The past year was difficult for everyone, but particularly for small nonprofit agencies such as JBI. It was a challenge for us to meet the needs of the thousands of JBI clients around the world, but with your devoted support, the enthusiasm of our volunteers, and the dedication and creativity of the JBI staff, we succeeded.

By exercising fiscal restraint and controlling expenditures, we even managed to expand our outreach in Latin America, where JBI’s Hebrew/Spanish Haggadot, Talking Books and audio magazines of Jewish interest are reaching individuals and communities from Guadalajara to Buenos Aires.

Our Russian program was restructured in 2009 in the hope of finding and assisting more of those in need – here at home, in Russia itself, and in the Russian immigrant community in Israel.

In the U.S., local Talking Book Clubs continue to flourish, encouraging older adults to recapture the joy of reading despite vision loss. We also continue to expand our foreign language collections. In addition to our English books, JBI’s Spanish, Russian, Yiddish, Hungarian, Romanian, Polish and Hebrew materials are making their way into the hands of over 35,000 individuals of all ages in the U.S. and throughout the world. The JBI Children’s Low Vision Clinic in Tel Aviv has doubled the number of children treated annually, and our Mobile Screening Program for the Elderly reaches some of Israel’s most vulnerable people.

We are pleased to report that more parents of blind, visually impaired and reading disabled children are now finding JBI, particularly through the Internet, and are discovering how much JBI can do to help. To improve our visibility within the community so that we may reach even more students in need, and to better serve all our clients, in 2009 JBI completed a redesign of its nearly 10-year-old website. The new website provides up-to-date information and much easier access to JBI’s services. We hope you will visit us at www.jbilibrary.org.

I want to assure you that JBI has been conducting itself in a very prudent manner in accordance with the constraints of today’s economic realities. So far, we have succeeded in reducing expenditures without diminishing the effectiveness of our programs. It is my pleasure to recognize the assistance of JBI’s devoted and generous donors in the pages that follow. On behalf of JBI’s Board of Trustees, its staff, and all those whose lives are enriched by JBI’s services, I thank you most warmly once again for your heartfelt interest and support. With your help, we are able to accomplish so much.

A recent note received by our library staff from the daughter of Frances S., a JBI subscriber who lives in New York —

And from the President of the Comunidad Hebrea de Guadalajara in Mexico —

This has been an incredible service for my mother. She always loved to read. After she lost her vision, my dad used to read things to her, but he died last year. The ability to “read” through JBI talking books and magazines has helped to fill many empty hours for her. In addition, the inability to read left her out of conversations people were having. She is now much more able to participate. I was with her recently when people were talking about books, and she had been able to read them through your service. That enabled her to participate fully in the conversation, and helped her to enjoy the interchange, rather than be depressed and feel isolated.

Sincerely, Laura S.

On behalf of the Jewish Community of Guadalajara, I want to thank you and the JBI for sending us several Passover Haggadot for the visually impaired. This year in the Community Seder, for the first time, our members with poor eyesight could read the Haggadah together with the rest of the congregation.

We acknowledge and are inspired by the work your institution does, and it gives us strength in our daily challenge of sustaining Jewish life in communities small in number but large in spirit as ours.

With warm wishes, Mark Moel

And from a Hebrew School Director of Education in Wantagh, NY—

And from the sister of a JBI subscriber in Croftby, Australia —

And from a JBI subscriber who is a Russian immigrant and lives in Chicago, IL —

Letters of Thanks to JBI

Brooke had a very successful year in our 3rd grade Religious School last year due in large part to her having the materials in Braille that you made available for her. I truly appreciate you doing this for her.

Sincerely, Deanna P.

Thank you for sending Edie the library material over the years. As her twin sister, I know how much she deeply appreciated them. She gained so much enjoyment and interest from these materials which she so needed. She was delighted to be able to share in her “Jewishness.”

With sincere appreciation, Anne P.

I just returned home from a long stay in the hospital. It was so nice to find JBI audio books waiting for me at home. People like me who can’t see well depend on your books to feel connected to the outside world and the Jewish community. Thank you so much for all you do.

Sincerely, Aleksandra S.
