"The Commandant of the United States Coast Guard takes great pleasure in presenting the Coast Guard Meritorious Service Award to the Marine Exchange of Alaska for outstanding dedication and support to the Coast Guard while developing a robust and critical Automated Information System (AIS) infrastructure throughout key areas of Alaska. Since 2000, the Marine Exchange of Alaska has played a key and leading role for Maritime Domain Awareness throughout Alaska by adapting available, and in some cases leading edge, technology to provide critical maritime information to both commercial and government users at unprecedented levels. The Marine Exchange of Alaska's expertise helped streamline and enhance the execution of Coast Guard operations. Most notable is the real time vessel tracking that directly supported the high profile salvage of the car carrier COUGAR ACE and its cargo valued at $170 million, a potential four million gallon oil spill in Cook Inlet during the grounding of the crude oil tanker SEABULK PRIDE, the pollution threat from 335,000 gallons of fuel oil released from the grounding and breakup of the freight ship SELENDANG AYU, and the rescue of 282 persons from the stricken cruise ship EMPRESS OF THE NORTH.
