It’s a season of firsts for the Park University women’s volleyball program. A first-year head coach will lead the team in 2009, and

for the first time in more than a decade, that head coach will also be responsible for the men’s volleyball program at Park. Add to it a pair of first-year assistant coaches and a new conference, and change is everywhere for Park’s women’s volleyball squad. Park will add six newcomers to a roster of five returners in 2009, and the Pirates will at-tempt to improve on a 2008 season that saw 11 wins and a 7-7 mark in conference play, which kept the Pirates out of postseason play. “Everyone we’re bringing in brings some-thing positive to the program,” Mischka said. “I hope that everyone, together, will build a posi-tive, fun and dedicated team that will be pas-sionate about competing and winning.”

THE RETURNERS Park brings back a group of five returners to the 2009 roster, including one all-conference player and three starters from the 2008 season. Gabriela Garcia headlines the returning group, playing both setter and right-side hitter last season for the Pirates while averaging 3.02 assists per game and 1.99 kills on the way to 281 total points. Garcia is Park’s only returning all-conference player, having landed on the MCAC’s Second Team, and she was Park’s most proficient player from the service line, notching 40 service aces in her freshman campaign. Crystal Cole also returns to the Park lineup after averaging 5.26 assists per game as the team’s starting setter in 2008. Cole was also a defensive factor for the Pirates, totaling 192 digs on the year, and she was a force at the service line in 2008 with 28 aces. Rafaella Chaves brings 1.49 kills per game back from last season after getting a late start for the Pirates, playing in only 76 sets during her freshman year. Chaves, along with Garcia, is one of three players from Brazil on the ros-ter, in addition to Mariana Vogado, who enters her sophomore year after posting 71 kills and 13 blocks in limited action. Park’s final returner, Ashley Reinert, was a late addition to last year’s preseason roster and provided depth to the team defensively, where she figures to help this season as a defensive spe-cialist as a sophomore. “Our returners must give us a solid leader-ship base to go off of this season,” Mischka said. “This is a team without a senior on its roster, so we’ll be looking to different leaders throughout the year to step up on a really young team.”

THE NEWCOMERS Park’s incoming signing class includes one junior, as Bethany Buehler joins the Pirate women’s program after attending Maple Woods

Community College. At 6-foot-1, Buehler will be the tallest player on the roster for Park, contribut-ing both in the middle and on the right side. “Bethany is a tall and explosive player, who will help us this year in the middle,” Mischka said. “In the future, she will help us on the right side. She’s a smart player who can hit the ball with a lot of pace, but she can also find the court with smart shots. Her blocking pres-ence should also thrive in our system.” Kristin Beck also joins Park’s roster as a sophomore after attending Missouri State Uni-versity, marking the only other non-freshman transfer to the 2009 Park roster. “Kristin is a local young lady that chose to attend school elsewhere for a year before trans-ferring back home,” Mischka said. “She is a great student, looking to get a pre-medical undergrad-uate degree and she maintains a superb grade point average. “On the court, it’s amazing. After taking a year off from volleyball, she has a great passing platform and a solid approach from the outside. I’m interested to see what she will look like af-ter preseason and working out the rust from her game.” The Pirates’ four-member freshman group is half-local, half-international in 2009, as a pair of local stand-outs from both sides of the state line will join two Canadian players as the only four freshmen on this season’s roster. Lawson, Mo., native Jasmine Kassanavoid is one half of the local freshman class, coming from Lawson High School. Kassanavoid will be a two-sport student-athlete at Park, joining the

women’s basketball pro-gram at the conclusion of the volleyball season. “Jasmine is a very strong kid who hits a heavy ball,” Mischka said. “I look forward to working with her to see where her potential is after not see-ing her play a whole lot in high school.” The second local freshman to join the 2009 class also has ties to a cen-tral Kansas institution, as Brooke Didde comes to the Pirates after a gray-shirt semester spent last

spring at Kansas Wesleyan University. Didde graduated from Leavenworth High School a semester early last December before enrolling at Kansas Wesleyan, and she made the transition to Park University from KWU after Mischka made the same move late at the conclu-sion of the Spring 2009 semester. “Brooke is a great kid and super intelligent,” Mischka said. “Having graduated early from high school, she’s already got one semester of col-lege under her belt and I’ve had the opportunity to work with her on her off-season conditioning and individual practice schedule. She is also re-ally good at receiving the serve which could turn itself into a future as a potential defensive spe-cialist or as a hitter, since she is so versatile.” Mischka rounded out the 2009 signing class with a pair of Canadian student-athletes, as Saskatchewan’s Justine Cleghorn and Brit-ish Columbia’s Tracey Martin join the roster as freshmen. Cleghorn is a 5-foot-8 defensive special-ist from Perdue, Saskatchewan’s Lord Asquith High School, while Martin comes to the Pirates from Langley, British Columbia, and Mennonite Educational Institute, where she was a stand-out

