Reflections on Dan Bailey Dan Bailey Breathable Guide Waders On October 25, 2008 the Madison/Gallatin Chapter of Trout Unlimited awarded the “Legends of the Headwaters” award to my father Dan Bailey posthumously. Speaking on his behalf, gave me the opportunity to look back over the milestones in my father’s life. I would like to share these with you.

In 1936 Dan was a professor at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in New York City, and he was working on his doctorate in atomic sci-ence at NYU. He mar-ried Helen in 1936 and they drove to Montana for their honeymoon. Dan spent the sum-mer camped on the Madison and Gallatin Rivers. Helen had to go back to New York City and work. Again they came back for the summer of 1937. Driving from Bozeman to Livingston Helen drove off the road, which was a winding mountain road. The car had to be towed to Livingston to be repaired and it took three days for the

repairs. As Dan walked around Livingston he found a small space to rent on Park Street a block away from where we are located now. The cost was $20.00 a month. Dan found during the previous summer and the summer of 1937 he was unable to buy supplies for fly fishing and got the idea there was a need for a fly shop.

Back in New York he finished all his course work, exams and orals but never finished his thesis. He moved to Livingston in the summer of 1938. Helen came to Montana on vacations but did not move to Montana until 1940 or 1941. Had he stayed in New York City and finished his doctorate, he would have been in the middle of the Manhattan project.

His early years were very difficult but being a fly tier he sold flies to other outlets. As he told me in the early years most of the fishing supply outlets were bars. After his death in 1982, a customer sent me a copy of a classi-fied add from a July 1937 Outdoor Life. “Send for free folder today. (Trial assortment, 5 for $1.00). Dan Bailey, 217 West 10th Street, New York City. After July First, send mail to Ennis, Montana. (The good old days) As you can see this was the start of our mail order business.

In 1946 John McDonald wrote an article in Fortune magazine about fly fishing and mentioned my father as “the crack Montanan, Dan Bailey”. John McDonald was Dan’s best friend and lived in New York City. He and his wife came to Montana every summer for years and spent the summer with us. In 1954 John wrote another article in Volume 1, Number 1 of Sports Illustrated titled “Trout Fishermen, Go West” Again John men-tioned Dan and showed a photo of the store. Lee Wulff came and fished Armstrong’s Spring Creek in 1948. Joe Brooks started coming to Livingston in the early 50’s. By the 50s Dan had made Livingston an international fly-fishing destination.

The April 3, 1958 issue of the Park County News, announced, “$85,000,000 Absaroka, Yankee Jim Dams Proposed by Sen. Murray. Yankee Jim Dam would have flooded parts of Yellowstone Park. The Absaroka dam became the known as the Allenspur Dam. In a 1959 piece in the Park County News, Dan wrote against the dam. “Recreation is one of the largest indus-tries in Park County. Its value is less tangible then that of other industries which are easily measurable in terms of payroll or gross return. The two greatest threats to the fishing resource of the Yellowstone at present are: 1) the possibility of large water developments which could mean much more of a detriment than a benefit to recreation. 2) The possibility of losing

access to much of our best fishing water as fishing pressure increases. He was one of the most vocal opponents to the dams. Having access to national publications helped get the information out. I remember all the talk about the dam. I also remember all the talk after a meeting that took place in the local theater about the dam. This was the first time in my life I became aware of the choices we face.

As we all know a project supported by a Senator is not easy to stop. It takes many people and a lot of time. One must also remember at this time Anaconda Copper owned Lee Newspapers, which were most of the news-papers in Montana.

In 1901 John Muir led a large group of civic and conservation organiza-tions in a campaign to protect the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite Nation-al Park. This campaign was unsuccessful. But it did show those opposed to the dams on the Yellowstone how to organize. Also listing the Yankee Jim Dam enlisted a lot of support from people who wanted National Parks left alone especially after losing in Yosemite.

The issue of the Allenspur Dam ran through the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Many people were involved on both sides. Dan always gave due to those who he thought had done more then he had done. He always knew it took a lot of people and support from many different groups to change the government.During the early 60’s Dan helped with others to start Trout Unlimited in Montana. The founders from Michigan all fish in Montana every summer. Dan servred on the National Trout Unlimited Board for several years. He understood the importance of an organization to protect, conserve, and restore our resources.

