NOTE: If you are going to remove heavy componentssuch as suspension or the fuel tank from the rear of thevehicle, first support the front of the vehicle with tallsafety stands. When substantial weight is removedfrom the rear of the vehicle, the center of gravity canchange, causing the vehicle to tip forward on the lift.

    1. Position the lift blocks (A) under the vehicles frontsupport points (B) and rear support points (C).

    2. Raise the lift a few inches, and rock the vehiclegently to be sure it is firmly supported.

    3. Raise the lift to its full height, and inspect thevehicle support points for solid contact with the liftblocks.

To support the vehicle on safety stands, use the samesupport points (B and C) as for a frame vehicle lift.Always use safety stands when working on or underany vehicle that is supported only by a jack.

    1. When lifting the front of the vehicle, set the parkingbrake. When lifting the rear of the vehicle, put theshift lever in the P position.

    2. Block the wheels that are not being lifted.

    3. Position the floor jack under the front jackingbracket (A) or the rear jacking bracket (B). Centerthe jacking bracket on the jack lift platform (C), andjack up the vehicle high enough to fit the safetystands under it.

    4. Position the safety stands under the support points, and adjust them so the vehicle is level.

    5. Lower the vehicle onto the stands.

  • Emergency Towing

    Towing

    A

    B

    C

    D

If the vehicle needs to be towed, call a professionaltowing service. Never tow the vehicle behind anothervehicle with a rope or chain. It is very dangerous.

There are three popular methods of towing a vehicle.

The operator loads the vehicleon the back of a truck.

To accommodate flat-bed equipment, the vehicle isequipped with front towing hooks (A), front tie downhook slots (B), rear towing hook (C), and rear tie downhook slots (D).

The towing hook can be used with a winch to pull thevehicle onto the truck, and the tie down hook slots canbe used to secure the vehicle to the truck.

  • Wheel Lift Equipment

This is an acceptable way of towing thevehicle.

    Sling-type Equipment

    1-101-10

    General Information

    Towing (contd) Parts Marking

The tow truck uses twopivoting arms that go under the tires (front or rear) andlifts them off the ground. The other two wheels remainon the ground.

The tow truck uses metalcables with hooks on the ends. These hooks go aroundparts of the frame or suspension, and the cables lift thatend of the vehicle off the ground. The vehiclessuspension and body can be seriously damaged if thismethod of towing is attempted.

If the vehicle cannot be transported by a flat-bed, itshould be towed with the front wheels off the ground. Ifthe vehicle is damaged, and the vehicle must be towedwith the front wheels on the ground, or if the vehicle istowed with all four wheels on the ground, do this:

Release the parking brake. Start the engine. Shift to the D position, then to the N position. Turn off the engine. Leave the ignition switch in the ACCESSORY (I)

position so the steering wheel does not lock. Make sure all accessories are turned off to minimize

    battery current draw.

It is best to tow the vehicle no farther than 50 miles(80 km), and keep the speed below 35 mph (55 km/h).

Improper towing preparation will damage thetransmission. Follow the above procedure exactly. Ifyou cannot shift the transmission or start the engine, the vehicle must be transported on a flat-bed.

Trying to lift or tow the vehicle by the bumpers willcause serious damage. The bumpers are notdesigned to support the vehicles weight.

To deter vehicle theft, certain major components aremarked with the vehicle identification number (VIN).Original parts have self-adhesive labels. Replacementbody parts have generic self-adhesive labels. Theselabels should not be removed. The original engine ortransmission VIN plates are not transferable to thereplacement engine or transmission.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the parts markinglabels during body repair. Mask the labels beforerepairing the part.

  • IMA System

    1-11

    Service Precautions

The Civic Hybrid has an Auto-Stop system that shuts the engine off under certain conditions to improve fuel economywhile the vehicle is at a stop. In Auto-Stop mode, driver input, such as releasing the brake pedal, will cause the engineto restart.

Before servicing the Civic Hybrid, turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the key so the engine cannot be started.

Before performing any service on the Civic Hybrids IMA system, make sure to turn the battery module switch OFF andwait 5 minutes before working on the vehicle (see page 12-3).
