2011 OUTLOOK Manuel Diaz never intended to bring in seven players. The Georgia men’s tennis head coach expected a class of “about three or four” to replenish a depleted Bulldog lineup - a roster that was losing three of its six starters from the 2009-10 NCAA semifinal run. Instead, the 22-year veteran head coach wound up with seven newcomers headed to Athens for the fall of 2010, a group of three transfers and four freshmen that mark the largest incoming class in the history of the program. “We’ve never had this many before, it would have been impossible,” Diaz said back in the summer. “Sometimes we didn’t even have seven guys on the whole team. They’re really a great, eclectic group with some great stories.” The record class comes at a perfect time, as the Bulldogs lost seniors Jamie Hunt, Nate Schnugg, and Christian Vitulli – who played primarily at Nos. 2, 3, and 5 a season ago with 72 dual match victories between them in 2009-10. Back are rising seniors and co-captains Javier Garrapiz and Drake Bernstein – last season’s No. 1 and 4. “Undoubtedly we have more depth than we had last year, no question,” Diaz said. “These guys join our senior leaders in Javi and Drake who are great competitors with a ton of zeal and passion. These guys all love to work and we’re looking forward to this year and next.” The first two commitments Diaz inked for 2010-11 were formally announced on Nov. 19, 2009, in the thick of Georgia’s fall schedule. Diaz announced that day the addition of Garrett Brasseaux and Campbell Johnson – a pair of top-20 Juniors. After Brasseaux and Johnson were signed, Diaz said, he didn’t know where the rest of the recruiting year would take him, but knew it gave him a good starting point. “We’ve had holes in recruiting, and last year we didn’t have any sophomores on the team and lost our top freshman, so when some more options were opening up we continued to work hard.” On Dec. 12, Diaz announced the third member of the UGA Class of 2014 in his middle son, Eric. The younger Diaz this past May led Athens’ Monsignor Donovan High School to its first state championship while notching his fourth straight individual title with an undefeated 8-0 record. After Eric, No. 4 on the list came in a player that Diaz had initially recruited two years before. Texas A&M standout Wil Spencer, a native of Ponce de Leon, Fla., had considered Georgia out of high school but chose Texas A&M. When Spencer chose not to return to school for his junior year, Diaz showed up in his living room for the second time. Spencer then decided to take a year off, but headed to Athens in the fall to play out his two final years of eligibility as a Bulldog.Fast forward to the spring of 2010. “We heard about this boy at Auburn Montgomery,” Diaz said. AUM is an NAIA school with nine men’s tennis championships in the books. Thus began the quest to land France native Sadio Doumbia. “This is a kid that wanted to play DI tennis and was a 3.9 student at his previous school,” Diaz said. “He was a top-10 NAIA player.” Diaz and associate head coach Will Glenn went to AUM to watch Doumbia play. Impressed with both his skill level and his work ethic, the pair met with him after a team practice and noticed his hunger. “When Sadio got into town right off his flight from France, I met with him and the first thing he said to me was, ‘Coach, are we going to win it this year?’” Diaz said. “That’s what you want to hear.” The pair of Spencer and Doumbia two brought Diaz’s number to five. Surely that was it. As the 2010 regular season came to a close, Georgia lost its opening-round match to Auburn in the SEC Tournament. But when the team returned to Athens to host the NCAA Championships a record 26th time, things turned around in a hurry, as Georgia cruised through to an eventual place in the semifinals in front of the home crowd. After that, as summer got underway, Diaz heard from Ignacio Taboada, an Atlanta native who Diaz recruited out of high school. Ta-boada had played his first two seasons at Miami but was seeking a transfer and wanted to be closer to home. He, too, will enter as a junior with two years left to play. Since last December, Diaz said, the Georgia staff had been in touch with yet another young player in 17-year-old Hernus Pieters, a South African. This past spring, Pieters and his coach told Diaz that Pieters intended to finish high school early and come to Georgia. The question was simply when - if he would come this fall or wait until the spring of 2011. Diaz said things moved quickly with both Taboada and Pieters. Suddenly the number was seven. “This is such a diverse group,” the head coach said. “You have a kid from California, a kid from New Orleans. A local boy from Athens. Wil from Florida, coming from Texas A&M. Then Sadio from France and Hernus from South Africa, who is a 17-hour plane ride away from home.” “It’s just weird how it all happened,” Diaz went on. “Sometimes you recruit so hard and come up empty-handed, but this year it just happened. You have kids who want to come here and be a part of the history and tradition that Georgia has, that want to help us win.” “We’ve set a great foundation for the next four years - even though some of these guys will only be here for two. They will make an impact on Georgia Tennis for years down the road.” Joining Bernstein and Garrapiz, as well as returning sophomores Will Oliver and Will Reyolds, the new group of seven will be integral in taking Georgia back to the national championships when it is held for the 35th time in the team format this May in Palo Alto, Calif. Garrapiz returns an All-American and three-time All-SEC selection, while he starts the year ranked No. 14 in the ITA rankings and Bern-stein follows with a preseason nod of No. 76.

