Ray Jones, who also works on the FSN football, men’s basketball and wom-en’s basketball broadcasts, returns this season as play-by-play commenator for volleyball. Jones, who will be doing volleyball play-by-play for the sixth season in a row, has been a part of the FSN team since 1991. VOLLEYBALL FACILITIES

    Vines Center

    Campus East Volleyball Facility

The Vines Center, home of the Liber-ty University volleyball team, has played host to some of the most memorable moments in program history. The Lady Flames’ boisterous fans have helped en-courage the team to numerous important victories, including a pair of Big South ti tles. Liberty has played especially well at the Vines Center in recent years, going 67-27 at home in the past eight seasons. Liberty has hosted the Big South Vol-leyball Championship inside the Vines Center on two occasions (2001 & 2007), and the Lady Flames have captured the championship both ti mes. Over 3,000 fans watched the Lady Flames defeat Coastal Carolina, Winthrop and Radford to win the 2001 conference ti tle. The 1,125 fans present at the semifi -nal win over Winthrop, and the crowd of 1,037 at the championship match versus Radford, represented two of the largest single-match att endance fi gures in Big South volleyball history, unti l the 2007 campaign.

Liberty averaged the highest att en-dance in the conference in 2007, helping the Lady Flames squad earn the No. 1 seed for the Big South Volleyball Champi-onship at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames broke the Big South single-match att endance mark in 2007, as 1,583 fans fi led in to see Liberty de-feat Winthrop on Oct. 27, 2007, halti ng the Eagles’ 63-match Big South winning streak. Two weeks later, on Nov. 10, the record was eclipsed once more when 1,622 fans watched Liberty sweep Rad-ford on Senior Night. The Vines Center, completed in No-vember 1990, also serves as the home of the Liberty men’s and women’s basket-ball teams, and the wrestling squad. The facility, which seats 8,085 spec-tators for volleyball, hosts Liberty Univer-sity Convocati on services and numerous music concerts. The Harlem Globetrot-ters, Nati onal Basketball Associati on exhi-biti on games and the Big South Basketball Championship have also been played at the facility.

During the spring of 2007, the Lib-erty volleyball program was given a sec-ondary practi ce facility as part of a new, on-campus training complex. The existi ng $750,000 facility on Campus East houses the volleyball coaches’ offi ces and a team room, and serves as the team’s exclusive practi ce facility whenever the Vines Center and Schilling Center are unavailable. “We are excited about the directi on of Liberty Volleyball,” stated head volley-ball coach Shane Pinder. “It is amazing to see God’s hand moving in all areas of our program. The most recent miracle is the additi on of new offi ce spaces, which in-cludes a team room with a practi ce gym-nasium att ached. “This facility allows us a bett er op-portunity to recruit, as well as more op-portuniti es to train the team throughout the season. The new volleyball complex takes another step toward Dr. Falwell’s

dream and vision of building a world-class University and athleti cs program.” Ashley Webber, the starti ng middle blocker for Liberty’s 2007 and 2008 Big South championship teams, added, “The new facility not only strengthened our team on the court, but also off the court as young women serving the Lord.” The Lady Flames and their coaching staff are grateful for the donati ons they have received over the course of the past two years. These monetary contri-buti ons have enabled the team to begin furnishing their new facility, as seen in the photo at bott om left . Donati ons are sti ll being sought in order to complete the furnishing of the Campus East facility. For more informa-ti on, contact Liberty Assistant Athleti cs Director for Development and Flames Club Director Bob Good, at (434) 582-2178 or [email protected].

