WOMEN’S GOLF The Citadel women’s golf program began in the Fall of 2000 when Suzanne Campbell became the fi rst women’s golfer at the military college. Campbell was a member of the Bulldogs’ team for four years and saw the program grow from one female golfer in 2000-01 to six in the 2003-04 season when she was the women’s team captain.

The Citadel fi rst fi elded a golf team in 1933 and by the end of the decade the Bulldogs were the best team in the state. In 1939, co-captain Weldon Doe led The Citadel to its fi rst of three consecutive state championships. Doe captured individual honors at the state tournament.

The Citadel has had several very good golf teams, particularly in the 1950s and ‘60s. Three straight years, from 1951-53, The Bulldogs won the prestigious South Carolina Intercollegiate Tournament. The 1951 team won six of eight matches while the 1952 team, paced by Bob Lowry, of Huntsville, Ala., and Billy Picard, of Charleston, fi nished third in the Southern Conference. Picard advanced to the quarterfi nals of the National Amateur in 1951.

In the early 1960s, Dick Horne helped make Citadel teams successful, and after Horne graduated in 1962, the team continued its success by capturing the school’s lone Southern Conference title in 1964.

The only golfer in The Citadel’s Athletic Hall of Fame is Charles B. Smith, who was on the South Carolina Intercollegiate championship team in 1952 and served as the Bulldogs’ co-captain. He was named South Carolina Golfer-of-the-Year and participated in the Masters four times. Smith won the Southern Amateur, Eastern Amateur, Carolinas Amateur and was a member of the Walker Cup Team on two occasions.

The men’s golf program continued to develop and produce outstanding golfers. However, the 2004-05 season marked the last season of men’s golf at The Citadel.

WOMEN’S GOLFThe Citadel women’s golf program began in the Fall of 2000 when Suzanne Campbell became the fi rst women’s golfer at the military college. Campbell was a member of the Bulldogs’ team for four years and saw the program grow from one female golfer in 2000-01 to six in the 2003-04 season when she was the women’s team captain.

Mary Nguyen became the second female golfer at The Citadel, joining Campbell in the 2001-02 season. Nguyen also was a member of the program for four years and was named the women’s team captain for the 2004-05 season. Nguyen graduated from The Citadel in 2005.

The women’s program welcomed three new recruits for the 2002-03 season. Tracy Hancock, Kayla Bowsher and Kelley Thorsen were all four-year members of the Bulldog golf program and wrapped up their collegiate careers in the spring of 2006. The trio helped lead the Bulldogs to two top-fi ve fi nishes in the fall of 2004.

The 2005-06 season welcomed freshmen Brittany Nagel, Kasey Owens and Elizabeth Penn-Sanders. Hancock was named the women’s team captain for the 2005-06 season. In 2006-07, Natalie Flores joined the Bulldog roster and Owens was named the team captain.

Current head coach Lori Hatcher Bonacci took over the helm of Bulldog Golf for the 2007-08 season and has been working tirelessly to build the program since. The 2008-09 roster was the largest in the program’s history, with the additions of Bree Baumgartner and Alanna-Jean Keith.

The current tandom of sophomores Baumgartner and Keith hightlight the veteran squad with no freshmen for the 2009-10 season. Mentored by Bonacci, the two lead the Cadets on the leader board, with one having shot a school record 72 and the other having placed in the top 10 and recieving an individual medal in a dual match. Bonacci is continuing to work hard to take the Bulldog Golfers to the next level as they look to make a signifi cant impact in the Southern Conference in years to come.

The Southern Conference, which began its 89th season of inter-collegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasiz-ing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innova-tion and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the fi rst conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the fi rst conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fi fth-oldest NCAA Divi-sion I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacifi c 10 (1915) and the Southwest-ern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Con-ference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institu-tions.

The Conference currently consists of 12 members in fi ve states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

The Southern Conference offi ces are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A tex-tile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league fi rst class meeting areas and of-fi ces as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

Membership HistoryOn Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern In-tercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were offi cials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clem-son, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Poly-technic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee.

Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The deci-sion to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the de-sire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money.

By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president

of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meet-ing to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league in-cluded Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Confer-ence had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932.

