Constructed in 1970 for a cost of $3.1 million, the Bison Sports Arena was built to house the Depart-

ment of Athle cs and the Department of Health, Physical Educa on and Recrea on. With a sea ng capacity of up to 6,000 fans for college basketball games and wres-tling matches and 2,200 for indoor track and fi eld meets, the Bison Sports Arena has hosted several premier events. The arena hosted NCAA Division II na onal wrestling championships in 1971, 1976, 1983, 1991 and 1997, many North Central Conference and high school state in-door track and fi eld championships, the fi rst two NCAA Division II na onal indoor track and fi eld championships, and one NCAA vol-leyball championship. The Bison Sports Arena also housed the 2008 NCAA Wrestling West Regional, the fi rst postseason Division I wrestling event to be held at NDSU. The Bison wrestlers have the luxury of a fi rst-class prac ce facility on site. A generous dona on from Bison wres-tling booster John L. McCormick led to the

The Bison Sports Arena measures 320 feet wide and 48 feet high. Its 150,639 square feet of space is divided into three levels. A main fl oor of 102,000 square feet includes a wood basketball fl oor and an all-weather ar fi cial surface for basketball games, track meets, wrestling meets, tennis and volleyball matches. Maughan Quick FactsAge: 68Born: March 21, 1941Hometown: Canonsburg, Pa.College: Minnesota State MoorheadGraduated: 1964Compe on: Two- me NAIA na onal champion at

head, 1964; M.S. in educa on, NDSU, 1966.

When it comes to North Dakota State, it is nearly impos-sible to talk about the success of the athle c programs without the focus of the conversa on turning to Bucky

Maughan. His four na onal championships, 30 individual NCAA champions, and 17 conference tles are nearly unrivaled in col-legiate athle cs.

Maughan begins his 46th season as the head wrestling coach at NDSU with an overall record of 448-146-13. He now leads the Bison into their third season of Division I compe on.

Since joining the ranks of Division I, Maughan has coached six NCAA qualifi ers.

Under Maughan’s guidance, the Bison captured NCAA Division II na onal cham-pionships in 1988, 1998, 2000, and 2001, while fi nishing as the na onal runner-up six mes (1972, 1982, 1983, 1992, 2002,

and 2004) and placing third six mes as well (1973, 1984, 1987, 1989, 1993, and 1995).

A constant in the Division II na onal rankings, NDSU had 32 fi nishes in the top 10, including a string of 15 straight seasons from 1981-1996. The Bison have also fi nished in the top fi ve 27 mes since Maughan took over the program in the 1964-65 sea-son.

During NDSU’s 40-year affi lia on with the North Central Con-ference, Maughan helped produce 88 NCC individual champions, including four- me champs Brian Kapusta and Steve Saxlund. Maughan has coached over 150 All-American wrestlers and two U.S. Olympic team members in Brad Rheingans and John Mor-gan.

In 2003, Maughan received perhaps the highest honor of his impressive career when he was inducted into the Na onal Wres-tling Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Division II Wres-tling Hall of Fame in 1997, being joined by Bill Demaray and Rhe-

ingans, two of Maughan’s na onal champion wrestlers.

A former Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestler, Maughan won two na- onal championships in the same year. He won the 1963 NAIA 123-pound tle, fol-lowed up by capturing the NCAA Division I 115-pound championship. The NAIA cham-pionship was the second of his career, having also won the 1962 championship.

Maughan’s championship days began early while growing up in Canonsburg, Pa. He was a state high school champion and won 70 consecu ve dual matches during his high school career.

He has also stayed ac ve on the administra on side as well, serving me as a member of the execu ve commi ee of the Na- onal Wrestling Coaches Associa on and is also a former presi-dent of the NCAA Division II Coaches Associa on.

Maughan and his wife, Leota, are the parents of two sons who also have wrestling in their blood.

Jack was a two- me Division II All-American wrestler at North Dakota State and was the head wrestling coach at Western Wres-tling Conference rival Northern Colorado for 20 years before step-ping down prior to the 2009-10 season.

Bret was a two- me All-American as well as a na onal runner-up at 118 pounds for the Bison in 1991 and is beginning his ninth season as assistant coach to his father at North Dakota State.

