonathon when he was called to be the dean of the cathedral in Little Rock, Arkansas. We also dealt with our own sense of loss resulting from his decision to leave Trinity. But we got to work; with assistance from Bishop Wolfe and from the past and present Canons to the Ordinary, we formed profile and search committees, who are doing a remarkable job of preparing for the process of calling a new rector. I have every confidence that, when I write my report a year from now, we will once again have a permanent rector serving Trinity.

One of the most important accomplishments of the year for me and for all of the vestry, was calling Father Pogue as our interim rector. I feel so blessed to have Ron’s guidance, leadership and support. His desire to do everything possible to make Trinity ready for the calling of a new rector will be invaluable during the search process and beyond. It has been a real pleasure to get to know Ron and Gay and to have them as members of our church family.

I want to thank everyone who is working so willingly and enthusiastically to make this sometimes arduous task manageable. Father Paul has smoothed the way and has made it possible for us to move seamlessly through the early search process. Additionally, I am thankful for all of the vestry members who continue to work overtime with diligence and good humor, no matter how late the hour when our meetings end.

Finally, I want to acknowledge and thank all of our members who have continued with the ongoing, important work of Trinity. We continue to have the most beautiful music at our services, even when there is a blizzard! The Solemn High Mass is thriving. We had a very successful stewardship campaign. The food pantry continues to provide food for those In need. The Environmental Stewardship Team is working hard to make this a greener place. Ploughman’s Lunch was once again a successful event, providing outreach to a number of organizations. And there is so much more. Thanks to all of you.

It has been a pleasure to serve you as senior warden, and with God’s help, together we will have much success in the new year.

Faithfully yours,

Ellen Tracy

JUNIOR WARDEN’S REPORT The year 2009 provided a moderate number of challenges, with the usual number of problems with the plumbing, electrical, and sound systems. Progress was made in several other areas, including the following:

Spring clean-up interior work included cleaning the Parish Hall seat cushions; window washing and wood refinishing were done for the Nave pews and woodwork. Exterior work included major tree and shrub trimming and general garden clean up and application of mulch. The City of Lawrence trimmed the Pin Oaks on 10th street. The railing at the front church steps and on Vermont street were painted. Many parish members participated including the Hare, Flessing, McLain and Reese families, as well as John Emerson, Tod Sutton, Bill McGillivray, Christine Arnold, Don Roehl, and Greg Hazen.

Energy savings under the direction of David Owen included installation of efficient lights and electronic ballasts. Occupancy light switches and timer controlled exhaust fans were installed in restrooms. “Turn off the light” switch plates designed by Craig Myers were installed. The cost of the work was paid for with the generous contribution of $2,000 to the TEST Committee by the Shirer family. Special thanks to David Owen whose persistence resulted in a more than $4,000 rebate from Westar. Garth Burns assisted David with the lighting project as well as the high altitude work in the Nave along with Austin C. Turney. The very high lights in the sanctuary were installed by Greg Hazen and Tod Sutton.

Henry Heller Smith and members of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity repainted the parking lot lines. Don Wardes continued his many years of cleaning up the grounds and doing chores in the church, including opening the church nearly every Sunday morning.

In summary, with the support extended by everyone from Fr. Jensen and Fr. Pogue, to Ruthie Townsend, to Parish members both named and unnamed, my job as your Junior Warden in 2009 was both a pleasure and, I believe, a success. Thank you for the opportunity.

PARISH REPORTS

ACOLYTES The acolyte program has grown steadily over the last three years. When Rachel Buerman and I took on the acolyte program there were two acolytes. In the past year we have had eight young people serving regularly. I want to thank not only these young people, but also all of the people who have expressed their appreciation and support for the work of these faithful young people. I must also express thanks to the parents of the acolytes for their support. It is with regret that I must report that Rachel, because of her unpredictable work schedule, has stepped down from active participation in the acolyte program. Many thanks to Rachel for her help over the past years. I expect that we will continue to expand the acolyte program in the next year.

ADULT FORUM The Adult Forum is a part of Trinity’s

adult education program. It meets every Sunday morning from 9:30 to 10:10 a.m. in the downstairs Jackson Kemper Room. During the past year, the Forum has offered a variety of live programs, video presentations, and discussions on a wide range of topics. Our presenters include community experts, people from the diocese, and our own laypeople and clergy.

