Quick Facts

Bobcat Football History

After struggling to get a consistent running game going in the Wyoming game, the Bobcats man-aged 145 total yards on the ground at Ohio State, 148 against Central Michigan, 251 against VMI, 148 at Western Michigan and 176 at Kent State. Redshirt freshman Donte Harden has been impres-sive thus far, notching a team-high 454 yards on 87 carries (5.2 per run). The Ohio offense amassed 575 yards of total offense against VMI, which was the fi fth-highest total in school history and the most for the program since September 16, 2000 when Ohio had 597 yards in a 52-14 win over Tennessee Tech.

RUSHING GAME RETURNS

The Bobcats continued a trend that has been growing for the past fi ve seasons in the win over VMI. Ohio got a pair of non-offensive touchdowns, courtesy of senior linebacker Michael Brown’s nine-yard fumble return that tied the score at 24 and L.J. Flintall’s 97-yard kickoff return for touchdown. The two scores represented Ohio’s 21st and 22nd non-offensive scores since the beginning of the 2004 season. Brown’s fumble return was the fi rst for the program since T.J. Wright notched one in the 2006 season-opening win over Tennessee-Martin.

GETTING NON-OFFENSIVE

The Ohio offense has put up some big numbers through the fi rst half of the 2008 season. The Bobcats are on pace to set school records for passing yards (2,888), passing yards per game (240.7), completions (235) and passing touchdowns (19). Ohio is also on pace for 4,451 yards of total offense, which would be the second-highest total in program history, and an average of 370.9 per game, which would be third.

BIG NUMBERS

The Bobcats have posted a greater time of possession than their opponents in each of the past fi ve games. The last time the program boasted this for fi ve straight games was the fi rst fi ve contests of the 2006 season. The squad had the ball for 36 minutes and 50 seconds in the 26-19 win at Kent State, the most for the team since Sept. 9, 2006 when it held the ball for 37 minutes and 20 seconds in a 35-23 win at Northern Illinois.

BALLHOGS

The Bobcats surrendered a safety for just the second time since Coach Solich has taken the reins during the 41-20 loss at Western Michigan. The fi rst one came in a 35-32 win over Kent State on Sept. 24, 2005.

JUST TWICE

Prior to the 26-19 win at Kent State, the Ohio football program had dropped fi ve straight road contests dating back to the Akron loss last season. The last time the program dropped six straight road games was the last four of the 2003 season and the fi rst two of the 2004 campaign.

TOUGH ROAD

A quick search of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision programs revealed that Russ Eisenstein, the Voice of the Bobcats, is the second-youngest radio play-by-play voice in the nation. The top six are as follows: 1. Jeremy Marks-Peltz, Florida International (25)2. Russ Eisenstein, Ohio (28)3. Matt Stolz, Arkansas State (30)4. Ryan Radtke, Nevada (31)5. Dave Koehne, Virginia (32)6 Matt Park, Syracuse (33)

SECOND ON THE LIST

Ohio head coach Frank Solich will tie Mark Banks for sixth on the program’s all-time victories list with his next triumph. Banks won 22 games from 1913-17. Don Peden tops the list with 121 wins from 1924-46.

LOOKING AT SIXTH

Defensive lineman A.J. Oxley’s blocked fi eld goal at the end of the fi rst half against Kent State was the program’s fi rst blocked fi eld goal since Nov. 15, 2003 at Akron.

REJECTED!

Ohio linebacker Lee Renfro and placekicker Barrett Way were named MAC Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, following the 26-19 win at Kent State. Renfro had a team-high 11 tackles, a tackle for loss, a half sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Way tied a school record with four fi eld goals (42, 47, 23 and 37) and hit both of his extra point attempts.

RENFRO, WAY HONORED

The Bobcats have had a diffi cult time limiting turnovers in 2008, which is an anomaly for the pro-gram since head coach Frank Solich has taken the reins. The Bobcats are averaging 2.7 turnovers per game this season which is up from 1.9 last season, 2.1 in 2006 and 1.6 in 2005.

BITTEN BY THE TURNOVER BUG

TOP PLAY

Ohio junior quarterback Boo Jackson posted some huge numbers in the 31-28 loss to Central Michi-gan, his fi rst FBS start. Jackson set a new school record with 413 yards of total offense and his 365 yards through the air were the fourth-highest total in school history. He also tossed three touch-downs with no interceptions. As a team, Ohio’s 513 yards of total offense was the 10th-highest total in the Ohio record book, before the program’s 575 yards against VMI knocked it down to 11th.

STRONG OUT OF THE GATE

Junior quarterback Boo Jackson was named MAC Report Online Offensive Player of the week fol-lowing the Central Michigan contest. Making his fi rst major college start, Boo Jackson led Ohio to a near-upset of the defending MAC champion Central Michigan Chippewas, passing for 365 yards and three touchdowns in his starting debut to go along with 48 yards rushing. His 413 yards of total offense set an Ohio Bobcats’ single-game record for total yards by an individual player.