Sophomores Gabriela Garcia (right) and Rafaella Chaves (left) are two of Park’s five return-ing players for the 2009 season. Both saw significant time on the floor last season, as did sophomore Ashley Reinert (below), who was a late addition to the 2008 preseason roster.

2009 PARK WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL • 3outside hitter. “Tracey is a young lady who came highly rec-ommended by coaches in Canada. After watch-ing her on film and talking with her over the phone, I knew she was a young lady we needed to have. She will see a lot of time this year in the middle, but has the potential to play anywhere on the court as a hitter. She really knows the game and looks to have no limit to her poten-tial,” Mischka said. “The addition of Justine is also big for us be-cause I see her pushing herself to see court time as our libero this season. I also think as she gets used to the college game, she will be a defensive machine. She has the volleyball IQ, and really knows how to read the ball well and add her quickness to the mix. She’s very agile and has everything it takes to be a great young player.”

THE SCHEDULE The 2009 Park University women’s volley-ball schedule features eight home matches, eight contests against Kansas City-area rivals and a 16-match schedule in the American Midwest Conference, as the Pirates begin their first year in the AMC since 1999. Not only will the Pirates be entering a new conference for the 2009 campaign, but they’ll also do it with a new head coach taking the reins of both Park University volleyball programs. “The AMC is a really tough conference, both with the competition and the travel to some very difficult places to play,” said first-year head coach Rick Mischka. “I am interested to see how each team matches up, and how we match up against the other teams in the conference.” The 2009 season-opener sends the Pirates to the University of Saint Mary on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m., and after the local-rivalry match with the Spires, Park will travel to Point Lookout, Mo., for four matches in the 2009 Mazzio’s Classic at College of the Ozarks. After the event, Park will travel to Grace-land University on Sept. 8, marking the first of six-straight matches against opponents from the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Park will play Baker, Benedictine, Avila and William Jewell in the 2009 Baker Univer-sity Invitational, Sept. 11-12 before concluding the season-opening 11-match road swing on Sept. 15, traveling to MidAmerica Nazarene in Olathe, Kan. “We play a lot of Heart of America oppo-nents, which is a tough conference,” Mischka said. “It’s a good opportunity to see great com-petition that is relatively close to home, and also helps to play teams that have the potential to be ranked which will only help us become a better team.” The Pirates’ 2009 home opener will also be the team’s first conference test of the AMC schedule, when Park hosts McKendree on Sept. 17. Hannibal-LaGrange visits Breckon Sports

Center two days later, and the Pirates’ first AMC road contest is Sept. 22, when Park travels to Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. Park will then host Missouri Baptist and Harris-Stowe State in conference play Sept. 25-26 before a Sept. 30 date with Avila. The Pirates begin the month of October on the road, going away from home for six-straight matches, start-ing at NAIA national tournament participant Columbia College on Oct. 2. During the road trip, Park will also travel to William Woods, Hannibal-LaGrange and McK-endree, with two matches also scheduled against Williams Baptist in Walnut Ridge, Ark. The Pi-rates return home Oct. 20-21 to play Stephens and William Woods before the final road trip of the season, sending Park to a triangular at Wil-liam Jewell, paired with two conference contest in St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 30-31 at Missouri Baptist

and Harris-Stowe State. The regular season ends Nov. 3 inside Breck-on Sports Center when the Pirates host Colum-bia on Senior Night at 7 p.m., and the AMC postseason tournament begins on campus sites Nov. 10. The tournament continues with semifinal matches on Nov. 12 and concludes with the league’s championship match on Nov. 14. All conference tournament matches are played at the home court of the better seed, and the tourna-ment champion advances to the NAIA national tournament, which begins with opening-round matches on campus sites Nov. 21. The NAIA tournament continues Dec. 2 in Sioux City, Iowa, where the national champion will be crowned on Dec. 6 at Sioux City’s Tyson Events Center.

