Spanish explorer Capt. Gabriel Moraga, traveled up the river he found as he moved inland out of the San Francisco Bay in 1808. He ventured to a point some 18 miles north of present day Colusa and named the river Rio del Sacramento. Formed by springs and snow melt from the southeastern slope of Mt. Eddy, just north of the town of MountShasta, theSacramentoflowssouthfor 382 miles before greeting the waters of the San Francisco Bay. At one of the bends in the river, Indians made their home for hundreds, some say possibly thousands, of years. During the high water flood stage, which occurs during andafter the winter rains, this particular stretch of riverside stayed dry as the muddy waters swirled by the high banks. It was also a good place to trap steelhead trout for which the Indians used weirs (dam-like traps). Mistaken for salmon by the first whitesettlersinthearea, thenettedfishgavethearea The Salmon Bend for a time. Teamsters hauling freight to the northern mines in the late 1840s stopped here because it was the only place in the 70 mile stretch of river where horses could be watered from the western bank. Legend has it that during the wet winter of 1872 a foothills rancherrodeaboatacross18milesoffieldsfloodedbythe unruly Sacramento River to reach Colusa. In the 1840s, the Indians came to be known by the white settlers. It is thought that the original pronunciation was Coru but the French explorers twisted the pronunciation and as the misnomer grew, the Indians themselves accepted the new name. The culture of the Colus was simple and the group generally peaceful, leaving disputes to be settled by the tribal chief.

They gathered nuts, berries, roots and caught waterfowl andfishfromtheriver.Theirlivesrevolvedaroundtheriver and the children often learned to swim before they

could walk. The population of the settlement wasaround1000atthetimethefirstsettlersarrived. In less than a generation, the Colus and their idealic way of life had passed from the scene. Blackberry brambles, grape and pear vines knarled through ancient, towering oaks and sycamores that hung over the river. Its mass stretched as far out as a mile from the river banks. Beyond, wild oats grew taller than men. The massive trees were gradually cut down and used to fuel the steam boats that were the main source of transportation prior to the arrival of

rail lines of the Northern Railway in the 1880s. Oddly, most of the lumber to build early structures in Colusa came from Puget Sound, Washington. It seems the native oak warped and was too tough to take the square nails of the day. By decree of the Mexican General Vallejo, one of the original 27 counties of California became Colusi apparently reflecting theGenerals thoughts on the plural of Colus. Cofounder of the town of Colusa- Will S. Green

thought Colusa had a nicer ring and so it is today. Green helped his uncle, C.D. Semple, survey and build the fledgling settlement that becameColusa. Semple paidJohn Bidwell $2000.00 for his Colus grant on January 22, 1850. Incredible as it seems today that purchase gave Semple control over 8875 acres!

Events Things to Do & SeeHunting fishing

    boating

A wide variety of hunting, fishingand boating opportunites are available in Colusa County from the Sacramento River to the East and the coast range mountains to the West. Colusa County is in the heart of the wintering area of ducks and geese. The ducks and geese begin arriving in late August and reach a peak in December and January. To see these concentrations of ducks and geese, one should visit the refuge sometime between Mid-October and early January. Hunting opportunities are provided on two national wildlife refuges and at a number of commercial hunting clubs. The Sacramento River between Grimes and Princeton is noted for its salmon, striped bass, steelhead and sturgeon fishing.Salmon start moving up the river in August, Kings migrating in September with the largest catches in October and November. Striped bass migrate in April, May and June. Sturgeon come up the river at the same time as stripers. East Park Reservoir is best known for its black bass fishing. There are 85 miles oftrout streams west of Stonyford and Letts Lake is a popular trout fishingspot. Opportunities for boating and water skiing may be found on the Sacramento River betwen Grimes and Princeton and at East Park Reservoir west of Maxwell. Owners of cabin cruisers and other powerboatersarefinding thata tripup the picturesque Sacramento River from the Sacramento Delta area,

Stockton, or San Francisco bay is a rewarding adventure because the river still has beautiful, tree lined banks for long stretches. Cruisers up to 40 feet in length can reach Colusa.

    Colusa sacramento state Park

In 1955 the city fathers of Colusa gave a 7-5 acre site to the state of California setting into motion construction of a river front park. When the park was formally dedicated in May of 1964, it boasted 63 acres of complete campsites, restrooms, parking areas, and boat launching and mooring facilities. Today it serves

thousands of recreationists each year. Carefully

The park features 5 acres of shade lawnforplayinggames.Bankfishingon the northwest river bank outside the park is popular or one can follow the trail to the parks gravel bar/beach area.