COACHESManuel DiazHead Coach23rd Season

Now in his 23rd season at the helm of the Georgia men’s tennis team, head coach Manuel Diaz led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament semifinals last year for the fourth time in five seasons. Overall it was Georgia’s 32nd trip to the big stage and they advanced there on the home courts as the NCAA Tournament came to Athens for a record 26th time. When the Bulldogs defeated Vanderbilt on March 15, 2010, Diaz became just the sixth head coach in Georgia history to notch 500 career wins. One of the nation’s top coaches, Manuel Diaz led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive NCAA Championship in 2008. The sixth NCAA team championship title in school history, Diaz has accounted for four of them as the head coach (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008). He was also an assistant coach under Dan Magill on both of the other winning squads (1985, ‘87). Diaz is currently one of only two active head coaches to win multiple NCAA championships (USC’s Peter Smith). Diaz coached the Dogs to their third consecutive SEC Championship in 2008, earning the 25th regular-season champi-onship in school history, far and away the most of any conference school. His teams have also claimed a conference-leading seven SEC Tournament championships. Combined, Georgia has claimed 32 SEC championship titles and has doubled up to win both championships in the same year six times. Diaz holds an impressive career record of 509-108 (.825) in his 22 seasons. In addition to his four NCAA Championships, his teams have reached the NCAA finals seven other times: 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2006. In addition, they have reached the semifinals three times and quarterfinals five times. Since 2006, Diaz has coached his team to a remarkable 135-16 record that includes an undefeated 32-0 National Champion-ship season in 2007. Georgia was also 30-1 in 2006, with its lone loss coming in the NCAA Finals. From April 23, 2005 to March 19, 2010, Diaz coached the Dogs to 71 straight wins at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the second-longest home winning streak in program history. Diaz led Georgia to 11 consecutive national top-five finishes from 1989 to ‘99, a feat no other school in the country can match. Diaz’s Bulldogs won the program’s first-ever triple crown of tennis in 2001, as the team won its second national title in three years, while Matias Boeker won the NCAA singles crown and teamed with Travis Parrott for the doubles championship. It was only the third time since 1977 that such a feat had been accomplished. Diaz has led Georgia to 12 regular season SEC titles in his 21 seasons to go along with seven SEC Tournament titles. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1995, 2001, 2006 and 2007. Georgia has seen 29 different players earn 62 All-America honors in Diaz’s 22 seasons. This total ranks tied for second behind Stanford for most All-Americans nationally in that time period. Diaz has also coached six of Georgia’s seven four-time All-Americans, in-cluding: Al Parker (1988-91), Mike Sell (1992-95), Jamie Laschinger (1993-96), Steven Baldas (1995-98), Bo Hodge (2001-04) and most

