In 2009 we served more visitors - 432,477 - than any year other than our opening year. Attendance was 11% higher than in 2008. We also enrolled more member families than any time in our history – 8,436. This represents an increase of 3% over 2008. All of this growth occurred during one of the worst economic slumps in our nation’s history. Parents and teachers clearly value what McWSC offers!

ReductionWhile we grew in attendance and memberships, we also experienced sharp declines in charitable giving. Foundations, businesses, governments and individuals had fewer funds to contribute. We responded to this challenge by reducing expenses. Each employee earning more than $40,000 a year took a pay cut on a sliding scale (from 14% to 1%). Administrative positions were eliminated. Vacant positions were not filled. The result was that we reduced expenses by over $566,000 – a nearly 7% reduction from 2008.

AdaptationServing more visitors with less staff pushed us to do things differently. We worked hard to combine our assets – programs, exhibits, the café and the like – to create unique science learning experiences. We introduced our new “Smart Café” (focusing on healthful food and nutrition information), and we saw a sharp increase in revenue. We expanded our camp-in program and our holiday day-camp offerings. The community responded enthusiastically to the new “Shark-Ray Touch Tank” (we had our best summer ever). Summer camps were sold out again, and Hollywood films brought in strong crowds.

The FutureIn 2010, and for the foreseeable future, we will continue to find ways to reduce expenses while INCREASING our value to the community. Where possible, we will accomplish this by partnering with others that share our mission. We hope YOU will be among those partners. The future belongs to those who can understand and use science and technology. Please join us in making this region’s future as bright a possible.

Gratefully,
