There’s a wealth of technology behind Sierra’s

outstanding trailering capabilities. Sierra heavy-

duty trucks with the optional Duramax Diesel

6.6L V-8 Engine use the Allison six-speed

transmission with tap-shifting. It allows you

to activate Tow/Haul mode simply by pressing

a button at the end of the shift lever. This

feature raises upshift points to use more of

the engine’s power for strong acceleration,

and raises downshift points to help slow your

truck using engine braking. In addition, Grade

Braking and Cruise Grade Braking are auto-

matically activated in Tow/Haul mode but are

disengaged in Range Selection Mode. Both

features help you maintain control on down-

hills. With Grade Braking, when you tap the

brakes, the transmission analyzes speed, accel-

eration and engine torque and, if appropriate,

automatically downshifts. Cruise Braking (in-

cluded only in combination with the Duramax

Diesel) functions when you’ve set the cruise

control, and detects when you’re accelerating

on a downhill and automatically downshifts.

Sierra 1500-series and heavy-duty pickups

offer an optional trailer brake controller

(above). It’s completely integrated within

Sierra’s electrical system and its antilock

braking system. It allows your trailer’s

brakes to operate simultaneously with the

vehicle’s brakes. The trailer brake controller

switch is located on the lower left part of

the instrument panel.

The standard recirculating-ball steering

system features a cast-iron housing. The

system provides you with an enhanced on-

center feel and a greater feeling of control.

FRONT SUSPENSION

Independent torsion-bar suspension allows

high gross vehicle weight ratings and superb

load-carrying capability. It also helps produce

a smooth and comfortable ride.

REAR SUSPENSION

Heavy-duty twin-tube, gas-charged shock

absorbers help produce a smooth ride under

loaded and unloaded conditions.

HEAVY-DUTY CHASSIS HIGHLIGHTS.The available GM-exclusive Eaton Automatic

Locking Rear Differential (right) is designed

to improve traction at lower speeds. It en-

gages when the speed difference between

the rear tires reaches approximately 100 rpm.

Once it engages, both rear wheels rotate at

the same speed, providing more of the drive-

line’s torque to the tire with better traction.

Available on all 1500-series and heavy-duty

models; standard on Sierra Denali.

REAR PARKING ASSIST A Rear Parking Assist system (above) is available on 1500-series and heavy-

duty SLE and SLT Extended and Crew Cabs and is standard on Sierra Denali. It

uses ultrasonic waves to identify the presence of certain stationary objects

as you travel slowly in reverse, and warns you with a chime and a series of

LED lights on the rear pillar.

The front frame section is hydroformed to

increase structural rigidity by producing

more consistent steel-wall thickness.

HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL

The mid-frame section uses a lipped C-section,

which is roll-formed and draw-bent during the

manufacturing process for maximum strength.

CONTROLSTABILITRAK® STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM WITH TRACTION CONTROL. The GMC Sierra is designed to handle curves with a firm grip, capitalizing

on a wide front track and sturdy frame. That means Sierra can manage

the road with handling that feels smooth and crisp, even while carrying

a heavy load.1 A standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System makes sure

each tire is properly inflated for optimum handling and control, and

warns you which tire is low via the Driver Information Center (does not

monitor spare tire; not available on dual-rear-wheel models). In addition,

1500-series models feature the StabiliTrak Stability Control System

with Traction Control (standard on Crew Cab; available on Extended

Cab). The system has sensors that read the position of your steering

wheel, vehicle speed, brake pressure, lateral acceleration and turning

rate, then feed the data to an onboard computer. If your Sierra is not

responding adequately to your steering input, the computer adjusts

engine speed and brake pressure to any individual wheel to help keep

you on track. Its rollover-avoidance feature can help mitigate roll forces.

Its sensors are programmed to proactively predict and help counteract

vehicle “tip-up” on a flat road surface.

FRONT SUSPENSION

Sierra 1500-series models feature front

suspension with a coil-over-shock design

that has less mass than the typical

torsion bar system. It provides better

ride quality and handling everywhere

from rough roads to smooth highways.

RACK-AND-PINION STEERING

Rack-and-pinion steering provides precise

performance and an on-center feel. It also

offers low-speed assist for easier maneuvering

in tight spots.

REAR SUSPENSION

Leaf-spring design provides a smooth ride

while maintaining outstanding load-carrying

capability. Rear shock absorbers are mounted

wide apart and upright for controlled move-

ment over rough surfaces.

Z71 OFF-ROAD SUSPENSION PACKAGE

GMC’s legendary Z71 off-road suspension is

available on most Sierra models. The package

includes the GM-exclusive Eaton Automatic

Locking Rear Differential and skid plates.

FRONT HIGH-STRENGTH RAILS

The front frame is boxed and hydroformed to

maximize strength and fit better at bolting

points. The result is improved isolation from the

road and smooth and comfortable performance

on the highway.