Young Bison squad looks to contend in tough WWCThe 2009-10 North Dakota State wrestling team will look to

improve on last year’s 5-10-1 overall record and 2-4 mark in Western Wrestling Conference ac on. “It’s the beginning of a new era,” said head coach Bucky Maughan. “We’re not an established Division I power, so it’s been hard trying to get those elite recruits, however, we are making progress and will be able to turn things around.” Maughan has nine true freshmen on this year’s squad, along with fi ve redshirt freshmen. The Bison graduated two starters in Adam Aho and Gabriel Mooney, but will look to lone senior Ryan Adams, a two- me NCAA qualifi er, to lead the team this year. The Bison also return seven regular starters from last year’s squad. Maughan is excited about the addi on of Roger Kish to the coaching staff . Kish was a two- me All-American and NCAA runner-up at Minnesota before gradua ng in 2008. “He was a great college wrestler out of one of the country’s top programs and has brought in some new training methods,” said Maughan. “He’s a great help, especially in the upper weights. Since he’s from Michigan, he’s also helping to expand our recrui ng area.” Last year, the process for qualifi ca on into the NCAA champion-ships changed. Wrestlers now are ranked on a power index, which takes into account the number of ranked wrestlers performed against as well as the results of those matches. The same system, with minor tweaks, will also be in place this year. The Bison will have plenty of chances to improve their shot at the NCAA Championships due to the challenging slate the coaches have put together. NDSU will face off against Big 12 champion Nebraska as well as Pac-10 champion Boise State this year. Both teams fi nished the 2008-09 season ranked in the top 10. “This schedule is extremely demanding and we made it as tough as we could,” said Maughan. “We have to wrestle quality opponents in order to help our athletes in their quest for na onals.”

Over the course of the season, the Bison will wrestle four teams from the Pac-10, two CAA teams, and one team apiece from the MAC, ACC and Big 12. The Bison will kick off the season with the Daktronics Open Nov. 7 and the Bison Open Nov. 14. NDSU will also compete in the Kaufman-Brand Open and the Dragon Open before star ng dual ac on. The Bison will host the Dakota Duals on Dec. 13 and wrestle against Northern Illinois, Oregon State and MSU Moorhead. A er winter break, the team will hit the road for most of January, traveling all across the country. On Jan. 3, the squad will travel to Lincoln, Neb. and take on North

Carolina State as well as host Nebraska. The Bison will then head to California for matches against Cal State Ful-lerton and Cal Poly. The team will then compete against Boise State in Bozeman, Mont. on Jan. 15. Western Wrestling Conference ac on will begin with a match at Northern Colorado on Jan. 17. The Bi-son will then travel to the Northeast for matches against Boston University and Sacred Heart. The Bison will host Air Force on Jan. 31 and Wyoming on Feb. 7 in WWC matches and then travel to Northern Iowa, the defending conference champion, on Feb. 14. NDSU will close out the regular season at home against South Dakota State Feb. 18. The NCAA West Regional will be held in Brookings, S.D. on March 6.

125 pounds Sophomore Jus n Solberg will look to con nue the success he had at the end of last season. He fi nished third at the NCAA West Regional a er pos ng a 4-2 record in dual meets. Solberg could also poten ally wrestle at 133 pounds. Freshmen Phil Levine, an NHSCA All-American, and

