    FROM the founder

I am very excited to inform you that Monte Pictures willbe celebrating its second anniversary on February 4,2009. I am simply astonished, yet very certain that I

am able to pursue such a dream. In the next severalyears, I plan to begin producing feature, documentary, commercial, student, and short films. Several monthsago, I was writing in my journal and it dawned on me. Iam living in my generation that has absolutely noboundaries. Have you ever heard the expression: Itsimpossible. The new expression should be saidcorrectly: the impossible just takes longer. Today, inthe twenty-first century, the sky isnt the limit anymore;its what beyond the sky, the universe. Anything isguaranteed possible if you pursue it, of course, Icannot deny that the destination maybe successful noraccomplishable, but the journey is what defines thecharacter in all of us.

In 2002, I was seventeen young and very ambitious. Halle Berrywas named Best Actress of the year by the members of theAcademy for her performance in Monsters Ball, making her the firstAfrican-American woman to this prestigious honor. I knew from thevery moment I wanted to win an Oscar, too. People ask me all thetime: why the Oscar? and I would reply: because not everyonecan be called an Oscar winner and to win an Oscar, out of the

millions of actors-writers-director-etc., around the world just makes ita whole lot more fascinating.

When Halle Berry marked her name in history, I knew for a fact thatI wanted to mark my name into history too. I researched thoroughlyon the history of the Academy Awards and found neither Latinodirectors nor writers had ever won the Oscars in any categories; on

the contrary, Pedro Almodovar won an Oscar for writing in 2003 forHabla Con Ella, but he is from Spanish ancestry.

Who Should Win: Anne Hathaway was stellar in Rachel Getting Married. Th

Health Ledger was absolutely brilliant in his performance as The Joker in The

Dark Knight. The passing of Heath Ledger a year ago, not only shocked theworld, but Hollywood lost a great talent. Surprisingly, The Dark Knight hadgrossed $531,039,412 domestically in North America, making it the secondhighest grossing film of all time behind Titanic with $600,788,188domestically. In order for Heath Ledger to prepare for the role as The Joker,Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, formulated the charactersposture, voice, and personality, and kept a diary, for which he documentedJokers thoughts and feelings.

Heath Ledger was astonishing in the lead role as Ennis Del Mar in Ang LeesBrokeback Mountain. At the 79th Academy Awards, Philip Seymour Hoffmanwon the coveted Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal as Truman Capote in thefilm Capote; Heath Ledger lost the Oscar which I felt he should have rightfullywon for his gripping performance. This year will be different at the 81st

Academy Awards; Heath Ledger is nominated for Best Actor in a SupportingRole, Ledger has already garnered the majority of film awards this season.

Now, the members of the Academy will luckily honor Heath ledger as thisyears Best Supporting Actor for his performance as The Joker. Rest inpeace Oscar winner Heath Ledger!

Sean Penns performance as Harvey Milk has already being declared byfilm critics alike as this years best performance by an actor. Penn won hisfirst Oscar in 2005 for his performance in Clint Eastwoods Mystic River. This year, its very likely, Penn will be taking home his second Oscar. However, he does have some competition for the coveted Best ActorOscar; see Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler.

Milk opens with archival footage of police raiding gay bars and arrestingpatrons during the 1950s and 1960s, followed by Dianne FeinsteinsNovember 27, 1978 announcement to the press that Supervisor HarveyMilk and Mayor George Moscone have been assassinated. Milk is seenrecording his will throughout the film in nine days before his assassination. The film then flashes back to 1970, with Milks first meeting with his muchyounger lover, Scott Smith.

The adorable and talented actress Anne Hathaway made her actingdebut in the Disney hit film The Princess Diaries. We were blown

away by her supporting performance in Ang Lees BrokebackMountain. We loved her in The Devils Wears Prada, co-starringMeryl Streep. We idolized her capability as an actor in the film GetSmart, co-starring Steve Carell. Anne Hathaway plays Kym, a rebellious, drug-addict, yet intelligentindividual on path that is leading her nowhere. She accepts aninvitation to her sister Rachels wedding, where her husband-to-beSidney is black and her family is Jewish. Kym arrives at her parentshome; unexpectedly, everyone is stunned that Kym showed up toher sisters wedding already aware of her heroin addiction. The film

Changeling is an American period thriller directed by Academy Awardwinner Clint Eastwood. Oscar winner Angelina Jolie scored this yearsOscar nomination for Best Actress. The film is deeply captivating; however,it is not one of Clint Eastwoods absolute best directorial works in hiscareer. Although, what I enjoyed about the film was the thematicunderstanding and tone of the film: disempowerment of women andcorruption in political hierarchies. Critics had panned this film negativelyfocusing on its conventional presentation and the lack of degree of theentire film. I wouldnt worry about the negativity. Youre going to have to bethe judge!?

