2009 SEASON PREVIEW

MOVING FORWARDYoung Team Begins To Grow Up; Looks To Push To New Heights

COACH KEISTER’S OVERALL OUTLOOK

“We will still have several different weeks of indoor practices in between our weekend trips and we must stay motivated during those times and continue to improve. Our goal is to be playing our best baseball during the end of the season and that has not happened the past couple years. We must be much tougher mentally than in the past to make that happen. After several years of having a lot of youth in our lineup and on our roster we finally have grown up some. Our older players must take responsibility for improving their individual game and mental toughness. We have not handled adversity very well in the past and must learn how to do that this year. The MCC is going to be very tough this year. A new conference format will have us play four teams four times and four teams just twice. We play the top three ranked teams from the preseason con-ference poll four times so we must come ready to play come conference time.

Pitching The Maple Leafs return eight pitch-ers who threw more than ten innings from the 2008 staff. Junior Kraig Miller had a team best ERA of 5.27 and three saves in limited innings – mostly out of the bullpen – due to his shortstop duties. Current senior Brad Elam led the team with 27 appearanc-es and three wins, pitching exclusively out of the bullpen. Juniors Aaron Coy and Shane Kurtz led the team in starts last year with 12 and 10, respectively. Others who threw significant innings are juniors Matt Fyfe, Joel King, and Caleb Kitchell, along with sophomore Zach Reed. Starter Ian Swartz and re-liever Mark Springer both graduated after filling significant roles on the staff as seniors. Returning from injury this year after a medical redshirt in 2008 is lefty Aaron Keister, who was part of the starting rotation as a fresh-man and sophomore. Freshman on the staff are Jason Crocker and Shane Davis, who both figure to log impor-tant innings immediately.

Keister’s Pitching Evaluation “We struggled on the mound last year to say the least. A team ERA of 8.85 is going to make it difficult on any offense. We have the potential to greatly improve on that mark this year for a variety of reasons. We will be adding three quality arms to the staff in redshirt junior Aaron Keister – who missed all last season due to an injury sustained midway through his sophomore season – and freshman Jason Crocker and Shane Davis who were both impressive this fall. Hav-ing these three guys in addition to the amount of returning innings we have should create a lot of depth and promote some competition within the staff for the top roles. Another advantage for the pitching staff this year is a full-time pitching coach in Gary Keister, who has devoted his full attention to structuring and supervising our entire pitching pro-gram. Obviously significant improve-ment from the pitching staff will be a key for the success of the 2009 team.”

Junior Aaron Keister

Infield The strength of the infield this year will be at shortstop where junior Kraig Miller begins his third year as a starter (.312, 5 2B, 6 HR, 37 RBI). Second base is being hotly contest by sophomore Adam Zehr and junior Zac Miller. Third base also has two viable candidates between a sopho-more and a junior with Zach Reed and Joel King, respectively. Freshman Garrett Cannizzo had an excellent fall offensively and is working at making the transition defensively to first base. Senior Brad Elam and freshman David Stoesz will also get some time there after the Leafs lost Darin Tronovich (.260, 5 2B, 1 HR, 21 RBI) to graduation.

Keister’s Infield Evaluation “We had a fielding percentage as a team last year of only .918. We have the physical ability to be much better than that this year, but we must be much tougher mentally and not allow one error to become two or three. Our pitching staff looks to be much improved, but they will not get lots of strikeouts so we must support them defensively. We have fairly good competitions going at several different spots from both an offensive and defensive standpoint. That depth should create season-long accountability at each

position, which was something we lacked last year. Kraig Miller put up some good numbers offensively last year and we look for those to improve again. His leadership in the infield will be just as important as his production numbers.”

Outfield Losing Ian Swartz to graduation is a significant loss as he was the top statisti-cal performer last year (.324, 17 2B, 3 HR, 33 R). However, depth in the outfield should be a strong point of this year’s team. Returning red-shirt senior Tom McDowell put together some decent power numbers last year (5 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR) and if he can put the bat on the ball with a little more consistency this year, he has the potential to be a quality part of the middle of our lineup. Sophomore Sean Doering stole a team-high 13 bases last year so he won’t surprise anybody this year. His speed was a big asset defensively, but he needs to remain consistent all season long of-fensively as a late season slump greatly affected what appeared to be an outstand-ing freshman campaign. Senior Greg Meyer transitioned to the outfield late last season and has worked extremely hard to be in a position to compete for playing time. Junior Matt Fyfe was very impressive in fall ball in the outfield after being a pitcher only his first two years. Junior Derek Swartz is back in the mix after a year away from baseball last year. Freshman Andy Swisher and transfer Jeff Gouker also will compete in the outfield.

