Jacey Bagwell’s stocking is already full! She is an adventurous, energetic younglady with many talents and interests. Before her diagnosis of osteosarcoma (bone cancer), Jacey was involved in softball, dancing andrunning. She hopes to get back to those activities when she is off treatment. She may also want to get back to her career as a performer — in first grade, she sang a solo, “Come and Buy Balloons,” in a school production.

Jacey and her attending physician, Dr. Dennis Hughes, have wrapped up several things together. The first wasto treat her osteosarcoma with a limb salvage instead of an amputation — a metal rod replaced the affectedbone in her leg. The rod can be lengthened as shegrows. This ingenious solution is working very wellfor Jacey. They also collaborated on a field trip toMinute Maid Park in September, 2007. Jacey and Dr. Hughes had the rare privilege of going out on thefield before a Houston Astros game! Jacey’s caringspirit also showed up while she was being treated.Although she is shy, she has a big heart and likes to do things for others, including the other pediatric patients.

A native of Pauline, South Carolina, Jacey, her mother Holly and younger brother Lawsonspent quite a bit of time in Houston. Her father,Jay, stayed in close touch by phone — he had tostay in South Carolina. They have returned home, but will continue to check in with the Children’sCancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Centerto assess her progress. Jacey will be a third graderthis year, able to slip right back into school withher peers. Jacey has learned to make lemonadefrom lemons. To prove that point, friendsdesigned a bright yellow T-shirt just for her. In turquoise letters, the front of the shirt said,“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”On the back is the drawing of a lemonadestand titled, “A Stand for Jacey.” With greatsupport from friends and family, Jacey’s life will be filled with many gifts!

Stacy Duff doesn’t need a stocking — she created the beautiful one that stars all overthis catalog and is featured as a resin ornament, Radko ornament and several otherproducts. Stacy also created the charming “Mr. Claus,” who makes an appearance ona number of products, and the beautiful “Nativity” in this catalog. Her artistic talentsand creativity are obvious, and they have helped her through some rough times.

Stacy and her family had an empty stocking a few years ago. In 2005, her father,Stafford Duff, was assigned to a tour of duty in Iraq. While he was away with theArmy, their home burned down and the family lost everything. Before theyrecovered from that tragedy, Stacy was diagnosed with large B-cell lymphoma (non-Hogkins). Through it all, Stacy, her dad, her mother Tammy and her younger brother Stafford Jr. have stood together. Their strong faith in God played a major role in overcoming all these problems, especially in helping Stacy get well and stay strong and positive.

Stacy’s cancer became obvious when her knee began to hurt while trying out for thedance team at her high school. Then it started swelling, and she headed for thedoctor. It took some time to eliminate other problemsbefore an MRI with an orthopedist made the diagnosisclear. She was quickly off to the Children’s CancerHospital at M. D. Anderson for treatment.Chemotherapy required her to stay in the hospital for a week and then go home for two weeks. This cycle continued for six months. She hasbeen in remission and off-treatment sinceFebruary, 2006.

Stacy did not attend school in the hospitalclassroom, but she had a private tutor that kepther on track for graduation from Elsik High Schoolin Alief, Texas in May of 2007. She is currentlyenrolled at the University of Houston Downtowncampus, majoring in Business Management — but she might change her major to fashion design.(Remember how creative she is!) She also works at Macy’s in the fine jewelry department in hopesthat her experience working in retail will boost her career.

Stacy’s stocking is full now, replenished with her charm, intelligence and the many talents that bode well for her future.

Little boys are made of “frogs and snails and puppy dog tails,” or so that old nurseryrhyme goes. So what do you put in a little boy’s stocking? For Larry Lopez, only 4 years old, you will need at least a dozen cars — those small metal ones that littleboys can hold in their hands and “zoom” on table tops, under the sofa and around a track. He already has a big collection, but he needs a new one every time he goesto the store with his mother Melva.

Larry was only 2 years old when his family doctor noticed a growing lump on hisneck. He was quickly referred to the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. AndersonCancer Center. The lump was biopsied, and the diagnosis came back quickly:lymphoma. Treatment began almost immediately. He spent two months in thehospital and had six rounds of chemotherapy. Treatment continued for two years.Fortunately, radiation and surgery were not necessary. During that time, he loved toplay in the PediDome — basketball is his favorite sport, and he enjoyed the hoopand the balls there. (NOTE: Children with cancer are children first; patients, second. The PediDome inside the Children’s Cancer Hospital is a large room where children have art class, seasonal celebrations and where they can play hard, but safely! Inside the Dome children find a basketball hoop, assortedpedal cars and wagons, and other toys that helpthem keep up with being children, instead of just patients.)

Larry also connected with his coordinatingphysician, Dr. Cesar Nunez, and UtteshaLumpkin, one of the child life specialists. She made sure he had a birthday cake onhis birthday — only one example of thecaring atmosphere within the Children’sCancer Hospital.

A healthy, energetic 4-year-old now, Larryloves to color, paint, race his cars while he watches car races on TV, sing alongwith Elmo on Sesame Street and play withhis 14-month-old brother David. Hisfavorite foods are spaghetti and quesadillas. He will start Pre-K at the local elementaryschool this fall. Today his stockingis filled not only with cars, but also with goodhealth and a brightoutlook on life.

It’s very easy to fill Shae Jester’s stocking! She is a very feminine little girl, and sheloves to dress up. Her grandmother buys the smallest size high heels she can find atdiscount stores so Shae can wear them with her assortment of costumes and oldjewelry. She dances to Hannah Montana, her favorite star, and she loves her new dogBailey, a Black Lab, and her cat, Mooshie. You can also give her things for her babydolls. She takes very good care of all of them. At night they have to be laid outperfectly and covered with little blankets.

This may sound like an idyllic young life, but Shae and her family have also battledcancer. In the summer of 2007, her family was preparing to move from Blanco, Texasto Evanston, Wyoming. Shae’s dad is a wildlife biologist, and he had been hired by theNature Conservancy of Wyoming. At the going away party the night before they leftTexas, three-year old Shae was very sick. Her leg began hurting, and that ache grewinto an excruciating pain. The move to Wyoming had to be delayed until mom, dadand big sister Shelby could find out what was wrong with Shae. It was quicklydiscovered that she had neuroblastoma—a tumor under her right kidney was pushingon her spine and causing the pain in her leg. Surgery removed 90 percent of the tumorand was followed by chemotherapy. Her hair and eyelashes disappeared during thechemo. Much to her mother’s relief, hair and thick, long eyelashes have reappeared!

Dad had to go on to Wyoming while mom and Shelbymoved in with family in Houston for Shae’s treatment.During her treatment at the Children’s Cancer Hospitalat M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Shae connectedwith her primary physician, Dr. Peter Zage, clinicnurse Colette Badeaux, nurse practitioner PegParmeter and Cad Willeford, one of the child lifespecialists at the Children’s Cancer Hospital. Shehelped nurses flush a port (the area where chemotherapy connects to the patient), pulled offband-aids and helped with other simple“medical” tasks. Shae is already talkingabout being a nurse when she growsup. In the meantime, she is a busyyoung lady. She loves to do yogawith her grandmother, saying“moo” instead of “ohm” whenthey are meditating! Let’s hopethat the rest of all the packageslife gives to Shae will be filledwith good health, happinessand success!