The 2008-09 Bison were a young squad with four freshmen cracking the star ng lineup. NDSU fi nished the season with a 5-10-1 record and a 2-4 mark in the Western Wrestling Conference, good for fi h place. The team hosted the Bison Open to kick off the season and sophomore Kenny Moenkedick won the squad’s only tle of the day at 184 pounds. At the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 22, senior Gabriel Mooney took third at 141 pounds and junior Ryan Adams was third at 149 pounds. The Bison opened dual ac on at the Northern Quad on Nov. 29. A er shu ng out Portland State, 36-0, NDSU was beaten, 36-6, by No. 11 Minnesota. In the fi nal match of the day, NDSU ed Northern Colorado, 19-19. It was the fi rst e for the Bison since a 19-19 draw with South Dakota State in the fi nal match of the 2006-07 season. Moenkedick was the only Bison to win all three of his matches. The team then traveled to the Las Vegas Invita onal where they fi nished 31st of 44 teams. Dual ac on resumed as the Bison hosted Dickinson State and No. 2 ranked Iowa State. The Bison dominated Dickinson in a 40-3 win, but were shut out by the Cyclones, 42-0. A er winter break, the Bison headed east for the Virginia Duals. NDSU opened with a 33-3 loss to Penn before dropping a 35-7 decision to Rider. The team closed out the Virginia duals with a 27-16 loss to Ohio. The Bison returned to Fargo and lost to Augsburg, 22-18. The match was up in the air un l the 197 bout when Augsburg’s Jared Massey pinned Drew Ross to clinch the win for the Auggies. NDSU was embroiled in another ght match a week later. A er tying Northern Colorado earlier in the season, the two teams faced off to open Western Wrestling Conference ac on this me. The Bison had a 16-12 lead going into the fi nal bout of the day, but UNC’s Ryan Johnson pinned Moenkedick at 184 pounds to give the

Bison fi nish fi fth in Western Wrestling Conference

Bears an 18-16 win. The Bison broke a six-match losing streak with a 23-17 win over Air Force before falling to Wyoming, 31-6. Back at the Bison Sports Arena, NDSU defeated crosstown rival Minnesota State Moorhead, 22-17. Later that night, the Bison took on Utah Valley. With the score ed at 15 apiece going into the heavyweight bout, Utah Valley’s Diego Avalon used a second period takedown to claim a 3-2 victory over Tyler Hemmesch and give the Wolverines an 18-15 win. The Bison then dominated South Dakota State, 36-5, in Brookings.

In the fi nal home match of the season, NDSU jumped out to a 17-3 lead on No. 21 Northern Iowa, but the Panthers won the fi nal fi ve bouts en route to a 21-17 win. At the NCAA West Regional, the Bison came in fourth as Adams fi nished second, while freshmen Tyler Johnson and Jus n Solberg came in third. Northern Iowa won the tle for the 27th straight year. Adams just missed out on an automa c bid to the NCAA championships. He lost the tle bout to Mitchell Polkowske of Northern Colorado and then fell to Trevor Ki elson of UNI in the true second place match. Adams earned All-Western Wrestling Conference second team honors for the second straight year, while Johnson and Solberg both earned third team accolades. Ten members of the team were named to the WWC Coaches Honor Roll, which recognizes all student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 GPA.

Tyler Johnson came on strong in his freshman year. He earned third-team All-Western Wrestling Conference honors a er entering the star ng lineup in January.

Senior Gabriel Mooney reached the 20-win mark for the Bison in 2008-09. He tallied 78 wins in his career at NDSU.

The Western Wrestling Conference The Western Wrestling Conference, an NCAA Division I wrestling-only alliance, will begin its fourth season of compe on in 2009-10. The WWC sent 13 wrestlers to the 2009 NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis and saw two wrestlers earn All-America honors. Northern Iowa’s Moza Fay earned his second straight honor while Wyoming’s Joe LeBlanc earned his fi rst. The 2009 NCAA West Regional, which was held at Northern Colorado, served as the conference tournament for the third straight season. UNI was crowned the team champion, while Wyoming head coach Mark Branch was named the league’s Coach of the Year. The 2009 NCAA West Regional will be hosted by South Dakota State Universyt. The goal of the league is to replace the West Regional with a conference tournament, which would then serve as the NCAA qualifi er. The WWC enjoyed plenty of success in its inaugural year of compe on, which included sending 19 wrestlers to the 2007 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The fi rst WWC tournament took place under the tle of NCAA West Regional on March 3 in the McLeod Center on UNI’s campus. The 2007 West Regional served as the fi rst na onal qualifi er for three schools making the move from Division II to Division I. North Dakota State, South Dakota State and Northern Colorado all sent wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the fi rst me since reclassifying to Division I. Utah Valley will be eligible for the postseason in 2009-2010.

