Professional Development Program
Welcome to the 2009 Professional Development program at South West Healthcare. This section contains a general overview of the program, the orientation packages for each of your rotations and the self-directed learning packages. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the year or this package please contact Vikki Hoy or Mick Edwards on 1288.
Aims
The objective of the program is to consolidate the participant’s clinical skills and theoretical knowledge in acute medical/surgical nursing whilst providing experience in Emergency and Intensive Care nursing within a supportive environment.
Rotations
The program is composed of rotations through the Emergency Department, Intensive Care and Ward Five. Each rotation will be four months duration. Clinical Support
The education team will be responsible for the overall supervision of the program. You will be allocated preceptors for your rotations through the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.
Emergency Department: during you rotation through the Emergency Department Kate White will be your allocated preceptor. She will be responsible for your orientation whilst in the Emergency Department. Intensive Care: during your time in ward four, your allocated clinical preceptor will be Tina Johnstone.
Ward Five: during your rotation through ward five the Clinical Support Nurses (Vikki Hoy & Mick Edwards) will be your resource nurses.
Requirements
Throughout the year you will be expected to complete clinical learning packages/assessments specific to each area. Please remember that this material is not supposed to be the final word on anything – instead, it’s supposed to represent what gets passed from a preceptor to a new orienteer.
Emergency Department: Throughout your rotation you will experience all aspects of the department. You are required to complete all of the competencies/learning packages in this folder. You will have formal meetings at one & three months during your rotation with your preceptor and one of the Clinical Support Nurses to discuss your progress. You will be required to complete a staff appraisal form on completion of your rotation.
Ward Five: During your rotation through ward five you will be expected to complete your clinical learning packages as well as attend any relevant in-service education sessions. It is an expectation that you will care for the more acute patients during your rotation. On completion of the placement you are required to complete a staff appraisal.
Intensive Care: A clinical learning package has been developed for your rotation through ward four. This package incorporates basic concepts of critical care nursing. You will have formal meetings at one & three months during your rotation with your preceptor and one of the Clinical Support Nurses to discuss your progress. You will be required to undertake a staff appraisal on completion of your rotation. Education
You have three-paid study days available throughout the year. Any studies days that you wish to attend need to be negotiated with your unit manager.
You are required to complete one Professional Development Unit (PDU) through Deakin University. South West Healthcare will fund one unit. You can undertake this study in either semester. Subjects to chose from include: Cardiac and ECG Interpretation Trauma Nursing Shock & Fluid Balance Neuroscience Advanced Clinical Nursing Anaesthetics
You need to contact Deakin University to enrol in the PDU of your choice. Semester One: 10 March - 30 May. Applications close 8 February 2008. Semester Two: 28 July - 17 October. Applications close 27 June 2008.
Further information on PDU’s can be located at www.deakin.edu.au/hbs.
You will also have the opportunity to attend relevant in-service education sessions organised for the Graduate Diploma of Nursing-Critical Care course. A list of topics and dates will be distributed when available.
Learning Packages
As a component of undertaking the program you are required to undertake further education. In combination with undertaking a PDU through Deakin University you are required to complete a number of self-directed learning packages. These packages are not meant to be a complete guide on each condition. They are aimed to provide an introduction to conditions/skills that you will encounter throughout the year. This folder contains your learning packages. Topics to be completed include cardiac care, respiratory issues, cervical spine competency, advanced life support and patient assessment. The packages are designed around each rotation. You need to complete and submit the learning packages allocated for each rotation upon completion of that rotation to the education team. The learning packages will require you to undertake some background reading to ensure you develop a full understanding of each topic. References and relevant articles will be noted and tutorials offered throughout the year will compliment some of the topics from the learning packages. It is your responsibility to complete the learning packages on time. If you require any assistance or further information on a topic please contact one of the Education Team.

Emergency Department
Professional Development Program
Dear
Welcome to the Emergency department. I hope that your rotation with us is
a happy and rewarding experience.
We have put together an orientation and learning package that is designed to
guide your learning during this rotation. The objective of this package is to
provide some theoretical knowledge of basic emergency nursing whilst
providing practical experience. The following pages contain an orientation
document to assist you in becoming more familiar with this department.
When you begin your rotation in ED you will be allocated a preceptor and
be rostered 4 orientation shifts. During your orientation shifts it is important
that you learn:
• How the patient moves through ED
• Documentation (it is quite different from the wards)
• Where everything is kept
This will make it much easier for you to feel confident and competent.
Good communication is the crux of how we manage patient care and our
constantly changing workload. Observe your preceptors and the other staff
to see how they manage this.
During your rotation you will have regular meetings with your preceptor and
the Clinical Support Nurses to discuss your progress. On completion of your
rotation you need to complete a staff appraisal form.
Please don’t hesitate to talk with your preceptor, AUM, or myself if you
have any concerns or problems during your rotation.
You need to complete the learning packages designated for your ED
rotation.
Happy rotation!

Ward Five
Professional Development Program
Dear Welcome to the ward five, Transitional Year, rotation. During your rotation to ward five you will care for patients with a wide variety of conditions. The aim of this package is to refresh and increase your knowledge and understanding of the types of patients and conditions that you may care for. It will assist you in providing safe and appropriate care to these patients. This orientation package will provide information and an introduction regarding the general workings of ward five.
Areas that will be explored through this package include cardiac care, central vascular access device management, medications, care of chest tubes and abdominal assessment. You will be expected to complete each section of the learning package in the allocated time. References to materials that will assist you in the completion of each section will be provided. This package will provide you with the basics of each area but you will be required to undertake further self directed learning to gain a comprehensive understanding of each section.
Whilst you are rotating through ward five Mick and Vikki (Clinical Support Nurses) will be your resource nurses. They will be available for clinical support if you require it and will also provide regular feedback on your performance. Once again when you feel comfortable with ward routine it is an expectation you care for the more acutely unwell patients.
We hope you enjoy your time with us. If you have any questions feel free to contact myself, Vikki or Mick. Jill Hallinan Unit Manager Ward Five