Liberty entered the 2008 Big South Volleyball Championship at UNC Ashe-ville’s Justi ce Center trying to accomplish something which had never been done in program history. The Lady Flames were aiming to capture back-to-back Big South ti tles for the fi rst ti me. Aft er batt ling injuries during various parts of the year, the Lady Flames closed out the regular season with consecuti ve 3-0 sweeps of High Point and Winthrop. Liberty’s season-ending surge left the team in a three-way ti e for the Big South regular-season championship, along with Coastal Carolina and High Point. However, the Lady Flames owned the ti ebreaker and entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the second year in a row. Liberty opened the weekend by fac-ing the newest Big South member, No. 8 seed Gardner-Webb, in the fi rst round. The Lady Flames needed only 68 minutes to defeat the Bulldogs in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-15) sweep. Serving keyed the Liberty victory over Gardner-Webb, as newly minted Big South Player of the Year Kallie Corbin tallied fi ve of the Lady Flames’ 12 aces. Karyl Bacon added her fi rst of three double-doubles in the tournament, fi nishing with a match-high 10 kills and 12 digs. Next up for the Lady Flames was a semifi nal ti lt against No. 4 seed UNC Ashe-ville, which had defeated Liberty at the Justi ce Center 15 days earlier. This ti me around, the Lady Flames’ defense was the story. Liberty came up with 69 digs and 10

blocks during their fourth consecuti ve 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20) whitewashing. Corbin’s 17 digs paced four Lady Flames with double-digit digs, while Ash-ley Webber had a hand in seven blocks. Sophomores Nicki Scripko and Bacon sparked the off ense with 12 and 10 kills, respecti vely. No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina, on a 10-match winning streak, stood across the net from Liberty in the Nov. 23 cham-pionship match. The Chanti cleers put up a strong fi ght, but the Lady Flames’ bal-anced off ensive att ack propelled them to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20) triumph and the Big South ti tle. All six Liberty starters fi nished with at least seven kills, led by Bacon’s 15. Tour-nament MVP Corbin enjoyed a stellar all-around performance, ending up with seven kills, 46 assists, a team-high 21 digs and three blocks. Corbin became the fi rst player in conference history to be voted Big South Championship MVP in back-to-back sea-sons. She was joined on the all-tourna-ment team by Bacon and Scripko, who made the squad for the second consecu-ti ve year. With the Big South Championship trophy in hand, the Lady Flames advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. Liberty was able to take a set from No. 4 nati onal seed Nebraska on the Huskers’ home court, before falling 3-1 (11-25, 25-21, 16-25, 19-25) and end-ing a stellar season at 25-9.

All-Tournament Team member Karyl Bacon recorded the

    championship-winning kill.

    BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, ac-tively pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partner-ships, increased television packages and quality athletic competition while intention-ally fostering the academic, personal, so-cial, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the conference’s mission of “Develop-ing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charles-ton Southern (then Baptist College) Athlet-ic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, re-ceiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Sin-gleton was selected as the League’s fi rst commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition was in the fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I sta-tus. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including vol-leyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as commis-sioner, and in 1990, the league received its fi rst automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifi er to the NCAA Baseball Champion-ship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the conference im-plemented its public relations and compliance programs, and intro-duced its fi rst-ever men’s basket-ball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the fi nest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kal-lander replaced Sasser as the League’s third commissioner,

and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the conference to new levels. The conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the fi rst time in conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its fi rst long-range strategic plan, re-affi rming the league’s vision as a distinctive athletic conference committed to the quality of in-stitutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidi-fi ed conference membership with the ad-ditions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kal-lander’s long range vision has also includ-ed technological advancements, as the conference introduced its fi rst live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monu-mental growth and success in nearly ev-ery sport. During this time, the conference has had two individual national champi-ons, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has re-ceived national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basket-ball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & fi eld and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the fi rst men’s ten-nis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basket-ball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Sub-division in 2006, and had an institution fi nish fi fth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Cham-pionships – the conference’s highest-ever team fi nish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07, the Big South was the only conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last

fi ve years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fi fth year of the Big South’s football existence. The conference’s tagline, “De-veloping Leaders Through Ath-letics,” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the confer-ence’s 25th anniversary. The league also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in league history from 1983-2008, with Liberty Universi-ty’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s fi rst 25 years. The conference’s on-fi eld ac-complishments have been du-plicated in the classroom. An-nually, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presi-dential Honor Roll for maintain-ing a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