With league members spread out over six states and two me zones, schools will only be required to compete against four league schools in dual ac on to be eligible for the regular season conference championship. Schools will be encouraged to schedule as many conference schools as possible. The WWC recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and full-season basis. Individual awards include Wrestler of the Week; All-Conference; Academic All-Conference; and Wrestler, Newcomer and Coach of the Year awards. The league also crowns a team champion following the conclusion of the regular season conference compe on and the postseason tournament. The governance of the Western Wrestling Conference will remain primarily with the member ins tu ons. Scheduling of contests, assignment of offi cials and certain media rela ons func ons will remain with member ins tu ons. One of the major benefi ts of having a league spread out so far is the added exposure – both in terms of media and recrui ng - in new des na ons. The conference affi lia on is also expected to generate much interest within the seven schools’ substan al alumni base, which numbers nearly 800,000 combined. Charter members of the Western Wrestling Conference include: the United States Air Force Academy, North Dakota State University, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Northern Iowa, South Dakota State University, Utah Valley University and the University of Wyoming.

NDSU AT A GLANCE

North Dakota State University is a “place of impact” and an ins tu on with both success and momentum. With growth to more than 14,000

students and annual research expenditures topping $100 million, NDSU has enjoyed a remarkable period of achievement. Shortly a er former president Joseph Chapman’s arrival on campus in 1999, he challenged each college and department to advance to the next level. The results have led to increased educa onal programs, greater research opportuni es and a growing, prosper-ing university. During this extraordinary de-cade, NDSU’s growth has meant an addi onal $1 billion to the state’s economy. There also has been tremendous growth in facili es in recent years, and two downtown Fargo buildings have joined the NDSU com-munity. The former Pioneer Mutual Building is now Richard H. Barry Hall with offi ces and classrooms for the College of Business and the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics. The former Lincoln Na onal Life Building became Klai Hall and has been reno-vated into studio space for the Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

As the Land Grant ideal man-dates prepara on for society’s changes, NDSU is preparing students for and assis ng business with the global marketplace. The state, na on and world can expect more in the years to come. NDSU has used these fi ve themes in its transforma on: “It’s About People,” “Students are Paramount,” “Programs,” “Leveraging Support” and “Stature.” Three qualita ve prin-ciples are being added: “Inclusive,” “Respon-sive” and “Excellent.” Looking to the future, the university has outlined several goals, including: • NDSU will further raise the caliber of its research enterprise. • NDSU will be among the top 15 com-puter centers in the world, with compu ng power approaching 100 terafl ops. A terafl op is a compu ng speed equal to one trillion fl oat-ing-point opera ons per second. • NDSU will con nue to be one of the leading agricultural research programs in the world.

• NDSU will make advancements in the arts, humani es, health sciences, material science and science, and engineering and mathema cs educa onal programs. • NDSU will become one of the top 100 universi es in the number of Na onal Merit Scholars enrolled.

NDSU: yesterday and today The state’s fi rst land-grant university was established as North Dakota Agricultural College on March 8, 1890, and organized for educa onal work on Oct. 15, 1890. President Horace E. Stockbridge and a fi ve-member faculty welcomed the fi rst class of 30 students as they took a winter agricultural course. Old Main, the campus’ landmark building, was completed in 1892. Renamed in 1960 as North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Science, the ins tu on educates students for a mul -tude of career opportuni es. The university is

comprised of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources; College of Arts, Humani es and Social Sciences; Col-lege of Business; College of Engineering and Architecture; College of Human Development and Educa on; College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Sciences; College of Science and Mathema cs; College of University Studies; and College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies. NDSU now off ers 44 doctoral programs, 59 master’s programs, an educa onal special-ist degree and eight cer fi cate programs. Students work closely with NDSU’s chem-ists, engineers, architects, musicians, pharma-cists, writers and other respected faculty who frequently are on the leading edge of research in their chosen areas. As of fall 2008, the university had 740 members of its instruc onal faculty, including 523 who have achieved the highest degrees in their fi elds. The NDSU’s primary academic campus includes 42 square blocks and 102 university buildings, 11 non-NDSU buildings, nine leased buildings and seven leased spaces, with build-ing, personal and outdoor property insured for a total value of $834 million. In all, NDSU is located on 18,746 acres of North Da-kota land, which includes the main Agricultural Ex-periment Sta on at Fargo. There are 268 Agricultural Experiment Sta on build-ings and storage facili es at the main sta on and eight research exten-sion centers across the state, and 18,488 acres dedicated to agricultural research. Dedicated to out-reach eff orts, the NDSU Extension Service conducts a rigorous educa- on program in agriculture, human develop-ment, nutri on and youth and community de-velopment through its county, area and state staff . During the fi scal year ending September 2008, the Extension Service’s ambi ous 4-H Club ac vi es, day camp and a er school pro-grams involved more than 27,170 face-to-face contacts with North Dakota young people. A total of 7,086 youth are ac ve in organized 4-H Clubs. During the same period, the Extension Service had 536,614 face-to-face contacts with adult learners across the state. Members of NCAA Division I, the talented Bison athle c teams have enjoyed a long tradi- on of excellence. The student-athletes com-pete in fi rst-class facili es—the Fargodome, Newman Outdoor Field, Ellig Sports Complex and Bison Sports Arena.