Keister’s Outfield Evaluation “Competition in the outfield will be fierce this year. We have several returning players who had stretches of good play last year, but were not consistent all year long. With several other players hav-ing great fall seasons, the coaching staff will be able to ride whoever is hot when putting lineups together. Improved speed will help the outfield defense, which should be a valuable asset for the pitching

staff. Undoubtedly there will be lots of different combinations used in the out-field so leadership and positive attitudes will be important.”

Catching Sean Sears will be starting his third year as our primary starter behind the plate. His arm strength has been his strength the past two years and this year looks to be poised for a breakout season offensively as well. Freshman Garrett Cannizzo will back him up is addition to his first base duties.

Keister’s Catching Evaluation“Sean struggled though some injuries in the past and this year has worked hard to get his body in shape so he can handle the demands of catching a significant amount of innings. He had a breakout fall offensively and continues to look good this winter. Sean’s job is one of the most mentally demanding on the team and his ability to handle that aspect of the game will be crucial to his success offensively, the pitching staff’s success, and the team’s overall success. Cannizzo looks to be out catcher of the future and will continue to work hard at his skills behind the plate even though he will be playing a lot of first base.

Goshen CollegeBaseball Complex

Location: Immediately southeast of the Roman Gingerich Recre-ation-Fitness CenterBuilt: 1950’sCapacity: 500 in bleachersDimensions: 330’ down the lines, 398’ in power allies, 380’ to straight-away centerfield.

Originally built in the 1950’s, the Goshen College Baseball Com-plex has undergone many improvements throughout the years. Pine trees planted in the 80’s provide an intimate feel along with a valuable wind break behind the backstop and dugouts as well as an excel-lent hitting background beyond center field.

Around the same time, former coach Devon Hoffman also constructed the current press box and the batting tunnel, which features an all-weather turf floor.

In 2006, the infield was resurfaced making for one of the finest playing surfaces around, while a full-infield tarp was purchased at that time to help protect it. The field has unique dimensions of 330 feet down the lines, 398 feet in the power allies, and 380 feet to straight-away centerfield.

The home bullpen features a double barrelled mound and a full infield tarp was purchased in the fall of 2006. The whole field is watered by an electronic automatic irrigation system.

“Our playing field has matured into a nice little facility and our players work extremely hard after every practice and game to keep the mound and plate areas in top condition,” says head coach Josh Keister.

When the Maple Leafs cannot be outdoors due to the weather, they have the Roman Gingerich Recreation and Fit-ness Center to rely upon. Three full-size basketball courts allow plenty of room for long toss and the option of setting up a full-size infield. The gym also has two 80-foot long batting cages that drop down from the ceiling. The cages are big enough for pitchers to throw live to hitters from indoor portable mounds.

“Our indoor facility is one of the most spacious around,” Keister says. “It is extremely valuable for our guys to be able to long toss in the winter and to prepare for the type of throws they will have to make outside. Our playing field has matured into a nice facility and our playing surface is in outstanding condition, especially the infield. We are lucky to have such exceptional facilities.”

The team narrowly missed out on its first post-season berth since the ’95 season in the process, and captured just the sixth 20-win season in program history. A 2000 Goshen High School graduate, Keister graduated from Goshen College in 2004 with a degree in social studies education. He was a two-time All-Mid-Central Conference performer during his four-year career as a Goshen College player (2001-2004), and was an honorable mention NAIA All-American selection following his junior year. He and his wife of four years, Nina, reside in Goshen and are expecting their first child late in the spring.

COACHING STAFF

THE KEISTER FILES Josh Keister enters his fourth season as head coach of the Leafs in 2009, coming off a one-year stint as the team’s head assistant coach and a stellar four-year playing career at Goshen College. Keister, a 27-year old Goshen native, is the ninth head coach in the program’s 50-year history. He has experienced first-hand some of the best moments in Goshen College baseball, both as a player and a coach. Goshen’s 24-20 overall record during Keister’s senior 2004 season was the program’s first 20-win effort since 1995, while Keister made a firm stamp on the program’s record books: Keister holds the Leafs’ single-season records for batting average, hits, runs and RBI, and is the school’s all-time leader in runs scored (133) and doubles (44). His name appears as second-best in career batting average, hits, home runs and RBI. “I’m excited to lead a program that has been heading in such a positive direction over the last few years,” Keister said. “I really enjoyed my four years as a student at Goshen College, and it is my goal that future Goshen College baseball players will have as good of an experience.” As an assistant coach Keister was a major part of the Leafs’ success in

JOSH GLEASON – Assistant Coach Also the Sports Information Director at Goshen, Josh Gleason begins his first season on the Maple Leaf

coaching staff in 2009. A native of California, Gleason most recently was the Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Director of Athletics at Simpson University in Redding, Calif. In eight seasons as a player and coach, Gleason helped build the program from the ground up while leading the Red Hawks to two appearances in the NCCAA DII National Championships. As a player, Gleason’s best season was as a sophomore when he batted .385 – third highest in program history – and committed just one error, while playing every position on the infield. Prior to his time at Simpson, Gleason was a four-sport letterman at Vacaville Christian High School (Vacaville,