The issue of Allenspur would pop up at odd times. However in the early 1970’s the idea became very valid again. This time the need for storage came from Coal Slurry pipelines. The North Central Power Study and the 1972 Montana/Wyoming Aqueduct Proposal showed how one third of the annual flow of the Yellowstone River would have to be diverted to meet the needs of a new massive power complex. To make this happen the Allenspur Dam would have to be built. Let’s not forget energy is again a national issue. Luckily now we had organizations like Trout Unlimited and others to help in this fight. I had just moved back in the fall of 1971 after finishing college and a stint in the army. I became very involved with TU and in a local group headed by Bob Anderson, who was also involved in the early 60’s with Allenspur Dam. These new studies galvanized Mon-tanans as to how we could lose our quality of life and way of life. Most of Montana’s environmental laws were passed in the 70’s. As I look back at the 70’s, I realize how Dan allowed me to get involved in the many dif-ferent issues facing our resources as he became the elder Statesman. The Allenspur Dam idea became a hard sell after the Teton Dam failed on June 5, 1976. Teton Dam was an earthen built dam as Allenspur was to be built. Also both dam sights have a major earthquake fault line running through the dam sight.

Another important issue Dan led was keeping Armstrong’s Spring Creek open to the public. During the 60’s Depuy’s Spring Creek was leased by a few individuals from the Denver area and no one else was allowed to fish it. The O’Hairs, owners of Armstrong Spring Creek, met Dan and said they would like to keep their spring creek open to the public. Dan enlisted the Yellowstone River Chapter (before Joe Brooks died) of TU to lease the Armstrong’s Spring Creek. Dan raised the money from different fishing companies. Eventually this concept did not work, but it set the foundation for fee fishing in effect today. The spring creeks could easily be unavail-able to all of us now.

What I remember most about Dan was the advice he gave those who came to learn about the issues. His passion for the river flowed from his words. He would tell them nothing will change unless you get involved. He would then tell them the many ways they could help.

After Dan died Helen died a month latter. The Joe Brooks Chapter of TU formed the Dan & Helen Bailey Memorial Fund. Norman McClain was one of the earliest recipients. I would like to read a quote from his acceptance speech.

“The truth is I never met either Dan or Helen, but there have been times when I have thought that is one of the reasons why I was selected. If a man or woman lives after death only in the memory of those who were close to him then he will not have a very long or extensive afterlife. One’s friends are limited and mortal. But people like me who did not know the Baileys but admired them greatly and number in the hundreds of thousands are bigger and more durable then reality and make legends that will continue to remain long after us.”

Reflections on Dan Bailey Dan Bailey Breathable Guide Waders

Dan Bailey Yellowstone Guide Breathable WaderThe Yellowstone Guide Wader has gained a new look. To construct our waders we still use our proven 909 micro fiber polyester fabric inte-grated with a laminate and coating membrane and lined with nylon tricot. In the new design we have added a double seat, two-tone colors and an articulated knee. We still use the double layer protection all around the lower legs, and no inside leg seams in the critical areas, The Yellowstone Guide has a heavy duty built in belt and velcro closure gravel cuffs, but the newly added features make this wader stand out. The new clamp on suspenders are easy to remove for easy waist hi conversion. A boot lace clip keeps the gravel cuffs from riding up. The numerous front pocket design has multiple uses. On the out-side in the olive mesh are three smaller zippered pockets to hold tippet, floatant or other small items. Also there are two zippered pockets to hold medi-um fly boxes so flies are handy at all times. Behind the front pocket is a full pocket opened from the top . Finally behind all these pockets is a fleece lined hand warmer pocket. We also have a zip-pered pocket inside the wader which will hold C&F boxes. The top of the wader has a draw string to pull the top of the wader tight. The right and left contoured feet are made with high density neo-prene. A mesh stuff sack is included for storage and travel Stockingfoot sizes: S, M, L, XL, XXL, ML, LL, XLL, MK, LK, XLK, XXLK.

EZ-Zip Guide WaderWe’ve added a second wader to our Guide Series with the Yellowstone Guide Breathable series featuring double seat, two-tone material appearance, a more refined fitting design, suspender configuration, elastic boot lace securing strap and most importantly the chest pocket storage system have all been included

into the new EZ-ZIP model. With all the same features and materials that made the Yellow-stone model such a success remain the same with the addition of a front access RIRI water-proof zipper for exceptional ease on and off,

plus the convenience of the zipper for adjusting to vent air for your max-

imum comfort. This zipper features a reinforced base to keep the bottom from stress and separation where leaks could occur. This large tooth zipper will resist damage caused by saltwa-ter corrosion and is cov-ered by a tailored slip of the 909 polyester outer wader material to pro-tect from sand and de-

bris as well to give the wad-er an eye pleasing appearance.