ALTAR FLOWER COMMITTEE The committee arranged two vases of flowers for the altar every Sunday, except for the seasons of Lent. During Advent we arrange the Advent wreath and during Christmas season we decorate the entire church. At Palm Sunday and Easter we are responsible for providing palms and flowers for the children and the nave. In addition we arranged flowers for funerals during the year. We are happy to do flowers for special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, or weddings. We ask that the requests for these special occasions come to us with at least a week to spare and that the folks requesting the flowers pay in advance. We buy the fresh flowers weekly from various sources: grocery stores, florists, Farmer’s Markets, and we use flowers from our own gardens or friends’ gardens. We use vases or containers that are in the Flower Room and make sure that they are in good condition and clean. For people requesting flowers for the Sunday services, there is a sign up board, Altar Flower Calendar, in the Parish Hall. Please put your name on the appropriate date, and fill out a form and take the form and money to the office. A minimum donation of $35 is greatly appreciated. We have plenty of room for flowers on the altar, so if you wish to choose a Sunday and someone else has chosen that day, if both parties are agreeable we can accommodate both requests. We are happy to celebrate the many gifts of the Lord with one of the greatest gifts of all: flowers.

ALTAR GUILD Members of the Altar Guild are called to

a very special ministry: to prepare for the meeting of the people with God. At present, the guild has thirty members divided into three teams. Each team serves every three months for one month. We take care of the Eucharistic Vessels and Linens, making sure that the Altar is ready for the Priest at every celebration of the Eucharist. In addition, we prepare for weddings, baptisms, funerals and other prayer book services as needed.

Our team captains this past year were Melinda McKnight, Joan Ring, and Carl Edwards. Members of the teams were Sue Shackelford, Jennifer Sanner, Gail Griffin, Barbara Haverty, Karen Keim, Gail Van Loenen, Sara Woods, Charlotte Mueller, Marty Smith, Mary Emerson, Shirley Reese, Nora Clark, Cheryl Flessing, Lynn Segebrecht, Carol Hatton, Winnie Getto, Ginny Johnston, Margaret Bearse, Katie Lord, Katherine McGillivray, Nancy Haggart and Patty Johnson.

Our thanks go to each of our members who contribute so much of themselves to this ministry. Should you have an interest in becoming a member of the Altar Guild, please contact one of the Co-Directors. We always welcome new members.

BRANDON WOODS EUCHARIST

We continue to offer a monthly service of Holy Communion at the Brandon Woods retirement community on the second Thursday of each month at 10:00am. It has been well receive by all. We have had from 24-28 people each time many of whom are unable to attend worship at Trinity. We have been intentional to make the service as much like "church" as possible with vestments, candles, flowers, a large print bulletin and proper, silver Eucharistic vessels and homily. An anointing with oil and laying on of hands for healing is

part of the experience. Judy Heller and Diana Dyal have provided music for us and the activities director of Brandon Woods provides the space and refreshments. Marilyn Dowell graciously serves as the Altar Guild. Thank you to Deacons Dick and Rita Tracy and the Rev. Paul McLain who make this possible. All are welcome.

Fr. Pogue CHORISTERS

Singing once a month, the Trinity Choristers continue to be an integral part of the 10:30 a.m. service. There are currently fourteen active choristers who rehearse once a week on Thursdays from 6:15-7:00 p.m. in the upstairs choir room. Elizabeth Stephens and Mark Stotler have been their accompanists. The choristers include Jesse Cox, MacKensie Reber, Abby and Caroline Padgett, Alana and Miles Branch, Sarah Krambeer, Arianna Myers-Arenth, Bekah Keys, Atlee Myers, Mia and Mateo Wills, Helen Weis, and Anna Patterson. In addition to singing nine communion anthems during the school year, the Trinity choristers sang the solos for the Christmas Pageant in 2009. They enjoyed a pizza party in May and a caroling/pizza party in December. Rehearsals resume January 7. New choristers are always welcome. A chorister should be at least eight years old, have good reading skills, and be able to match pitch. Please contact Susan Ralston at 843-3920 or [email protected].

CHILDREN’S EDUCATION

Vacation Bible School One of the most exciting developments

in children’s education during 2009 was a joint Vacation Bible School (VBS) that Trinity co-sponsored with St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in June. It gave an opportunity for children and adults from the two churches to get to know each other better. The VBS offered a wide range of sessions for learning opportunities and fun for all ages. It closed Friday night with a celebration picnic at Trinity. Nursery and Early Christian Awareness Trinity’s nursery is available for infants to 3 years. Jack Sanner, with 5 years experience, is our main caregiver in the nursery. He is ably assisted by Natalie Wilkins, who has 4 years experience. The Early Christian Awareness (ECA) program is offered in the nursery during the 10:30am worship service. Our ECA teachers use sensory exploration, along with storytelling and songs to demonstrate God’s love for the smallest children. ECA was led by a rotation of talented teachers in 2009 including Lynn Segebrecht, Micah Seybold, and Wendy Burkett. Kids Sunday Adventures

Kids Sunday Adventures (KSA) is Trinity’s preschool class. These children hear and learn some of the best-loved Bible stories. Margaret Bearse serves as lead teacher for this class. During 2009, she was assisted by Sue Shackelford, Kirsty Elliott, Kristin Flor, Nora Clark, Karin Denes-Collar, and Allison Myers-Arenth. Godly Play Plus

Godly Play Plus is Trinity’s class for Kindergarten to 2nd Graders. Melanie Hepburn and Anne Patterson lead the class. It is a modified version of Godly Play which generally follows the Episcopal Lectionary each week. Children receive a good introduction to Episcopal worship, hear stories from the Bible, and participate in a wealth of creative arts and crafts.