JACKSON CLAIMS MAC REPORT ONLINE HONOR

Ohio junior safety Steven Jackson was named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week following the Northwestern contest. Jackson had a game-high 12 tackles, adding an interception, a forced fumble, two pass breakups and a half tackle for loss in a 16-8 loss at Northwestern. Jackson helped hold an offense that had been averaging 29 points per game in its fi rst three games to 13 points be-low that average. Jackson led a Bobcats defense had fi ve takeaways (four interceptions, one fumble recovery).

JACKSON NAMED MAC EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Senior tight end Andrew Mooney caught his 12th career touchdown pass in the second quarter of the 41-20 loss at Western Michigan, tying him with Tom Compernolle (1983-1986) for second all-time on Ohio’s career touchdown receptions list. He also fi nished with a career-high tying fi ve receptions.

MOONEY STILL CLIMBING

Junior quarterback Boo Jackson set career-highs with 42 attempts and 27 completions in the North-western game. His completions put him eighth on the Ohio list for most completions in a game and his attempts ranked him eighth for most attempts in a game.

BOO’S MARKS

Ohio did a much better job slowing down the VMI offense in the second half, limiting the Keydets to just 136 yards, all of which came on the ground. VMI did however, rack up 15 rushing fi rst downs and 339 total rushing yards on the afternoon which are totals that surpassed any that an Ohio opponent has posted in at least that last fi ve seasons. The Bobcats did, however, stymie the VMI passing attack, hold-ing the visitors to just 97 yards through the air. That last time the program held an opponent to fewer yards was Oct. 28, 2006 when Kent State mustered just 79 in a 17-7 Ohio road win.

UNBALANCED

Ohio redshirt freshman Donte Harden’s 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Cow-boys of Wyoming in the 2008 season opener gained a lot of attention, and not just in Athens. The play was picked by ESPN as the top play of the day.

Junior running back L.J. Flintall had a breakout game against VMI, but it didn’t come in the running game. Subbing for the injured Chris Garrett, Flintall ripped off 165 kick return yards on just three chances. Flintall’s 55.0 average per return is now third on Ohio’s single game list behind Joshua Abrams’ 57.6 yard average against Miami last season and Kahieem Maxwell’s 56.0 yard average against Western Michigan in 1998. The biggest contribution came on his 97-yard kickoff return for touchdown which is now the third longest in school history behind teammate Donte Harden, who had a 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown earlier this season at Wyoming and Maxwell’s 99-yard return in that Western Michigan contest.

FLINTALL FLIES

Ohio’s 51 points in the win over VMI represented the fi rst time since October 19, 2002 that program totaled at least 50 points. In that game, the Bobcats racked up 50 on their way to a blanking of Kent State. The last time Ohio had more points was the weekend before when it dropped 55 on Eastern Michigan in a 55-27 victory over the Eagles.

Taylor Price’s eighth reception with just under 2:30 to play in the third quarter against Wyoming marked the most receptions by a Bobcat receiver since Rudy Sylvan pulled in seven passes against Bowling Green on Sept. 30, 2006. His 14 receptions for the game set a school record, while his 139 to-tal yards was just short of a top ten all-time performance for a single game in the Ohio record book.

THE PRICE WAS RIGHT

After struggling to keep penalty numbers down during most of the 2007 season, Ohio was fl agged for 12 penalties that cost them 115 yards during the Wyoming game. The Bobcats were hit with nine more penalties for 98 yards in the loss at Western Michigan and 12 for 102 yards in the win at Kent State. On the season, the Bobcats have been fl agged for 21 more penalties than the opposition for a difference of 214 yards. The Bobcats have been fl agged for as many or more penalties and penalty yardage than their opponents in all of their seven games in 2008.

Junior linebacker Lee Renfro was named MAC East Division Player of the Week by the league offi ce following the Ohio State contest. He had a game-high nine tackles (4 solo, 5 assisted) as the Bobcats put a scare into No. 3 ranked Ohio State before falling late, 26-14. The Ohio defense allowed only two touchdowns and limited the Buckeyes to just 5-of-15 on third down plays. Renfro also had a sack and keyed a defense that held the OSU offense to 272 yards of total offense and just 4.0 yards per play.

RENFRO NAMED MAC EAST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The matchup with the Buckeyes on Sept. 6 was the largest audience (105,002) for the Bobcats in school history. The previous record was 93,222 when Ohio last traveled to Columbus on Sept. 18, 1999. Offi cial capacity for Ohio Stadium, also known as The Horseshoe, is listed as 102,329. The Buckeyes opened the 2008 season with a 43-0 win over Youngstown State last weekend in front of a reported crowd of 105,011. Ohio has played in front of fi ve of its eight largest crowds since Sept. 2002, including a crowd of 66,233 at Virginia Tech during the 2007 season.

