Meredith College students have participated in athletic events on
campus for more than 100 years. Athletics at Meredith College began
in 1904 with the advent of Meredith’s Athletic Association. In addition
to sponsoring other student activities around campus, the athletic
association began to sponsor sports in 1937. The original sports
at Meredith included basketball and tennis. Meredith’s basketball
program began with two teams, the Reds and the Blues. The first
competitive games against other schools were held in 1904 with two
games against St. Mary’s College.
In the early years, Meredith athletic activities included swimming,
soccer, horseback riding, tennis, baseball, basketball, golf, football and
field hockey. The first events were primarily inter-class competitions.
In November 1937, Meredith
aligned with the Virginia Field
Hockey Association and
became a part of the United
States Conference.
The 1940s and 1950s
brought some big victories
for the basketball team. In
1944, Meredith’s freshman-
sophomore basketball team hosted the Peace Junior
College (now Peace College) team. The outcome was a victory for
Meredith, and the game marked the beginning of the heated cross-
town rivalry between the two Raleigh women’s colleges. In 1952, the
basketball team pulled out impressive victories against the University
of North Carolina and Duke. The field hockey team continued this
trend in 1952 by defeating both the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils.
Meredith athletics took on a new life with the completion of
Weatherspoon Gymnasium in 1970. Weatherspoon is still the home
of the basketball and volleyball teams, training facilities and athletics
offices. The first full-semester golf team was launched in 1976.
The volleyball and tennis teams saw their first winning seasons
during the 1970s.
Riding the wave of momentum built in the 1970s, Meredith athletics
earned state and conference titles in the 1980s. In 1980, the golf
team won the NCAIAW state championship while the tennis team
took the conference title. Also in that year, the Student Government
Association adopted the angel
as the school’s official mascot.
The golf team finished second
in the AIAW Division III national
tournament in 1981, making
it the first bid for a Meredith
athletics team to compete for a
national championship. Softball
was added as a varsity sport during
the 1985-86 academic year. The most recent varsity sports to be added
were soccer in 1993 and cross country in 2005.
In recent years at Meredith, there has been an increase in the
competitiveness of the athletics programs on a regional and national
level in Division III. The program has had five NCAA tournament
bids across three different sports since 2001 (basketball 2001,
2003; tennis 2003, 2007; and soccer 2007). During the summer
of 2007 the name of the sports teams was changed to
“Avenging Angels” to emphasize the prowess of
Meredith athletes. The 2007-08 season marked
the first year of competition in the USA South
Athletic Conference.
Meredith is committed to blending
intercollegiate athletics with a strong academic
program. Student-athletes follow the same
academic requirements and standards as other
students; they must maintain good academic
standing with the College, be full-time
students and follow the rules of the NCAA.
The athletic program maintains the same high
standards set for other departments and the same
commitment to the education and personal development
of student-athletes.
MEREdith COllEgE AthlEtiCS hiStORy thE diViSiON iii EXPERiENCE Meredith athletics teams
participate in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association. Meredith College fully supports the Division III
experience that allows the student athlete to enjoy competitive
sports and other activities throughout their college years. Division
III athletics offers student-athletes the opportunity to become
well-rounded individuals who successfully integrate athletics and
academics while experiencing all aspects of college life. Division III
athletics feature athletes who can receive only academic financial
assistance and athletics departments that are staffed and funded
like any other department in the College.
ACAdEMiCS Meredith College’s commitment to academics
is exemplified by its athletics teams. Each year, the USA South
Athletic Conference recognizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the
classroom by naming an Academic All-Conference team. A student-
athlete must have earned a 3.0 GPA in each of the two semesters
of a given year to be eligible. The athletics department also offers
a special Athletics Director’s List that recognizes the athletes that
receive a 3.5 each of the two semesters. During the 2007-08 season,
48.7% of Meredith’s student athletes finished with a 3.0 or higher
and 20% received the Athletics Director’s award with a 3.5 or higher.
