    BryansReefing History

    Ive now been in the

    hobby for four years.

    My only current tank

    is the 180 gallon

    mixed reef being

    featured in the

    article.

    My hobby

experience has alsoincluded a 75 gallon

    soft coral reef, and a

    150 gallon zoanthid

    propagation system.

    Tank Summary and History

Four years ago, after snorkeling on a Florida vacation I knew what I wanted. After returning home, I walked into

a local fish store, and said I would like to start a salt water tank. The lady asked me if I ever had a fresh water

tank, and I replied no. She told me that I would never be able to make it work. I told her I would like the 75 gallon

tank anyway and whatever I needed to set it up. I was sent home with an under gravel filter, bags of crushed

coral, and a bag of salt. After six months I had a nitrate factory full of hair algae, and I almost shut it down.

As my frustration was building, I happened to come across someone who had been in the hobby for a while, and

I got some good advice. I then read every book, and magazine I could get my hands on.

The under gravel filter came out, and in went a sand bed, 150 lbs of live rock, sump, protein skimmer, and

    phosphate media.

Several months later, my rock was covered in coralline algae, and I began adding soft corals over the next two

years. My frustration was replaced with a passion for reef keeping that only those of us in the hobby could

    understand.

Last summer I set up this 180 gallon tank, and I moved everything over from my previous system. For the last 10

months I have been adding SPS corals a little at a time and removing my soft corals. This has been a wonderful

experience, and education. I look forward to the challenges, and rewards from setting up a completely SPS

    dominated tank.

    Equipment

The sump is a 30 gallon breeder equipped with a Euro Reef RS 180 protein skimmer and Phosban media reactor.

I have several different types of macro algae, and red mangroves in the refugium for added phosphate removal.

For flow I am using 2- Koralia 4s, 1- Maxi Jet 1200 with sure flow modification, 1- Seio 620, and a Mag 7 for a

return pump. The tank is turning over approximately 30 times an hour.

The tanks lighting consists of Aqua Medic Pendants firing 250 watt, double ended, 14,000K Phoenix bulbs, and 4

65 watt power compact bulbs in 460 nm, and 50/50 spectrums.

    Red/OrangeZoanthids

Besides regular daily maintenance and observations, the tank is

maintained simply with regular monthly water changes. Calcium,

Alkalinity, and other trace elements are maintained with periodic doses

of ESV B-Ionic two part solution.

    This piece is an aqua

    cultured frag of four polyps

    BryansAcknowledgments

    More than half of my

    corals were purchased

    as a result of

    aquaculture. I feel this

    is very important to

    help sustain our reefs,

    and I want to thank

    those of you that

    practice propagation.

    I also am very

    pleased to see a

    company like Reef FX

    come to the Decatur

    area. Dewayne and

    his family offer great

    service and some

    beautiful coral.

    Blue Bottle Brush

Congratulations Bryan on being the very first tank honored by our

club. We wish you all the luck and success in your continued

endeavors throughout the hobby. Youre an inspiration to us all.
