Another mini slalom on Friday evening August 6th At Langham Farm Cost £2

FUN, EASY, QUICK

The first two of these have been rip-roaring successes. Come to the next one and see for yourself!

It’s easy! Racing through gates, and try not to touch them (but it won’t matter if you do in our mini slalom). There will be 12 gates only, so a short course.

Practice takes place from 6-7pm. The racing starts at 7pm. Every one gets at least two runs down the course. Last time some had 4 runs!

We will have Mens and Womens events and the results will be put on the whiteboard there, so no waiting around!

River Avon 8th August Meet 9.30am Clubhouse Cost £3

This is a river trip with a difference. We base ourselves at Bradford on Avon and we paddle downstream to the weir in the morning where we shoot it if we are feeling brave and water levels are right.

Then we paddle back to the car park where our packed lunches are waiting for us.

We picnic on the grassy banks of the Avon and when everyone is ready we get back on the water and pad-dle upstream to another weir which we shoot with impunity.

Then on the way back we try our hardest to sink all the instructors before they sink us.

In case you haven’t already worked it out, it’s a

Trip

Bring with you a packed lunch and your change of clothes for canoeing, You can pick up all the canoeing kit that you need when we meet at the clubhouse in the morning.

Suring Weekend 14th /15th August

A self catering, camping and surfing weekend.

It’s time to catch some surf! Yes it’s that

time of year again when we head down to camp at Dinham Farm in Cornwall to catch some surf on anything which floats. Last year was very successful with surfers heading out to the waves very early to beat the crowds. This left the rest of the day to spend with the family on the beach or whatever you want. It’s good safe white water practice for both new and experienced. To partake you will need camping equipment because it’s self catering. If you’re under 18 bring your parents and if you’re over, bring them anyway. Also bring your chosen surf craft and gear - you can borrow club kit if you need to, but be sure to either email Carl (see below) or write it on the list when you sign up.

Costs Transport: variable. (£20-£25) Food: variable (it’s DIY time - you sort it out for yourself!) Camp charges :

2 Adults (tent/caravan) £16 Child (2 – 12 years £4 Child (13+ years) £8 Dogs £1

Dinham Farm Caravan Park at www.dinhamfarm.co.uk

Meet: Arrangements are variable - most people make their own way there on Fri-day. Pair up to share costs! Any questions please email Carl at [email protected]

Pray for waves!

BBQ and Try-a-Boat Day 29th August At Langham Farm Rode 11am-5pm We set up the big marquee and cook over two enormous barbeques so that we can dine in style, what-ever the weather.

People bring along their various differ-ent boats and let others try them out.

We will also, for this year only, enjoy the additional pleasure of a cardboard canoe race, as we are not allowed to burn the two C2s after all! Alex is or-ganising this delightful event and you need to turn to P9 for details.....

COST £3.00 youth £5.00 adults

It is important that you sign up on the sheet in the clubhouse or let Pam know by email if you would like to come so that we can cater for you.

River Frome 19th September Meet 9am at the Clubhouse Cost £3 Not sure of the section we will pad-dle as yet, but the basic format is the same as our other local trips:

Meet at the Clubhouse Select the boats and other

kit we need Get changed Jump into cars Drive to the get on Do the shuttle and go!

The River Frome is flat with several weirs which add to the excitement. We usually paddle about 5 miles and so expect to be back at the clubhouse at 4pm. Weatherwise - we will know nearer the time how warm/cold it will be, but be prepared to have warm clothes for paddling, bring a good packed lunch with choccie bars and a change of clothes in case you get wet.

This trip is good for Passport and One Star paddlers. Our Discover paddlers will also have a good time.

stream, under the bridge, and finish a bit further on. You will have two runs

and your times will be added together. This race is suitable for all, particularly

young people. You only have to be able to paddle in a straight line. There are

age categories for under 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and adults. You can use any boat.

If you would like to race then please write your name on the sheet on the wall

Friday sessions at Langham Farm, 7pm till 9pm. Cost £2

These sessions are for adults, but young people can take part as long as there is an instructor on site to take responsibility on the water. On Fridays, people usually ‘do their own thing’ either slalom training or a gentle paddle down

to just take it easy! We do not carry great stocks of spare kit there, so if you need to borrow club kit ask John in advance (by the Wednesday before) and he will ar-range for some kit to be there

Tiverton Training weekend 9th/10th October Meet 8.30 am at the Clubhouse Cost £35

This weekend prepares you for pad-dling on moving water. We put you into small groups and provide training to develop the skills for moving water – breaking in and out of the flow, surfing, stopper work, rapid running, eddy-hopping and so on.

