Year after year, the Johnson County CommunitCollege womens and mens cross country teams finthemselves in the right place at the right time: itspeak performance at seasons end. And, althoughLady Luck invariably makes her presence known attimes, the teams success in the final stretch has little to do with mere chance.

Under head coach Mike Bloemker, the JCCC harriers consistently reach their peak goals through hardwork, gritty perseverance and intelligent running. As he enters his 11th season at the helm, Bloemker has taken the Cavaliers to heights never before achievedin JCCCs proud cross country history. Under his watchful eye, Cavalier cross country and halmarathon runners have earned 34 All-American citations, two individual national champions and twoRegion VI champions. Additionally, an individualfrom the JCCC womens team has won eight of ninindividual conference titles, while a male JCCC competitor has been crowned champion three times overthat span.

There have been many memorable appearances bCavalier teams at the NJCAA cross country meetsincluding a national champion by the women i2000, and five runner-up finishes, three by thwomen and two by the men. Bloemker has won 16 of the 20 possible East Jayhawk Conference titles, captured five Region VI titles and finished runner-usix times. Eighteen of his 20 cross country teamhave registered a top-10 national finish, including 1top five finishes.

In 2008, the Cavaliers hope to continue working timprove upon their tradition of excellence. However, both teams will have to overcome key losses to the program. On the womens side, the programs mostdecorated athlete, Christ Heideman, graduated lasspring. She earned 11 All-America honors during hertwo seasons competing for the maroon and gold.

While Heideman will be greatly missed, the cupboardis far from bare for Bloemker. He returns five runners from a year ago, and has added a former track standout from a few seasons back.

Leading the Lady Cavaliers in 2008 are sophomoresFrancis Gipson of Overland Park, Kan., and TemerYimer of Riverside, Mo.. Both had tremendous freshman campaigns. Gibson earned all-conferenceand all-region accolades while helping JCCC win aconference title and finish runner-up in the regionShe placed fourth in the conference, and 10th in theregion. Earlier in the season, Gibson was medalist at the Highland Invitational, and recorded a third-placfinish at the Cavalier Cup.

Yimer earned NJCAA Coaches All-American at cross country nationals, crossing the finish in 27th placeoverall. Her time of 18:40.35 ranks as the third-best time posted in a national championship by a JCCC runner. She also garnered all-conference and all-region, placing fifth and 12th respectively. She also recorded three other top 10 finishes on the season.

Also back are Renae DuPree of Overland Park, Kan., Kaitlyn Flynn of Hutchinson, Kan., and HeatherKochie of Cleveland, Mo. All three gained valuableexperience as freshmen, and will be looked to assophomores to elevate their production, and make animpact.

Bloemker also has brought back Sarah Stark, who waswith the team in 2004, but did not compete. She did however, play a key role during the 2005 track seasonStark ran a leg on the indoor national champion4x800 relay, which earned her NJCAA and CoachesAll-American. She also earned NJCAA and Coaches

All-American running a leg on the distance medleyrelay that placed second at nationals. That also set the school record. Stark earned individual Coaches All-American in the 3,000-meters with a fifth-placefinish.

Bloemker welcomes six freshman to the womens squad; Roxanne Cabera of Miami, Fla., Emily Crewsof Stilwell, Kan., Courtney Falcon of Salina, Kan.,Kayla Harris of Soldier, Kan., Haley Snow ofPleasanton, Kan., and Paige Vass of Salina, Kan. All six bring solid prep credentials and each hope tomake an impact this season.

The men face a completely different scenario. OnlJustin Rose of Louisburg, Kan., returns this season.Gone are seven members of last years team that posted a top 10 finish at nationals, and third place finisat the half marathon championships.

Rose had a solid freshman campaign, and while thlone veteran, Bloemker is confident he is an athlete he can build around this season. In 2007, Rose had four top 10 finishes, including a 10th place finish at East Jayhawk Conference Championship.

Bloemkers nine newcomers give him excellent depthbut two of his newcomers were solid performers forthe track team last year. Brian Beachum of Wichita, Kan., and Redell Frazier of Salina, Kan., accounted for six all-conference honors. Frazier also earned two all-region honors, and Beachum garnered CoachesAll-American running a leg on JCCCs indoor 4x800that placed fifth nationally.

