καιρóς is the moment of successful fulfillment. The ancient Greeks used this word to describe the opportune moment, which is encountered as fate and demands to be used in a decisive way.

KAIROS captures music that is contemporary, that opens up new spaces und experiences for contemporary ears and minds.

Auf KAIROS wird Musik, an deren Kraft und Fortbestehen wir glauben, präsentiert. Kairos bietet den Hörerinnen und Hörern herausfordernde ästhetische Positionen und neue Wege des Hörens. Kairos erschließt neue musikalische Welten in einer auf das individuelle Werk abgestimmten Aufnahmequalität. Zur Gesamtkonzeption zählen Booklettexte, die sich der Musik auf essayistische, analytische und literarische Weise annähern.

KAIROS publishes only music in whose power and continuance we believe, music that assumes challenging aesthetic positions and explores new ways of perceiving sound in a recording quality appropriate for the individual pieces. Each CD is thus a kind of integral concept, accompanied by a booklet with essayistic, analytic and literary reviews.

Auf der einen Seite steht bei Luca Francesconi eine Faszination für die musikalische Tradition des Abendlandes, vor allem für die Werkzeuge, die diese Tradition hervorgebracht hat, auf der anderen Seite findet sich die Freude an einer ungehemmt strömenden, archaischen - also vorrationalen Energie die im nächtlichen Dunkel spürbar werden bei Rock und Jazz. Doch für ihn geht es nicht darum, europäische Musikkulturen als entgegen gesetzte Pole zu betrachten, sondern den Versuch zu unternehmen die beiden miteinander zu verbinden.

Luca Francesconi is fascinated by the musical tradition of the western world, particularly with the tools which this tradition has developed, but he also takes joy in the unrestrictedly flowing, archaic energy which becomes palpable under cover of nocturnal darkness in rock and jazz. His aim is not, however, to view European musical cultures as opposite poles, but rather to attempt a connection of the two.

Die Sirenen vermögen bis heute für eine Kunst zu stehen, die uns fesselt, der wir mit Hingabe und bei voller Aufmerksamkeit lau-schen. So ist es nahegelegen, die neue Kooperation von Ensemble intercontemporain, Ircam und KAIROS „Sirènes“ zu nennen. Das auf viele Jahre konzipierte Projekt wird führende kompositorische Positionen an der Schnittstelle von Instrumentalmusik und Elektronik präsentieren. Sirènes - Die anspielungsreiche Metapher für eine Neue Musik, die auf Erfahrungen zielt, denen man sich einfach aussetzen muss und die ebenso verführerisch wie fordernd auf uns zukommen.

The new cooperative venture between Ensemble intercontemporain, IRCAM and KAIROS

Until the present day, sirens have symbolised an art which captivates us, to which we listen surrendering our entire attention. Thus naming the new cooperative venture between Ensemble intercontemporain, IRCAM and KAIROS “Sirènes” seems highly appropriate. Over the years ahead, the project will present leading composers working at the interface between instrumental music and electronics. Sirènes - a richly allusive metaphor for a New Music that offers us experiences to which we simply must expose ourselves, and which are as seductive as they are demanding in their approach to us.

Durch die Beschäftigung mit neuen Ideen der Avantgarde-Physik, mit der Bildhauerei, mit dem zeitgenössischen Tanz und vor allem die Zusammen-arbeit mit Instrumentalisten, die sich mit außergewöhnlichem Engagement der Uraufführung neuer Werke widmen, hat Héctor Parra in den vergan-genen Jahren eine schärfere, abwechslungsreichere und polyphonere Sprache entwickelt. Seine elektronische Verarbeitung und Spatialisierung der Instrumentaltöne versetzt den Hörer in Zustände „hoher Klangenergien“, in denen Verständnis der Raumzeit, in der wir uns im Moment der Aufführung befinden, gleichzeitig hinterfragt und bereichert werden kann.

Through his involvement with new ideas from avant-garde physics, sculpture, contemporary dance and, above all, his cooperation with instrumental-ists who dedicate themselves with exceptional enthusiasm to the premièring of new musical works, Héctor Parra has spent the past few years develop-ing an ever-sharper, more varied and more polyphonic musical language. His electronic processing and spatialization of instrumental sounds places listeners in states of “high sonic energy,” states in which our understanding of the spacetime in which we find ourselves at the moment of performance can be simultaneously questioned and enriched.

In den letzten Jahren hat sich in Spanien eine junge Szene im Bereich der Neuen Musik entwickelt, die dabei ist, sich international zu positionieren und die aktuelle Wahrnehmung Neue Musik substantiell zu modifizieren. KAIROS und die Fundación Caja Madrid halten diese Entwicklung ab Herbst 2008 mit 5 Produktionen jährlich fest und fokussieren damit eine spannende Entwicklung.

The New Generation

Over the past few years, Spain has seen the development of a new young scene in the field of contemporary music, a scene that is in the process of positioning itself internationally and substantially modifying how contemporary music is currently perceived. Beginning in the autumn of 200�, KAIROS and Fundación Caja Madrid will be documenting this development via five productions annually, bringing into focus a process which is exciting indeed.

An der Schnittstelle von Neuer Musik und Flamenco avancierte Mauricio Sotelo zu einem der bestimmenden europäischen Künstler seiner Generation. Besessen von der Neugierde für Klänge, die ihn sogar in den Traum verfolgten, sog er die Klangeindrücke seiner Um-gebung in sich auf. Es gab zwar zu Hause kein Klavier, aber die Gitarre war allgegenwärtig: Popmusik, Jimi Hendrix, Experimental-Jazz, aber vor allem Flamenco und cante hondo („tiefer Gesang“, ein tragischer und hoch emotioneller Gesang der Unterdrückten).

At the interface between contemporary music and flamenco, Sotelo has progressed to become one of the leading European artists of his generation. Possessed by curiosity about sounds, sounds which haunted him even in his dreams, he absorbed the sonic impressions from the world around him. There was no piano at home, but the guitar was omnipresent: pop music, Jimi Hendrix, experimental jazz, and above all flamenco and cante jondo (“deep song,” the tragic and highly emotional vocal music of the oppressed).