  • Colusa County Courthouse

Colusans are proud of their Southern architectural styled courthouse which is the second oldest in California. Built in 1861, the building reflects the roots of earlysettlers from the deep south. Inside in the main entrance hall is a marble statue of George Washington that was presented to the county in 1861 in recognition of the local c i t i z e n r y s o u t s t a n d i n g contribution to the Washington N a t i o n a l Memorial Fund. Colusa County contributed the largest proportional amount of any county in the country.

    sacramento Valleymuseum

Visitors to Colusa County can take a trip through time at the Sacramento Valley Museum located on 1491 E. Street (old Hwy. 20) in Williams. Housed in an impressive dome building that originally served the community as a high school, the museumreflectslifeinthevalleyoverthe last 100 years. Adjacent to the museum is a picnic area. Displays depict aspects of every day life through exhibits like an authentic 19th century general store complete with bolts of gingham, bins of grain, and stick candies. For the men, the saddlery and blacksmith shop offers an interesting contrast to todays modern power tools and means of transportation. A particular interest is the doll collection of Mrs. William Wyllie which illustrates the history of

fashion from before the time of Christ to 1927. The 19 rooms of the museum offer beautiful antique furnishings for the antique buff, early photographs of the area, legal documents and newspapers for the historian to peruse, and an educational experience for one and all. In a time when changes occur at a rampant pace, it seems very worthwhile

to glance back to a simpler time and remember our California roots. From April to November the museum is open W e d n e s d a y -Saturday from 10:00 am- 4:00 pm; Sunday

1:00 pm- 4:00 pm. During the winter months hours are

the same but the museum is open only Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The phone number is: 473.2978.

    sacramento Wildlife refuge Complex

Separate refuges are combined to make up this more than 42,000-acre complex. Three of the fiveseparate refuges in this complex are located in Colusa County: Colusa, Delavan, and Sacramento. The Colusa and Sacramento Refuges provide auto trails and routes that wind through the grasslands, marshes, permanent ponds and seasonal wetlands that make up the varied habitat. Many species of birds including pelicans, egrets, red tailed hawks, white- faced ibis, herons, grebes, northern barriers, and barn owls make their homes here. Hiking is permitted during daylight hours at Colusa and Sacramento River refuges. Hunting is permitted during the designated hunting season.

    China town

In March of 1979 the Colusa City Council passed a resolution designating a group of eight brick structures, located on Main Street, as historic, thus preserving the architectural integrity of the buildings. The buildings are unique in that they were the residential and commercial hub for Colusas Chinese population during the early part of this century. Overlooking the Sacramento river, this row nearly of identical structures underwent massive renovation and today is home to a diverse group of retail and office tenants. The resultbrings a new and interesting aspect to downtown Colusa. Originally restricted by custom and prejudice to reside and work in this section of town, the Colusan Chinese replaced old wooden buildings with these masonry structures in 1890. The building served a dual purpose of living quarters and a place to conduct commerce. Falling into decline, the buildings were used for a time as a storage depot and loading facility for produce grown on surrounding farms. In the last few years a resurgence of interest is focused on the buildings and the results are refreshing. Today many legends exist about the legacy of these turn-of-the-century structures. Stories of gambling, of a mysterious network of tunnels that ran under the city streets, stories that have been, no doubt, romanticized with the passage of time. What is known is that these buildings provide the only significant reminder of 19th CenturyChinese Cultural Heritage in this area and are a treasure that Colusa can be proudof.Acrossthestreet, youllfindthe Colusa Levee Scenic Park that lies alongside the cooling appeal of the Sacramento River.

    Arbuckle

Arbuckle is an unincorporated city best known for its almond orchards that was founded in 1875 and is the center of a rich, diversified agricultural area in Southern Colusa County. The community is located on Interstate 5 about 10 miles south of Williams. It is the place to turn to reach the Sacramento River at Grimes. Colusa County is among the top almond producing counties in California and 95 percent of Colusa Countys almonds are produced in the Arbuckle area. Other important commodities are rice, tomatoes, walnuts, and seed crops. The community has a high school and an elementary school which maintains a high educational standard. There is a public swimming pool, two community parks and a memorial park. A golf course is located in the oak shaded hills to the west. A branch office of Umpqua Bank is also located in Arbuckle. The community has a number of active fraternal, service, non profit, womens and youth organizations.

    City of Colusa

Nestled against the bank of the Sacramento River, the city of Colusa is the County Seat of Colusa County. Founded in 1850, the city was incorporated June 16th 1868.

Colusa is located on State Hwy. 20, about 10 miles East of I-5 at Williams and 27 miles West of State Hwy. 99 and 70 at Marysville Yuba City. The economic base of the community is agriculture. Rice, tomatoes, walnuts and their related processing and storage facilities is the major features of the area. In addition, a mechanical manufacturing plant and construction materials manufacturer are located here. Colusa Countys present courthouse, located at 6th and Market Streets, was completed in 1861 and is the second oldest Courthouse still in active use as the seat of County government in California. Colusa has wide tree lined streets, several parks, public swimming, tennis, golf, and other recreational facilities which make for pleasant living. Colusa-Sacramento State Park is located adjacent to the City.

