Welcome Members.

Anne and I have just returned from the Northern Territory where we have been hiking the Larapinta Trail along the incredibly scenic MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs.

Managed over 200km, falling short by one days walk due to running out of time for our flight back.

Not only do these ranges offer a very challenging hiking trail there are also a number of 4wd tracks to scenic spots and quiet bush camps to keep in mind for future club trips. And the weather was wonderful!

Apologies for absence at the next GM, we will be in Southern Africa until the end of August, but as usual, your very capable Committee will ensure things continue to function.

The Pierre Repairre went WELL if you pardon the pun and the Dunny received much needed attention. The Well 6 campsite is now rejuvenated and ready for future CSR travellers to enjoy.

Other members are still on the Karijini trip as I write; reports will

soon be rolling in. Your Committee made the decision to omit GM minutes from the Mag to create more space for Trip Reports, Promos etc, however, they will still be available on the club website or on request to the Secretary.

The Camp Oven Cookout is coming up soon, very popular in the past, be sure not to miss this one.

David Peck will lead East of Armadale day trip, a very scenic drive on Forest tracks in the Wandoo behind Mt Cooke.

Hope to catch up with you on our return to Perth in September as we come into springtime and our increasing calendar of events.

Safe Travelling.

Simon Newton.

TRIP CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT August

The trip to the Pierre Repairre went ahead with Ian & Nina, Jim & Joy, John & his mum Pauline, Dawn, Keith, & Karl able to go as planned. But I ended up not leaving until a few days later and was able to catch up with everyone at well 6 for a night. Then Dawn, Keith, Karl & I headed off to Serpents Glen at the Carnarvon Ranges. Unfortunately Dawn hit a rock with her automatic transmission sump and sprung a leak, which we attempted to patch up but it didn’t hold. We ended up taking the sump off and Keith took it up to Virgin Springs where the Geraldton 4WD club members were staying and they were able to patch it up for us (and supply some more oil). We left Serpents Glen early to get it welded at Newman. We then met up with Tom & Jenni, and Josan who were going to join us for the Karijini to Coast trip. One of the highlights for me was to stop at Wunna Munna which is 77 km north of Newman and is a small gorge with an excellent display of aboriginal rock art, and only 2km from the highway. Karijini was windy and cool and we were a bit disappointed in the lack of hot water available in the showers, but we made it down all the gorges which were impressive. We were lucky enough to get camping at Crossing pool at Millstream as the number of campsites has been reduced after recent cyclones, and it was lovely camping on the river bank under shady trees with al the birds around. Warroora station was much warmer and we were able to get some skindiving in, but then some showers started and the tracks were closed so we made a hasty retreat down slippery tracks to Coral Bay. All in all a great trip and I would like to thank everyone for their help and patience as this was the first trip I have lead (I know you usually start with a day trip but I wanted to go to the Pilbara).

I will be leading my second trip (a day trip this time) “East of Armadale” on Sunday 24th August – see the promo for more details.

If you are interested in Keith’s trip to Barrabup sanctuary on the long weekend in September I would strongly advise you to get your name down quick as places are limited. The website is well worth looking at as it tells of all the beaut things to see down there.

Another trip to Lochada is planned for October 9-13 and it will be on a first come first in basis with a possible limit on numbers.

See you out there David Peck

Last year the Sunday breakfast at the hotel proved very popular so we plan to do it again this year.

East of Armadale

This trip is taken out of 4WD days out of Perth and includes good forestry tracks and firebreaks with no extreme sections, and is therefore suitable for everyone.

It will pass through Wandoo woodlands, home of the Numbat but it is unlikely we will see any as they hide at the first sign of danger. When I did this trip previously I was surprised at the number of kangaroos we saw both in the bush and on adjacent farms as we travelled up the firebreaks.

Stops are planned at Sullivan rock (with the opportunity to climb the nearby 500 metre high Mount Vincent) and Christmas tree well.