Shane Pinder has helped the Liberty volleyball program reach new heights during his fi ve seasons as head coach. Most recently, the 2008 Virginia Sports Informati on Directors (VaSID) State Coach of the Year guided the Lady Flames to their second straight Big South ti tle, marking the fi rst ti me Liberty has ever repeated as con-ference champion. The 2008 Lady Flames went 25-9 overall, wrapping up the squad’s best two-year run at the NCAA Division I level. Liberty, which shared the Big South regular-season crown for the second season in a row, is now 52-18 in the past two years. For the second straight season, the Lady Flames won a set in the fi rst round of the NCAA Division I Tournament, versus eventual Final Four qualifi er Nebraska. Liberty’s season also featured the program’s fi rst-ever victory against a Division I team from Califor-nia, when the Lady Flames swept Big West runner-up UC Irvine. Individually, sett er Kallie Corbin was named the Lady Flames’ fi rst honorable menti on AVCA Division I All-American, one of many awards she earned during the year. Pinder also conti nued to de-velop young talent, as libero Kelly Haseman gave Liberty a repre-sentati ve on the Big South All-Freshman Team for the fi ft h season in a row. Pinder’s 2007 squad captured the program’s fi rst Big South ti tle since 2001 and took a set from Final Four parti cipant California in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Tournament. Liberty went 27-9 on the year, establishing a school NCAA Division I record for victories and marking the third-biggest improvement in the na-ti on from the previous year. As a result, Pinder swept the Big South and VaSID State Coach of the Year honors at season’s end. The Lady Flames swept Winthrop 3-0 on Oct. 27, 2007 halti ng the Eagles’ 63-match Big South winning streak. The win was part of Liberty’s string of 10 consecuti ve 3-0 sweeps during October. One key to the Lady Flames’ success in 2007 was defense. Lib-erty ranked eighth in the nati on with 19.81 digs per game and gar-nered honorable menti on for the CVU.com Deep Digging Team of the Year award. During the 2006 campaign, Pinder guided the Lady Flames to a 9-5 conference mark, which enabled the team to capture the No. 3 seed in the Big South Championship and host a fi rst-round match for the fi rst ti me in fi ve years. Both senior middle blocker Autum Black and freshman sett er Corbin were included on the VaSID All-State second-team roster at season’s end. Liberty had never boasted multi ple VaSID honorees before.

Pinder oversaw the emergence of sophomore sett er Lara Bar-tolomeo, sophomore outside hitt er Jessica Nelson and freshman outside hitt er Kendall Nichols in 2005. Bartolomeo and Nelson ranked among the Big South leaders in assists and kills, respec-ti vely, and Nichols made the Big South All-Freshman Team. Another highlight of the Lady Flames’ 2005 season was a victory over Bing-hamton, a team which won 20 matches and qualifi ed for the NCAA Division I Tournament. In 2004, Pinder’s fi rst season as head coach, the Lady Flames claimed 10 wins in their fi nal 13 matches. Liberty’s season ended aft er the Lady Flames took the eventual Big South champion (Win-throp) to fi ve sets in the semifi nal round of the Big South Volleyball Championship. A number of Pinder’s players were honored aft er the season, highlighted by Kristi n Colson’s second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honor and Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Prior to his head coaching positi on, Pinder spent three seasons (1999-2001) as an assistant on Liberty’s coaching staff . In the role, he helped guide the Lady Flames to Big South Conference ti tles in 1999 and 2001 and two trips to the NCAA Division I Tournament. Pinder, a nati ve of Nassau, Bahamas, att ended Broward Com-munity College in Miami, Fla., for two years and graduated from Liberty Bible Insti tute in 2000 and Luther Rice Seminary in 2004. Pinder and his wife, Haley, reside in the Lynchburg area with their daughter, Graysen Avie, who will turn four during the 2009 season.