Additional Children’s Activities and Programs In addition to Sunday School each week,

the children and their families had the opportunity to participate in other activities at Trinity in 2009. These included the Flowering of the Cross and the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday, the release of ladybugs and wearing festive balloon hats on Pentecost, the blessing of the animals on St. Francis Day, a visit from St. Nicholas in December, and the annual Christmas Pageant.

CHRISTIAN CLASSICS

The Christian Classics group has been a part of the adult education program at Trinity Episcopal Church for over fifteen years. Originally known as the "History Group", Christian Classics meets every other Wednesday evening to read and discuss important texts on religion and spirituality.

The group has read works by such authors as St. Augustine, St. Benedict, Gregory the Great, Dante Alighieri, Julian of Norwich, Erasmus, Thomas More, John Donne and Jonathan Swift.

In 2009, Christian Classics continued with C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters. The Cloud of Unknowing by an anonymous medieval writer was our next venture. We concluded the year with Pascal's Pensees and Provincial Letters.

The group welcomes anyone interested in exploring the development of religious thought and practice and in joining us for fellowship and spiritual growth. For more information, please contact Joan or Rich Ring (842-5544)

CHRISTMAS GIVING

Thanks to Vera King for organizing Trinity's Christmas Giving Trees this year. Once again we provided Christmas presents for 50 foster children of Douglas County through the KVC Behavioral Healthcare Agency. Many thanks to all of you who contributed so that we were once again able to make this a Merry Christmas for others. We are grateful for all that you do. EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY

The EFM Program at Trinity actively continues in the fall of 2009 with 6 enrollees from Trinity and St Margaret’s representing all four years of the program having graduated one enrollee from St Paul’s, Leavenworth in May. The group currently meets on Tuesday evenings. Tod and Sidney Sutton mentor this group. If you are interested in this program, contact Tod or Sidney Sutton

EFM is a four-year program administered through the School of Theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, TN. Over 70,000 persons have participated in the program, and in the United States more than 22,000 have completed the full four years. More than eighty dioceses of the Episcopal Church as well as other denominations have contractual arrangements work with the program which also serves an international ministries. The course of study leads the student through the Hebrew Scriptures of the Old Testament, the New Testament, 2000 years of church history, and the development of theological concepts, thoughts and ideas. Enrollment is open to all persons willing to commit one year at a time to this upper level study program. The program is primarily structured toward educating and guiding the laity along paths to their individual ministries. For those interested in more advanced seminary and deaconate training, EFM is a solid steppingstone along that path. The cost of the program is $340 per year (sponsorship from the diocese helps keep the tuition down). Additional financial aid may be available through other sources. The next

enrollment period will be this summer for the fall of 2010. We would be happy to talk to anyone interested in this program and there will be openings available. Further information is also available at http://www.sewanee.edu/EFM/index.htm Tod and Sidney Sutton (838-4573), Co-mentors ENDOWMENT BOARD

The last two years have been difficult for the Endowment Board because of our economy. Our financials started at our lowest level in many years but because of a bull market during the year, we were able to gain back some of our losses. As of Dec 1, 2009, our investments totaled $190,000. This is still below our highest level of $250,000. We expect 2010 to continue this upward trend and, if so, we should have our totals well over $200,000 by the end of 2010.

Because of our financial situation, the committee voted not to make any gifts in 2009. This is not want we wanted, but our position dictated to us a need to be cautious and conservative.

The big news is our move to make the Endowment Board work more closely with the Vestry. We initiated, voted on and passed some major changes to the Endowment’s By-laws. First, the Endowment Board will be required to make a full report quarterly to the Vestry. Next, limiting our gifts to no more than 50% of earnings and, if the need calls for more than 50%, it must have Vestry approval. A new paragraph was added stating that all donations given to the Endowment for a specific purpose will be honored. Finally, all gifts given must have Vestry approval. There are other minor changes but the above are the major ones. These amendments were presented to the Vestry at their December meeting and were approved unanimously. These amendments now must be voted on by those present at the Annual Meeting before they can be a permanent part of the Endowment By-laws.

EUCHARISTIC VISITORS AND PASTORAL CARE TEAM

The Eucharistic Visitors are laypersons licensed by the bishop. They work with the deacons to take communion from our Sunday services to parishioners who cannot attend church on a long-term basis.