Many fishermen roll down the upper portion of traditionally de-signed waders to cool off or for shallow water wading. Just zip down the zipper and your upper body will cool off. If you roll the wader down, you must first unzip the zipper all the way down. Do not roll tightly for storage or travel or fold the zipper while closed. Stockingfoot sizes: S, M, L, XL, XXL, ML, LL, XLL, MK, LK, XLK, XXLK.

Dan Bailey Lightweight Breathable Waders A long time favorite with anglers around the world, our lightweight breath-able waders have remained relatively unchanged since we introduced them in 1997. Why change a good thing? To make it better of course!

We took the same lightweight material (the outer shell is micro denier nylon taslon with a coating layer, then a laminate layer of

Entrant-HB, and then tricot layer) and added a sec-ond layer around the lower leg for increased dura-bility. Additional new features include an articu-lated knee that reduces excess material to provide a better fit, and a front-mounted chest pocket system. The pocket system (the same as on our top of the line guide wader) consists of two medium-sized, zippered fly box pockets, a di-vided tippet storage area and a fleece-lined hand warmer pocket. Other features include built in gravel guards, adjustable suspenders, contoured, high density neoprene feet, and built in side straps that eliminate the need for a

separate wading belt. Sizes: S, M, L, XL, XXL, ML, LL, XLL, MK, LK, XLK, XXLK.

Dan Bailey Mens Breathable HippersCut from the same durable material as our lightweight breathable wad-ers, these hippers are a must for backpackers and the answer for shallow wading. The hippers are now constructed using a four layer waterproof breathable membrane. The hippers feature a unique foot-bed which provides a great fit with-out the bulk of extra material. The built in gravel guard features a vel-cro closure to keep sand and gravel out. Velcro tabs on the uppers allow you to snug down the tops for a more customized fit. All seams are taped for durability.Sizes: S, M, L, XL.

Dan Bailey Breathable Waist-Hi WaderDan Bailey Waist-Hi's are cut to allow a more comfort-able fit, and are made from the same durable material as our Lightweight series wader. The Waist-Hi features a 1.5” velcro waist band allowing unlimited adjustment with a padded lumbar. Also new are two front pockets to store flies and other items. The trademark of our Light-weight series waders, outside leg seams, built in gravel guards, and reinforced knees are also included. The per-fect choice when hippers are not quite high enough. This pro-vides the most efficient transfer of casting ener-gy because the heavier line is constantly turning over the lighter line. This design also allows for a delicate presentation because the bulk of the line is farther away from the fly giving it excep-tional mending and roll casting capabilities. Fly Fishing in MontanaMontana offers some of the very finest trout fishing oppor-tunities that can be found anywhere in the world. Thou-sands of miles of fertile trout streams flow throughout the state. Options abound, from trout-clogged tailwaters to freestone rivers to small alpine tributaries. Countless ponds, lakes and reservoirs can also be found teeming with trout. We are particularly fortunate to be based in a region of the state that provides all of these options to the avid angler. From Livingston, you can experience fan-tastic trout fishing right in town or seek out hundreds of streams within a reasonably short drive in any direction.

The Yellowstone River is one of the best trout fisheries in North America and it flows directly through Livingston. With more than 100 miles of Blue Ribbon trout water and several thousand trout per mile, it’s tough to stray too far beyond the Yellowstone. As the longest free-flowing river in the continental United States, with two thirds of the upper watershed protected by National Forest and Yellowstone National Park, the Yellowstone provides a healthy environment for Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. The Yellowstone proves to be a true challenge to one’s angling skills, offer-ing a complex fishery that provides angling opportunities with dry flies, nymphs and streamers. Some days you will encounter match-the-hatch dry fly fishing for selectively feeding trout, while at times you will be required to pound the bank with buggers, swing streamers through the pools or dead-drift nymph rigs through the riffles.

Another main attraction in the immediate area are the spring creeks that flow into the Yellowstone River just south of town in Paradise Valley. Armstrong’s, DePuy’s and Nelson’s are fabled bodies of water and are world renowned for their stellar angling opportunities. With stable stream flows and near-constant water temps year round, they host an extremely fertile environment in which aquatic insects, vegetation and trout all thrive. The creeks present the angler the prospect of fishing for wary trout with small flies and light tippets. Due to the fact that they are privately owned and operated, rod fees do apply and advance reservations are recommended for most of the season.