Total distance approx 240 km

CAMP OVEN COOKOUT

16th August - Dwellingup Chalet & Caravan Park

Picture this: A huge cooking fire, and the smell of smoke in the crisp, bush air. Tarps and tents in the forest mist. Fifteen camp ovens, containing everything from cheesecake to curry, baking under watchful eyes. Starters, mains, side dishes and desserts, all served out of the white-hot ashes. Thirty-two absolutely satisfied Subaru club members!

That was our last Camp Oven Cookout, and it is time to do it again. Get ready for the best meal you’ll ever have – and the best instruction you’ll ever receive in how to use your camp oven. Work with experts as we all pitch in to make damper, bread, roasts, stews, dumplings, cakes, pies – anything is possible in a camp oven!

Our location is Dwellingup, at the Dwellingup Chalet and Caravan Park, with good camping facilities and chalets for the faint-hearted.

One unique feature of previous cookouts was experimenting with wood. We tried Illyarie, Banksia, Banksia Nuts, Snappy Gum, Mallee Root and also used charcoal briquettes and the usual jarrah off cuts. The fuel used can make a huge difference to the way you use your oven. So bring all the wood you can lay your hands on, and we’ll repeat the experiment.

We also had an assortment of camp ovens: the usual cast iron, a fabulous and fanciful African camp pot with legs, a spun steel camp oven, and a tin bedourie. This year we hope to see some Cobb cookers, too! Again, the type of oven you use will make a difference. Camp oven cookery is an art, not a science!

Over the years we’ve proven that ANYTHING can be cooked in a camp oven – breads, soups, stews, roasted meats, hot cross buns, quandong pies, cheesecakes, even a soufflé! So come along and help us stretch the boundaries.

Page 9: 2008-08

Page 9

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

Location: Dwellingup Chalet and Caravan Park. If you are going to camp, please let me know and I will reserve a camp site for you – the cost is $20 per unpowered tent site for two people. For chalets, please book direct on 9538 1157 (ring for rates and accommodation info – from $30 to $150 per night).

Time: Arrive any time you like (no convoy). We will start the cooking fires at 12.00 on Saturday. Make sure you arrive well ahead of the time needed to prepare your dish. Where possible, desserts are cooked first then set aside so the camp ovens can be re-used to cook mains. Damper for afternoon tea, drinks at 5.30, and dinner when it is ready - hopefully 7.00.

Food: Sign up to bring something for dinner. Not everything will require a camp oven (salads, etc). Ring to discuss or sign up at the meeting.

Bring: Normal camping gear. There are showers, toilet, water, etc. Bring wet weather gear and pole/tarps if you have them – just in case

.

Wood: Bring your own if you are able – ring to discuss. It doesn’t need to be special wood; off cuts will be appreciated for the campfire.

Need Help? If you are a first timer, ring to discuss the types of dishes that can be easily cooked in a camp oven. If you would like to learn, but do not yet have a camp oven, you can borrow one! Ring for information. If you need some basic info or ideas for new recipes, check out a new site that has appeared since our last cookout: http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/index.htm

Info: Nina McLaren 0427936566 or 9448-5419 or [email protected] or speak to Ian or Simon at the next meeting.

Please E-mail your preferred dish that you are cooking to Nina ASAP to allow her to finish organising the cookout.

BARRABUP SANCTUARY – LWE 27-29 September Barrabup Sanctuary is situated 8km west of Nannup at ‘Quigup’ on the Old Barrabup Rd. It has a private campground which I have booked for the Queens Birthday long weekend in September. The camp holds 12 vehicles, 25 adults + children but we can fit in a couple more if need be.

The property contains 60 Hectares of mainly Jarrah/Marri association with Blackbutt, Banksia and River Gum along the Blackwood River. There is a diversity of habitat, ranging from river flat to ironstone ridge.

There are over 100 recorded varieties of Native orchids, which mostly flower in September, but some of which can be seen all year round. The property has a particularly high occurrence of native fauna, possibly due to its fire history in recent years, and birdlife abounds.

Barrabup Sanctuary is being developed as an open zoo, park and arboretum, with plans for the complete eradication and exclusion of cats, dogs and foxes with the gradual re-establishment of the original native flora and fauna.