An energe cstudent body The NDSU stu-dent body is a talented, dedicated and enthusias c blend of interna onal and ethnic backgrounds. During the fall of 2008, undergraduate and gradu-ate students came from all 53 North Dakota coun es, 46 other states and the District of Columbia. The university currently has more than 960 interna onal students from 81 countries. NDSU has bilateral student exchange agreements with ins tu ons in Australia, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Korea, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. There also are memorandums of understanding with other countries such as Belize, China, Malaysia and Thailand.

NDSU students fi nd it is easy to make friends and get involved with campus life. They can par cipate in more than 200 student organiza- ons to develop personal and social rela onships, explore new ideas, learn about peo-ple from around the world and augment their course-work. The groups focus on academics, special interests, service, performing and visual arts, religion and recrea on. There also are intercultural groups, honor socie es, fra-terni es and sorori es.

Fargo: a great place to live, work and study

The home of NDSU, Fargo is a bustling metropolitan area that is o en listed as one of the best places to live in the country. Named an All-American City by the Na onal Civic League in 2000, Fargo-Moorhead is the largest community between Minneapolis and Sea le. About 187,000 people make their home in Cass and Clay Coun es. Accolades for the community come from a variety of sources. For instance, Forbes.com listed NDSU and Fargo as number fi ve in an ar cle called “Top College Towns for Jobs.” The research used U.S. metropolitan sta s cal area data and examined job growth using data from Moody’s Economy.com. A report from the American Lung Associa- on names Fargo-Moorhead as the best city

for ozone pollu on, short-term par cle pollu- on and long-term par cle pollu on. Fargo-Moorhead has topped a list of 72 areas studied by Earth Day Network and ranked for environmental health. Researchers looked at more than 200 indicators, with Fargo the best in air quality, drinking and surface water, and toxins and waste. In addi on, Fargo-Moorhead ranked 15th on the “Best U.S. Ci es for Job Growth” pub-lished on NewGeography.com.

A campus commi ed to the future Advances have come and con nue on many fronts across the university, and the people of NDSU are op mis cally looking to the challenges and opportuni es of the future. The university has transformed, moved to the next level and its stature has increased among the na on’s land-grant universi es.

When he came to North Dakota State Univer-sity in the summer of 2001, Gene Taylor inherited a department surrounded by a whirlwind of ques ons. In his fi rst year as the director of athle cs at North Dakota State, Taylor was asked to spearhead a comprehensive study and evalua on of the Bison athle c department. He has guided the athle cs program through the unpredictable waters of reclas-sifi ca on to NCAA Division I from Division II. One of most important pieces of the transi on was securing conference affi lia ons for all 16 sports. The Bison are currently members of The Summit League, Missouri Valley Football Conference and

Western Wrestling Conference. Taylor also played an instrumental part of forming the Great West Football Conference in February 2004, an affi lia on that gave the Bison football program an immediate home in Division I. He served as chair of the coaches commi ee. Also on the reclassifi ca on checklist: fundraising. Taylor spearheaded an increase in the Bison athle cs budget, which has more than doubled from $5 million in his fi rst year to almost $12.5 million for the 2008-09 season. He was recognized for his success by the Na onal Associa on of Collegiate Directors of Athle cs in June 2008. Taylor was one of 29 recipients of the As-troTurf AD of the Year award as the Football Championship Subdivision Central Region winner. A student assistant to the associate athle c director in his undergraduate days at Arizona State University, Taylor came to NDSU a er a 15-year s nt at Navy (1986-2001) as an administra ve assistant, assistant cket manager, cket manager, assistant athle c director for ckets and opera ons, and associate athle c director. Taylor is a 1980 business management graduate of Arizona State, and he received his master’s degree in sports administra on in 1985 from St. Thomas University in Florida. He worked in the cket offi ce at Southern Methodist University in 1985-86 directly before joining the Naval Academy and was in the private restaurant business before that for fi ve years. His tenure at Navy included serving as the commissioner of the fi ve-team Collegiate Sprint Football League that includes Army, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Cornell. Taylor and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of a daughter, Casey, and a son, Jared.

