EscapE thEORDINaRY - If ONLY fOR a WEEKEND . . .The Tybee Island Pirate Fest began in 2005 with a small handful of individuals that were looking for a unique event to help boost visitation to the island in the off-season months. The first year was even more successful than the organizers, a non-profit called TybeeFest, even imagined it could be. With the support of many dedicated volunteers, The City of Tybee Island and its elected officials, the Tybee Island Tourism Council, and local businesses the event has grown in popularity each year.This years event is expected to be the biggest yet thanks to the sponsor-ships received and the addition of a small admission fee. The festival will be headlined by Southern Rock legends The Marshall Tucker Band, who couldn’t take the stage last year due to the rain. There will be even more activities for families, fireworks on Friday evening, and an amazing 10,000 sq. ft. tent under which the bands will play -- making this year’s event truly rain or shine.The festival grounds will encompass the entirety of the renovated South Beach Parking Lot by the Tybee Pier from Tybrisa Street to 18th Street.Of course, in its second year, this publication is again full of everything you need to know about the event. We hope that you find it useful and support the many Tybee Island businesses found inside.

In 2007, TybeeFest selected Bonnie Gaster and Jiggs Watson as their Pirate Queen and King. Bonnie is a well known real estate broker on Tybee Island for Prudential SE Coastal Properties. Jiggs owns Tybee Island Insurance and is the organizer of the wet and wild Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade. If you haven’t heard of it The Beach Bum Parade is an island-wide water fight parade that is held each May.

In 2008, TybeeFest selected Jimmy Price and Natalie Gordon as the Pirate Queen and King. Jimmy Price is well known on Tybee as the local Chief of Police. Natalie Gordon owns the Atlantis Inn on Tybee and also serves on the board of the Tybee Island Tourism Council.

In 2006, TybeeFest chose Gene Kindrick and Debbie Brady Robinson as their Pirate King and Queen. Gene was the longtime commander of American Legion Post 154 on Tybee Island. Debbie is a well known local artist and owner of the Atlantic Beacon Gallery and Hall of Frames. Debbie also serves on the board of the Tybee Island Tourism Council.

For the 1st Annual Pirate Fest event organizers reached out to Jack Flanigan to be their Pirate King and Jenny Orr for Queen. Jack owns The Crab Shack, which is an incredibly popular seafood restaurant on the island known as “Where the elite eat in their bare feet”. The Crab Shack will also host the Buccaneer Ball this year on October 8th. And yes, that is a real parrot he is holding in the picture. Jenny is the owner of Fannie’s restaurant on Tybee’s south end which directly borders the festival grounds and has a great view of all the action.

The 2009 Tybee Island Pirate Fest King & Queen will be officially crowned at the Buccaneer Ball on Thursday, October 8 at 7:30pm at The Crab Shack. This years honorees are Cullen Chambers as Pirate King “Scullen Bones” Chambers and Amy Gaster as the Pirate Queen Amelia “Mother of Pearl” Gaster. Each year the board of directors of TybeeFest, which produces Pirate Fest, choose two individuals from the local community to bestow the honor on who embody community involvement and the fun spirit of the festival.Cullen Chambers is well known on Tybee as the Executive Director of the Tybee Island Historical Society. So be warned he definitely knows where the bones are buried and maybe some treasure too!Amy Gaster co-owner of Tybee Vacation Rentals is an active member of the island’s business community. She is also a founding member of TybeeFest and one of the original organizers of the Tybee Island Pirate Fest.

Come on down to the Queen’s tent in the Thieves Market and help Queen Amelia raise money for the Tybee Ta Ta’s, a local breast cancer research and support group fundraiser. Queen Amelia will have custom made beads for sale that can be had for a $5 or larger donation. The beads bare the emblem of the “Pink Pirate Brigade – Ye loyal krewe of Queen Amelia” on the front and “Think Pink with a Pink Ribbon” on the back; and of course are on pink beads! Amy Gaster aka Queen Amelia is co-owner, with her sister Carrie, of Tybee Vacation Rentals and pink is their official color; and of course pink is also used to promote breast cancer awareness. The “Queen Mum” and 2007 Pirate Fest Queen, Bonnie Gaster, is a breast cancer survivor so this cause hits close to home. These beads are very limited in quantity and will serve as a great memento for attendees of the festival. Queen Amelia hopes to raise over $2,000 in donations for the Tybee Ta Ta’s fundraiser during the festival.

Do I have to pay for the $10 weekend pass?If you are over the age of 12 then you have to pay. • What if I am just coming for one day, not both days of the festival? The $10 weekend pass must be purchased even if you are just coming for one day. Think of it like you pay for one day and get the 2nd day for free! • What if I am just coming to see 1 band? The $10 weekend pass must still be purchased. It is still a heck of a lot cheaper than most other concerts. • What if I just want to bring my kids to the children’s events? The $10 weekend pass must still be purchased. But all children 12 and under are free! You only need a weekend pass to gain admittance to the festival area which will be staged in the South Beach Parking Lot from Tybrisa Street to 18th Street. Watching the parade is free; make sure to get a good spot because parade participants give out treasure all along the parade route to spectators. Of course, as always, you must pay to park on Tybee Island from 8:00am to 8:00pm.