Calif.). A three-time all league selection in baseball (.420 career average), Gleason was also picked to the all league team in soccer twice. “I have a passion for the experience and growth of college student-athletes and am excited about this opportunity to develop young men on and off the field,” Gleason said. He retired last spring after 34 years as a junior high English teacher, freeing him to assume full- time pitching coach responsibilities. The elder Keister is a Goshen College alumnus who later received his Masters in Education degree from Ball State University. His previous experience as a high school coach was highlighted with a trip to the Regional Finals, and he was a member of a Little League Senior Division Indiana State Champion coaching staff. “I’m excited about being able to give my full time and energy to the GC pitching staff,” Keister said. “I look forward to instructing the pitchers in the physical, mental, and emotional aspects so that they can enjoy performing at their full levels of potential.” Gary and his wife of 33 years, Norma, reside in Goshen.

2008 SEASON REVIEW

In a sport where you can be successful just 30 per-cent of the time and be considered successful, the line between a win and a loss is extremely fine. It didn’t take long for the Goshen College baseball team to figure that fact out firsthand. A young Maple Leafs squad – just seven upper-classmen on the roster of 23 – started the season with a 5-14 mark. However, nine of those fourteen losses were by three runs or less, including five by just a single run. Goshen was literally inches away from a handful of additional wins. Perhaps it was never truer as when the Leafs faced off against NCAA DII Eckerd Col-lege in Florida. Down 7-1 early in the game, Goshen battled back and rallied to get back into the game. Already having scored five runs in the eighth inning, Tom McDowell doubled home what Goshen thought to be the tying run. However, the tying run turned into the final out of the inning as the base runner was called out for missing third base and Goshen eventu-ally fell 9-8.

The Leafs did not take long to respond from the adversity, though, as the very next day they split a double header with sister school Eastern Mennonite University. The two schools, along with Bluffton Uni-versity, gathered together in Florida to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the tragic bus accident that took six lives from the Bluffton Baseball family. Despite losing the first game of the three-game series in extra innings, Goshen responded with two straight to take the series and bragging rights. In the finale, the Maple Leafs hit grand slams in back-to-back innings as they powered past the Royals 12-5. After twelve games out of the state of Indiana – primarily against southern teams who had played up to 20 games at the time of the competition – the Leafs finally got their home opener on March 15th when they hosted Alma College. It turned out to be well worth the wait as senior Ian Swartz threw a complete-game shutout as Goshen won the opener 5-0. The Maple Leafs would use a solid start by Aaron Coy to complete the sweep with a 9-2 win in the nightcap.

The Leafs learned quickly that in baseball, little separates winning from losing

Page 35: 2009 Goshen College Baseball Media Guide

A week later, the season shifted towards conference play. With a new conference scheduling format and weather make-up rules, Gos-hen was forced to play ten games in five days on two occasions and the pitching staff was often worn thin by the constant changes in the schedule. The depth and experience of the rest of the MCC showed as the Maple Leafs struggled to find consistency and their complete game. One game, Goshen would get a solid pitching performance only to have its own bats go quiet.

The next game it would be the opposite and with such a fine line between winning and losing – es-pecially with the talent and depth of the MCC – you have to be on top of all aspects of your game. The Maple Leafs took advantage of some non-conference oppo-nents during some tough stretches of the season. Freshman Josh Yates and Sophomore Matt Fyfe combined for a no-hitter as Gos-hen swept away first-year program Great Lakes Christian and the Leafs outscored Indiana University Northwest 23-2 in a doubleheader

sweep. Goshen also used a three-run home run by Zach Reed to hold on for an 8-7 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph, which took its non-conference record to 10-12. In their final MCC series of the season, the Maple Leafs finally cracked the conference win column. In the series opener against Grace, sophomore Aaron Coy gave up just one hit – an infield single in the sixth – in a complete game 4-0 shutout. Goshen swept the doubleheader as they outlasted the Lancers 22-11 in a slugfest, which featured 12 extra-base hits. With an extra-innings vic-

tory at Grace, the Leafs claimed the seven seed heading into the conference tournament play-in series. Unfortunately, Goshen had to travel to Indiana Wesleyan where its season would end with a pair of losses. Swartz and junior Brad Elam were selected as All Mid-Central Conference Honorable Mention. Swartz led the Maple Leafs with a .344 average, while setting a new Goshen College single-season record with 18 doubles. Elam, a junior relief pitcher, notched a team-high three wins out of the bullpen, while pitching 37 innings and appearing in 27 ballgames.