Student-Athlete Support

Sports Medicine Student-athletes at North Dakota State receive outstanding care for athle c-related injuries. The athle c training staff has fully-equipped facili es at the Bison Sports Arena, Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse, Fargo-dome and Newman Outdoor Field. Sco Woken, director of sports medicine, heads a staff of eight cer fi ed athle c trainers who a end all prac ces and compe ons, home and away. Plus, several talented and skilled Fargo-Moorhead area medical specialists assist in the diagnosis and treatment of Bison student-athletes.

Media Coverage The media spotlight shines on North Dakota State’s athle c teams from the opening of fall camps into the summer months. With four network television sta ons, three sports talk radio hosts, and the state’s largest daily newspaper all headquartered in Fargo, the Bison are con- nually a hot topic locally and in the region. Along with regular television news coverage on ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX affi liates, the Bison receive expanded regional and na onal cover-age of select regular-season games and championship events on ESPN, Fox Sports Net, CBS College Sports, and other regional carriers.

GoBison.com GoBison.com is the online home of North Dakota State University athle cs. In 2004, NDSU partnered with JumpTV Sports to launch the most interac ve Web site in the athle c department’s history. Beyond regular news releases, schedules, rosters, game recaps and sta s cs, fans can visit GoBison.com to watch live in-game stats of most home events, purchase ckets, buy photos and download graphics and ringtones for mobile handheld devices. Plus, with the All Access subscrip on plan, broadband Internet users can log on to watch live and on-demand video of many home contests and special events, as well as coaches shows and news confer-ences.

The North Dakota State University athle c programs strive to provide personalized support for all student-athletes. The administrators, coaches and staff at NDSU have made a commitment to ensure that the needs of the student-athlete come fi rst.

Tutors are on site and assist student-athletes by providing one-on-one or small group assistance. Each head coach has specifi c academic criteria for admission into the program. In coopera on with various services and units available for stu-dents at NDSU, the ACE program includes:• Academic orienta ons• Helping student-athletes improve study skills for academic success• Iden fying university resources to assist student-athletes• Coordina ng structured study and tutorial programs• Monitoring semester and yearly academic progress

Residence Life Living on campus is an important part of the college experience. It’s a way to make new friends and join a variety of educa onal, cultural, social and recrea onal ac vi es. Na onal studies show students living on campus are more likely to persist in their educa on and earn higher GPAs than their off -campus peers. The Department of Residence Life off ers a variety of op ons for on-campus living, from tradi onal men’s and women’s halls to four-bed-room apartments. The goal is to provide NDSU students a clean, safe, comfortable and aff ordable environment where academic success is encouraged and supported. On-campus living off ers the opportunity to become part of a learning community.

Strength and Condi oning North Dakota State takes a comprehensive approach to the physical development of the student-athlete. Strength training, speed development, plyometrics, agility and condi oning programs are based on the specifi c movements and physiological demands of each sport. Under the supervision of NDSU’s three full- me strength and condi oning coaches, Bison student-athletes follow year-round training programs that increase each student-athlete’s level of strength, power, speed, agility, condi oning and fl exibility.