CROWD PLEASERS

With the Bobcats’ 17-13 lead going into the locker room against Kent State, Ohio has now led 22 times at intermission under Solich. With the win, the Bobcats are now 17-5 when taking a lead into intermission since 2005.

Using horseshoe venacular, if a win in The Horsehoe would have been considered a ringer, then Ohio’s 7-6 halftime lead could be called a leaner. It marked the fi rst time ever in six meetings with OSU that the ‘Cats have held a lead going in to the locker room. It was also the second-most points Ohio has scored on the Buckeyes.

A LEANER IN THE HORSESHOE

Saturday’s game with the Buckeyes marked Ohio’s 13th nationally televised game in the last three years. It was the Bobcats’ third time to ever play nationally on ESPN.

ON THE BIG STAGE

Harden’s score gave the Bobcats a 7-3 lead. This was not the fi rst time they have held a lead on the Buckeyes in Columbus. The last time the two met was Sept. 18, 1999, and Ohio held a 10-3 lead late in the second quarter before OSU evened the tally.

• After earning Freshman All-American honors during the 2006 season, Ohio’s Chris Garrett (Bristow, Va.) wasn’t about to rest on his laurels or let anyone think that his explosive rookie season was a fl uke. Garrett has come on strong for the Bobcats ever since, establishing himself as one of the team’s top specialists and playing an increased role during offensive possessions.

• Against Wyoming last season, Garrett had his fi rst career kickoff return for a touchdown. The 94-yard return tied then for the second-longest all-time in school history, matching a mark set in 1964 by Jerry France against Bowling Green.

• Garrett is one of several players in school history to return one kickoff for a touchdown, however, no one has repeated the feat. Garrett returned a punt for a touchdown during his freshman season, amassing 88-yards aaginst Western Michigan.

GARRETT’S PLACE IN BOBCAT HISTORY

Chris Garrett

Ohio has enjoyed good success when putting the fi rst points of the game on the board under Frank Solich. Since 2005, the Bobcats are now 11-6 when scoring fi rst.

SCORING FIRST UNDER SOLICH

If Chris Garrett’s 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in last year’s season opener against the Cowboys (which tied the second-longest kickoff return in school history at the time) wasn’t enough, redshirt freshman Donte Harden provided some fi reworks of his own with 8:52 left in the second quarter when he returned Wyoming’s Jake Scott’s kick 100 yards for a touchdown, breaking two Cowboy tackles at 35-yard line before going the fi nal 65 yards untouched. Harden’s return eclipsed Kahieem Maxwell’s 99-yard return against Western Michigan in 1998.

EXPLOSIVES IN LARAMIE

Junior Steven Jackson’s interception of Wyoming quarterback Dax Crum in the second quarter was the fi rst pickoff of his career. It led to kicker Barrett Way’s fi rst Ohio fi eld goal, a 31-yard conversion with 4:31 left in the second quarter, which gave the Bobcats a 17-14 lead. If that wasn’t enough, se-nior Neil Jereb stepped in front of a Crum pass three plays later to pick up his fi rst career intercep-tion and Ohio’s second of the game. With the game being broadcast on The Mountain, the Bobcats played in their fi rst game on the Mountain West Conference’s offi cial broadcast network.

CLOSE CALLS

Ohio fell 21-20 at Wyoming to kick off the 2008 season. It was the second consecutive matchup, that saw the Cowboys escape with a one-point victory. The last time Ohio lost consecutive one-point decisions to the same opponent was 1979 and 1980 (Northern Illinois).

A season ago, running back Kalvin McRae and kicker Michael Braunstein totally rewrote their respective categories in the Ohio record book. making a name for themselves in the Ohio record book. Two current players have also earned a spot among the Bobcats’ career defensive leaders.

• Senior cornerback Mark Parson (Richmond, Va.) ranks among Ohio’s career leaders in both pass breakups and passes defended (breakups and interceptions). In 2006, Parson amassed 16 pass breakups, a mark which tied for second all-time on the school’s career single-season list. He currently has 29 in his career, which ties for third among all-time Bobcat defenders. In 2006, he also recorded 17 passes defended, which also placed fi fth in the single-season records. He currently has 33 for his career, which is tied for fourth all-time.

• Senior Jameson Hartke earned a starting role at defensive end as a sophomore and put up the stats to prove that he’d earned it. During his sophomore season in 2006, Hartke tallied 7.5 sacks against opposing quarterbacks, a mark which ranked fi fth all-time on the single-season list. His pair of sacks against Kent State is tied for fi fth all-time for a single game effort. Hartke is the Bobcats’ active leader with 14.5 sacks, which places him third on the school’s career leaderboards. Hartke also appears in Ohio’s tackles for loss records. Against Central Michigan in the 2006 MAC Championship game, Hartke made 3.5 tackles for loss, tying for seventh all-time in a single game.