We paddle the River Exe on both days .

Overnight we stay in the Youth Centre in Tiverton. You need to bring overnight things and any paddling stuff you have. Also a pillow, sleeping bag and mat be-cause we sleep on the floor. Food is provided and you are expected to help with some of the domestic chores like washing up etc.

You can pick up the paddling gear that you want to borrow from the club on the Saturday morning.

Minimum age limit for this activity is 10 years. This trip is really planned for beginners and so priority will be given to our less experienced paddlers. Booking a place is essential and the cost of £35 includes transport, training, accommodation and food. Money must be paid by 1st October.

Langham Cardboard Challenge

This is the first Cardboard Canoe Race to be held by Frome Canoe Club and will take place at the annual BBQ.

The principles of a cardboard ca-noe race are to get from one point on a river to another in a canoe. Sounds easy? But not when your boat is made of cardboard held together with duck tape!!!

On the day the aim will be to get your home-built canoe from the weir at the top of Langham to the bridge at the bottom. The winner will be the team to get the

furthest. Boats can be made in teams of two with one person racing it, or both if it survives that long. Boats must be made entirely of cardboard and duck tape, nothing else.

Prizes will be awarded for Best made and decorated Best performance

So what do you need to do: 1. Form a team of two 2. Sign up on the sheet in the

club house 3. Collect some cardboard and

duck tape together 4. Get building!!! (Boats can be

made before hand or built on the morning. We will have plen-ty of cardboard on the day for on-site construction.)

5. Be ready to paddle it from the weir to the bridge just after lunch.

Judging will be after lunch, followed closely by the BIG CARDBOARD RACE.

MINI SLALOM Round 2: 9th July 19 competitors and lots of spectators made this, our second

mini slalom, even more of a success than the first one!

Numbers of club competitors were up and with the competitors from Yeovil and Griffin club there was a real ‘race fever’ about the evening. So much so, Andrew who was there to help with the event and hadn’t brought his boat, couldn't help himself: he jumped into a Gaybo Sanna Extreme, circa 1976. First run done, he noticed that he was not top of the leader board, so he skimmed seconds off his time by taking the ‘short route’ through the course on his sec-ond run. We won’t mention cheating, will we Andrew?

Reports - Market Yard Slalom

A really relaxed event, and of note was the amount of chatting and friendly interactions that happened on and off all day.

15 club members competed, and with the visiting competitors we had 30 entries all told. It was good to see six visiting clubs: Salisbury, Yeovil, WYCC, Croeseiceiliog, Reading and Cleveland showing that people are prepared to travel the distance for a good event.

Congratulations go William Jones K1M, Kate Johnson K1W who got pro-moted to Division 3 and Ben Nicol C1, promoted to Div 2/3. And a special

mention must go to Andrew Lyall and Jack Hobbs who took first and second place in the Open section, pushing four-times British champi-on, Ray Calverley, into third place. Well done you two!

We would like to thank the vast numbers of Canoe Club volunteers who turned up to help. It was in-deed lovely having so many people around.

And of course it all wouldn’t have been possible with out the expert organisation of Andy A. Thank You!

A technical course with a couple vicious staggers but with some classic S gates which ensured that the course flowed well. Designed by Andrew L, it was good to paddle and seemed to encourage multiclass entries!

Just to say that Ray Calverley was British champion just a few years ago. (1969 and ’70s!). It seems he is dipping his toe in the water again, and chose our event to be his first after the gap. It was good to see him!

Jim’s Slalom History of FCC

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

The first event I have a record of is 1980, May 17/18, when Graham Warnecke ran a Novice and Open Team Event.

The following year 1981 the event was moved to April 25/26 so not to clash with the World Slalom Championships at Bala North Wales because Graham was Judging there! A second event was run in 1981 October 19/20 this time as a Division 4 event. Graham continued to run 2 events a year until 1984 when Bob Hinton ran a Division 4 event in the June and Sue Arney ran the Octo-ber event.

Graham was back running the June 1985 event, and Mark Knapton the October one, both events being a Divi-sion 4 and Novice. 1986 saw Steve Ellis run the May/June event and Sue Arney the October Event.

1987 Graham ran the June event and Rob Gill the October event. 1988 Mark Scott ran the June event and Sue Fear (nee Arney) the October, event both events again Division 4 and Novice.

Move on to 1989 Graham for the June

event and John Kent the October event. 1991 Brian Williams was the organiser for the first Division 4/5 event for FCC in June and Rich Carter the October event. 1992 Graham ran the June event Division 4/5 with the Canadians running on the Saturday and Kayaks on the Sunday. Steve Ellis ran the same format in October.