The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 col-leges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Caro-lina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a member-ship that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans fi ve states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Fur-man, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Sam-

ford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.

Championship HistoryThe fi rst Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Caro-lina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the fi rst recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tourna-ment remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball.

Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Confer-ence’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track champion-ships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994.

The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its suc-cess.

The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track & fi eld, tennis, golf and softball.

Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fl edgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Missis-sippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929.

With no freshmen added to 2009-10 roster, the Bulldogs look to continue developing into a competitive program. Last season, The Citadel improved their overall stroke average as well as the team stoke average from the 2007-08 season. Finishing the 2008-09 season with a young squad, The Citadel hopes to use the experience from last season to propel them into a season of improvement and success.

The Cadets opened the 2009-10 season at the Draper Valley Women’s Intercollegiate in Draper Valley, N.C. on Sept. 7. The Citadel fi nished the two-day event with a total score of 671. Finishing fi rst for the Bulldogs, sophomore Alanna-Jean Keith’s career-low of a combined 154 helped pull The Citadel 74 strokes ahead of Hollins University for a eighth place fi nish.

The Bulldogs then traveled to Waynesville, N.C. on Sept. 19 to compete in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina. Due to inclement weather, the tournament was scored based on just one round of action. The Citadel fi nished the one day event in 21st place with a total of 326. Again Keith fi nished fi rst, shooting a 78.

The Citadel returned to Charleston, for competition on Oct. 19-20 at the Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charles-ton for the Wendy’s Invitational. The Cadets fi nished in 15th place for a combined two-day total of 697. After shooting a combination of 364 on day one, the Bulldogs improved by 31 strokes on day two of competition for a total of 333.

With just two tournaments left for the fall, the Bulldogs shot a total of 1001 in three rounds at the Palmetto Intercol-legiate in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Cadets’ fi nish at the two-day event held Oct. 26-27, was capped off by sophomore Bree Baumgartner fi ring a school-record par (72) in the fi nal round of action. Baumgartner fi nished fi rst for The Citadel tied for 37th overall with a combined total of 237.

In the fi nal competition for the fall, The Citadel competed at the Pinehurst Fall Challenge, Nov. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C. Hosted by SoCon and crosstown rival the College of Charleston, the Bulldogs fi nished in 14th place as they edged South Carolina State by just six strokes.

“I look forward to the (2010) Spring season being one of our most successful seasons yet,” said third-year head coach Lori Bonacci. “We have veteran players returning to play familiar courses. They all worked extremely hard to improve over 120 strokes from our fall season last year and I look to improve at least that much during the spring.

“With our conference tournament being held in the same location (Moss Creek Country Club) as last year, this hard working veteran group should perform very well and give us our best fi nish in the SoCon standings.”

Below, Coach Bonacci had this to say about The Citadel’s 2009-10 squad:

“Natalie Flores (Senior) is one of those rare people that never stops smiling. She is the girl with the crazy swing that hits every ball right down the middle. With a little bit of putting practice, Natalie will soon be shooting career lows.

“Dorien Shepard (Senior) is the comedian of the group. There is not a practice that goes by that she doesn’t have everyone on the team laughing. She entered the team with little golf knowledge, but she has been working hard and has seen signifi cant improvement.

“Christine Clark (Junior) is one of the most dedicated and knowledgeable players on the team. She is never satisfi ed with her score and will work until every tee shot she hits goes straight down the middle and averages 250. This dedi-cation to the game has helped her overcome a shoulder injury and will continue to help her throughout her senior year.

“Sheri Rockefeller (Junior) has worked very hard to become one of the starting fi ve on the team. As a past softball player she had a tendency to swing the golf club like a bat. We have now corrected those quirks, which created a very powerful swing. She is a strong player and has worked hard to control that power to become a very consistent player.

“Kate Hardina (Junior) entered college golf with the experience and knowledge from a very competitive high school career. This allowed her to have a successful freshman year.

“Bree Baumgartner (Sophomore) is Miss Consistency. Bree entered her sophomore year as Team Captain. She led by example and worked hard to shoot a school record 72 at the Kiawah College of Charleston Invitational. Bree has a very extensive knowledge of swing mechanics, which will continue to aid her and this team in the years to come.