LOVING THE LEAGUE

• Since the 1998 season, Ohio is 34-14 (.708) when reaching the 28-point plateau.• In that same span, Ohio has had 14 victories when scoring less than 28 points, including fi ve

contests during the 2006 season (vs. Western Michigan 27-20; at Illinois 20-17; at Kent State 17-7; at Eastern Michigan 16-10; vs. Akron 17-7).

• The Bobcats had won 12 straight games when scoring at least 28 points, prior to the loss against Wyoming (34-33) last season.

• Ohio is 28-9 (.757) since 1998 when scoring at least 30 points, 13-2 (.867) when putting up at least 40 points and 5-0 (1.000) when scoring at least 50 points.

BOBCATS WIN WHEN SCORING 28

Ohio was happy to fi nd comfort - and a win - in the arrival of homecoming against VMI. The Bobcats are now 46-39-1 (.541) all-time on homecoming. Ohio has faced Miami more than any other opponent on homecoming, winning eight of 18 (.444) meetings all-time between the two schools.

THANKFUL FOR HOMECOMING

BOBCATS NAME CAPTAINSThe program has announced that senior linebacker Michael Brown, senior defensive end Jameson Hartke and senior tight end David Carter have been named captains for the 2008 campaign.

• Ohio Director of Athletics Jim Schaus announced in July that head football coach Frank Solich’s contract has been extended through the 2013 season. Solich enters the 2008 campaign 18th nationally in winning percentage (.675) among active Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches with at least fi ve years of experience.

• In his third year as the Bobcats’ head coach, Solich led the team to its second consecutive bowl-eligible campaign, played an instrumental role in the development of defensive lineman Landon Cohen (Ohio’s fi rst NFL draft pick since 2002) and secured the Mid-American Conference’s top-ranked recruiting class for the upcoming season according to MACReportOnline.com. Solich, a standout running back himself during his college days, also mentored Ohio star tailback Kalvin McRae. During the past three seasons, McRae completely rewrote the school’s record book while securing the program’s fi rst Hula Bowl invitation since 2003.

• All of this came just one year after guiding Ohio to its fi rst MAC East Division championship, the program’s fi rst MAC title of any kind since 1968. Ohio’s invitation to the 2007 GMAC Bowl marked the Bobcats’ fi rst bowl game since that same 1968 season. Solich was rewarded with 2006 MAC Coach of the Year honors, marking the third time in eight seasons as a head coach that he had won his league’s coach of the year award.

• After 11 wins in the previous four seasons, Solich has guided the Bobcats to 19 victories in his fi rst three campaigns. Since his arrival, he has coached 17 All-MAC players, four more than the Bobcats’ total from 1999-2004. His charges have also gained national recognition. In 2005, Dion Byrum became Ohio’s fi rst non-special teams All-American since 1968, and three rookies have been honored on The Sporting News Freshman All-America squads. In the past three seasons, Bobcat players have been named to watch lists for such prestigious honors as the Butkus Award, the Lombardi Trophy, the Lott Trophy, the Maxwell Award and the Nagurski Trophy. Byrum was a semifi nalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented to the nation’s top defensive back, in 2005.

• Golden, in his analysis of the Bobcats’ recruiting class, noted that Ohio’s 2008 class of 20 signees delivered “something promising in every position group and had more players receiving elevated stars from Rivals and Scout than any other team in the league.”

• Ohio’s class was the only MAC class to receive a grade of “A.”

Non-Offensive TDsThe Bobcats have scored 22 non-offensive touchdowns since the start of the 2004 season.

Ohio head football coach Frank Solich announced in January that Steve Stanard has been hired as the school’s defensive line coach. Stanard fi lls the position vacated by Carl Pelini who became Nebraska’s defensive coordinator/defensive line coach.

Stanard has been the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach for Colorado State University for the past fi ve seasons where he mentored four student-athletes who collected All-Mountain West Conference honors, three of whom were defensive linemen. One of Stanard’s prized pupils has been CSU linebacker Jeff Horinek, who led the Rams with 94 tackles and earned honorable mention All-MWC honors, while boasting Academic All-District honors from CoSIDA.

In 2006, CSU fi nished among the MWC’s top four schools in scoring defense, pass defense, pass defense effi ciency, sacks, opponent fi rst downs and opponent third down conversions. That year, the Rams also had the distinction of being the only school in the conference to boast three tacklers (Mike Pagnotta, Klint Kubiak and Luke Adkins) in the MWC’s top 10.

His Rams led the conference in pass defense in 2004 and 2005 and fi nished in the top half of the league in the category in four of his fi ve seasons in Fort Collins, Colorado.