A change of format in 1993: double events were introduced and Steve Ellis ran the first Division 4/5 Double in June and October although this event was a single 4/5 with Canadi-ans on the Saturday and Kayaks on the Sunday. Steve Ellis ran both events in 1994 in the same format as the previous year.

I have no idea who ran the 1995 events as the entries had to be sent to the Slalom Organiser to an ad-dress in Eden Vale Road Westbury. (I think this was Rich Carter’s old ad-dress.) The same for 1996 but this time to an address in Leafield Place, Trowbridge. 1997 Rich Carter ran the June event 4/5 Double and Brian Wil-liams the October event 4/5 single.

Jim, our Vice President looks back in the archives and reminds us of events from our first slalom to today. Scary or what?

Jim and his lovely wife Catharine are those two people whom you see every year in the caravan at Langham Farm Slalom. Over-heard this year by one of the competitors along the lines of (but slightly less politely!): ‘Who is that person sitting in Control doing stuff on the computer?...’ Well it’s our Jim!

Page 16: 2010 08 newsletter

16

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

Reports - Jim’s slalom history continued

Same format for 1989 with Mike Hill running the June Event and Sean O’Gor-man the October event.1990 Sue Fear ran the June event and Mark Scott the October event

Phew! Only 10 years to go.

New format again for 2000 Division 5 dropped and Frome ran their first Divi-sion 3/4 Double in June and September with Arthur Belbin at the helm. 2001 same format with Pip Hallett for the June event and Sean O’Gorman the Oc-tober event. I believe this was the year the October events were dropped with Rich Carter running the Division 3/4 Double in June. The following organised the events up to 2010, 2003 Andi Willsher, 2004 Pam Dixon, 2005 and 2006 Rich Carter, 2007 2008 2009 and 2010 Andy Bell.

There are two years that stand out alt-hough I can’t remember the dates.

1) the river rose and on the Saturday every team capsized. On the Sunday you could not get under the bridge and paddlers were getting caught in the trees so the course started at the finish and ran on the back river to the end of the car park. Starting at gate 20 to gate 1, nobody made a mistake.

2) The river rose so fast we all had to get off the site within an hour. I had to drive my van over the bridge un-

der at least a foot of water, with two ladies from the canteen, Catharine and two dogs all squashed in the 3 front seats a bit scary. Bill the Farmer towed my caravan out with his tractor.

A few more facts: at the 1980 event the penalties were a nightmare to judge: inside touch 1 pole 10 sec-onds added; inside touch 2 poles 20 seconds added; outside touch 1 pole 10 seconds added; outside touch 2 poles 20 seconds added; 50 seconds for missing a gate.

1984 the penalties were altered to 5 seconds per pole outside or inside touch. 1987 the rules were changed again with 5 seconds added for hitting one or both poles. The rules were changed several times during the following years doing away with reverse gates – eventually coming into line with the ICF rules of 2 sec-ond penalty for touching one or both poles and 50 seconds for missing a gate, deliberate displacement or up-side down through the gate line. This only a brief interpretation: full de-tails are in the 2010 Slalom Yearbook or on the Slalom web site.

Happy days.

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

FCC helps the Mayor to launch the arty boats in the Frome Festival’s celebration of the River Frome.

When we were asked to give advice about how the Mayor could launch some 75 decorated wooden boats carved by two local artists, we said:

Well, you must do it at the Pe-destrian bridge, not Willow Va-le . That’s too far up. The boats will take absolutely ages to float down!

The Mayor can’t walk down to the water’s edge. It’s too steep and too brambly/nettly/muddy!

The ‘take-out’ can’t possibly be the weir. That’s far too far. Use our jetty instead.

We can’t provide a floating pon-toon,

But we could take the Mayor to the middle of the river in an open boat!

Thinking that would be the end of it, we were surprised when they said ‘Yes please’. So a plan was hatched. With the help of Jack S and Ben N in kayaks and three open boats, we helped the Frome Festival in this, the finale of the arty activity to celebrate the River Frome.

There was a fanfare of trumpets, a speech by the mayor (using our new loudhailer!) and then the ceremonial launching. A vigorous shove by the Mayor sent the first boat rather un-ceremoniously into a nose dive, effec-tively disposing all the paper messag-es under water! Oops.

The pretty boats drifted quietly downstream, pushed more probably by the play-boating waves of the Jack and Ben than by any flow of water.

It was a beautiful evening for the spectators who watched their paint-ed boats drift downriver. It was a pleasure for the club to help, and we got a picture in the Somerset Stand-ard to boot!

Peter and Pam find another way to shepherd the

boats along!