The Pastoral Care Team also consists of laypersons who extend pastoral care by making additional visits to shut-ins and retirement home residents who are our parishioners. Our ministry helps parishioners remain connected with our church congregation. The Eucharistic Visitors and the Pastoral Care Team also meet with the deacons about once per month to pray and discuss our ministry.

Deacons Dick and Rita Tracy G.I.F.T. PROGRAM

The G.I.F.T. (Grocery Income For Trinity) program helps the mission of the church!!! Each Sunday you can be a part of the G.I.F.T. program, where for every dollar you spend on groceries, six percent will be returned to Trinity. If, for example, you spend $100 a week at your favorite grocery store - $5,200 per year – your purchases will result in $312 for the church. Here are some G.I.F.T. specifics: • G.I.F.T. team members will be selling grocery

store cards in values of $50 and $100; • Participating stores include Checker’s

(certificates), Dillons, HyVee and The Merc; • Instead of cards, Checker’s will be offering

gift certificates in $10 units and will give change back for any unused portion of the certificate;

• Cards can be used for both groceries and gas at Dillons and HyVee;

• Card values are dollar for dollar, the six percent return is paid by the participating store(s);

• Cards are designated by store and cannot be exchanged/used at other participating grocers;

• Stores will automatically track card deductions.

• The ONLY times to purchase cards are after the 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services.

Purchases can NOT be made at the church office during the week. G.I.F.T. is designed to make your grocery shopping a way of giving and ultimately more rewarding. And if you decide to participate there’s something uniquely fulfilling in it for you. Look for the sales table in the parish hall this Sunday and be a part of G.I.F.T.!!! Bob Sanner GREETERS

The Greeter/Newcomer committee has had a busy year. We are the first person you see as you arrive at church. We are not there to hand out a bulletin; rather to welcome you with a friendly handshake or hug. Also we are there to meet the new visitors and give a warm introduction to them. We invite them to coffee after church and try to answer any questions they may have. Any new person that signs a card at church is called the next day by Father McLain and one of the greeters. We will be handing out information with a small gift in the coming year which will be delivered to that new individual. We had two social meetings this year – and hope to do more in the coming year. Those greeting this past year include: Ruthie McLain, Susan Morris, Dave and Gail Griffin, John and Shirley Reese, Bill and Katherine McGillivray, Ted and Nancy Haggart, Susan and Brad Tate, Dave and Ellyn Owen, Terry and Ellen Tracy, Don and Barbara Roehl, Bruce and Harlanne Roberts, Jerry and Liz Hare, Andy and Debbie Pitts, Joanne Feist, Marty Smith, Kent and Carol Tomlinson, Sandra Wiechert, Linda McCoy, Mo Godman and Dick Eversole, Dave and Lori Edington. Katie and Charlie Becker will be added to the group for 2010. If you would like to volunteer for this group, please let us know.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY 2009 was a year of challenges and changes for the Lawrence chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The economic recession made contributions less and more difficult to obtain. Jeremy Hahn is no longer Executive Director with no replacement at this time. The board of directors under the leadership of Marilyn Harp has assumed many of his responsibilities. Lori Harse remains Director of Operations; Mark Brooks continues as construction manager. The ReStore has a new manager, Michele Johnson. The ReStore has moved from Comet Lane to 708 Connecticut. Keith Schoen recently joined the Habitat team through a year long AmeriCorps appointment. His duties include establishing covenant church relationships, applying for grants and using the volunteer database more effectively. The chapter has 2 new homes eing built locally. The Mendosa family home is making good progress with assistance provided in July from bikers traveling with Bike and Build; a national organization that takes teams across the country to volunteer with organizations providing affordable housing. 32 bikers were here 2 days working on the Mendosa home after riding 1,783 miles. A nail driving ceremony was held in December for the family of Trish Powell. Normally, it takes 3-4 months to build a home; weather permitting so if all goes well the Mendosa family will move in by March and the Powell family will move in sometime in the spring. The Powell home will be the 72nd one to be completed by the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity. The Women’s Build committee has joined the Faith Relations committee; with money raised by both to go toward the completion of the Powell house. The Trinity Environmental Team (TEST) continues to raise money to provide energy efficient fluorescent bulbs to all newly dedicated homes. The Revs. Ron Pogue and Paul McLain have been extremely supportive of Habitat’s goal to continue to help low income families achieve the dream of home ownership.

Thanks to all Trinitarians for your prayers, financial support and volunteerism. Susan Morris Faith Build Committee Church Liaison

KITCHEN GUILD

Where do we spend more time than in the Nave? We meet, greet and eat in the environs of the parish hall/kitchen area. Enabling us to do all that requires many helping hands. The volunteers who make coffee, bake, serve and clean-up are providing hospitality to Trinitarians and visitors.

