Model revision in detail.The most important changes - K 1300 R, S, GT.

Drivetrain 1

The main aim in the drivetrain area was to increase supremacy while continuing to improve ridability and providing a fuller, more harmonious torque curve along with further improved drivetrain comfort. In order to achieve this goal, the capacity of all three models was increased to 1,293 cc. The result is a significant increase in output and torque. In the K 1300 GT, the maximum torque was also raised to 11,000 rpm.

In order to achieve the above goal – and thereby increasing riding pleasure – a range of changes were made to engine timing, the inlet duct and the shape of the combustion chamber, as well as increasing bore and stroke. Extensive measures to optimise engine management also resulted in a more harmonious response in partial load operation as well as making the throttle response more homogeneous and gentle across the entire engine speed and load range.

Drivetrain 2

In addition to the core of the engine, the periphery has also been optimised: a new air filter has been created, and the air intake ducts and the idle speed actuator have been redesigned. What is more, there is now a new smooth-running accelerator throttle with desmodromics (opening and closing movement), converting the accelerator throttle position even more precisely into forward propulsion.

The clutch and rear-wheel drive have been adapted to the increased torque. In so doing, the clutch was also optimised in terms of noise, precision, manual force and travel. As far as the gearbox is concerned, revisions were made to improve the smoothness and precision of shifting: the claws of the gear wheels were newly undercut, the shift fork now has a 3-point support to replace the previous 2-point support and the gear shift lever has been ergonomically and kinematically optimised at the pivot point as well as being fitted with a roller bearing.A new 2-level rubber drive shaft in the rear-wheel drive also contributes to the reduction of shift noise.

Drivetrain 3

The K 1300 S and K 1300 R have been fitted with a new silencer, for the K 1300 GT the interior structure has been improved. As well as making an important contribution to a fuller torque curve and thus improving ridability, this also creates a sound which is more powerful and full of character, while still being legal. In the K 1300 S and K 1300 R the use of an electronically controlled exhaust valve has made it possible to achieve a small silencer volume with a high level of exhaust gas throughput, so that the silencer in these two models contributes significantly to a much more dynamic visual appearance.

Model revision in detail.The most important changes - K 1300 R, S, GT.

Electrical system 1In the new K models an innovative generation of switches is used – the new basis for all future BMW vehicles. It is characterised by modern design and optimised ergonomics with reduced space requirements in conjunction with state-of-the-art MID technology (Molded Interconnect Design, printed conductors in the switch unit rather than individual wiring). The ergonomic improvement is initially noticeable in the fact that the switches point towards the rider’s hands, and are closer together than in the previous generation. This makes for greater operational reliability in spite of reduced handling size – even when the rider is wearing thick gloves. In this context several switches were also given improved positioning on the handlebar unit. The hazard warning light switch is now close at hand at the top of the left panel and the combined switch for headlamp flash and high beam is now positioned for more convenient operation within reach of the left index finger.Confusion between the horn and direction indicator switches is eliminated in the new concept by means of a design of each switch according to the “international standard”. The new combination of starter button and kill switch also prevents operating errors or attempted starts when the ignition is interrupted.

The altered technical design of these switches introduces the possibility to offer twice the number of functions as compared to the current system – an important element in the implementation of future equipment features. For example, the switches for heated grips and seat heating have been placed compactly for easy reach on the right-hand panel. The display of the switch position of the heating elements is now on the screen of the instrument panel.

Electrical system 3

In the K 1300 R and K 1300 S there is a newly designed rear light with LED technology which is striking both visually and in terms of technology. The “white” clear glass look immediately sets the rear light apart from its predecessor, giving it a more technical, modern and dynamic effect. The use of LEDs instead of conventional light bulbs ensures trouble-free and maintenance-free operation, extending the lifetime considerably.

Chassis

In the front section, the lower trailing arm of the Duolever is now made of forged aluminium. The resulting weight reduction helps optimise response.

The spring/damper settings are tighter than before, providing improved feedback. The rear swing arm has been slightly altered for the new optional ESA II (see p. 40).

The chassis geometry of the K 1300 S and K 1300 R has been optimised in terms of handling by means of changes to the steering head angle and caster. In the K 1300 S the rear tyre dimensions have been changed from 190/50 to 190/55.

Model revision in detail.The most important changes - K 1300 R, S, GT.

Some four years after its market launch, ESA can already be seen as one of the great innovative successes of BMW Motorrad. The possibility of adapting the chassis to varying surfaces, load conditions or simply the rider’s mood at the simple press of a button has proved to be extremely popular. This function is particularly important for tour riding but also for roadsters, where payload can have a much greater impact on ride response in relation to the total vehicle weight.

In order to demonstrate again the innovative expertise of BMW in the chassis field, the range of functions in the new ESA II has been further expanded. In addition to electrical damper adjustment at both spring struts and instead of only being able to adjust the strut base of the rear strut manually, electro-hydraulic adjustment of the spring rate of the rear spring strut is now provided. This allows simple, fast adaptation to the weight of rider and load not previously offered to this extent. The result is a new dimension of ride stability and excellent response in all conditions in terms of surface and load.