Our New Level One Coaches Come Up Trumps Again Every year the club organises ‘taster’ sessions for other groups and organisa-tions. We put on special sessions for them and provide a canoeing experience which is a ’seriously fun’ session. This year we have provided more sessions than we can ever remember: 11 at the last count, including a birthday party, a works event, and of course the usual scouts, cubs and cadets. As the year has gone on, the in-structors have decided to have some fun too... Read on.

Observed on the 12th July session: Alex lines all the participants up on the jetty. They have no idea what is coming next. He gets them facing him with their feet half on and half off the

Seriously though, our new coaches have done us proud, providing excitement and entertain-ment as they work through a repertoire of raft games, chariot racing, seal launching, not to mention the good old fashioned stand-up-in-your-boat. Gone is splashing. That’s too tame. Come to stay is sinking!

Little do the participants know when they stand fresh faced at the start and Pam says: “Let me introduce you to Sam/Alex/Jack/Megan, your Coaches for today”, that they will be screaming their heads off in sheer terror as they are pushed over into the water or they are pushed backwards down the seal launch ....

A big thank you goes to all the volunteers who have given some 95 members of the public a chance to experience kayaking. We may never see them again!

Our new coaches who have been available to help so far: Me-gan, Jack, Alex, Sam, Andy B and Stuart.

Jim Croft seen every year at Langham Farm Slalom and known now

as ’that bloke on the computer’ ....

I started canoeing in 1948 with the scouts in a canvas open canoe on the Grand Union Canal and the River Colne near Watford Hertfordshire - my Mum said I could only go if I did not get wet!

In the 1960s I started to help teach canoe-ing at local night school classes. This pro-gressed to taking groups to Symonds Yat for the weekend and the slaloms at Jack

Fields Rapids near Telford and Darley Abbey near Derby. Other than com-peting myself I mainly concentrated on judging and passed my ICF Exam in 1980 enabling me to judge at the 1981 Slalom World Championships at Bala. In the late ’70s I did compete in the veterans class in Spain coming 2nd out of 12.

My two sons competed in slalom, Tim in K1M and Lance in C1 and together in C2 they both got into Division 1. They have now retired from canoeing.

I was Eastern Region Slalom Rep for 18 years and took several teams abroad competing at slaloms in the old Czechoslovakia, Eastern and West Germany, Netherlands and France.

For many years I was GB Under-16 Team Manager taking teams to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Germany. Now I regularly go abroad as the GB Judge at Internationals, my last two assignments the World Cup race at Augsburg Germany and the European Championships at Liptovsky Mikulas Slovakia.

Catharine and I started coming to Langham Farm in 1990 with a trade stand. As there was no electricity on site we would bring a generator – this led to me running a results service on what is now an enormous and very ancient portable computer. This in turn led to us being made Vice Presidents of the Club.

Youth Members : Where are you?

This is a request to all our youth members. The Newsletter is here for you as well. So why not write up an activity you have taken part in? Or send in a funny story or cartoon. (must be clean!) Please feel free to contribute to the magazine. It is here for you as well as the adults in the club.

So next time you go on a trip, weekend away, training course or have simply had an inspiration, then send in your article to the Editor. Photos are good too!

Ed: Let’s get some more facts straight, shall we? . . .

An apology to Vicky Bennett and Michael Topp

In the last newsletter, the results of the Langham Farm slalom were published,

along with the list of all those competitors promoted in the event. However, a

key result failed to make it into the article. This key fact is that the C2 team of

Vicky Bennett and Michael Topp did not only come 4th out of 4 teams in Satur-

day’s event – a remarkable feat I’m sure you will agree, due to their intense

commitment and epic skill – but they were also promoted to division 2/3.

Therefore, Frome Canoe Club would like to apologise profusely for this grave

error, and for the great offence caused by the omission of this information. So

well done Vicky and Michael for the awesome C2 paddling you have demon-

strated to everyone. What happens as

the evenings draw in?

Well, some people keep paddling as long as they can, but the formal sessions of Blue Bibs, Yellow Bibs, Green Bibs and Foot-ball Bibs cease after our last session on 15th September.

When the evenings are really too dark to pad-dle, we still meet on Wednesdays in the clubhouse to stay in touch with each other and to sign on to trip lists! And once a month we have a DVD night when we gather to watch a DVD together.

Research on River Access

Can you help with this research project on River Access? The project is being under-taken as part of a post-graduate disserta-tion looking into individuals’ experiences of paddling under the current access situ-ation throughout England. Below is a link to an online survey. The link includes a short synopsis of the research being undertaken, the results are anonymous and individual people will not be identified within this research.
