Background
2008 Water Sector Workshop in Arlington, Virginia, produced
three recommendations:
1. Improve water sector career pathways definition
2. Enhance the water sector job image
3. Establish a water workforce resource clearinghouse

AWWA and WEF worked
with the U.S. Department
of Labor to create the
Water Sector Competency
Model in November 2009
Logo underscores role
current and future water
professionals play in the
sustainability of water
resources and systems.
Outreach Objectives
1. To enhance the image of water careers among present and
future job candidates.
2. To guide targeted audiences to the WorkforWater.org web site.
3. To provide utilities with adaptable communication tools that
help promote water jobs.
4. To build partnerships among stakeholders with an interest in
promoting water careers.
Target Audiences
1. Vocational and high school students.
2. College students (2- and 4-year degree).
3. Armed force veterans and other second-career candidates
4. Advanced Science