Park University begins its first season back in

the American Mid-west Conference in the 2009-10 school year, rejoining the league after nine years of membership in the MCAC and as an NAIA Independent in basketball. Park previously held membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. “This is a great partnership for Park Uni-versity and the AMC,” said Park University Director of Athletics Claude English. “In the ever-changing landscape of col-legiate athletics, it is important to have strong alliances within a conference for all of our ath-letic programs. The AMC gives us one unified conference home for our programs, and it also provides a familiarity with our past history in the league.” Park is one of nine AMC member insti-tutions, joining Columbia College, Hannibal-LaGrange College, Harris-Stowe State Univer-sity, McKendree University, Missouri Baptist University, Stephens College, William Woods University and Williams Baptist College. “The AMC looks forward to Park Uni-versity rejoining the conference, and we know that Park will bring a lot to our league in the way of sponsored teams and quality conference competition,” Lowell Pitzer, AMC Commis-sioner, said. “Park’s location and proximity to the NAIA National Headquarters will also provide a boost for our conference. This was a unani-mous decision by our executive committee, and we are excited for Park to come in next year.” The AMC sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an orga-nization of colleges and universities with simi-lar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formu-late and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic envi-ronment.

RICK MISCHKAHead Volleyball Coach (1st Season)

Year SCHOOL W-L PCT CONF PCT2008 KWU 12-24 .333 7-11 .389CAREER RECORD 12-24 .333 7-11 .389

Rick Mischka became the fifth head coach in the history of the Park men’s volleyball program and the sixth head coach in Pi-rate women’s volleyball history on May 13, 2009, and enters

his first season as head men’s and women’s volleyball coach at Park University in the 2009-10 season. “Rick is an outstanding recruiter and has the energy and enthusiasm that it will take to run two successful programs on the high level we expect at Park Univer-sity,” said Director of Athletics Claude English. “He possesses all the tools to get the job done on this campus, and it starts with his ability to bring in the kind of quality student-athletes who can make a difference both on and off the court for our volleyball programs.” Mischka comes to Park from Kansas Wesleyan University, where last season, he coached the Coyotes to a semifinal appearance in the Kansas Collegiate Ath-letic Conference tournament and five wins in the team’s last nine matches of the 2008 campaign. He also coached one first-team All-KCAC performer, as well as one Dak-

tronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete in 2008. “Rick will run disciplined programs, but at the same time, our student-athletes will get the most out of their experience at Park Uni-versity because of his energy and character, which are both outstand-ing,” English said. “We are very excited to have someone of his caliber

on our staff.” Before Kansas Wesleyan, Mischka was an assistant coach at NCAA Division-III Saint Mary’s University in Winona, Minn., where he was responsible for all aspects of the program, and was a major part of the recruiting process. In his two-plus seasons at SMU, the Cardinals rebounded from a 10-19 record in 2006 to a 17-12 overall mark in 2007. Mischka has also been strongly involved in the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic program for the last five years, spending the past two with the Southern Minne-sota Volleyball program. During those two years, he has served as head coach of the 17-elite team that finished the 2007 season 35-22 and was 34th out of 64 teams at the AAU Nationals in Orlando, Fla. “This is my dream job,” Mischka said. “I have wanted to be a dual head coach since graduating from college, and Park is an elite program within the NAIA. Park has the resources to be a nationally recognized program on both sides – men and women – so this is a very exciting move for my career.” Before Saint Mary’s, Mischka was an assistant coach at Graceland University, where he worked with both the men’s and women’s programs for two seasons. Mischka played three years at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where he was co-captain, player-coach and team treasurer for the Pointers’ NIR-SA collegiate club team. While at UWSP, he received NIRSA Club National Championships All-National Team honors as a setter. Mischka then transferred to Graceland where he played for two seasons as setter and right side hitter for the Yellow Jackets before graduating in 2006 with a double-major in Philosophy and Religion. He is cur-rently pursuing his Master of Arts in Human Develop-ment at Saint Mary’s. He is also a certified firefighter, and holds a val-id Emergency Medical Technician license, obtained through the Wisconsin Technical College system.

