Joining forces with our local, regional and international part-ners, we have successfully completed another session of the International Model United Nations (IMUN) Summer Camp. Since our first session held in Summer 2007, our center’s reputation, prestige and commitment for social jus-tice, peace and international collaboration has reached a new level. Our quest to harness that capital of trust and channel it towards the advancement of peace and global understanding between young students from around the globe has been our first priority. Tangible result of that effort includes the participation of over 300 students & facilitators from around the world in 2009 regional and International Model United Nations sessions. In addition to the success of Model United Sessions, several of our senior staffs, board members and advisors have at-tended International conferences in the last twelve months. In December 2008, our Board Chair Dr. Len Latkovsky at-tended the annual European Federation of UNESCO Clubs & Associations in Paris, France. In April 2009 Dr. Hoda Zaki attended the United Nations conference on racism and dis-crimination as representative of our Center. In December 2009, Board Member Seth Roberts will be traveling to China to share our expertise in Model UN with the Hailiang Educa-tional Group, China. As we reinforce our partnership at the international level, we are mindful of our determination to help create, facilitate and strengthen the UNESCO Club movement in the US. To that end, we have been successful in reaching out to our local, State and Federal leaders. On October 17, 2009 we were honored by hosting the Honorable Benjamin Cardin, US Senator as keynote speaker during our commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. During our summer camp, Camp participants had the oppor-tunity to visit the Frederick Board of County Commissioners in session during which our delegates received a warm wel-come following the presentation of a proclamation by the Honorable Commissioner Jan Gardner, president of the Fre-derick County Board of Commissioners. A similar meeting was scheduled with Mr. Robert Bruchney, Mayor of Hagers-town City who took the time to brief our campers about the history of Hagerstown before elaborating on how the City Government operates followed by a lengthy Question & An-swer session. As one of the only two UNESCO clubs listed by the US National Commission for UNESCO, we take our responsibility seriously and pledge to keep on working with all stakeholders to promote a new generation of peacemak-ers who are going to strive to make the culture of peace a
component of everyday life through education, science, culture and communication. The preamble of the UNESCO constitution offers a practical blue print in the following words:” since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed”. Building these defenses requires a team of passionate, dedi-cated and committed volunteers well aware of the fact that “…the wide diffusion of culture, and the education of humanity for justice and liberty and peace are indispensable to the dignity of man and constitute a sacred duty which all the nations must fulfill in a spirit of mutual assistance and concern” as also stated in the UNESCO Constitution. The Builders of the Universe program aims at providing the necessary tools to young people across the globe to be the needed agent for that change in their communities. I believe that our generation has the moral responsibility to quit com-plaining about all the tragedies and act. By acting, we will be putting an end to the powerless attitude while empowering to-morrow’s leaders with the best tools to be successful in spread-ing the seed of peace in the minds of their peers. The Builders of the Universe Program is all about nurturing an understanding of today’s World and ensuring that tomorrow’s leaders are globally literates and armed with adequate tools to carry out their assigned mission: building the defenses of peace in the minds of their peers, each mind at a time thru Education, Science, Culture and Communication. We appeal to Educators, Parents, Spiritual and Business Lead-ers and other Decision Makers across the globe, to take owner-ship of these simple ideas by sponsoring Delegates from their community to participate in our program. The help and support we received from all around the world has been vital in our quest to leave our world in a better and peaceful condition. I will like to thank Hood College and the Hagerstown Hotel and con-vention center for hosting the session. I will also like to thank the Potomac Fish & Game Club for its sponsor. Today, we are thankful to the City of Hagerstown, the City of Frederick, the Frederick County Government, Maryland State Representative Sue Hecht, The Permanent Mission of Brazil to the United Nations in New York, Counselor Moretti and Ambas-sador Maria L R Vioti, US Senators Benjamin Cardin and Bar-bara Mikulski and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley whose support has been instrumental in the successful implementation of the 2009 International Model United Nations Summer Camp. UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organi-
zation was founded on November 16, 1945. For this specialized United
Nations agency, it is not enough to build classrooms in devastated coun-
tries or to publish scientific breakthroughs. Education, Social and Natural
Science, Culture and Communication are the means to a far more ambi-
tious goal: to build peace in the minds of men
The Center of Peace, promoting the ideals of UNESCO, has been building strong alliances in the Washington, DC metro area since 2004. Major part-ners include the Frederick County Public Schools, Hood College, the Fre-derick Community College and the Maryland chapter of the United Nations Associations-USA.
We envision the center becoming a cultural anchor for the region, celebrat-ing community diversity, contributing on current issues and events, engag-ing policy makers, and working with all stakeholders to further understand-ing of peace and tolerance.
To promote understanding of UNESCO’s mission and ideas and to trans-late them into programs that will help raise a new generation of Peacemak-ers, placing Human Dignity at the center of their activities and striving to make the culture of peace a commodity of everyday life through Education, Science, Culture and Communication.

