Congratulations on your entry to QUT. The years ahead will be an important time o personal
and intellectual growth as you develop the knowledge required or a particular career and
general skills or both proessional and personal lie.
The frst ew days at university, like other transitional experiences in lie, can be a bewildering
and even traumatic experience. Commencing students typically experience a sea o unamiliaraces, a seemingly endless number o orms and regulations, and the uncertainty o learning in a
new environment.
QUTs Orientation Program is one way o helping you through this time. Orientation provides you
with inormation through aculty talks, library and laboratory tours, and inormation about QUT
and the acilities we oer.
QUTs Orientation Program also shows you the human ace o QUT, with many o our students and sta volunteers acting
as human signposts to direct you through the initial turbulent days. The personal interaction you have at this time will
orm the beginning o a network o proessional and personal associations you will make during your studies here, and
one that you will maintain or many years aterwards.
As part o your orientation, the inormation contained in this booklet will help you to settle in quickly and to begin your
studies with a broader perspective on your academic area and QUT as a whole. Welcome to QUT. I hope you will makethe most o your time here.

Your OrientationOrientation is a series o activities and programs designed to amiliarise you with QUT. Some events like GETTING
STARTED (or International students) and FACULTY SESSIONS are COMPULSORY and are clearly marked. Others are
there or you to decide what is important to you and to get the most out o Orientation.
The QUT ORIENTATION EVENTS are university wide and available to all commencing students local and international.
In addition, there are aculty wide events FACULTY ORIENTATION to welcome all new students as well as to tell you
more about your course, services and programs that may be specifc to your school or aculty.

Academic Writing at QUTWho: A two-hour workshop or undergraduate and masters students.

Get your ID CARD (COMPULSORY)Your QUT ID Card is your key to a host o services at QUT. You will need your ID Card to access some computer labs,
borrow books at the library, sit exams, and to get concessions on public transport.
International students can obtain their ID card as soon as they arrive on campus. You must present your current
passport and visa to obtain your ID card. It would also help to bring your letter o oer or your student number and
confrmation o your electronic visa I applicable.

East West Gold Coast Orientation Trip
Saturday 26 July
The orientation trip provides a chance to meet new riendsand relax beore you get into your study. We visit CurrumbinWildlie Sanctuary, have lunch at a Sur Lie Saving Club.Ater lunch we will visit the amous Surers Paradise, whereyou can go shopping, do some sightseeing, or just headto the beach. At Currumbin Sanctuary you get a chanceto view native Australian animals in natural settings. It ishome to one o the worlds largest collections o Australiananimals eaturing more than 1500 individual animals romapproximately 200 species Cost $55 approx.
Whale Watching at Harvey Bay (overnight

The QUT International Womens Group is set up for thespouses and emale amily members o the internationalstudents at QUT. The Group aims to establish mutualsupport or the amily members o international students. Weunderstand what it is like living in a oreign country away rom

Follow-up Orientation: Drop-in Session

You are invited to a one-hour group meeting to discussdiculties you may be having in dealing with your newacademic environment. This meeting is open to all newinternational and NESB students. Topics that have beencovered at previous meetings include accommodation,nancial issues, academic diculties (changing subjects,understanding lectures, handling assignments, nding materialetc), language diculties and many others. The aim o themeeting is to help you nd solutions to problems and directyou to support available.
Managing Exams (Week 9)
This workshop provides practical suggestions or preparingor exams and improving perormance on the day o theexam. Techniques or handling exam stress and anxiety arealso discussed.
Graduating Students Workshop (Week 10)
Graduating Students Workshop for students covers a rangeo topics including job seeking, resum writing, interview skills,keeping in touch with past students (Alumni), visa concerns,graduation and a checklist o things to do beore leavingAustralia. The workshop also includes a session on migrationto Australia. Reminders are sent to graduating students closerto the date o the workshop.
