JIS Z 8102 : Custom Names in “Objective Color”

・Number of the names

・Names known well in industrial area.

・Names which are expected to know.

・Color Name Selection Criteria

122 : Non-Japanese

147 : Japanese

269 : Total

JIS Z 8102 : Objective Color (My Opinion)

・Are all color names used by people ?

・If not, What color names are valid ?

・Opinion

From Past Researches In Japan

「The Recognition of Color Names 」(Influence by generation and gender)

・Morita & Kagawa (1989,1990,1993)

「An Analysis of the sensible colors and the discernment about Japanese Traditional Accustomed Colors」

・Okamoto (2005,2007)

Index of “Recognition”

「Reproduction of color by choice of tone classified color card」

「Knowing the name or not ?」

・Morita & Kagawa

「Reproduction of color by PC-Monitor」

「Can imagine or not ?」

・ Okamoto

「Knowing the name or not ?」

Various indices exist.

Can these be gathered together ?

Concept

Aim of this Research

・To acquire ”Color distance from measurement point” ”Familiarity” and ”Imaginableness ” in each color name.

・To define “Recognition” by synthesizing all data.

※ 122 non-Japanese color name were used in this research.

Method

Questionnaire

Result

・Classification

b. Included Basic Color:「Rose Pink」「Nile Blue」etc.

a. Basic Color Name:「Red」「Blue」「White」etc.

c. Non-Included:「Violet」「Beige」「Jaune Brilliant」etc.

☞ Please refer to the data

Evaluation 1

・Color Distance

New Indices ・Familiarity

・Imaginableness

☞ (Is it “Recognition?”)

Evaluation 2

z1 = -0.500×C.D. + 0.589×Fami. + 0.635×Imagi.

z2 = 0.834×C.D. + 0.524×Fami. + 0.170×Imagi.

Interpretation as Recognition index

Interpretation as the degree of distance in color space

Evaluation 3

Evaluation 4

・Basic > Included

・Recognition ・Distance in Color Space

・Included > Non-Included

・Non-Included > Included

・Basic > Non-Included (p≒0.05)

・Basic : Totally Good Recognition.

・Included & Non-Included: Not good in Recognition on the average.

・Dependent on including basic color word or not in Distance in Color Space

Summary(Output)

・Collecting data in “Color Distance”,”Familiarity” and

“Imaginableness” in each color.

※ In this research, Subjects were limited in college student.

In future , need to have samples from wide generation.

※ Also , need to compare in generation, gender and so on.

・Degree of Recognition in each color name were

estimated from “Recognition” and ”Distance in color

Space” values.

・By synthesizing those data , ”Recognition” and

“Distance in color space” values were led as indices.