    Grand Island Shrine

On State Hwy. 45 about 4 miles north of Grimes, is a Shrine that was erected in 1883 on the site where the first Catholic mass was said in Colusa County on May 2, 1856. This Shrine is still used for church services each year and is called the littlest church in the United States.

    Grimes

Grimes is the center of a rich farming district on what is known as Grand Island, an area along the west side of the Sacramento River south of Sycamore Slough. This area was the first to be settled and farmed to any extent in the early 1850s. The community grew at Grimes because this landing was one of the important points for loading river steamboats and barges. Grimes is situated on State Hwy. 45 about 14 miles south of Colusa and 13 miles east of Arbuckle. The major crops grown in the Grimes area are rice, tomatoes and seed crops. Also, Grimes is the center of a natural gas producing area. The community has an elementary school, County Branch Library, Post Office, and community church.

    Maxwell

Maxwell is the gateway to a fast developing recreational area in Northwestern Colusa County. Maxwell, an unincorporated city located on I-5 about 10 miles north of Williams, provides a gateway to discover the East Park Reservoir and Mendocino National Forest. Delevan National Wildlife Refuge is located east of Maxwell.

    Princeton

Princeton was founded in the early 1850s on the site of the old 16 Mile House which served wagon traffic on the road to the Northern Mines. It later became a major steam boat landing on the Sacramento River. In addition, Princeton, which is located on State Hwy. 45 about 14 miles North of Colusa, is the Colusa County

    Our Cities & Towns

  • gateway to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge which is located on the Princeton-Norman Road. Princeton is located near two private waterfowl hunting lodges in the Lambertville and Clarkville areas. Both a high school and an elementary school are located in Princeton. The community has two churches, a county branch library and a post office.

    Stonyford

Located in a picturesque valley in the mountains of northwestern Colusa County, Stonyford is the entrance to a recreation area offering opportunity for deer hunting, fishing, boating, camping and other outdoor recreation. The headquarters for the Stonyford Ranger District of Mendocino National Forest is located in this community. East Park Reservoir is 2 miles southeast of Stonyford. Also, Stonyford is the trading center for agricultural activities in a mountain area which is primarily devoted to cattle ranching. Fouts Springs Boys Camp is located west of the town at a site that was once occupied by a popular health resort and vacation rest spot. Little remains today of this spa which was founded in 1873 by J.F. Fouts who had a saw mill in this area. Stonyford was originally named Smithville for John L. Smith who in 1863 had settled the first town site which was on Stony Creek just north of the present community. Smith built a flour mill there in 1878, using water diverted from the creek to power the machinery. Also there was a three story hotel on the site. In 1890, the town was moved to its present location and named Stonyford. Each year Stonyford holds a rodeo early in May that attracts visitors from a wide area. The program includes a dance as well as arena events. Stonyford today has an elementary school, County Branch Library, Post Office, Sheriffs substation, and a medical clinic.

    Williams

First known as Central, Williams was later renamed to honor William H. Williams, who donated much of the land for the town site. Known for its bumper harvests of

rice, tomatoes, vine and seed crops as well as walnuts, and almonds, Williams is a friendly community spirited town that sits midway between the Sierra and the sea. With I-5 and its links with Southern Pacific Railway, Williams is the transportation hub of Colusa County. The landscape around Williams is especially beautiful during the spring rice planting when the fields are turned into shallow lakes and the sound of a myriad of musical red winged blackbirds fills the air. The cattle and sheep grazing fields turn an emerald green. A drive out of Williams on west Hwy. 20 or out of Maxwell on Maxwell-Sites Road (just to the north of Williams) will wind you up through the foothills of the coastal range and through some of the most beautiful, pastoral scenery to be found anywhere.

  • Colusa County is best known for its rice production. The county is well adapted to growing many agrcultural products and a number of crops have been tried in the county in recent years. Leading farm commodities in terms of their importance to Colusa County are rice, almonds, tomatoes, walnuts, seed rice and cattle. Colusa Counties principal crops are grown from March to November;however, the mild weather allows production of wheat and barley through the winter. Limited rainfall from April to October points up the importance of irrigation to agriculture in Colusa County and as a result thecountyhassomeofthefinestirrigationsystemsandpracticesinthenation. Prior to 1900, more than half of the county was planted to wheat and barley, but near the turn of the century production of these crops declined as the emphasis turned to irrigated crops. The availability of abundant water from the Sacramento River resulted in theirpromotionoflargescalewaterdevelopmentprojectsforirrigation.Develpmentwasnotconfinedto irrigation districts. One of the earliest forms of public improvement was the reclamation of swamp andoverflowlandsbymeansofleveesanddrains.

With a total of 738,000 acres in the county, there are more than 500,000 acres suited to farms, of which more than 164,000 acres are irrigated. About 250,000 of range land in the western part of the county are devoted to livestock production. The combination of ample water for irrigation, good growing weather and fertile soils has built a stable agricultural industry which supports the economy of the county.