Another prime destination within easy reach of Livingston is Yellowstone National Park. Few other places on earth offer an angler such seemingly limitless opportunities to pursue wild trout in their native habitat. Outstanding fishing, coupled with abundant wildlife, geothermal fea-tures and breath-taking scenery make the Park a veritable paradise for fly fishermen. Fabled rivers that flow in the Park include the Firehole, Gibbon, Madison, Slough, Lamar, Soda Butte, Gallatin and the Yellowstone. Not to be overlooked are dozens of smaller creeks and lakes that offer excellent fishing prospects as well.

Stonefly “Limpit” Magnetic AccessoriesWith a name inspired by one of mother nature’s most tenacious clingers (a limpet is a marine mollusk like a barnacle) this product line utilizes a simple magnetic clip system that allows you to hang your accessories on your clothing, with no pinholes! Attach to waders, boat bags, rain jackets, your favor-ite fishing shirt, position your accessories where you actually want them, not just where you don’t mind poking a pin through. To use, simply detach the rear magnet and place on the underside of your garment. Align the Limpit accessories on the outside and the force of the magnets will snap them in place. The heart of this system lies in the unbelievable strength of the magnets (the manufacturer actually cautions those with pacemakers to consult a doctor before use) and the rugged simplicity of the design, no more broken clips or pins.

Double Zinger ‘N’ ForcepsConstructed of durable high-density plastic with “hot spot” guides on the front to provide the forceps with easy, no-look magnetic at-tachment. Soft hackle flies are some of the most underutilized weapons in a fly fisherman’s arsenal. When you are on the stream during a heavy caddis hatch and your high floating dry is getting ignored despite the aggressive, slashing rises all around you—try swinging a soft hackle to imitate the emerging caddis the trout are chasing.

Scott Sanchez’s “everything emerger” series of flies work well as imitations of a variety of insects. The key to this highly productive pattern is the non-specific, buggy look and the subtle profile that allows the fly to ride in the film.

In slow moving tailwaters and spring creeks where rising fish have time to inspect each passing insect, trout often key in on the bugs that are deformed or otherwise unable to escape the surface tension of the water. Anglers in the know use cripple patterns to capitalize on this behavior.

Spring Creek Tailwater AssortmentOur shop in Livingston, MT is located near the famous Paradise Valley spring creeks. In our extensive “on-stream research” we have found these flies excel in fooling selective trout. 3 each of: Sawyer Pheasant Tail PMD Biot Parachute Griffith’s Gnat Baetis Foamback Dun

The double bunny won the Jackson Hole one fly competition three years in a row for a reason—big fish can’t resist the undulat-ing action of flies tied with rabbit fur. When you combine bunny strips with an articulated design the end result is a sculpin or leech pattern that is downright nasty.

When twitched across the surface, patterns with rubber legs exude realism and a struggling motion that trout find irresistible. With a com-bination of buoyant foam, fish attracting rubber legs and a bright Hi-vis post, patterns such as the Foam Para hopper are perfect for pounding those grassy banks in August.

Traditional Drys, Bead Head Nymphs Bead Head Nymphs, Caddis Pupa, Caddis Larva, Stonefly Nymphs

In order for a bead head nymph to be effective it needs to quickly descend through the water column to reach the fish’s feeding lane. Flies tied with tungsten beads provide a sink rate nearly double that of traditional brass beads. Tungsten bead flies also work extreme-ly well as droppers off high floating dry flies.

During heavy salmon fly hatches our guides often report great success on low-riding or even submerged patterns such as the drowned salmon fly. An extremely effective strategy incorporates a high floating pat-tern that’s easy to see such as the mystery meat salmon fly with a smaller drowned gold-en stone as a dropper.

Stonefly Dry AssortmentSalmon flies and other large stoneflies bring some of the river’s biggest trout to the sur-face. If you are planning to hit this famous western hatch these are the flies you’ll need. 3 each of:Mystery Meat Salmon Drowned Golden StoneMystery Meat GoldenElk Hair Salmon Fly

In the early 1930’s Dan Bailey met Lee Wulff at a fishing camp in the Adirondack Mountains. Over 70 years later we are still tying Wulff flies as they are meant to be tied and still using them with as much success as ever!

Drake May Fly AssortmentWhen fishing for trout rising to mayflies there are two important factors; the right fly and the right cast. These are the right flies—the cast is up to you. 3 each of: Green Drake Cripple Brown Drake Cripple Brown Drake Parachute Green Drake Wulff