Jenn Lee is in her first year on the volleyball coaching staff at Park University, coming to the Pirates after a successful playing career in both volleyball and basketball at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Lee was team captain of the Coyote volleyball squad in 2008 under current Park head coach Rick Mischka where she served as the team’s setter, averaging seven assists per game with 11 matches of 30 assists or more and 874 total assists. She also finished her senior campaign with 41 kills and 12 service aces, and defensively, Lee was third on the team in digs, averaging 2.7 per game and totaling 342 on the year. Lee played for the Kansas Wesleyan basketball program in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons under head coach Gordon Reimer, serving as team captain as a senior and scoring 117 points in two sea-sons while passing out 52 assists in the Coyote backcourt. She was a 71-percent career free-throw shooter for the Coyotes and defensively, she picked up 30 steals in two seasons at KWU. Prior to her three-year, two-sport career at Kansas Wesleyan, Lee played at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, Calif., where she was an all-conference basketball and volleyball player, helping the Maraud-er basketball team to a pair of conference titles and the 2005 California State Final Four. Lee holds a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Kansas Wesleyan and she is currently pursuing a master’s degree from Park University in Healthcare Leadership.

JENN LEEAssistant Coach • First Season

Brett Ferguson is in his first year as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s volleyball programs at Park University, joining the Pirate programs after a year away from the Parkville

campus. In 2008, Ferguson served as a volunteer assistant coach with the UMKC volleyball program and head coach Geno Frugoli. Ferguson helped coach the Kangaroos to 12 wins, and UMKC had many indi-vidual honors in Ferguson’s lone season with the program, including 10 academic all-conference honorees and an all-freshman team hon-oree in the Summit League. Ferguson is a 2008 graduate of Park University, playing on the Pirate men’s volleyball squad from 2005 to 2008. While playing for the Pirates, Ferguson helped the team reach the NAIA National Tour-nament in each of his four seasons. In 2008, he helped lead Park to the NAIA National Invitational Tournament Championship, while the team was the national runner-up during his junior campaign when it finished with a 30-3 overall record. During his four years at the school, the libero/defensive specialist helped the Pirates to a 102-16 overall record, appearing in 34 matches and in 64 games during his career. Ferguson holds a degree in historic preservation from Park and during his time as a student in Parkville, he was an active member of the Park Zeta Omicron (Phi Alpha Theta) Chapter, serving as the organization’s president during his junior and senior years.

2008 SEASON RECAP It was an up-and-down year for Park Uni-versity’s women’s volleyball program, starting out hot before falling victim to a pair of losing streaks that left the Pirates under .500 for the first time in five years. Five players were named to all-conference teams and the squad had a pair of national academic honorees before falling just short of the MCAC playoffs in the team’s final year as a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.

SECOND-STRAIGHT OVER KWU For the second-straight year, Park Universi-ty opened its season with a 3-1 win over Kan-sas Wesleyan University, this time traveling to Salina, Kan., on Sept. 2, 2008, to defeat the Coyotes in four sets at Muir Gymnasium. The win pushed Park to 4-1 all-time against Kansas Wesleyan in the all-time series. Park also defeated the Coyotes in four to begin the 2008 season at Breckon Sports Center.

MCAC WIN SPARKS 4-2 START Park University had four wins in its first six matches in 2008, including a 1-0 start in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference when the team took care of Central Christian College at Breckon Sports Center, 3-0. The match was Park’s home opener for the 2008 season, and the Pirates held the Tigers to 18 points or less in each of the match’s three sets.

GARCIA GETS NAIA RECORD In Park’s 3-0 win on Oct. 11, 2008, over Calumet-St. Joseph, Park University fresh-man Gabriela Garcia etched her name in the NAIA record book by putting down 16 kills on 17 attempts without an error. The result was a .941 hitting percentage for the match, which was eight points higher than the previous record which had stood for nine seasons when Saint Mary’s (Neb.) Julie Trouba hit .933 against Avila University. It marked the first time in Park University women’s volleyball history that a player found the top of the NAIA record book in any sta-

tistical category.

STRONG FINISH IN MCAC Through its first 10 matches in MCAC play, Park University’s postseason tournament hopes looked bleak. The Pirates were 4-6 before taking the floor on Oct. 25 against Oklahoma Wesleyan, but Park got the match against the Eagles and fol-lowed with a win over Haskell Indian Nations University for the first back-to-back confer-ence wins of the 2008 season. A loss to Peru State eliminated a chance at an above-.500 conference record, but Park finished the season on a high note, beating College of Saint Mary (Neb.) to end the sea-son on Nov. 8, 3-1. The win moved the Pirates into a fourth-place tie with the Flames, but CSM advanced to the postseason by virtue of the league’s tie-breaker rules, putting an end to the Pirates’ 2008 campaign.