REAR HIGH-STRENGTH RAILS

The rear rails are boxed back to the spare

tire area and provide greater rail height than

C-channels. They’re thick where loads are more

likely and taper toward the rear, optimizing

strength and ride quality.

WIDE TRACK

The chassis’s wide-track design helps provide

confident handling while cornering.

INDEPENDENCETHE ETHANOL ALTERNATIVE. Sierra 1500 Series pickups are available with a

Vortec 5.3L V-8 “FlexFuel” Engine that can run

on a blend of ethanol and gasoline called E85

(because it’s 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent

gasoline). E85 is an alternative fuel made mostly

in the United States from corn and other agricul-

tural products. The FlexFuel engine can run on

any combination of gasoline and E85. The Vortec

5.3L V-8 Flex-Fuel Engine produces fewer carbon

emissions with E85, with no tradeoff in horse-

power or torque. E85 fuel availability varies by

deactivate two cylinders on each bank under lighter-load

conditions by using oil pressure to control special hydraulic

valve lifters . When the AFM system deactivates the cylin-

ders, the bottom of each lifter rides up and down on the

cam lobe but the top of the lifter does not move the push

rod , so the valve is not actuated and combustion in

that cylinder stops.

Figure 2 shows a cutaway view of a special hydraulic valve

lifter in a Vortec Engine equipped with an Active Fuel Manage-

ment system. In this view the system is active, meaning the

engine is operating on four cylinders. The cam lobe is

pushing up on the hydraulic valve lifter , but “lost motion”

(telescoping action) occurs within the lifter body so that the

top of the lifter does not move the push rod .

for starting, idling, and torque-intensive tasks like accelerating or towing loads. But in everyday driving, once the Sierra has reached cruising speed,

Active Fuel Management can temporarily deactivate four of the eight cylinders. Of course, V-8 power is always right there, on tap. And when the

Active Fuel Management engine switches between four-cylinder and V-8 operation, it’s so seamless, you may never notice the transition. In testing,

the system increased fuel efficiency by up to six percent.1 If you’re looking for even more horsepower, selected half-ton Sierra models are available

DUAL-STAGE FRONTAL AIR BAGS6

Standard dual-stage front air bags feature

sensors that gauge the severity of a crash and

determine whether to deploy one or two levels

of inflation, a refinement that helps reduce

risk of injury to passengers. Sierra 1500-series

models feature a passenger sensing system for

the outboard front passenger, which automati-

cally turns off the air bag if the passenger is

under an appropriate weight.

ONSTAR2

The first year of OnStar comes standard with a

one year Safe & Sound Plan.2 It includes ser-

vices like Remote Door Unlock,3 Stolen Vehicle

Location Assistance3 and access to Hands-Free

Calling.4 If you’re involved in a collision, even

if your air bags don’t deploy, your vehicle can

automatically send a signal to OnStar, where an

TRAILERING WITH YOUR SIERRASierra is built strong and durable to handle the demands of trailering. Certain equipment that prepares Sierra for trailering is standard on every Sierra: power steering, power brakes, a large fuel tank, a 145-amp alternator and a front stabilizer bar. Also required and available (some items are standard on certain models) are special transmission oil and engine oil coolers. For other available trailering-related equipment, talk to your dealer. You’ll need a hitch, of course, and a selection of hitch types is available, either as factory-installed equipment or from your dealer. In addition, if you plan to trailer frequently, you should equip your Sierra with the available trailering package (RPO Z82). This package includes a weight-distributing hitch platform. Also required with this package are a hitch ball, a mounting head or drawbar and, possibly, weight-distributing and anti-sway assemblies; these are available through after-market sources. If you have any questions about trailering with a Sierra, before you buy, feel free to ask your dealer for a copy of the GMC Trailering Guide. Be sure to read it and use it as a guide before you hitch a trailer to your truck.

OFF-ROADING WITH YOUR FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE SIERRA When you go off-road in your Sierra, you should take care to make sure your driving is appropriate to the vehicle and the environment. Be sure to read the “Off-Road Driving” section in your Owner’s Manual. Avoid sharp turns and abrupt maneuvers. Failure to operate vehicle correctly off-road could result in loss of vehicle control or vehicle rollover. When you are off-road, make sure that all cargo is properly loaded and secured. Use boxes to organize cargo and use nets and tie-downs to secure it. Wherever possible, use established trails, roads and other areas that have been set aside for public off-road recreational driving. And obey posted regulations. Don’t drive on private property without the permission of the owner; in some states, you must have it in writing. Avoid any driving practice that could harm the environment or hurt wildlife, like wheel-spinning, breaking down trees, driving through streams or driving over soft ground. And never park your vehicle over dry grass or other materials that could catch fire from the heat of the vehicle’s exhaust system.