From the se lers of the past to the farmers of the present, agriculture always has been and will con nue to be the strength of North Dakota. The state is home to some of the richest soil in the world. North Dakota is a prime exporter of agricultural products, taking the trophy in produc on of several crops. North Dakota ranks fi rst in the produc on of fl axseed, canola, durum wheat, all dry edible beans, all dry edible peas, spring wheat, honey, len ls, sun-fl owers, barley and oats. About 10 percent of North Dakota’s area, the band of rich soil 40 miles west of the Red River, is o en called the “Breadbasket of the World.” Livestock produc on is second only to wheat in North Da-kota’s agricultural economy. It is most important in western North Dakota where the land is less suited for grain crops. The main livestock are beef, dairy ca le and hogs. The importance of ca le ranching has been challenged in recent years by the development of North Dakota’s tremendous oil and coal reserves. Energy is the state’s third-largest industry. Since the late 1970s and the infamous Arab oil embargo, North Dakota has been in the forefront of the na onal eff ort to provide more oil and gas from domes c sources. North Dakota has one of the world’s largest deposits of lignite coal. Among coal-producing states, North Dakota ranks ninth and produces 3 percent of the na on’s output.

Alternately fl ooded by vast prehistoric seas and scraped fl at by immense glaciers, this region eventually became

America’s bread basket and the center of high-tech, 21st-century agribusiness. Less than 10,000 years ago, the area that is now Fargo-Moorhead was 200 feet below the surface of Lake Agassiz, a huge inland sea formed at the edge of the ice age. Over centu-ries the waters receded, leaving 6 feet of rich, black soil that today makes the Red River Val-ley one of the world’s most fer le farmlands, with Fargo and Moorhead at its center. The Red River of the North separates the two ci es and serves as the border between North Dakota and Minnesota. The city of Fargo was named for one of the owners of the Wells-Fargo Express Company, William G. Fargo. The city of Moorhead was named a er William G. Moorhead, an execu ve of the Northern Pacifi c Railway. In fact, the Northern Pacifi c Railway had a profound impact on both the economy and popula on of the area. Originally se led by Scandina-vian and European immigrants, Fargo and Moorhead be-came boom towns with the arrival of the NP in 1871. Under the Homestead Act, set-tlers were given 160 acres in exchange for living on the land and farming part of it for at least fi ve years. Suddenly, Fargo-Moorhead became a mecca for hopeful refugees from the over-crowded East. The railroad brought a constant stream of se lers seek-ing a new life on America’s newest fron er. The home of NDSU, Fargo is a bustling metropolitan area that is o en listed as one of the best places to live in the country. Named an All-American City by the Na onal Civic League in 2000, Fargo-Moor-head is the largest community between Minneapolis and Sea le.

More than 175,000 people make their home in Cass and Clay coun es. There seems to be no end in sight to the persistent prosperity and growth of the twin ci es on the Red. The sixth annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study ranked North Dakota best in the na on in quality of hospital health care. Fargo-Moorhead made the “Cleanest U.S. Ci es for Ozone Air Pollu on” list, as reported by the American Lung Associa on’s State of the Air Report in 2005. ARE YOU A REPRESENTATIVE OF NDSU’S ATHLETICS INTERESTS?

You are a representative of NDSU’s athletics interests, more commonly known as a “booster”, if you meet any of the following conditions: You have been or are a member of any organization that promotes NDSU’s athletics program (e.g., NDSU Foundation, Team Makers). You have made a financial contribution to the NDSU athletics department or its booster organization. You have ever assisted in the recruitment of prospects for NDSU. You have provided benefits (e.g. summer jobs or occasional family meals) to enrolled student-athletes. You have arranged for or provided employment for enrolled student-athletes, or assisted in providing any benefit to enrolled student-athletes or their families. You have ever, in any way, promoted the athletics program at NDSU.

NOTE: Please remember that once you become a booster, you retain that identity indefinitely.

WHO IS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE?

A prospective student-athlete, commonly known as a “prospect,” is any individual who has started classes for the 9th grade. In addition, student-athletes enrolled in preparatory school or two-year colleges are considered prospects. Ultimately, a student remains a prospect until enrollment at a four-year collegiate institution. It is possible for a younger student-athlete to be a prospect so it is a good idea to treat all athletes as prospects until they enroll.

WHO CAN RECRUIT FOR NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY?

Only North Dakota State University coaches who successfully complete the annual NCAA Coaches Certificate Exam, which tests their knowledge of NCAA recruitment legislation, are permitted to be involved in the recruiting process. As a booster, you are specifically prohibited from: Making any recruiting contacts with prospects or their relatives. This includes telephone calls, letters, e-mails, and facsimiles, along with any face-to-face contact either on or off campus. Assisting NDSU coaches by picking up transcripts, films, or any other information pertaining to a

prospect’s ability from the prospect’s educational institution. Providing a benefit to high school, prep school or community college coaches.