The film begins in 1928 Los Angeles and tells the true story of a womanwho recognizes that the boy returned to her after her sons disappearanceis an imposter. After confronting the local and city authorities of herimposter son, she is branded by the public and the authorities of being anunfit mother. The events of the case were related to the Wineville ChickenCoop Murders, a kidnapping and murder case that was eventuallyuncovered in the late 1928.

Simon Beaufoy, writer of Slumdog Millionaire, was told Slumdog Millionairewould be released in unusual shoot-to DVD. The lack of funding prevented

both the producers and director to premiere in the United States. However, everything changed when the United Kingdom (UK) film distribution hadprovided the funding and was given an opportunity to release the filmSlumdog Millionaire in U.S. theaters. Luckily, the outcome was spectacular. With a film budget of $15 million, Slumdog Millionaire has already grossedover $50 million and is being hailed by film critics alike as this years bestfilm. The film won four Golden Globes, including Best Picture and BestDirector, and with ten Academy Award nominations it is a sure bet that

Slumdog Millionaire will be chosen for the Best Picture Oscar.

The story tells about a young boy named Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a formerstreet child from the city of Mumbai, and is always being interrogated by thelocal police. He is chosen to become a contestant on Kaun BanegaCrorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and hasmade it to the final question, but is soon accused of cheating.

ate Winset won another Oscar nomination this year for her performance in Theeader. With six nominations to her resume, lets just say if Kate Winslet does notn this year then she will be placed in the history books as one of Oscars biggestsers; all time champ is Peter O Tool with eight nominations without a single win.

uckily, Kate Winslet won the Golden Globe and a Screen Guild Award for hererformance in The Reader. However, these awards were given to her as a Bestupporting Actress - shes nominated for Best Actress. What are the coincidences?ell, not much. Actually, its unheard of for an Actress to garner Best Supportingctress awards and be nominated for Best Actress. Win or lose, history will be oner side.

Audrey Tautou is every bit as cute, charming andnnocent looking, as she played the title role inAmelie, a film that has won the hearts ofaudiences around the world.Like Amelie, the 5-foot-3 brunette moved to Parisat an early age in order to make

Afterwards, Tautou was offered another lead role in the film Amelie, whichecame an international sensation and garnered five Academy Awards.oger Ebert, respected American film critic, called it a delicious pastry of aovie, a lighthearted fantasy in which a winsome heroine overcomes a sad

hildhood and grows up to bring cheer to the needful and joy to herself. Youee it, and later when you think about it, you smile. Audrey Tautou, a fresh-ced waif who looks like she knows a secret and cant keep it, plays the title

Tautou has appeared in several well-praised international films like God isreat, Im Not; LAuberge Espagnole; Dirty Pretty Thing, which marks hernglish-speaking debut as she portrays a Turkish girl living illegally in thereets of London slaving herself to make it to New York City.

n 2004, she was offered another lead role in the box-office hit A Very Longngagement. In 2005, Tautou worked in her first full Hollywood production, pposite Tom Hanks, in the film version of Dan Browns The Da Vinci Code, rected by Ron Howard. She played Sophie Neveu, a cryptologist with therench police, which she embarks on the truth about the The Holy Grail.

3The American Film Institute named Clarice Starling as the GreatestWoman Hero in the history of Motion Picture. I consider Jodie Fostersperformance as Clarice Starling the best performance by an actress todate. Anthony Hopkins made Oscar history by becoming the first BestActor winner for a screen time of less than eighteen minutes.

FBI trainee Clarice Starling is pulled from her training at the FBIAcademy at Quantico, Virginia by Jack Crawford of the BureausBehavior Science Unit. The Sound of Music won five Academy Awards,

cluding the coveted Best Picture. Unfortunately, The Sound of Music is notonsidered the greatest musical of all time by the American Film Institute, as Singin

the Rain holds that position; fortunately, AFI has declared the film as the mostmous and popular musical ever produced. So there, Singing in the Rain!
