Dear Friends and Colleagues:

It is my pleasure to share with you the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation 2009-2010 Annual Report, which details this year’s accomplishments. While our economy – both nationally and locally – continues to struggle, our Foundation works to secure added resources and to distribute them to students in need. As you may expect, the need is greater than ever. Enrollment at the ten Maricopa Community Colleges increased again this year. More than 125,000

students registered at the start of the fall 2010 semester. This year, the Foundation raised $3,008,411 and awarded $1,884,796 in scholarships to 2,779 students. Due to the significant enrollment increases, coupled with current economic pressures, our new challenge is to step up our fundraising efforts.

I want to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board members and our staff for all their hard work. I especially want to thank Mr. Steve Schenk, our former Executive Vice President and COO, who retired this summer after nine years with the Foundation. Steve played a significant role in helping transform the Foundation into what it is today, and we are a better organization because of his efforts. Finally, I want to welcome Ms. Mary O’Connor to the Foundation staff. Mary is a worthy successor to Steve, and we are fortunate to have her with us.

With your help and support, we hope not only to meet but to exceed our fundraising expectations. Together we will effect change in our education environment and provide hope to those students who otherwise would not have the means to further their education. Thank you for being our partners in making dreams come true, one student at a time.

Dear Friends:

It is truly hard to believe that another year has passed. For the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation, it was an eventful year and as we begin 2010-2011 the same promises to be true. The numbers in this annual report tell some of that story, and in this message I want to share some things with you that are “beyond the numbers.”

In the year just completed, the Foundation developed a comprehensive strategic plan to guide our work. And as the new year has begun, we have completed a companion activity, a

“visioning exercise,” to focus us on needs in our community that can be met by the Maricopa Community Colleges and on raising money to help support the efforts to meet those needs.

As the year ended we celebrated - with mixed feelings to be sure - the retirement of Steve Schenk. As both CEO and our Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Steve provided leadership to the Foundation for nearly a decade and had a profound and positive impact on us as an institution. We are excited for him as he enters a new phase of his life and career, but we miss his talent, skill and dedication. And as the new year has begun we are pleased to welcome Mary O’Connor to the Foundation as our new Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Mary comes to us from Michigan with a record of success as both an administrator and fund-raiser. Beyond that she brings excitement, enthusiasm and energy to our organization. We wish her a long and successful career with our Foundation.

As I write this, we are also anticipating the retirement, at the end of the calendar year, of our long-time Vice President for Development, Ray Weinhold. As with Steve, we look to Ray’s retirement with mixed feelings. After a decades-long career as an educational and fund- raising leader in the valley, Ray has more than earned some “R and R.” However, we will miss his years of accumulated knowledge and wisdom as well as his considerable skill. We’ve already begun a process to find a worthy successor and hope to be able to announce that after the first of the year.

With all the change that may be going on some things remain constant, none more so than our thanks to all of you who have, once again, so generously supported our Foundation, our colleges and, most importantly, our students. Enrollment continues to grow and student need continues to grow. Your support is more important than ever . . . and deeply appreciated as always.