Contact me or get your name down on the list at the next meeting as places are limited. Anyone wishing to stay down longer please contact me as soon as you can and I will try and arrange it with the Sanctuary. You can view their website

www.barrabupsanctuary.com.au for further information.

Depart: Saturday morning 8.30am for an 8.45am prompt start

Meet: Coventrys car park, corner of Albany Highway and Davis St, Kelmscott

Fuel: Full tank (there is a filling station almost opposite Coventrys)

I took my Forester in for its first service today to Osborne Park Subaru. When they asked me how it was going I told them I was not happy about the way they had mounted the trailer lights socket as it was easy to damage.

They said they had a new way they were using on the Tribeca which involved mounting it in the spare wheel well with a flat lead to feed out when the towbar was in use. They've done it so now I've got no socket to get ripped off when off road.

Haven't tried it with a trailer yet but it sure looks good. Also got a SubuXtreme sump guard on it now after destroying the useless plastic splash guard on the Mundaring trip. $365 from Central 4WD. Osborne Park Subaru fitted it for free.

Have suggested to them that they should be asking new Forester buy-ers if they intend taking the vehicle off road and offering an off road ac-cessory pack at the time of sale.

Desert Sands.

Dullsville to Birdsville!

Planning is underway for a crossing of The Simpson Desert, a 30 day trip starting May next year. This will be a Subaru only trip. If your vehicle is not suitable there will probably be the opportunity to share with some-one so don’t hesitate to apply. The plan is as follows.

Perth to Laverton, Anne Beadell Hwy to Coober Pedy, Oodnadatta, SA. Dalhousie Springs, NT across the Simpson to Birdsville. QLD. Birdsville Track to Marree, SA then through the magnificent Flinders Ranges to Port Augusta and home across the Nullarbor.

A minimum of 6 club trips required including 2 trips of 3 days or more and experience in on the move bush camping ( caravan park camping doesn’t count ) and the ability to get along with people 24 hours a day for 30 days.

A good sense of humour and adventure essential. Organize your holi-days or long service leave now and acquire the necessary experience if you don’t have it already. The triplogs are from Explore Oz, you can view the route on the web or loan my file of print outs.

Register your interest ASAP as the closing date is February 2009 to al-low time to obtain the necessary permits.

Contact trip leader Simon Newton. 94505953 or the Presidents Email.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS

Mystery Trip: 13 July 2008 It was a chilly Sunday morning as the small group of four Subarus as-sembled at the Centrepoint Midland carpark for the Mystery Trip. After the distribution and testing of the CB radios, we set off shortly after 9.00am for a ‘fun adventuresome day' of off-road driving. Martin and his son Dale led the group in their L Series, followed by three Foresters; Gary and his two boys Liam and Sean, new members and first timers on a club trip Pender and Ruth, with Peter bringing up the rear.

After heading west along the Great Eastern Highway, we turned right into Mundaring Weir Road and right again into Atkins Road. Martin and Peter had decided that the loop through the State Forest would provide the ideal warm-up to see how Gary and Pender would cope with the small challenges en-route to the North Ledge.

At about 10.00 am, we drove into the North Ledge car park for a tea and coffee stop. The hot coffee was most welcome, and provided an oppor-tunity for Martin and Peter to review the fundamentals of off-road driving. They also helped us regain our bearings by pointing out that, from the North Ledge, we were overlooking the Mundaring Dam to the south. The pit stop refreshed us for the challenges to follow.

Tea and coffee stop at North ledge

Page 17: 2008-08

Page 17

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

We then returned to the Great Eastern Highway and headed further west, turning right at the electricity substation just before the Sawyers Valley townsite. Less than 1 km along the pipeline track, we stopped to view the giant jarrah tree and sawpits near the track on our right. The stop was an opportunity to imagine, not only the magnificence of the original jarrah forest, but also the work of the men, the convict sawyers, who felled these trees and sawed them into planks by hand more than 100 years ago.

