This is austin Peay…

Austin Peay State University is a comprehensive, state-assisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in honor of Austin Peay, Ten-

nessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded. The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 minutes

northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville.

Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque downtown Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68 buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architecture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning.

The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitnees and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sun-dquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The new Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students.

Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational insti-tutions since 1806. The campus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation.

Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967.

Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries.

Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, edu-cation, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester.

A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

After four seasons, Dr. Doug Molnar’s hard work and dedication to his program has not gone unnoticed in Austin Peay Athletics.

With more than a decade of Division I coaching experience and more than 20 years of participation in collegiate athletics, Molnar is looking for continued improvement in his fourth season as Austin Peay’s cross country/track and field head coach. A native of Lorain, Ohio, Molnar found a place on the gridiron but excelled as an all-state selection in track and field at Admiral King High School. Following his prep career, he put his speed to work as a four-year runner at West Virginia, serving as a team-captain his junior and senior year. Molnar graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1986 and remained in Morgantown another year, earning his master’s in business administration. Molnar continued his education and launched his coaching career at Kent State. As a graduate assistant, he worked with men and women’s distance runners while completing his second post-graduate degree – a master’s of arts in physical education. He graduated in 1992 and spent a year as a volunteer coach at Oberlin College before returning to serve as Kent State’s men’s cross country head coach while assisting with men and women’s track and field. In his second stint with Kent State, Molnar asserted himself. He assisted with a team that finished 20th at the 1995 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and coached six conference champions and two relay teams which were ranked among the top 10 by Track and Field News. After several successful seasons at Kent State, Molnar again decided to further his education and his coaching experience at Tennessee. He earned a doctorate in educational administration and

cultural studies, while serving two seasons as a volunteer assistant to men’s track and field and interim head coach for the Lady Vols cross country team. During his tenure, the Volunteers won a 2001 national title, claimed runner-up honors in 2002, a berth in the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships and the 2002 Southeastern Conference title. In 2002, Molnar moved west to assist the Texas-Pan American distance running squad. UTPA’s men’s cross-country program

posted a top-10 regional finish in 2003 and the women’s program recorded its best finish at the regional meet since the 1980s. In addition, he coached the program’s first All-American in 2002. While leading Austin Peay, Molnar has seen much of his team’s successes come from field events. Carrie Burggraf and Molly Bartkiewicz both own OVC pole vaulting titles; Burggraf owns the conference record currently, with a 3.75 meter vault. Burggraf also has been named Academic All-American and earned the presitigious Carter Center internship while under Molnar’s tutelage. Molnar has led some of the best teams in Austin Peay history during his tenure at the school. The men’s cross country team earned a sixth-place finish in the 2006 OVC Championships, while the women’s team enjoyed some of their best success in the 2008, during Bertha Castillo’s senior season, finishing seventh. In track and field, Molnar’s best Austin Peay teams were his most recent ones; during the 2008-09 indoor and outdoor season’s, Molnar’s teams finished sixth and fifth in indoor and outdoor, respectively. During the 2009-10 campaigns, Molnar will have senior leadership from the pole vaulting duo of Bartkiewicz and Burggraf, as well as hurdler/high jumper Amanda McCoy and sprinters Candace Cullors and Chiamaka Obi.