Two special events such as the Art Show and Ploughman’s Lunch requires many hours to prepare and serve as we welcome the community into our “house.”

The Sunday Morning Coffee Hour is a wonderful time to greet each other and serves as a warm welcome to newcomers and visitors.

For those who haven’t helped with this mission, please consider giving your time or talent. If you can’t bake, make, or serve – think about clean-up. The TEST group is very helpful on the third Sunday of every month at the 10:30 service. However, your help would be appreciated other Sundays.

Also we have laundry that is done by those working in the kitchen…another opportunity for a volunteer.

Many thanks to all who helped this past year…and have already signed up to do so again this year.

Thanks to Cheryl Flessing and Barb Roehl who clean the kitchen each week.

A special thanks goes to Fifi Paden who is a guiding force for all of our special events.

This is an invitation to all to contribute in the hospitality for 2010.

LECTORS, INTERCESSORS AND CHALICE BEARERS Chalice Bearers, Lectors and Intercessors are an integral part of the church services at Trinity Church. There is always a need for laymen to participate and it is a good way to support the clergy and parishioners of our church. People who serve in these capacities find that not only do you contribute to the church with your time and talent, but many find that it strengthens their own faith. The Lectors read the Old Testament and New Testament lessons and lead the Psalms. The Intercessors bring the concerns of the congregation and the church before God in the Prayers of the People. Chalice Bearers distribute the consecrated wine and assist the priest and deacons at the altar. We are always interested in training new people for these important ministries. Please contact me or Deacon Dick Tracy or Deacon Rita Tracy to discuss how you may participate.

Marty Smith L.I.N.K.

Trinitarians continue to respond when it is Trinity's turn to serve at the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen (L.I.N.K.).

On the 3rd Tuesday of every other month, we take our turn and provide a nutritious meal for the hungry and lonely in our community.

LINK began on Valentine's Day, 1985, and is now serving over 170 guests each serving day. Clientele includes a great many elderly people and many families with small children. For some, this noon meal is their only good meal of the day, thus it is vitally important to them. Volunteers are needed on many levels, including people to provide the food (casseroles, milk, bread, vegetables and apples), people to serve and people to help clean up after lunch.

If you have an interest in helping with this ministry, please contact me. I would be happy to put you on our list of volunteers.

We serve at LINK day after tomorrow, the 19th of January, 2010.

MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER

Thanks to those who read Morning Prayer: Eleanor Symons on Monday, Ruth Turney on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Morning Prayer is at 9:00 A.M. in the Chapel on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. MUSIC REPORT

The Music program at Trinity Episcopal Church has completed a successful year, with special music prepared by both Trinity Choir which sings at the 10:30 AM Service and Trinity Consort which sings for the Sunday evening Solemn High Mass.

We wish to thank Elizabeth Stephens for her outstanding and faithful leadership as organist at the 10:30 AM Service. Elizabeth has been organist since 1971 and now is starting her 39th year at Trinity Episcopal Church. Elizabeth received her Bachelor's Degree in Organ Performance from the University of North Texas, Master's degree in Organ Performance at University of Kansas, where she was a teaching assistant in organ. She also had additional studies at the Juilliard School of Music, New York and private study with Virgil Fox.

Mark Stotler has been organist at Trinity Episcopal Church since 2006, and plays regularly for the 6:00 PM Solemn High Mass as well as some Sundays mornings during the year. A native of West Virginia, Mark completed an undergraduate degree in Organ Performance at Hood College, Frederick, MD, and a Master's degree in Pastoral Counseling at

Loyola College, Baltimore, MD. Presently Mark is a graduate student at the University of Kansas in Organ Performance. Mark has been a professional organist for more than 20 years, he has served in Catholic and Episcopal parishes. Thank you Mark, for your commitment and leadership as organist at Trinity.

Mr. Smith has introduced A Ceremony of Carols - Benjamin Britten to Trinity - four part arrangement. On Sunday, December 13, 2009, he conducted the full Nine Lessons and Carols at a special Service which was met with great success. This year Trinity Choir added to its repertoire of more chant settings and have met with more positive responses. A setting of Jackson Hill's Service music titled Corpus Christi Mass has been added to the music of Mathias, Willan, Powel, Hurd, Douglas and Merbecke.

During the Festival of Lessons and Carols, Trinity Bell Choir played an arrangement of Infant Holy, and will continue this tradition for major events. Everyone is welcome to join the great choir which sings weekly anthems for the 10:30 AM Service as well as special music for Easter and Christmas Eve.