Bloemker will also look to true freshmen Daniel Barlow of San Antonio, Texas, James Carter of Bonner Springs, Kan., Phillip Hickman of BlueSprings, Mo., Rico Koth of Kansas City, Mo., JoshuaLacer of Manhattan, Kan., Adrian Marquez oHutchinson, Kan., and Preston Speakman ofLeawood, Kan., to step in and make an immediatecontribution.

Bloemker has stated before each season that he has the talent to contend for a national championshipbased on his teams overall depth and commitment tothe get the job done. In 2008, the Cavaliers againpossesses tremendous depth, with the 12 runners forthe women, and 10 for the men. With the depth antalent Bloemker has assembled, he again enters a crosscountry campaign optimistic about his teams chancesof contending.

I expect a lot out of people, Bloemker said. Thedont have to be the most talented, but if they workhard and are committed to what I tell them, they willgo a long way.

Bloemker feels his team has tremendous potentialand is extremely excited for the season to get under way.

This group has the makings of a great team, saidBloemker. Our depth is incredible. This group ofyoung women and men are focused and pushing hardeveryday for the opportunity to win a national title. Ifeel good about the direction this team is going.

Johnson County will again tackle a tough schedule, which Bloemker feels will better prepare his team fora title run in November.

I believe facing tougher competition will help us atnationals, Bloemker said. Plus, this provides ourkids some exposure to four-year schools.

Head Coach 11th Season University of Central Missouri As only the second head coach in the history of the Johnson County Community College cross country program,Mike Bloemker has upheld the JCCC tradition of excellence as the Cavaliers harrier program continues to rank among the nations best.

Bloemker has found tremendous success while at JCCC. As he enters his 11th season at the helm, Bloemker has taken the Cavaliers to heights never before achieved in JCCCs proud cross country history. Under his watchful eye,Cavalier cross country and half marathon runners have earned 34 All-American citations, two individual nationalchampions and two Region VI champions. Additionally, an individual from the JCCC womens team has won eightof nine individual conference titles, while a male JCCC competitor has been crowned champion three times overthat span.

There have been many memorable appearances by Cavalier teams at the NJCAA cross country meets, including anational champion by the women in 2000, and five runner-up finishes, three by the women and two by the men.Bloemker has won 16 of the 20 possible East Jayhawk Conference titles, captured five Region VI titles and finishedrunner-up six times. Eighteen of his 20 cross country teams have registered a top-10 national finish, including 10 top five finishes.

In half marathon national championships, Bloemker has won more national championships than any coach in thecountry, leading his womens teams to half marathon national titles in 2003, 2005 and 2006. The other three cham-pionships his team has competed, JCCC has finished second. While his mens teams have not won a title, they havefinished runner-up in three championships, and finished third in 2007.

Last fall, Bloemker led both teams to top 10 finishes nationally, with the womens coming in seventh overall, andthe men posting a ninth-place finish. The teams capped the season with top finishes at the half marathon. The women raced to a second-place finish, while the men came in third overall. The season was highlighted by the performance of Christa Heideman, who etched her name among the all-time great performers in JCCC history, byearning her 10th and 11th All-America honor of her career, which tied as the most decorated athlete in school his-tory Marti Cisper and Amy Gochnour. Heideman would later add two more All-American honors during the trackseason, making her number one all-time.

In 2006, Bloemker led both teams to top-10 national finishes in cross country. The Lady Cavaliers finished runner-up to South Plains at the cross country championship, but came away national champions at the NJCAA HalfMarathon Championship, capturing their third national championship. The men finished 10th overall in crosscountry, but posted their third straight runner-up finish in half marathon. Christa Heideman and Jackie Jamison each earned All-American in both championships, and James Tong garnered All-American at the Half MarathonChampionship. Bloemker also coached the women to a team conference championship and a runner-up finish inthe region standings, while the men finished second and third respectively in the two championships.

The 2005 cross country season resembled aroller coaster ride. While both teams cap-tured East Jayhawk Conference crowns, they followed with disappointing efforts atNationals, with the women placing ninth, and the men 12th overall. However, the JCCC womens and mens cross countryteams redeemed themselves at the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships. Bloemker led the womens team to its second National Championship, and the menposted its second straight runner-up finish.Additionally, Felicia Fleming and EstherMathais for the women, and Kory Cool forthe men, garnered All-America accolades.