MEdiCAl SERViCES In addition to the academic and fitness
programs available, the athletic training staff provides excellent
care for participants. The athletic training support staff consists of
head athletic trainer, Sharon Malley, student athletic trainers from
the University of North Carolina and on-call physicians. Some of the
services and equipment provided in the Weatherspoon Gymnasium
include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice and
electrical stimulation. Meredith College serves as a clinical site for
the UNC-Chapel Hill Undergraduate Athletic Training Program.
StRENgth ANd CONditiONiNg The program is headed
by Meredith’s Strength and Conditioning Coach David Zinn who
is a certified personal trainer and sports conditioning specialist.
An instructor in the Department of Health, Exercise & Sports
Sciences at Meredith, Coach Zinn assists in the development and
implementation of conditioning and weight training programs for all
of Meredith sports.
COMMUNity SERViCE The student athletes at Meredith
College are committed to much more than sports. Members from
each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee
that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates
community service. Some of their past volunteer work includes
Special Olympics of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service
Raleigh, and the USA South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the
Conference and Pennies for a Purpose.

2009 SoFTball SEaSon PREvIEw anD 2008 REvIEwThe 2008 Meredith College softball season was an exciting year that
marked a lot of “firsts” in the program’s history. Head Coach Robert
Luckadoo came to Meredith in late January from his assistant coach’s
position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to become
the program’s full-time head coach. Luckadoo took over a softball pro-
gram that had struggled in the previous four seasons, and had not seen
double-digit victories for a season since 2003. The 2008 season also
marked Meredith’s entry into the nationally-renowned and extremely
competitive NCAA Division III USA South Athletic Conference. This is
the first conference membership in the history of the college.
Highlighting the 2008 softball season were many team and individual
statistics that give a glimpse into an extremely bright future for the
Meredith softball program. The team finished the season with 10 wins
overall and four wins in the USA South. This season marked the first
time since 2003 that the program had seen double digit victories
and saw the first USA South conference win in a doubleheader split
with N.C. Wesleyan. Conference wins also included a sweep of Mary
Baldwin College and split with Ferrum College to tally four USA South
victories for the season.
Offensive production, and specifically the team’s new hitting program,
was a key focus upon Luckadoo’s arrival in January 2008. After strug-
gling offensively for the past three seasons, 2008 proved to be one of
Meredith College softball’s best offensive years on record. The 2008
team broke many statistical offensive records including the Meredith
single season record for home runs (24), seven different individuals hit-
ting home runs in a season and finishing the season ranked 40th in the
nation out of 386 teams in home runs per game. Prior to this year, the
team had only hit one homerun in the previous two seasons combined.
Team members continued to leave their marks on the Meredith, USA
South, and NCAA record books as many individual offensive and
defensive records were crushed in 2008. Freshman Arielle Stout led
the charge in rewriting both the offensive and defensive categories.
Offensively, the freshman utility player tied the conference lead in
home runs with nine during the regular season and 11 overall for the
year. Stout finished third in the conference in slugging percentage
(.770) and third in the conference in RBIs (45). She finished the
season ranked 42nd in the nation in homeruns/game, 26th in the
nation in RBIs and 60th in the nation in slugging percentage out of
nearly 6,000 NCAA Division III softball players.
Freshman Becki Roebock led the conference in on base percent-
age and had a team-high batting average of .411. She also had five
doubles and three triples. Amber Littesy, McKenzie Caskey and Beth
Sprinkle provided offensive “pop” at the plate as well, and combined
for 11 home runs, 10 doubles and one triple. The trio also accounted
for 42 of the team’s 138 RBIs for the season. Freshmen Dana Higgins
and Val Sherrer combined for eight doubles, one triple, two home runs
and 21 RBIs during the 2008 campaign.
Defensively, pitcher Arielle Stout led the conference in strikeouts per
game, averaging over 13Ks per game. She also broke the USA South
Conference Record for strikeouts for a single game (which stood at
16) with 17 strikeouts against Lycoming (Pa.) on March 15, 2008.
She recorded seven games with double-digit strikeouts including two
games tying the previous conference record with 16 strikeouts, and
two with 15 strikeouts. Stout was named either rookie of the week or
rookie pitcher of the week three different times during the season.