We then joined the powerline track and headed eastwards. The high voltage power line passes through the State Forest south of the Saw-yers Valley townsite, and carries electricity to the wheat belt area east of Perth. The rough and rocky sections of this track provided Gary and Pender with many challenges. The powerline track is very popu-lar for off-road driving, with quite a number of other 4WD vehicles off-roading on the day.

The first challenge was mud-slide hill, with its ledge half way to the top to trap the novices. With the ledge and the road surface softened by the 20 mm of rain that fell during the previous four days, the hill was not going to be a straightforward. Despite Martin’s impeccable demon-stration and clear instruc-tions, Gary needed two at-tempts and Pender three to reach the top. However, all memories of the unsuccess-ful attempts were immedi-ately erased by the thrill of having achieved the success. The ability of the Subarus to manage such a hill was amazing.

Further challenges included a water crossing and a washed

out gully. The gully was so deep that it had to be negotiated very slowly. At one stage, the rear right wheel of each car lifted completely off the ground (see photos). Lunch by the side of the road at 1.00 pm was a most welcome break. It was also a good time for the drivers to review progress so far and to check the condition of each other’s cars.

After lunch, we continued on over hills and through rocky gullies, over sheets of rough gravel rock and through washed out sections of track. Our final challenge was a long ascent to the top of a hill over exposed rocks with no topsoil to lessen the impact. However, with Martin and Peter’s expert guidance and advice via the CB radios, the Subaru convoy successfully reached the top.

It was a great adventuresome training day, and finished at the Lakes Roadhouse at 3.00 pm. The weather had been ideal for off-road driv-ing, cool with a cloud cover for most of the day. Ruth also kept a vigi-lant eye on the local flora, noting the wild flowers just starting to show their colours. These included flashes of blue leschenaultia, prolific yellow buttercups, the deep purple hovea, a pea commonly known as ‘bacon & eggs’, the white and the pink Swan River myrtle, and the red

and green kangaroo paw.

We learnt a lot about off-road driving. Martin and Peter’s knowledge, patience and confidence in us mastering all challenges were out-standing. As they said, “We know the Subarus can do it. It is just a mat-ter of showing and convincing the drivers how they can”. Thank you both for such a great day.

Adventure activity standards: There's a push to set a no. of stan-dards for groups like outs. This has been going on for over 12 months. We are not sure how this will effect clubs like ours, hence our interest in this. Indications are that a lot of onus is put on the trip leaders to do a number of things prior and during club trips.

Insurance officer went to SA & found an insurance form online which could be filled for both 3rd party & loss of Earnings insurance (income protection). This is already available to us. So providing the form is filled in online, we'd get income protection (for under 65's).

General Business

Suggestion that we could have a 'tips' list for new Subaru owners giving a guide on what we consider makes a car 'road ready'. A gen-eral discussion was held on the various mods. that can be made to vehicles, and examples of what people have done. Wheels, Fitting of power for trailers, fitting of aerials, tyres, pumps, gauges, lift kits, etc. etc. Belief is that the general way to get a car 'road ready' is much a personal one, and one gained from information gathered during initial trips with the club.

In general, don't until you've been on a couple of trips, so you can see what others have done.

They include: Herman's Hermits--- Mrs.. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Walker. Ringo Starr--- I Get By With a Little Help From Depends. The Bee Gees--- How Can You Mend a Broken Hip. Bobby Darin--- Splish, Splash, I Was Havin' a Flash. Roberta Flack--- The First Time Ever I Forgot Your Face. Johnny Nash--- I Can't See Clearly Now. Paul Simon--- Fifty Ways to Lose Your Liver The Commodores--- Once, Twice, Three Times to the Bathroom. Procol Harem--- A Whiter Shade of Hair. Leo Sayer--- You Make Me Feel Like Napping. The Temptations--- Papa's Got a Kidney Stone. Abba--- Denture Queen. Tony Orlando--- Knock 3 Times On The Ceiling If You Hear Me Fall. Helen Reddy--- I Am Woman, Hear Me Snore. Leslie Gore--- It's My Procedure, and I'll Cry If I Want To. And my favorite: Willie Nelson--- On the Commode Again