NCAA RULES REGARDING THE INTERNET

The internet is considered similar to e-mail, telephone calls, or general correspondence. Therefore, it should not be used by boosters to contact prospects, their families, or their coaches. Participation in “chat rooms” with prospects is strictly prohibited.

NCAA RULES REGARDING BOOSTER INVOLVEMENT WITH PROSPECTS

You may not provide financial aid or benefit of any kind (e.g., clothing, special discounts, lodging, meals, transportation, tickets, loans of money) to prospects or their relatives. You may not contact a prospective student-athlete to congratulate him/her on signing a National Letter of Intent to attend NDSU. You may not provide transportation or arrange for payment of transportation costs for a prospect or his/her relatives or friends to visit campus. You may not earmark funds nor pay for specific prospects to attend an NDSU summer camp. You may not employ or arrange for employment of a prospect before the completion of his/her senior year. After graduation, a booster may employ a prospect as long as compensation is for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with experience and the going rate. You may not provide anything to a prospect or the prospect’s family or friends without prior approval from the Compliance Office.

NCAA RULES REGARDING BOOSTER INVOLVEMENT WITH ENROLLED STUDENT-ATHLETES

You may not pay for or arrange for payment of room, board, or any type of transportation at any time for currently enrolled student-athletes, their relatives, or their friends. You may not provide student-athletes with any sort of extra benefit, which refers to any special arrangement provided a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends with the benefit unavailable to the general student population.

You may not provide student-athletes with any special discounts, payment arrangements (e.g., cosigning a loan), credits on a purchase (e.g., airline ticket, clothing), or services (e.g., dry cleaning, transportation). You may not allow student-athletes to use your telephone or make free calls. You may not provide awards or gifts to student-athletes for any reason. This also prohibits honorariums for speaking engagements. All awards to student-athletes must meet all NCAA legislation and be approved by the Compliance Office. You may not entertain student-athletes or their families and friends. You may not even buy them a cup of coffee or a can of soda. The only exception to this is that you may, on an occasional basis, provide a student-athlete or team (not family members or friends) with a meal. The meal can be catered, but it must be in your home. You may not use the name or picture of a student-athlete to advertise a commercial product. You may not purchase complimentary admissions from a current student-athlete. You may not provide an honorarium to a student-athlete for speaking engagement.

NOTE: These rules apply throughout the student-athlete’s entire enrollment at NDSU.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Forward information about prospects to the appropriate NDSU coaching staff member. View a prospect’s athletics contest on your own initiative, provided you do not contact the prospect or his/her relatives, coach, principal, or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the academic or athletic abilities of the prospect. You are responsible for all incurred costs or fees at a contest. Speak to a prospect on the telephone ONLY if the prospect initiates the call. You are not permitted to have a recruiting conversation, but you may exhibit normal civility. Under such circumstances, you must refer questions about the athletics program to the athletics department staff. Employ a prospect or student-athlete, provided permission has been granted by the athletics department. The student-athlete will ask you to provide employment information to the athletics department prior to employment.

North Dakota State University’s athletics program is rich in tradition. Its storied history includes national, regional, and conference championships and champions. On top of these athletic achievements are numerous

academic championships earned by our student-athletes. As we strive to continue the championship tradition of Bison Athletics, we must always seek the highest of ethical conduct. North Dakota State University is unconditionally committed to NCAA rules and regulations. As an NCAA member institution, we must be responsible for ensuring that everyone abides by those rules. There is no margin for unethical behavior.

With your assistance and cooperation, we believe we can continue to represent the university with integrity, the highest of ethical standards, and the belief in doing what is right. Whether you are an alum, donor, booster, or friend of Bison Athletics, the university is grateful for your support. Together we can accomplish the common goal of ensuring a positive experience for all student-athletes. NDSU is subject to penalties for all violations committed by any alum, donor, booster or friend.

Please contact the NDSU Compliance Office at (701) 231-5696 if you need a specific NCAA rule interpretation.