Both Roebock and Stout were named to USA South All-Conference
teams for their 2008 offensive and defensive performances.
The 2009 Avenging Angels look poised to continue their assault on
the USA South Conference record books, returning six starters from
last season’s squad and adding recruits at several key positions, in-
cluding pitcher and catcher. Taking the circle this year for the Angels
will be freshman standout Jordan Smith. This Fuquay-Varina, N.C. na-
tive is expected to make an immediate positive impact to the team’s
pitching staff, after leading her high school team to the fourth round
of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs in 2008. Returners to the Avenging
Angels pitching staff are sophomores Arielle Stout, Val Sherrer and
Becki Roebock. All three now have a full season of collegiate pitching
experience under their belts and are expected to make significant
contributions in the circle this season.
2009 meredith avenging angels softball 3
Completing the battery for the team this year, the Avenging Angels are
expected to start with a new face behind the plate this season. Fresh-
man Patricia Davis is expected to see time both behind the plate and
in the field. Davis brings a tremendous amount of catching experience
to the Angels’ squad as an excellent starting catcher for East Carteret
High School. Davis is sure to also add extra homerun power to the
Angels already strong offensive lineup, after hitting four round trippers
in her senior high school season. Freshman Olivia Izze will see playing
time as a utility player and catcher.
The Angels have great depth and experience in the outfield this season.
Senior Toni Tricarico, three year starter and captain for the team, is
expected to anchor a position in the grass for the team this season.
Tricarico has the experience, leadership abilities and softball skills
to take this young Avenging Angel team the distance in 2009. Coach
Luckadoo knows that strong leadership from the upper classmen and
returners is extremely important at the collegiate level of play.
“With a young team like we will be putting on the field this season,
leadership from our upper classmen will be one of the keys to our suc-
cess in 2009,” said Luckadoo.
New additions to the outfield include Duplin County native, freshmen
Logan Hill, and sophomore Kate Moye from Pamlico County.
Returning to the Avenging Angels’ infield are sophomore short stop Dana
Higgins, sophomore third base Val Sherrer and sophomore first base
Becki Roebock. Sophomore Arielle Stout is expected to see time at sec-
ond base when not in the circle. Freshman recruit Jordan Zachmeyer, a
Raleigh, N.C. native, and true utility player for the Angels this year, will
see time at second and third base as Sherrer and Stout rotate into the
circle in relief. The offensive combination of the sophomore infield of
Roebock, Stout, Sherrer and Higgins last year combined for 20 doubles,
six triples, 13 homeruns and 76 RBIs. The foursome is expected to
continue right where they left off in the upcoming 2009 season.
“I am extremely excited about our team in 2009. We have an out-
standing group of returners from last season and have added talented
recruits at several key positions who will be able to step in and con-
tribute immediately,” said Luckadoo. “This group of student athletes
is the hardest working team that I have ever coached. Their focus,
their commitment and their dedication to our softball team and to this
program’s success is incredible. This group of players exemplifies all
the positive attributes of what being a Meredith College student athlete
is all about. They make me proud to be a part of this program.”
The Avenging Angels open up their 40 game season on February 6,
2009, at home hosting NCAA Division II, Lees-McRae.

RobERT luCkaDoo enters his
second year as head coach of the Meredith
College softball program. During the 2008
season, the team finished the season with
10 wins overall and four wins in the USA
South. This season marked the first time
since 2003 that the program had seen
double digit victories and saw the first USA
South conference win in a doubleheader
split with N.C. Wesleyan. Offensive produc-
tion, and specifically the team’s new hitting
program, was a key focus upon Luckadoo’s arrival in January 2008.
After struggling offensively for the past three seasons, 2008 proved to

the Meredith single season record for home runs (24), seven different
individuals hitting home runs in a season and finishing the season
ranked 40th in the nation out of 386 teams in home runs per game.
Prior to this year, the team had only hit one homerun in the previous
two seasons combined.