As before, the rider makes the adjustment to the bike’s load while stationary with the engine running. What is new is that the system not only adjusts the strut base (spring pre-load) but carries out an automatically harmonised and simultaneous adjustment of pre-load, spring rate and damping. On the next page a diagram of the system is shown. The technical implementation is largely effected by means of a plastic element (Elastogran ) which absorbs forces in combination with a conventional coil spring on compression. The lateral expansion of this element on compression is limited – depending on the setting – by means of the insertion of a sheath operated by an actuator . This is equivalent to the effect of a more powerful spring. The lowering of the rear on compression and the associated change in geometry is thus almost entirely prevented.

The vehicle is thus just as stable when fully loaded as when ridden by one person under the same conditions.

The number of possible settings and the display of the selected setting by means of helmet symbols in the instrument panel has been retained.

ESA I enabled the adjustment of damping at three levels during travel – Normal, Sport, Comfort. These three levels have been retained. Nonetheless, ESA II offers a fundamental innovation here:One press of the button not only changes the damping but also the spring rate setting to match. These means that the normal dynamic position is almost completely preserved.

This additional adjustment option was made possible by a more powerful actuator which can even alter the spring rate under load. This means that for every damping level the appropriate spring rate is available.

In the Sport setting, the normal position is modified for greater agility, i.e. the rear section is raised, the caster thus shortened, and it remains at this level regardless of load.

As compared to ESA I, the settings Sport / Normal / Comfort have been spread further apart in ESA II due to the new technology, resulting in the effects being more clearly felt while riding. Sport is therefore more dynamic and precise than before, and Comfort is more comfortable, while providing excellent ride stability.

ESA II offers the rider important functional benefits:

The static normal position (set with ESA I or conventional spring struts by means of spring pre-load) is retained much better in all settings dynamically, i.e. while riding.Compensation of all riding and load conditions, i.e. optimum riding geometry at all times.Clear change of vehicle character with each selected setting: comfortable without sagging or snaking, sporty without excessive hardness yet at the same time more agile. In relation to the spring rate set, the wheel load of the front wheel is retained since the rear stays at a stable level. Ride stability and steering precision are fully retained, braking stability is kept at the very highest level.Appropriately adjusting damping and spring rate across the entire adjustment range (i.e. damping is neither excessive nor insufficient). It is as if the rider did not notice how much weight he is carrying on the road.

Model revision in detail.The most important changes - K 1300 R.

Design:

The body of the K 1300 R is clearly differentiated from the predecessor model. The overall appearance is more masculine, more dynamic and more aggressive.

The new wheel carrier trim elements highlight a look which is more clearly oriented towards the front wheel. The new, more aggressive radiator trim demonstrates the increased output and its altered proportions provide maximum differentiation from the predecessor model. The intake trim element has been given a more masculine shape and is now painted, the side covers are not just visually new and more striking but also provide improved wind and weather protection at knee level (tear-off edge). The differently finished headlamp trim adds an additional change to the look of the front section.

Surface / paint finish design

Silk metallic Lava Orange metallic Light Grey metallic

In the K 1300 R the drivetrain is highlighted in sporty fashion with the consistently black engine and the frame and chassis which are given technical emphasis in Asphalt Grey metallic matt. Unlike the K 1200 R, the frame, wheel carriers and drivetrain of the K 1300 R are finished in the same colour in all three colour versions.

The distribution of the body colour emphasises the newly designed features and the character of the K 1300 R, i.e. the powerful front and slim rear. The program ranges from Silk metallic – an uncompromising, masculine colour – to the sporty, provocative Lava Orange metallic. The palette is rounded off with a newly interpreted, contemporary white –Light Grey metallic – which gives greater emphasis to the three-dimensional aspect due to its metallic element, unlike standard non-metallic white.

Model revision in detail.The most important changes - K 1300 S. Design.

The body of the K 1300 S in particular is clearly differentiated from its predecessor due to specific changes. Through the narrower design and harmonious details it comes over as lighter, sportier and more dynamic.

• Narrower when viewed from the front, therefore slimmer, greater impression of lightness

• Slimmer upper trim section, visually separated by means of matt black grained intake trim panel

• The integrated intake trim panel is a visual reflection of the increased engine performance.

• Recognisability: BMW “split face” (black middle section), lighter look, more dynamic

• Rain drainage slits for better view in poor weather

Surface / paint finish design:

Royal Blue metallic Red Apple metallic Magnesium Beige metallic

With the K 1300 GT, too, the current model can be immediately distinguished from its predecessor since the chassis and swing arm are finished in the new technical colour Asphalt as in the other two models. The cockpit has been enhanced by means of a high-quality finish in a matt, dark metallic colour.

The colour range offers something for both the rider with sporty ambitions (Red Apple metallic with dark contrast sections) and the supremely skilled tour rider: Royal Blue metallic with spoiler and rear in light White Aluminium metallic. An increase in elegance and modernity is to be found in the third version: Magnesium Beige metallic in refined contrast with Dark Slate metallic matt.

The paint finishes of the fuel tank side sections and the rear trim once again differ among the various body finishes but can no longer be varied through selection of special equipment features. The seat is now only available in black.