The fine music program at Trinity Episcopal Church depends primarily on the financial support for its continued success. We do hope that a future endowment to solely support the music ministry at Trinity will become a reality. Please speak to Father Pogue, Ellen Tracy or Henry Heller Smith if you wish to consider making a gift toward this goal at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Mr. Smith wishes to thank all members of the choirs for their dedication and wonderful singing this year, especially during our Christmas Eve Service with the seasons blizzard for 2009. He hopes to continue the great tradition by bringing the best music to Trinity. It is great to know that Trinity choirs are alive and well! Once again, new members from the congregation are welcome and encouraged to join Trinity choir.

Henry Heller Smith Music Director

NORTHEAST CONVOCATION

Trinity belongs to the Northeast Convocation which is one of the four geographical areas within the Diocese of Kansas.

Delegates and alternates to the Convocation are elected by the parish at its annual meeting for three year terms. Our delegates for 2009 were Onva Boshears, Katherine McGillivray and Austin Turney. The alternate was Ruth Turney.

The convocation meets on a Saturday morning four or five times each year. The meeting place varies depending on parish invitations.

The individual parishes report their forthcoming activities and events. For example we reported and advocated our environmental workshop at the preceding Convocation meeting. Events and activities within the entire diocese, including the acts of the diocesan trustees are reported. This year the principal events reported were the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the diocese and of certain parishes.

A meeting in September is largely devoted to the actions to be taken at the annual diocesan convention in October. The delegates to the Convocations are the lay persons voting at the convention along with the priests and deacons.

This year the convention heartily welcomed Presiding Bishop Schori. There were no resolutions to be debated, the budget and apportionment was passed without debate as were the various elections. The controversies that have made news in the larger church passed our diocese by.

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS Special thanks to our regular office

volunteers: during 2008: Shirley Reese, Ellen Tracy, Barbara Roehl, Marian Wilbur, Mary Mozingo, Onva Boshears, Polly Spencer, Susan Morris, Sally Shriner, Margaret Bearse and Patty Johnson. Thanks to Don Roehl for helping count the money with Liz and/or Shirley each week. Don and Barbara Roehl are often here beyond their normal volunteer hours helping in any way needed.

It is a pleasure to have all of you in the office and we look forward to the days you are here. Our task is made lighter because of you. Heartfelt thanks as well to those who come to help with the mailing of the newsletter. You are delightful, wonderful people who have our admiration.

Ruthie Townsend PARISH LIBRARY

Trinity’s library is an important part of the church’s educational ministry to both children and adults.

On December 31, 2009 the library held 4.033 books, adult and juvenile, 370 compact discs, 9 magazine subscriptions and a video collection that is still available but not being added to.

Trinity’s is one of only a handful of parish libraries in this diocese. The diocese thus lags behind much of the rest of the Episcopal Church in this respect.

Our library has had good use made of its reference materials as well as of its light reading material in 2009. Adult circulation is good and depends on bringing the library to the people at the Sunday coffee hour in the parish hall. We do need to find a way to better serve the Sunday evening congregation.

We are constantly adding new materials on the beliefs, history, traditions and current happenings in the Episcopal Church as well as spiritual reading and fiction relating to the Church.

2010 will be a busy year in order to complete the job of shelf arrangement and labeling in the adult library and to finally arrange the library in the church school area.

In July my husband and I attended a three day conference of the Church and Synagogue Library Association in Canton, Ohio.. I was honored for attending 40 consecutive national annual conferences. In July 2010 we plan to attend the conference to be held in Houston, Texas. There I will present a workshop on “green” materials and we will organize a silent auction of publisher’s exhibits.

While in London in September 2009, we acquired library materials at the Church of England bookstore. A distinctive feature of our parish library is the number of books acquired in Britain that are not easy to come by in the U.S. Ruth A. Turney Parish Librarian PLOUGHMAN'S LUNCH

The Ploughman's Lunch and Fall Fest returned again this year on Saturday, November 7. This year around 200 people were served French onion soup, white chili, bread, cheese, and apple pie in the parish hall. We would like to thank many Trinitarians who not only contributed soup, baked goods, and vintage items but also contributed endless hours in preparation and serving. Anne Patterson and Linda McCoy spearheaded the Bake Sale; Harlanne Roberts and Orean Kent decorated the parish hall; Shirley Reese headed up the kitchen staff and Marty Smith organized the servers. We'd also like to thank the Pump and Pray group for helping to set up the tables and Ray Wilbur and Bill Woods for organizing the remaining setting up responsibilities as well as the clean up responsibilities.

Additional thank yous go to Jeannot Seymour and Pat Kehde for publicity and Katherine McGillvray and Gail Griffin for the phone tree. A $500 donation was given to C.A.S.A., Health Care Access, Lawrence Habitat for Humanity, and L.I.N.K., charities helping Douglas County. Trinity Treasures, headed by Charlotte Mueller and Gerry Miller, also had a successful sale as did the Vintage Sale

PRAYER CHAIN

The Parish Prayer Chain works toward being caring and functioning smoothly.