Why Buy a 10 Weekend pass?This year’s Pirate Fest includes an admission fee for the first time. Since 2005, the events first year, Pirate Fest has been a free event. Pirate Fest is produced by not-for-profit organization called Tybee Fest, with just a handful of volunteers. Tybee Fest relies on donations and sponsorships to raise the large amount of money necessary to stage a quality event such as this. The event committee’s decision to begin charging an admission fee was extremely difficult to make. Unfortunately, due to the economy and the growth of the festival, sponsorships and donations alone could no longer fully cover the cost of producing a first class event. The decision came down to either cutting back on the quality of the event or charging a fee for admittance. So the decision was made to charge $10 for a weekend pass to the event; and to produce the best Pirate Fest to date! In order to help people understand the value they are receiving for their money here is a quick rundown of what you will receive for your $10. Also, in order to ensure that Pirate Fest continues to be a family friendly event, admission remains free to all children 12 and under!

What do I get for my $10 weekend pass?• The fee covers your admission to the festival area on the South End of the island for both Friday and Saturday. This includes unlimited in/out privileges so you can come and go as you please. (The Buccaneer Ball is a private event held on Thursday at The Crab Shack, the day before the start of the festival; and it is a separate charge.) • This year’s event will include a “big top”, a beautiful 10,000 square foot clear top tent, that will be erected to cover the stage and dancing areas. While this tent adds a major production expense it will ensure that the festival truly is rain or shine. The major entertainment portion of last years event was rained out and the tent will make sure that all bands will go on this year, including returning act The Marshall Tucker Band, who could not take the stage last year. The only way to get under the tent is with a weekend pass (or to be a child under age 12 –

The Treasure of Lefty the PirateLegend of the Tybee Bomb

In The Treasure of Lefty the Pirate - Legend of the Tybee Bomb we follow Kelly and Roger on their Pirate cruise to Lefty’s Island, a private island somewhere on the Atlantic coast. These two really needed a break. Their little motel couldn’t compete against the big new casino that they were contending against, and they ended up out of business. It was Kelly’s mother that bought them the Lefty’s Island Treasure Cruise, a trip she had taken many years before. She would always talk about Lefty’s Island wistfully, but she never gave details.

Lefty’s Island is not without its perils. In 1958 a midair collision sent a Cold War bomber over the island with heavy damage and a nuclear bomb in its belly. Fearing catastrophe if the plane crashed with the bomb onboard, the pilot ejected the nuke into the water off Lefty’s Island and landed his plane in nearby Savannah, Georgia. Fifty years later the bomb is still lost, but folks keep hearing mysterious explosions once or twice a week in the jungle on the island, so people are strongly discouraged from digging on the south end of the island where debris from the bomb have been found. Of course, that’s exactly where Kelly and Roger find themselves by the end of the play, being chased down by the Captain, following first mate Wilcox on the most dangerous treasure hunt of their lives.

What can be learned from such misadventure? Plenty, but we can’t spoil the ending for you now. Come see the play at the Tybee Gym from October 2-4, 2009!

The Next Adventure is THE MARSHALL TUCKER BANDS’s 22nd studio album and its 34th overall. Produced by founding member Doug Gray, the recording continues the tradition of mixing flavors of blues, country, pop, rock, gospel and jazz that has been the band’s trademark sound since first exploding out of the cauldron of Capricorn Records with it’s self-titled platinum debut album in 1973. Doug sings lead on seven of the ten songs including a Toy Caldwell’s weeper, “Why Am I Crying” and George McCorkle’s “Guitar Playing Man.” Doug’s daughter Gabrielle joins MTB guitarist, Chris Hicks, for a full-on country take on McCorkle’s “Love you that way.” Melvin Seal’s “Traveling Man” shows Chris Hicks and the band rocking out.

The band will perform over 100 headline shows in 2009 in support of The Next Adventure. “We like the studio but we love the road,” says Gray. “Playing for the fans who have supported us for the past 35 years is a privilege and we will continue to play as long as old and new fans come out to see us. We began as a bunch of guys who wrote some fun music together, and our dreams get fulfilled every time we hit the stage.”

THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND got its start in Spartanburg, S.C. when Gray teamed up with brothers Tommy and Toy Caldwell, Paul T. Riddle, George McCorkle and Jerry Eubanks. The band got its name from piano tuner Marshall Tucker whose name was found on a key ring in their rented rehearsal space, which Tucker owned. In 1972, they signed with Capricorn Records, the same label that guided The Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie, and others to national fame. MTB opened shows for The Allman Brothers in 1973, and the following year, they began to headline their own shows across America due to the platinum-plus sales of their debut album and powerful live shows, often performing up to 300 shows a year. In a Rolling Stone review of their 1973 debut, Lester Bangs said, “their debut album is a moving piece of work that bids to put them in the same league as the Allmans damn fast. It’s tight, smoking music, with sharp, ringing lead guitar work and sure vocals that are grittily felt but never strained. Music from the Carolina

Every once in a while, an artist emerges from the Deep South and bursts fully mature upon the blues scene. Eric Culberson is one of those few. His style is unmistakably authentic, energetic, and blessed with sex appeal and charisma. He is a breath of fresh air for the blues.

Eric hails from Savannah, Georgia, where he started out working the usual club circuit. Soon Eric and his band became a local phenomenon. It was just a matter of time before he was introduced to Bob Greenlee at Kingsnake Records. One trip to the Kingsnake studios in Sanford, Florida, and Eric was signed and recording his first Kingsnake release, “Blues is my Religion” which went to #24 nationally on the blues air play charts.

THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND recorded seven consecutive gold or platinum albums, a platinum Greatest Hits album and multiple hit singles for Capricorn before moving to Warner Brothers for six albums in 1979. Original bandleader and bass player Tommy Caldwell died from injuries suffered in a car wreck in April of 1980, Franklin Wilke was chosen to succeed him. When the Warner deal ended in 1983 Toy, George and Paul decided to retire from the road and transferred their interests to Doug and Jerry who co-led the band until Jerry’s retirement in 1996.

The current lineup of Doug Gray, Chris Hicks, B.B. Borden, Marcus Henderson, Pat Elwood and Stuart Swanlund continue to pack audiences into their shows to the delight of longtime fans and generations of new fans who have discovered MTB over the years. This lineup evokes the feeling of the original band, but is original in its own right, delivering dynamic performances night after night. Big Engine Tony Mikus is the founding member and charismatic leader of the band. He is an accomplished guitarist, extremely versatile singer, and an exceptional songwriter. Hans Oellerich first played with Big Engine back in 1995 when, at age 15, he got on stage at the legendary Crab Pot and jammed on guitar with the band. Born and raised near Detroit, Randy reveals the Motown influence in his nostalgic 60’s and 70’s classica; his move to Florida in the mid-80’s introduced the tropical, laid-back Jimmy Buffett element, with a little blues, rock and country for good measure, prouducing a well-rounded musical style with something for everyone.

Who and what are Mummers?To define them simply, Mummers are costumed entertainers welcoming in the New Year. Some of the earliest mummers date back to early Egypt, pagan Rome and Greece, England, Germany and France. Historically, Mummery has influenced customs and perpetuated many interesting traditions. Every nation had its festivals at one time or another,

each marked by parades and displays of fanciful costumes. All of these cultures passed along their traditions from generation to generation and eventually these traditions were brought to America by immigrants.

The Philadelphia TraditionThe tradition of Philadelphia Mummery started in the late 17th century as a continuation of the Old World customs of ushering in the New Year. Mummery in America is as unique to Philadelphia as Mardi Gras is to New Orleans. For example, the Swedes were Philadelphia’s first settlers. When they came to Tinicum, just outside of Philadelphia, they brought their custom of visiting friends on “Second Day Christmas”, December 26. Later they extended their period of celebration to include New Year’s Day, and welcomed the New Year with masquerades and parades of noisy revelers. Groups would travel from house to house, sing songs, and perform dances -- all to be rewarded with food and drink. By the 1870’s, what had been an uncoordinated group of neighborhood celebrations turned into an area-wide parade with two main groups of participants: Fancy Dress and

Comic clubs. The City of Philadelphia finally sponsored and organized the first official Mummers Parade on January 1, 1901.

Philadelphia Mummers of TodayThe Philadelphia Mummers of today total over 10,000 marchers. The parade is still held on New Year’s Day, with four distinct divisions: Comic, Fancy, Fancy Brigade and String Band. The Fancy Brigade division clubs also wear large, ornate costumes, and perform intricate dances and drills with elaborate props. Mummers String Bands are known, not only for the unique sound, but also for their elaborate costumes. Brilliant materials, glitter, sequins and feathers are all combined to make the showy costumes. Traditionally, band members, wives and friends made the costumes. Today, professional designers and costumers are utilized. In Philadelphia, the cost of costuming an average 64-piece band is between $30,000 and $80,000, with the captain’s costume costing as high as $10,000. There are eighteen String Band organizations in existence today. Every year, each String Band selects an annual theme, and debuts their new music and costumes in the Philadelphia New Year’s Day parade. People from the “City of Brotherly Love” know the excitement of a Mummers performance, but the Mummers also preserve that sense of nostalgia and tradition. Commitment to the community has always been one of the basic principles of Mummers clubs.