Luckadoo came to Meredith from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, where he served under head coach Donna Papa as an
assistant coach. Luckadoo brings a wealth of experience from the Tar
Heel softball program where he worked with pitchers and catchers, was
responsible for video analysis of Tar Heel hitters, and assisted practice
planning and coordination of the Carolina Softball Camps and Clinics.
Luckadoo is entering his 15th season as a fastpitch softball coach
and instructor and his 26th season as either a coach or a player. He
has successfully coached at the 16U, 18U, high school and collegiate
levels of play. In addition to UNC, previous collegiate experience in-
cludes Montreat College in Black Mountain, N.C., where he served as
an assistant in charge of pitchers, catchers, outfielders and recruiting.
As a private pitching instructor, Luckadoo has worked with over 200
young pitchers at the junior high, high school and collegiate levels
of play. In addition to planning a summer softball skills camp geared
toward the development of softball skills for players from 10-18
years of age being held at Meredith College this summer, Luckadoo
is scheduled to work 2009 summer camps at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.
Coach Luckadoo is a native of Rutherford County, N.C., a 1983 gradu-
ate of East Rutherford High School (Forest City, N.C.) and a 1988
graduate of NC State University. Luckadoo, a strong proponent of
higher education, completed a master’s degree in sports management
in June 2008 from the United States Sports Academy. He is a North
Carolina Certified Science teacher and has worked as an instructor of
Physics and Physical Science in McDowell and Burke County in North
Carolina. Luckadoo and his wife, Paula, have two daughters, Lindsay,
age 19, and Sara, age 17.
Shona guEvaRaShona Guevara enters her first year as assis-
tant coach of the Meredith College softball
team. The Chino Hills, Calif. native will
serve on the staff of Coach Robert Luckadoo.
Guevara comes to Meredith from her as-
sistant’s position at Cabrini College (Pa.).
Guevara was a stand out collegiate pitcher
taking the circle for NCAA Division II pow-
erhouse Humboldt State University in 2001
and 2002. During 2002 as a sophomore, Guevara set a Great North-
west Athletic Conference (GNAC) record for most wins in a season (25),
most strike outs (172), and most innings pitched (236). In 2001 she
was named the GNAC Rookie of the Year, and garnered GNAC and Na-
tional Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-West Region first team
honors. In 2001, her team was selected to serve as the U.S. Olympic
alternate for the China Invitational International Tournament.
After sitting out her 2003 season with an injury and a medical redshirt,
Guevara moved to Pennsylvania where she joined the perennial NCAA
Division II national power Lock Haven University pitching staff. In
2004 and 2005 of her junior and senior seasons, she combined for
287 strikeouts while only allowing 41 walks, and maintaining a 1.4
earned run average for both seasons. In 2004 and 2005 she was
named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region first team, in 2005 a Pennsyl-
vania State Athletic Conference first team selection, and in 2005 broke
the Lock Haven school record for most wins as a starting pitcher (19).
Guevara will assist Luckadoo with the Avenging Angel’s pitchers,
catchers and outfielders. She will also be significantly involved with
other team day-to-day duties such as travel and team administration.
Guevara received a Bachelor’s degree in English from Lock Haven
University (Pa).

Meredith College students have participated in athletic events on
campus for more than 100 years. Athletics at Meredith College began
in 1904 with the advent of Meredith’s Athletic Association. In addition
to sponsoring other student activities around campus, the athletic
association began to sponsor sports in 1937. The original sports
at Meredith included basketball and tennis. Meredith’s basketball
program began with two teams, the Reds and the Blues. The first
competitive games against other schools were held in 1904 with two
games against St. Mary’s College.
In the early years, Meredith athletic activities included swimming,
soccer, horseback riding, tennis, baseball, basketball, golf, football and
field hockey. The first events were primarily inter-class competitions.
In November 1937, Meredith
aligned with the Virginia Field
Hockey Association and
became a part of the United
States Conference.