The 33 of us exist to support those in need of prayer. The individuals who give us the names of their loved ones to pray are the heart and soul of the PC.

This last 2009 autumn’s PC Get Together was hosted by Debbie Pitts. During these yearly meetings we socialize as well as work toward refining the Prayer Chain itself.

The PC is composed of 4 small groups. Members of each Chain pray daily according to their own prayer style for the people the Chains pray.

The Chains and their leaders are:

Hope – Ellen Owen Strength – Diana Dyal Peace – Christina Yehle Faith – Debbie Pitts

We pray daily for the sick, suffering and troubled; for those offering thanksgivings, petitions and intercessions; for deceased souls; and in support of our Parish clergy, staff, vestry, and Trinity Episcopal Church itself.

Anyone can add a name to the list of people the PC prays.

Anyone can become a member of the PC by a phone call or email to me.

The Prayer Chain and I are thankful for the support and ongoing help to us from Marian Wilber, Deacons Rita and Dick Tracy, the Parish Office Staff, Trinity’s former Rector Jonathon Jenson, and Reverend Ronald Pogue, our current Interim Pastor.

SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE

The Scholar in Residence is an annual event co-sponsored by KU’s Department of Religious Studies and a consortium of Lawrence churches. As Trinity’s representative to the planning committee, I worked to bring to Lawrence Dr. Peter Gomes, Chaplain of Harvard University for a three day stay in April.

The committee took a risk in paying for this nationally known preacher to give one of his presentations at the Lied Center. Financially we broke even but do not have any reserve for another year. The result is that the committee still exists but we have no plans for 2010. We may eventually create a different design for this venture.

TRINITY ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP TEAM (TEST)

2009 was a year in which our numbers swelled to seventeen. In addition to the many on-going projects (such as the kitchen recycling, clean-up after third Sunday coffee hour, the collection center), two major efforts were undertaken; the energy audit and the “green team” workshop.

The workshop was conducted in April to persons interested in starting “green teams” in other Episcopal churches in the diocese. The educational sub-committee of TEST is now planning its second workshop for April 10, 2010, with the same goal in mind. Last year’s workshop resulted in at least one more active “green team” in the diocese. Many parishes do “green” projects, but our ultimate goal is to have a “green team” in each church that will be leaders in environmental stewardship.

A self energy audit of both church buildings was completed and many of its recommendations have been accomplished; thanks to a grant from our Vestry. An electrician was hired to install motion detectors, timers, and ballasts for the new T8 energy

efficient fluorescents. Almost all bulbs in both buildings are now either CFLs or the new T8 energy efficient fluorescents. An artful “Turn Out the Lights” campaign (known as the “Angel Project”) was completed. The unused ceiling fan upstairs in the choir rehearsal room has been insulated. In addition, during discussions with Westar it was discovered we had been overcharged for some time on our electric bills. A rebate of $4,456 was the result. More is to be done in 2010 such as weather-stripping, new kitchen windows, door scrapers, etc. as money is available.

We started the year off helping with Vashti’s Epiphany Party in January. Shortly thereafter a programmable timer was donated and installed by TEST for the large coffee maker in the kitchen. It is intended to reduce our consumption of electricity.

In April, Trinity became an inaugural member of the newly formed Kansas Interfaith Power & Light. Two TEST members were selected to be on the KSIPL steering committee. Also in April, on Earth Day Sunday, TEST members gave a reading on lawn care.

In July, a collection center was donated and placed in the Parish Hall. It is now monitored by TEST and is intended for the collection and/or recycling of small dead batteries, old eye glasses, burned out CFLs, and old cell phones. This collection center was a suggestion by a parish member. We always welcome ideas for future projects.

October was a busy month. We contributed money (matched by diocesan funds) for member Patty Minx to attend an environmental workshop in North Carolina. It should be noted that Bishop Wolf has appointed Patty to be the non-parochial Deacon for the Environment for the diocese. TEST has been charged with being a mentor to Patty in this effort. Also in October, TEST gathered food for the Trinity Food Pantry in conjunction with the observance of International Climate Awareness Day (October 24th.) This was part of TEST’s participation in the “350.org” world-wide project to support efforts at the Copenhagen climate talks. A photo of our display was sent to the national 350.org organization and was added to many others

from around the world. About 50 signatures on postcards were gathered and sent to Washington encouraging President Obama to attend the Copenhagen talks. The National Council of Churches sanctioned this postcard project.

At the Diocesan Convention, TEST arranged to have a Kansas Interfaith Power & Light brochure, information on the 350.org project, and notice of TEST’s second “green team” workshop inserted in the information packet given out to each attendee at the Diocesan Convention. In addition, a “Brag Board” highlighting Trinity’s activities was produced to display at the Convention.