AWARDS FOR 2008 Park University’s women’s volleyball team earned accolades both on and off the court in the 2008 season, including five all-confer-ence honors, two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete designations, an AVCA All-Region honor and four conference player of the week awards. Allison Block and Sydney Rennack head-lined Park’s 2008 award-winners, claiming the program’s two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete designations for the year. Block was also one of three players named Honorable Mention All-MCAC, joined by fellow-seniors Daniella Martins and Alison Joens on the list. Carolina Faria was a First Team performer in the MCAC and also earned the designation of All-AVCA West Region Honorable Men-tion as a libero. She was also the recipient of all four MCAC player of the week honorees during the season. Garcia rounded out Park’s post-season award winners, earning Second Team All-MCAC honors at year’s end.

The 2008 senior class (left sidebar) led a group of five freshmen, including Mariana Voga-do, into the 2008 season. Vogado will return to the Park women’s volleyball roster in 2009 as one of five veterans on a roster with six newcomers.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the features

of both small-town life and the flashing lights of the big city. With a population of just more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college ath-letics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Mis-souri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east of Park University’s Parkville Campus gives Park students two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas.

The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metropolitan Area is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw

Kansas City’s downtown skyline, one of the metropolitan area’s most recognizable views, as seen from across the Missouri River. The down-town area, which has undergone a drastic face lift in the last two years, is about 10 miles from Park University’s Parkville campus (above). Home to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the College Basketball Experience, Municipal Auditorium and the Power & Light District, downtown Kansas City is re-establishing itself as one of the area’s best entertainment districts.

Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kansas. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kan-sas City, Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an esti-mated population just shy of 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kan-sas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards, and the Kansas Speedway, which is host to several NASCAR events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. The Wizards currently play next door to Kansas Speedway at Community America Ballpark, which is also home to KC’s minor league baseball franchise, the Kansas City T-Bones. The Wizards are scheduled to open a new stadium in 2011 where Bannister Mall once stood on the city’s east side. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis, and the city will add two more minor league franchises during Park Univer-sity’s 2009-10 school year when the Missouri Mavericks of the CHL begin play in Inde-pendence, along with an American Basket-ball Association franchise that will work to begin play in the ABA’s 2009 season. Kansas City is also home to the Sprint Center and Kansas City Power & Light Dis-trict, which opened in 2007 and has quickly turned into one of the region’s top entertain-ment districts. The Sprint Center also houses the Col-lege Basketball Experience, which includes the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Blocks from the Power & Light District and the Sprint Center sits Municipal Audi-torium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007 after more than five years in nearby Olathe, Kan., blocks from both the Sprint Center and Municipal Auditorium. In the 2006-07 season, Park advanced to the tournament’s sweet 16, marking the deepest run in more than a decade by a Kansas City-area team. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, in-cluding Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicles. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza”, the Country Club Plaza is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between the Thanksgiving Holiday and mid-January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas keep shoppers occupied in the Sunflower State.

At nearly 80,000 seats and the third-largest facility in the National Football League, Arrowhead Stadium is known as one of the NFL’s loudest when the Chiefs play on Sundays in the fall. Arrowhead is part of the two-stadium Truman Sports Complex, which also houses the newly renovated Kauffman Stadium, home of Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals. At nearly 40,000 seats, “the K” opened in 1973 and was home to the Royals in 1985 when the club brought home its first-ever World Series title in seven games over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Named after longtime Park University President Donald Breckon, the Breckon Sports Center was built in 2000 and houses the Park University athletic department offices. The 1,200-seat capacity arena in the west dome plays host to men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball games. The east dome serves as practice facility for not only the volleyball teams, but also is a year-round indoor home to the soccer, baseball and softball programs.

Park University’s training facilities for student-athletes includes a regulation track, which is located adjacent to Julian Field, a full weight room and cardio training facility located in the Pirate Fitness Center, as well as a sports medicine facility in the Pirate Fitness Center with three full-time, fully acredited athletic trainers.

Park University’s outdoor athletics facilities include one of the NAIA’s premiere soccer facilities, Julian Field, as well as Comfort Field, which is home to Park’s baseball program, and the Park Soft-ball Complex. Park’s soccer teams also train on a top-notch practice surface at Hemingway Field, located adjacent to the baseball facilities.