In 2004, both teams registered eighth-place finishes in their respective nationalchampionships. The men also capturedEast Jayhawk Conference and Region VIchampionships, while the women won theconference championship, finished run-ner-up in the Region VI meet and Bloemker was named the Region VI MensCoach of the Year.

In 2003, the womens team again posted arunner-up national finish, after they cap-tured East Jayhawk Conference and RegionVI Championships. Gochnour again wasthe teams top performer, placing secondoverall. She capped her amazing careerleading JCCC to a national championship at the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships in Wichita, Kan. The 2002 campaign saw both teams post runner-up finishes atnationals, helping JCCC capture the Pepsi Cup for best combindedfinishes, the second Cup of Bloenmkers tenure at JCCC. The 2002 season also showcased two of the best compeititors in JCCC history.Lyudmila Anderson and Gochnour raced to a one-two fnish atnationals. Anderson recorded a cross country hat trick, winning theconference, region and national titles. She also set the school school records for the top time in school history, and the top top time in anational championship. She also was the first individual to win a national championship in cross country.

The 2000 JCCC women harriers made history, racing to its first evernational championship, as four individuals placed in the top 15, allearning All-American honors.. That proved to be enough to edgeColby Community College and Schoolcraft College for the NJCAAD-II National Championship. It was also sweet revenge for JCCC. Just a week earlier, Colby edged Johnson County to win the RegionVI D-II title.

We actually went to the awards ceremony thinking we finished second, Bloemker said. When we heard we won, it was overwhelming. I really think the girls thought they could win, but for it tomaterialize is amazing. This is the most exciting thing Ive been around.

The JCCC womens and mens team also were honored as National Champions for the best combined program in the country. This is also a first for the JCCC cross country programs.

In addition, Bloemker was honored as the coach of the year by theNJCAA and NJCAA Coaches Association.

In 1999, the men followed their conference championship bywinning the RegionVI title, and Bloemker was named the RegionVI mens coach of the year. At nationals competing in theirfirst Division II Championship, the men nearly made aclean sweep of theirchampionships, placing second nationally. The women finished a very respectable seventh.

Brian Batliner Assistant Coach 1st Season Johnson County Community College/UMKC '08

Brian Batliner enters his first season as a member of the JCCC cross country and track and field staff. While new to the coaching ranks, Batliner is not a stranger to JCCC, and brings an impressive background in cross country and track and field.

Before joining the staff at Johnson County, Batliner was a standout runner for the JCCC cross country and track teamsfrom 2003-05. He helped the cross country team to a fourth place national finish in 2003, and an eighth place finish in 2004. He was a five time All-American, five-time All-Region VI performer, seven-time All-Kansas JayhawkConference performer, and two-time conference indoor champion in the mile run.

As a freshman, Batliner helped the Cavaliers cross country team to runner-up finishes in the conference and region, placing seventh and 12th respectively. His seventh place finish earned him all-conference accolades. He ended the season with a 31st place showing at the NJCAA Championship. During the indoor track season his freshman year,Batliner earned two NJCAA All-America certificates at the NJCAA Indoor Championship. He placed ninth in the 3,000-meters and placed eighth in the mile run. He became just the fourth individual in team history to earn All-American in the indoor 3,000-meters, and the sixth JCCC

runner to earn that honor in the mile. Prior to nationals, Batliner was the East Jayhawk champion in the mile run and as a member of the distance medley relay team. He also placed sixthand second in those events in the Region VI standings, earning all-region recognition. He also earned all-conference honors in the 1,000-meters with a third place showing. Batliner followed with equally impressive indoor and outdoor track seasons his sophomore year. At indoor nationals in 2005, Batliner raced to a sixth place finish in the mile, earning NJCAA CoachesAll-American. He finished the race in 4:25.58, the sixth-best time by a Cavalier at nationals.Earlier in the campaign, Batliner won his second conference championship in the mile run, andplaced second in the region, earning all-conference and all-region honors in that event.