For three Sundays in December, TEST offered an Alternative Christmas Market to provide church members the opportunity to support specific charities by giving donations in a recipients name as Christmas gifts. Proceeds have gone to Heifer International, Episcopal Relief and Development, Comfort the Children, Lawrence Habitat for Humanity, and the Arbor Day Foundation.

Additional donations were made by TEST during the year to The Land Institute, Operation Wildlife, Lawrence Prairie Park Center, and the Kansas Riverkeeper. These donations would not have been possible without proceeds from the sales of Vashti Winterburg’s plum pudding project. Also, money was given to the Trinity Food Pantry to help with their purchase of a new freezer. In addition, TEST has an ongoing project to donate a case of CFLs to each new Habitat for Humanity house built in Lawrence.

Additionally, throughout the year, several articles about TEST activities were published in the nationally distributed EpEN (Episcopal Environmental Network) electronic newsletter. There were also several newsletter articles written by TEST members for our own Trinitarian.

Trips & Fun Things in 2010 In June, several members camped at Council Grove Lake and visited the Tallgrass National Prairie Preserve together. In September, some members attended the Prairie Festival near Salina. In October, several members gathered at the Owen Farm and walked the trails there.

The mission is to provide food to people who are hungry in Lawrence.

The food pantry served 6,811 people in 2009 with food purchased through gifts and donations of money and food. Donations of food have fed many who come to the food pantry on Tuesdays and Saturdays: - From the people of Trinity Episcopal Church with donations in the little red wagon, in the basket--from many who make weekly and monthly food donations. - From the people in our partner churches: First United Methodist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church. - From birthday parties, special food drives, Girl Scout Troops, friends, and private individuals and businesses; - From our participation as a participating pantry with Just Food and community-wide food drives:

Boy Scouts of America, Letter Carriers Food Drive, Late Night at the Phog, and others.

The mission has been blessed by support this year: - Gifts of more than $ 20,000 for the ongoing, weekly purchase of food; - Money to help purchase a much-needed freezer with a donation of $500.00 from Trinity Treasures, a gift of money in honor of Virginia Parsons who began our food pantry and funds donated by Trinity Environmental Stewardship Team; - A grant award in March from Douglas County Community Foundation for $3,287.00 which funded 18 per cent of food purchased in 2009; - The designation of TIFP in October as a Jubilee Center by The Episcopal Church in the US. - The development of an efficient means of checking expiration dates for all donated food; - Receiving funds from Just Food acquired through Lawrence Virtual Food Drive (http://vad.aidmatrix.org/vadxml.cfm?driveid=3481).

We gave food during 102 days this year: --purchased food valued at more than… $ 32,912.00 * *(January – November, 2009) --purchased food locally…………… $14,425.00. --food donated/purchased through ,,,$16,887.00 Just Food and Harvesters --bread donated………………….. $ 1,600.00

We thank many who have served in the food pantry, including:

• Students from Bishop Seabury Academy with food drives and help collecting, carrying, sorting, shelving food.

• Students from Canterbury House and the assistance of The Rev. Susan Terry for their help on the fifth Saturdays of the month.

We are grateful for the development of and our supportive relationship with the ECKAN Just Food Food Bank and Food Pantry at 1200 East 11th street which shares food with TIFP.

We thank Ruthie Townsend, Liz Hare, and all the people in the office who support the food pantry with its many and varied daily requests. We thank The Rev. Ron Pogue and The Rev. Paul McLain for their strong support and guidance. The faithful 27 servers with Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry continue this ministry into 2010 for people and families who need food in the coming months of cold weather and tough financial conditions with God’s continued provision and your continued help.

UNITED THANK OFFERING

In 2009 $437.68 was collected as Trinity’s share in the worldwide outreach of the ECW (Episcopal Church Women) through the United Thank Offering.

These offerings came through the UTO ingathering on a designated Sunday in May and from the Blue Boxes filled and offered during the year. The consolidated offering of over $7,000,000 for the entire church for the years 2006/8 was presented at the General Convention held in Anaheim, California in July.

The UTO is now in its second century of service to the church. Trinity’s contribution is one of the most generous in this Diocese. Ruth A. Turney

USHERS

Each week when you arrive at Trinity church you are presented with the bulletin for the week - and probably a smile and a handshake - from one of a group of people who provide an important service to our worship experience. The Ushers of Trinity are there before you arrive and stay after you have left! They are responsible for taking an accurate count of those worshipping and are also available to answer any questions or concerns. They welcome visitors to our parish and are instant responders for any emergency that might arise. Following each service the ushers make certain that all papers, etc., are picked up and the church is ready for the next event. Jerry Hanson, Senior Usher