recently John Isner (2004-07). Under his leadership, Georgia has been among the most nationally-televised collegiate programs. Georgia made history in 2007, when its national championship win in Athens at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex became the first collegiate tennis match ever to be televised live. The production was carried on ESPNU. The Bulldogs have had a player in the NCAA singles finals in 1991, 1992, 1993, 2002 and 2007, and appeared in the team final in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2008, all of which have been televised by ESPN. In 2005, Isner and Ruiz’s doubles win was televised by The Tennis Channel. Georgia had a player in the team, singles and doubles finals in 2001, but those matches were not televised. Diaz is a respected and honored leader in collegiate tennis including being selected as the Wilson/ITA National Coach-of-the Year in 1995, 2001 and 2007. He was inducted into the State of Georgia Hall of Fame in the fall of 2000. For his outstanding contribution to tennis in his home country of Puerto Rico, Diaz was inducted into the Puerto Rican Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998. Diaz is married to the former Suzanne Rondeau of Toronto, Canada. They have three sons: Manuel III, Eric and Alex. Eric will join the men’s tennis team in the fall of 2010.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

198519871999200120072008

The 1985 Georgia Bulldogs, led by seniors in their top four positions, were perhaps the most powerful team in school history. The Bulldogs were led by Mikael Pern-fors, a native Swede who won a second straight NCAA singles championship with a victory over teammate and roommate George Bezecny. Bezecny played No. 2 for the Bulldogs while Allen Miller, a four-time All-American, was No. 3. The remainder of the lineup consisted of Deane Frey at No. 4 singles, sophomore Philip Johnson at No. 5 and freshman Trey Carter at No. 6. Georgia finished the spring dual match schedule with a perfect 26-0 record.

The 1987 Georgia tennis team completed the SEC hat trick by winning the indoor tournament, the confer-ence round robin with a 9-0 record and the league out-door championship. The lineup for the 1987 national champions consisted of the following players: Philip Johnson at No. 1 singles, Stephen Enochs at No. 2, John Boytim at No. 3 and Trey Carter at No. 4. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ lineup was Mike Morrison at No. 5 singles with T.J. Middleton at No. 6. Freshman Jim Childs saw significant action at No. 6 singles and was a regular at No. 3 doubles.

The 1999 Bulldogs entered the newly formatted 64-team tournament as the No. 10 seed, playing host to one of 16 regional tournaments. Through the course of the two-day regional and four-day championship tourna-ments, the Bulldogs overcame seemingly insurmount-able odds, fighting off three team match points to rise to the top. In the team final against top-ranked UCLA, Georgia opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point. The Bruins retaliated, proving that they would not go quietly. Falling into a tie situation in singles play, junior Joey Pitts swung the balance for the Bulldogs in a three-setter at the No. 4 position.

The 2001 Bulldogs not only etched their name in the annals of Georgia tennis history but the NCAA record books as being only the second program to win the championship, fail to reach the Round of 16 the following year and then claim another NCAA crown in a span of three years. Stanford is the only other team to accomplish such a feat. Georgia rode a 25-match winning streak through the tournament to capture the program’s fourth national title. In the team final, Georgia clinched the doubles point for the early lead, but lost the first set in three of the singles matches. However, with Georgia leading 3-1, Chad Carlson topped Adam Carey 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to clinch the match for UGA.

The 2007 Bulldogs completed its dream season by winning the program’s fifth NCAA Tram Championships on its home courts. The national crown was the final piece to a perfect puzzle as the squad captured every possible team title during its undefeated run, which also included the ITA Team Indoor National Championship and the SEC Tournament crown. Georgia was so dominant as a team that for the first time in team history, the Bulldogs never allowed an opponent more than two points in a match. Even then, UGA opposition gained two points only twice, while suffering a total of 22 shutouts.

In 2008 the Bulldogs became the first squad to win back-to-back NCAA Championship titles since Stanford accomplished that feat in 1998-99. The Bulldogs of-ficially captured the championship by defeating the Texas Longhorns in the finals, 4-2. However, arguably the victory most indicative of the Bulldogs’ talent came in the semifinal round as Georgia topped the undefeated, No. 1-ranked and heavily-favored Virginia Cavaliers, 4-3. Overshadowed by the run to the national championship run, the Bulldogs also captured their third consecutive regular-season Southeastern Conference championship with a 10-1 record.