“Alanna Keith (Sophomore) has been one of the strongest players on the team. She has had a top 10 fi nish at the App State Invitational and was the medalist at the SC State Dual Match. She is an extremely hard worker and will putt for hours on the practice green. This dedication will make her one of the most successful golfers in Citadel history.”

Lori BONACCIThird Season Head Coach

Lori Hatcher Bonacci enters her third season as the head coach for Women’s Golf at The Citadel.

In her fi rst year, she improved the Bulldog program drastically. In just one season, Bonacci de-creased the Bulldogs’ overall stroke total from 2006-07 by 510 strokes. Recruiting talented players, Bonacci looked to increase The Citadel’s level of competition and make a signifi cant impact in the Southern Conference.

With the signing of Alanna-Jean Keith and Bree Baumgartner to the roster last season, Bonacci mentored the then freshmen to a fi rst and second place fi nish, respectively, on the Cadets’ leader board. Bonacci coached Keith to a top fi ve fi nish in tournament action, as well as an improvement to the Bulldogs’ individual and team stroke average.

A 2004 graduate of Youngstown State, Bonacci earned her undergraduate degree in marketing and was a four-year letterwinner for the women’s golf team. In 2003, Bonacci led the Penguins in becom-ing the fi rst YSU women’s program to earn a Horizon League Conference Championship winning the inaugural league women’s golf title by 10 strokes over Loyola. Along with the team championship, Bonacci won the individual championship and earned All-Conference and All-Tournament honors. Following her championship junior season, Bonacci repeated her honors on the All-Conference and All-Tournament teams.

Prior to her collegiate debut, Bonacci played in the highly esteemed United States Girls Amateur Tournament as well as in various tournaments with the American Junior Golf Association. In 2000, she won the P.J. Boatwright Challenge Cup Junior State Championship in Pennsylvania.

“Lori brings a wealth of knowledge about college golf from her playing experience at Youngstown State where she was a conference champion,” said Senior Woman Administrator Kelly Simpson. “She possesses an enthusiasm for the game that we feel will carry over to the team members and have an immediate impact on the women’s golf program.”

A native of Wheeling, W.Va. Bonacci taught golf for six years at The Oglebay Resort where she was an instruc-tor in the junior golf department. Following graduation from Youngstown State, she worked for Goodwill as a director of vocational services. After moving to Charleston in 2006, Bo-nacci served as an assistant at a local doctor’s offi ce before joining the staff at The Citadel. She and her husband, Anthony welcomed a baby girl, Emily Gianna, on December 1, 2009. The Bonacci family resides in Summerville.

Lt Gen John W. ROSA, JR.Fourth Year The Citadel (1973)

Lt Gen John W. Rosa became the 19th president of The Citadel on January 3, 2006. His presidency has been marked by a keen focus on strategic initiatives that will enhance The Citadel’s mission of developing principled leaders.

His concern for keeping a Citadel education relevant in the 21st century while holding to the values that make the col-lege unique has strengthed the college in signifi cant ways. Since Rosa became president, The Citadel has increased the size of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and completed a $100 million capital campaign -- two benchmarks of a vibrant institution. Rosa was born in Springfi eld, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel Rosa was starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force. A command fi ghter pilot with more than 3,600 fl ying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange offi cer fl ying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in South Korea, Idaho, South Carolina, New Mexico and Georgia. He served as inspector general for Pacifi c Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. He remained in that position until his retirement from active duty in November 2005.

Rosa then returned to Charleston to become president of his alma mater. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. And he has studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Charleston in May of 2007. Since returning to Charleston, he has become active in college and community affairs. Rosa is a member of the board of directors of The Citadel Foundation, The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and The Lowcountry Graduate Center. He is an ex offi cio member of The Citadel School of Business Advisory Board. He is on the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and, in 2007, served as Educational Divi-sion Campaign Director for Trident United Way. He was also a 2007 member of the Burke High School Scholarship Committee. Both The Society of the Cincinnati and the Washington Light Infantry have made Lt. Gen. Rosa an honorary member. Rosa is also a member of the Rotary Club of Charleston. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has fl own the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircraft,

F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130.

He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (’03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.