The 1940s and 1950s
brought some big victories
for the basketball team. In
1944, Meredith’s freshman-
sophomore basketball team hosted the Peace Junior
College (now Peace College) team. The outcome was a victory for
Meredith, and the game marked the beginning of the heated cross-
town rivalry between the two Raleigh women’s colleges. In 1952, the
basketball team pulled out impressive victories against the University
of North Carolina and Duke. The field hockey team continued this
trend in 1952 by defeating both the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils.
Meredith athletics took on a new life with the completion of
Weatherspoon Gymnasium in 1970. Weatherspoon is still the home
of the basketball and volleyball teams, training facilities and athletics
offices. The first full-semester golf team was launched in 1976.
The volleyball and tennis teams saw their first winning seasons
during the 1970s.
Riding the wave of momentum built in the 1970s, Meredith athletics
earned state and conference titles in the 1980s. In 1980, the golf
team won the NCAIAW state championship while the tennis team
took the conference title. Also in that year, the Student Government
Association adopted the angel
as the school’s official mascot.
The golf team finished second
in the AIAW Division III national
tournament in 1981, making
it the first bid for a Meredith
athletics team to compete for a
national championship. Softball
was added as a varsity sport during
the 1985-86 academic year. The most recent varsity sports to be added
were soccer in 1993 and cross country in 2005.
In recent years at Meredith, there has been an increase in the
competitiveness of the athletics programs on a regional and national
level in Division III. The program has had five NCAA tournament
bids across three different sports since 2001 (basketball 2001,
2003; tennis 2003, 2007; and soccer 2007). During the summer
of 2007 the name of the sports teams was changed to
“Avenging Angels” to emphasize the prowess of
Meredith athletes. The 2007-08 season marked
the first year of competition in the USA South
Athletic Conference.
Meredith is committed to blending
intercollegiate athletics with a strong academic
program. Student-athletes follow the same
academic requirements and standards as other
students; they must maintain good academic
standing with the College, be full-time
students and follow the rules of the NCAA.
The athletic program maintains the same high
standards set for other departments and the same
commitment to the education and personal development
of student-athletes.
MEREdith COllEgE AthlEtiCS hiStORy thE diViSiON iii EXPERiENCE Meredith athletics teams
participate in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association. Meredith College fully supports the Division III
experience that allows the student athlete to enjoy competitive
sports and other activities throughout their college years. Division
III athletics offers student-athletes the opportunity to become
well-rounded individuals who successfully integrate athletics and
academics while experiencing all aspects of college life. Division III
athletics feature athletes who can receive only academic financial
assistance and athletics departments that are staffed and funded
like any other department in the College.
ACAdEMiCS Meredith College’s commitment to academics
is exemplified by its athletics teams. Each year, the USA South
Athletic Conference recognizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the
classroom by naming an Academic All-Conference team. A student-
athlete must have earned a 3.0 GPA in each of the two semesters
of a given year to be eligible. The athletics department also offers
a special Athletics Director’s List that recognizes the athletes that
receive a 3.5 each of the two semesters. During the 2007-08 season,
48.7% of Meredith’s student athletes finished with a 3.0 or higher
and 20% received the Athletics Director’s award with a 3.5 or higher.
MEdiCAl SERViCES In addition to the academic and fitness
programs available, the athletic training staff provides excellent
care for participants. The athletic training support staff consists of
head athletic trainer, Sharon Malley, student athletic trainers from
the University of North Carolina and on-call physicians. Some of the
services and equipment provided in the Weatherspoon Gymnasium
include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice and
electrical stimulation. Meredith College serves as a clinical site for
the UNC-Chapel Hill Undergraduate Athletic Training Program.
StRENgth ANd CONditiONiNg The program is headed
by Meredith’s Strength and Conditioning Coach David Zinn who
is a certified personal trainer and sports conditioning specialist.
An instructor in the Department of Health, Exercise & Sports
Sciences at Meredith, Coach Zinn assists in the development and
implementation of conditioning and weight training programs for all
of Meredith sports.
COMMUNity SERViCE The student athletes at Meredith
College are committed to much more than sports. Members from
each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee
that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates
community service. Some of their past volunteer work includes
Special Olympics of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service
Raleigh, and the USA South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the
Conference and Pennies for a Purpose.