DAN MAGILL TENNIS COMPLEXThe Dan Magill Tennis Complex has long stood as a beacon of

excellence in collegiate tennis. With a total of 16 courts (12 outdoor and four indoor) and a total seating capacity of about 5,000 fans, it is one of the largest on-campus tennis facilities in the country. The ever-evolving complex underwent a $7.5 million development and renovation project in 2002 that included the construction of a brand-new men’s clubhouse. In 1991, the complex received lights thanks to the generous support of Oscar-winning actress and Athens native Kim Basinger. Regarded as one of the best collegiate tennis facilities in America, the complex has been the host of the NCAA Championships a total of 26 times and will be the host site again in 2012.

The Dan Magill Tennis Complex is named for one of the greatest Bulldogs, Georgia legend Dan Magill. Regarded as one of the most influential men in the history of collegiate tennis, Magill served as Georgia’s head tennis coach for 34 years. Magill led the Bulldogs to two National Championships (1985 and 1987). he is still a very active member of the collegiate tennis community, serving as curator and director of the ITA Men’s Collegiate Hall of Fame, which also makes its home at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Magill has devoted his entire life to the University of Georgia and to the development of collegiate tennis. He officially retired from the University of Georgia athletic department in September of 1995, end-ing a 59-year association that began when he served as a batboy for the baseball team in the 1930s.

Over the years, Magill filled a variety of roles ranging from publi-cist, administrator, coach and spinner of yarns. He had no peer as an innovator and promoter, and is known nationally for building over time the country’s finest collegiate tennis facility, one that now bears his name. At the time of his retirement, he was an assistant athletic director and director of tennis. His contributions to the University, the athletic association, and perhaps most of all to the Georgia people have been great.

Much to the delight of all those who know him or of him, Magill has shared some of his knowledge and experiences in four books: “Bull-Doggerel”, “Match Pointers”, “The Pick of Dan Magill’s Columns” and his latest work, “High Port, Haul Ass”, a collection of memoirs from his time in the Marine Corps during World War II. Today, he remains active around town and spends time at the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame, located on campus.

Magill was responsible for bringing the NCAA men’s tennis championships to Athens over 20 times including 13 in a row from

1977-89. He was instrumental in the move to place the Hall of Fame here as well.

In his brilliant 34-year tenure as head coach of the Bulldogs, Magill posted an amazing record of 706-183 (.794), which makes him the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I history. Magill’s teams won a record 13 SEC outdoor championships and eight indoor league titles, while five of his players won national collegiate individual titles.

His 1985 and 1987 teams captured the NCAA Championship. The 1985 team performed the unmatched “hat trick” — they ranked No. 1 in the final national team rankings, No. 1 in individual singles (Mikael Pernfors) and No. 1 in doubles (Pernfors and Allen Miller).

He had 15 players earn All-American honors 23 times. Magill has been named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year

(1980) and earned the prestigious J.D. Morgan Award (1990), the two highest honors a college coach can receive.

While in college and managing Georgia’s tennis courts in the sum-mer, Magill originated the Crackerland Championships, which is still one of the South’s largest sectional tournaments. He also instituted the State Collegiate Championships, the Southern Collegiate Champi-onships and SEC Coaches Indoors.

Magill retired as tennis coach after the 1988 season but is re-garded as one of the most influential men in the history of collegiate tennis. Magill is chairman of the ITA Hall of Fame Committee and is curator of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame. In 1996, Magill was inducted into the Circle of Honor, the Georgia Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame, and in the fall of 1999, the Sanford Stadium press box was dedicated in his honor.

He continued to serve the athletic association as the Director of men’s and women’s tennis as well as assistant athletic director for public relations and the Georgia Bulldog clubs. During his long tenure with the University, he has also wore the hat of sports information director for 27 years and 25 years as secretary of the Georgia Bulldog Club, a booster organization he founded in 1953.

Even with all of his work devoted to tennis, Magill has maintained his game as well. Over the years, he has won numerous titles at the Southern Hardcourts, Southern Closed Clay and Southern Indoor events.

Magill is married to the former Rosemary Reynaud of New Orleans, and they have three children: Dr. Ham Magill, Mrs. William Brown and Mrs. Stephen Sloan.
