huck Liddell ranks as one of, if not the, most famous Cal Poly graduates in theschool’s history. For two years Chuck

“The Iceman” Liddell reigned as the UFC lightheavyweight champion, but before that, Liddellstarred in Mott Gym as a 190-pound wrestler.

Recently, Liddell released a book that chronicleshis life as a fighter. Iceman: My Fighting Lifedebuted on February 17, 2008, and spent multi-ple weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Liddell started training for his career at the ageof 12 in Santa Barbara. He was a four-yearstarter on the football team at San Marcos High School, andbecame a Division I wrestler at Cal Poly in 1988. After spend-ing five years on the wrestling squad, Liddell would completehis degree while pursuing a career as a professional fighter, graduating in 1995 with a B.A.in business. As a graduation giftto himself, he had his iconic tattoo inked on his scalp whichreads “Koei-Kan” (“prosper with happiness.”) He would thentransition to mixed martial artist when he earned a purple beltin Brazilian jiu-jitsu under John Lewis, ultimately aiming for acareer that would take his fame and fortune to a new level.

Liddell made his UFC debut in 1998 with a decision victoryover Noe Hernandez. He soon established his reputation as adevastating striker with victories over Tito Ortiz, RenatoSobral and Wanderlei Silva over the next few years. On May26, 2004, he knocked out Randy Couture in two minutes to

win the Light Heavyweight Title. He defendedhis titles successfully five times, all ending witheither a knockout or a TKO. He surrendered hisbelt after losing in a matchup with Quinton“Rampage” Jackson, three years to the day ofbeing crowned champion.

Despite his busy schedule as a fighter and aworld-renowned celebrity, Liddell still takes timeto remember his roots as a Cal Poly Mustang.Liddell can often be seen matside at Cal Polymatches and is an avid fan of the team. He wasinducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fameon Sept. 11, 2009.

This is Cal Poly

More than 19,000 students, nationally-renown courses of study and the top-ranked public master’s university in the western United States

... all 11 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

Located in the central California coastal town of San Luis Obispo, Cal Polycomprises one of 23 campuses in the California State University, thenation’s largest four-year undergraduate university system. Each CSU

campus is given considerable freedom to develop its programs and each insti-tution boasts its own qualities and strengths.

Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing principle of instruction prepares undergraduates forcareers in applied technical and professional fields. From computersto crops, Cal Poly holds that the best preparation for any endeavoris derived through practical application. This ideal has set Cal Polyapart from other institutions and been the school’s driving philoso-phy since its 1901 founding.

Courses at Cal Poly emphasize a high proportion of lab work, field-work and special assignments, culminating with a senior project.Unique on-campus opportunities – such as an organic farm and astudent-run daily newspaper and majors of study ranging from aero-space engineering to wine and viticulture – make hands-on learning a daily real-ity at Cal Poly. In total, Cal Poly confers bachelor's degrees in 64 separate areasof study. Nine of those degrees are exclusive to the San Luis Obispo campus(see next page). For 17-consecutive years, U.S. News and World Report hasranked Cal Poly as the top public master’s university in the western UnitedStates. The publication also ranked Cal Poly’s College of Engineering as the No.3 program in the nation among public non-doctoral institutions (see below).

On-campus activities are headquartered at the renown University Union andCal Poly’s student-run activities have earned enviable reputations across thenation. Week of Welcome offers first-quarter students a successful introduction

to the collegiate experience through a team of trained student leaders and uni-versity officials, all of whom provide academic and social resources, encourageawareness and promote relationships with the campus and central coast com-munity.

Athletically, Cal Poly boasts one of the most successful Division I programsfor an institution of its size. During the 2009-10 academic year, the athletics

department – which sponsors 20 varsity programs – captured BigWest Conference championships in women’s soccer, men’s crosscountry and men’s tennis and enjoyed the All-America selections ofwrestlers Chase Pami and Boris Novachkov. Women’s basketballforward Kristina Santiago was named Big West Player of the Yearwhile softball designated player Anna Cahn earned Big West FieldPlayer of the Year praise. Mustangs earned 42 all-conference hon-ors while seven Cal Poly student-athletes were named Big WestFreshman of the Year in their respective sports.

As testament to Cal Poly’s athletics and academic integrity, 38 Mustangs col-lected Big West All-Academic praise during the 2009-10 school year. The CalPoly Athletics Department also finished second in the Big West Commissioner’sCup, an award presented to the institution with the best overall results in theconference's 18 sponsored sports.

Internationally, Cal Poly was represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics byformer Mustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump), Jimmy Van Ostrand(Canada, baseball) and Stephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for theUnited States in the discus competition was the first such feat by a Mustang ath-lete.

For the 17th-straight year, Cal Poly was rated by U.S.News and World Report as the best public master’s uni-versity in the western United States in its 2010America’s Best Colleges guidebook. Cal Poly moved upfour spots from 10th to sixth in the publication’s overalllist of the west’s best universities – including both publicand private institutions – that provide “a full range ofundergraduate and master’s-level programs but few, ifany, doctoral programs.” The publication ranks collegesthat grant doctoral degrees, such as those in theUniversity of California system, in a separate category.

“Perhaps the most important gauge of the effective-ness of Cal Poly’s educational programs is how suc-cessful our graduates are in the real world,” said formerCal Poly President Warren J. Baker, who retired in2010 after serving for 31 years. “We hear that our grad-uates are doing great things and we take pride in that.Getting a ranking in U.S. News for the 17th straightyear, however, helps to validate the quality of our pro-

grams and the success of our gifted faculty inpreparing students to meet the challenges they willface.”

Within individual areas of study, U.S. News andWorld Report ranked Cal Poly’s College ofEngineering No. 3 among public engineering pro-grams for schools whose highest degree is a bach-elor’s or master’s (Cal Poly was bested only by theUnited States Military and Naval Academies).

A number of College of Engineering programsranked high in the Best UndergraduateEngineering Programs categories. Cal Poly’sindustrial and manufacturing, computer, electricaland mechanical engineering programs were eachranked as the top program at a public university intheir respective specialty categories. Cal Poly’scivil and environmental engineering tracks wereboth ranked as the second best programs at a pub-lic university.

In the 1890s, when a proposal for a teacher training school in San LuisObispo seemed unlikely to succeed, California State Senator SylvesterC. Smith instead suggested a polytechnic institute. Myron Angel, chron-

icler of San Luis Obispo County history, became an ardent supporter ofthe idea and articulated a vision to establish a school that would “teachthe hand as well as the head.” The plan succeeded and on March 8,1901, legislation was signed founding the California Polytechnic School, then a vocational high school.

During the ensuing three decades, Cal Poly evolved into the modernequivalent of a junior college, but its future became uncertain. In 1933,however, Julian A. McPhee, chief of the California Bureau of AgriculturalEducation, saved the institution from abolishment by agreeing to becomeschool president. During the next 33 years, McPhee guided Cal Poly’stransformation into a four-year institution and set an educational standardstill emulated today.

Cal Poly’s first baccalaureate exercises were held in May 1942 and in1947, the institution was officially renamed California State PolytechnicCollege. As programs continued to evolve, the institution becameCalifornia Polytechnic State University in 1972.