Every summer, UNESCO Centre for Peace brings
together, young people from around the world, for the pur-
pose of giving them the opportunity to learn, share and dream
together.
Together, they are able to share ideas, experiences, learn
and immerse themselves in different activities. Together, they
are able to travel to new places. Together, they are able to
help each other understand different perspectives. They find
friendship and peace. Then, it becomes their responsibility to
spread this message and share the Gift of Peace. They stay
in touch and continue the process of learning and unlearning
from each other.
The UNESCO Centre for Peace Model United Sum-
mer Camp is a simulation of the United Nations sessions. It is
unique since it brings together, young people from around the
world for the purpose of cultural exchange, dialogue and po-
litical discussions while visiting sites of historical importance
simultaneously. All delegates must prepare themselves for
the Model United Nations Sessions. Usually, delegates par-
ticipating in the Model United Nations Sessions are assigned
a country that they must represent at all times during the
Conference and while presenting their views on various is-
sues. Having been assigned a country, every delegate must
prepare him/herself in advance for the MUN Sessions.

In this class, campers are thought basic me-diation skills. They learn how to resolve con-flicts that occur in their relationships with their peers. Concepts such as animosity, dissent, anger, frustration, rage, disagreement, differ-ences of opinion, yelling, personal attacks, vindictiveness are addressed. Campers also learn how to identify, address and deal with difficult or toxic personalities and when to call for outside help.
Communication influences all factors of life and is a key component to achieving and maintaining peace. From daily interaction with strangers on the street to the way campers present themselves, the way they communi-cate is a reflection of who they are and the way they establish relationships with those around them. Although there are many sides of communications (including verbal interac-tions, nonverbal cues, and even using technol-ogy to maximize impact), there are a few basic fundamentals that span around the globe. By understanding the way others communicate, campers increase their probability for success with others.

In a world that is becoming borderless, the Center for Peace is signing a set of bilateral and multilateral agreements with schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions around the world to promote: • Students/Teachers exchange with U S Educational Institutions • Cultural & Educational Visits to the US and overseas. • Sister school agreements with US Schools, Colleges and Universities These exchange programs aim at: • Expanding students' international view • Helping students integrate with the world • Strengthening the relationship between Maryland educational institutions and overseas
schools, colleges and universities • Broadening the knowledge and understanding of students by enabling them to gain an un-
derstanding, appreciation and respect for other cultures • Developing opportunities for teachers to exchange course material, information on meth-
ods and practices and on educational matters in general • Facilitating visits of students and teachers to the sister school The premise of the program, as stated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1959, was that cities sharing similarities like population, industry or art would find ways to form partnerships which would create an international atmosphere of understanding and respect. Exchanged relationships can be established under a Memorandum of Understanding prepared under the auspices of the Center for Peace and signed by both parties. Once institutions are linked, several activities such as the teacher/student exchange and other cultural exchanges may be available to students and educators from both institutions. Benefits to Participants Broadening of educational horizons by adding a global perspective. Knowledge and experi-ence of a different education system. Possibility to have a direct impact in maximizing the edu-cational, cultural and sporting opportunities between young people from different countries. Through facilitation of international relations, young people can learn firsthand the differences and similarities in culture, education, personal values, personal interests and lifestyle. It is en-visaged that as the young people become more immersed in the sharing of culture, they will contribute actively to a more peaceful future through a range of initiatives.
